Rate this book
The Official hardcopy publication of The Open Group Architecture Framework The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a framework - a detailed method and a set of supporting tools - for developing an enterprise architecture, developed by members of The Open Group Architecture Forum. This 2008 Edition is based on TOGAF Version 9.0. As a comprehensive, open method for enterprise architecture, TOGAF 9 complements, and can be used in conjunction with, other frameworks that are more focused on specific aspects of architecture or for vertical sectors such as Government, Defense, and Finance. TOGAF may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop an enterprise architecture for use within that organization (subject to the Conditions of Use).

To say that the TOGAF 9 documentation is dry is an understatement. Some areas are lacking in depth and whilst TOGAF is a process framework I would like to see it evolve to have templates, document samples and checklists. There is however some good content and I will be referring back.

A colleague has pointed me to an excellent set of documentation that include sample templates for TOGAF deliverables at: https://www2.opengroup.org/ogsys/jsp/...

This book is much more a reference guide imho. It does follow neatly the ADM cycle, so it is perfect to quickly do some lookups.

Content wise I believe the TOGAF framework is very adjustable and it has some good things. The reference models like the TRM for example seems a bit akward though.

Many parts of the book leaves you wondering how to take the suggested method into use in practice and how to combine it with existing organisational structures and methods surrounding development, management and governance.

Good place to start I think.
