Do you need help in sermon preparation? How can you make the presentation of your message more effective? Too little of contemporary preaching is really an exposition of what the Word of God actually says. Sincere exhortation and a fund of good stories are no substitute for the convincing power and authority of the Word of God. In calling preachers back to the exposition of the Word, Denis Lane gives definite instruction in the practical details of preparing and preaching a sermon. This book will be valuable for full-time pastors as well as those studying for the ministry and those engaged in lay preaching.
Very good little book on preaching covering the importance of expository preaching, the method of study and sermon preparation, the handling of various genres, the use of illustrations, and the formation of good introductions and conclusions.
The author writes with humility, charity, and clarity. If the material is not new, it is nevertheless encouraging to faithful pulpit ministry.
[On a personal note, I found his statements in support of the idea that worship is done in preparation for the preaching interesting, since I fall more often on the other side of the issue (against my own tradition) and think worship more properly comes as a response to the word (or work or person) of God. For instance, see pp. 24, 63, and 84-85.]
[Also of a little personal interest is his careful indulgence of the "sun/light/heat" illustration of the Trinity. He encourages careful use of such illustrations, but mentions they might be pushed too far. See pp. 96-97.]
