I have a very tatty copy of this book. It shows copyright date of 1955 but no publishing date. The Ashley publishing date indicated above (1996) is long after I bought my copy for 12'6! The number of pages is the same as in my copy. If they have simply reprinted the original (excellent) book, they have not added any value. The book precedes modern guitar tablature and so it is quite difficult to work out which fingers go where on which fret. Sometimes a chord is indicated way up the neck, but the frets are not numbered. EVEN SO, if you are an intermediate guitarist just by following the first few lessons you will be able to produce some really cool-sounding chord sequences. I've just found it and started working through it again.

This is a brilliant introduction to Jazz guitar chords and their use. It seems a bit dry and old fashioned, but having gone back to it once I spent time playing jazz, it opened up a new ways of playing old tunes. The second half of the book on solo playing is not so useful.

Great book but really hard to understand for the beginner. I needed a teacher for it.

Love the conversational tone, and it leads from basic to more intermediate stuff about as nicely as you could hope for.

An old classic. The first half of the book covers chords, while the second half deals with melodic runs.
