She is best known for her 1971 book The Manipulated Man and its various follow-ups, which argue that, contrary to common feminist and women's rights rhetoric, women in industrialized cultures are not oppressed, but rather exploit a well-established system of manipulating men.

This one was such a curiosity that I haven't been able to avoid it for long, even though I have a queue of to-be-read books going way back when. And it wasn't quite what I was expecting - it was even better. I thought it was going to be more towards the chick lit side of things, but it was better.
Set in Washington D.C., this is the story of Carlota, the daughter of the Argentinian diplomat, and her nanny from France, who does have a name but is always referred to as Mademoiselle. They are both outsiders, both from the fact that they are recently new to the area, foreigners, and because of eccentricities and/or beauty, don't naturally attract a lot of friends. Mademoiselle is the dictionary definition of beauty, and men are always chasing her. But she really isn't interested. Until after an accident, she meets a fireman... the short, broad, normal looking one who doesn't really give her a second glance. And so the two start plotting as to how she can "bump" into him again and make him want to chase her.
It's a really good yarn, I enjoyed it a lot. I will probably lend it to a few people, but this will be a book I will hang on to.

Bei diesem Buch erwartete ich eine einfach gestrickte Liebesgeschichte in Richtung Chick-Lit, aber ich bekam etwas ganz anderes geboten.
Ich gebe diesem Buch volle 5 Sterne, weil überrascht war, dass es mich zum Nachdenken brachte und ich einfach eine fabelhafte Zeit hatte.
Doch worum geht es eigentlich? Die Geschichte wird aus Sicht der 12jährigen Carlota erzählt und berichtet von ihrem wunderschönen Kindermädchen, das alle nur Mademoiselle nennen. Die schöne Französin ist in die USA gekommen, um einen richtigen Mann zu finden. Das ist nicht ganz einfach, denn Mademoiselle hat Ansprüche, doch dann an Weihnachten wird sie fündig, als der Weihnachtsbaum brennt und die Feuerwehr anrücken muss. Bei diesem Einsatz begegnet sie dem Feuerwehrmann Nick Kowalski, der ganz immun gegen ihre Schönheit zu sein scheint. Er wird nicht sofort von ihrer Schönheit geblendet und so muss sie selbst etwas einfädeln, damit sie ihm zufällig begegnen kann und was bietet sich da besseres an, als etwas anzuzünden?
Dieses Buch hat mir so viel Spaß gemacht! Ich habe es geliebt mit Carlotta und Mademoiselle Pläne auszuhecken, wie man Nick einfangen kann. Auch Carlottas Gedankengänge zu anderen Themen wie Ballett, Freundschaft usw. haben mich zum schmunzeln gebracht, denn sie sind einfach herrlich unkonventionell, so wie die gesamte Geschichte.
Action und Spannung ist auch in dem Buch zu finden, denn die Ladies müssen sich einiges einfallen lassen und sagen wir mal, dass ihre Methoden der Liebeswerbung krimineller Natur sind. Und es stellt sich ja immer die Frage, ob Mademoiselle ihren Nick für sich gewinnen wird.
Es versteckt sich kein Drama in dem Buch und so konnte ich mich richtig entspannen und einfach nur amüsieren. Ich habe mich pudelwohl gefühlt.
Liebe steckt auch in dem Buch, denn zumindest Mademoiselle ist ganz eindrucksvoll verliebt. Ob Nicks Liebe für sie dann doch noch entflammen kann für die Französin, muss jeder selbst lesen.
Das Buch kommt in simpler Verpackung einher, aber Carlottas Sichtweise auf das Leben, die Liebe, die Religion uns so viel mehr, haben mich oft stutzen lassen. Ihr unkonventionelles Denken hat mich doch mal über meine eigenen Überzeugungen überprüfen lassen.
Ich habe mich in dieses Buch verliebt und hoffe, dass ich euch weiterhelfen konnte, ob das Buch vielleicht auch etwas für euch ist.

I simply fell in love with this story. SO good, such a funny and charming story with clever twists and very nice and well written thoughts. I'm geniue sad that its over and I have a hard time picking a new book to read.

I first read this around a decade ago, and I'm amazed by how little I remembered when I reread it this time. A strange little book with no chapter breaks and peculiar characters with shady morals.

I read this book when I was in high school. I remember that I enjoyed it! This time was not different; I still love this book and recommended it a lot!

Un libro entrañable, dulce y candoroso. Volví a disfrutar mucho a Esther Vilar luego de Las matemáticas de Nina Gluckstein.
