Exactly as sweet and wholesome as described.

Cinnamon Bun stars an absolutely adorable young woman who, upon being dumped into a game-like universe, proceeds to mop floors and try to make friends with everyone and everything she comes across (with varying levels of success). It’s an absolutely beautiful subversion of the usual sociopathic style of character you often see in both actual RPGs and RPG-related fiction. Our hero not only recognizes the individuality and value of others, she actively seeks to find non-violent resolutions to conflicts.

In a way, you can think of this as being reminiscent of a game like Undertale, although I’d say the overall flavor of the story leans more heavily toward novels like Threadbare (which I also strongly recommend).

As a LitRPG, it’s a novel where RPG mechanics exist within the universe, which may not be everyone’s cut of tea. They’re pretty light as far as LitRPG mechanics go, though, and I personally found the class and skill advancement systems to be both engaging and thought provoking.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I’d strongly recommend it.

I started this book simply because I didn't want the book I'd read immediately before it to end. And this one seemed similar. And stuff. A human ends up on a different world, in a non-human shape, doing stuff that "levels them up" and is gaming like and stuff, yet in a world where the people in it are "real" in their element, even with that gaming leveling stuff going on.

That, at least, was what I thought I was going to get based on the book description, reviews, and book cover. And it was, in a way, like that. Except that the cover lies. Though I didn't immediately realize since the main character becomes the title of the book - a Cinnamon Bun. That's right, they became bread with icing on them (heh, no). No, what I mean is that a "pop-up" occurs, that tells them that they have a new class - the Cinnamon Bun class. This occurred immediately after arriving in the new world, and they hadn't looked at a mirror or anything, yet.

So, the cover of the book, the name of the book, etc., made me think they'll become a bun. You know, a bunny.

But no. They go from being a human to being . . . . a human. darn.

Right, so, you know how I mentioned that prior book? The one I loved and didn't want to end? It starred someone who was 19 years old in the book. I don't think I mentioned that before, in the book or anywhere else. Mostly because that age never really played a part in the book. Didn't matter that they were, technically, still a teenager. I mention all of this because the main character in this book is 16.

And they really seem to be sixteen here, as in a teenager. They were a mix of naive and . . . less than naive. But let's move beyond that. Also beyond comparing this book and the prior.

So - a young woman of 16 is in the middle of a boring class, I believe it was a Math class. A somewhat loud noise occurs, but apparently, only Broccoli Bunch hears the noise (and yes the main 16 year old female human character is named . . . Broccoli Bunch; and yes her parents were/are druggy hippies - at least Broccoli calls them that). Then some kind of "thing" appears, a box?, and it asks if Broccoli wants an adventure. And, so, naturally, Broccoli choices yes. Whereupon she is taken from Earth and moved to a fantasy world.

Whereupon events unfolded during which Broccoli was very bubbly and skiply and stuff, and deeply desirous of finding friends with any and everything - including skeletons, ghosts, and other random things found in her path.

Right, so, the book wasn't what I was hoping for, wasn't what I was expecting, etc. etc. and I yet I kept getting pulled into the story. Somewhere along the way, not sure where, I ended up rather enjoying the book. To the point that, when the book ended, I just continued on with reading book 2 in the series.

Cute, cozy and adorable LitRPG. I see why so many of the reviews call it "wholesome", mostly because it's exactly what it is. I would let my 11 year old niece read it with no worries, but it can be enjoyable for everyone who likes this genre. I am planning on reading the rest of them😃👍!

Cinnamon Bun by Ravens Dagger is described as "A Wholesome LitRPG" and that's really what it is. I don't think I've read any other LitRPG, but I found it a good introduction to the genre, so don't be afraid of that subtitle if you've never tried the genre or aren't much of a gamer. It's basically an adventure story where a young girl (high schooler, I think) is sitting in class when a little magical message pops up in front of her inviting her to accept a mission to purge the world of a great evil. When she accepts, she is transported to a different world, a fantasy videogame world.

She explores the world, excited for adventure, and discovers that she can gain skills (like you would in a videogame). But instead of being a warrior or mage or something her "class" is Cinnamon Bun and she gets skills like cleaning and friend-making. She also definitely doesn't want to kill anything, and I love the way that her morals were incorporated into the story at every turn and the way she always sought to find non-violent solutions to the problems she ran into. She's not thrilled about killing anything, even if it's a ghost in a world that feels very much like a videogame.

I also really appreciated that survival was a big aspect of the story. She had to worry about every aspect of her survival including food, shelter, etc, as she explored the world. For those who enjoy travel in stories there's interesting travel through this fantasy world as she explores it. At first, she's on her own, but she eventually meets other people as the scope of her adventure widens.

Since it is a LitRPG I'll make a comparison. I'm not much of a gamer, but just to give you an idea of the atmosphere and feel of the world I liken it to games like Rayman and Ori (bright, fun, cute) with a dash of the survival like Don't Starve (but it's not as dark as Don't Starve's cutscenes!). Don't know if that helps anyway, but yes, it's a bright, fun, cute adventure LitRPG.

Finally, I just want to say that I looked forward to the time when I would be able to read it each day and found myself trying to squeeze in a chapter at lunch time and constantly trying to find time to read it each evening. I would highly recommend it, especially if you're looking for something light and not dark to read and relax.

A fun, happy read

This book is just as nice as you could hope it would be, while still sometimes bopping monsters on the head. But only if they're meanies. It's not all overly cutsie stuff, though, there's plenty of adventure and exploration as well.

There are a couple of bits that push the line, like finding a "vibrating wand of cure hysteria" (if you don't get it, ask your parents), but still firmly gets a PG rating.

I thought this was a standalone book, as there is no mention of it being part of a series, but, with that ending, I hope there will be more.

I don't read books like this. Except when I do...

Cinnamon Bun is the type of book I really shouldn't enjoy, totally different to almost all of the books I read.

The main character is basically a human version of Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony, to the point of literally getting the power of friendship, jumping and cuteness.

Her innate happiness, and surety that the world is generally good, put me off the book so much I was still reading at gone midnight the first day I picked it up....

It's hard to describe why I couldn't put it down, but the main character does grow on you, and you find yourself smiling as they make friends, and approach challenges in the oddest way.

The book reminds me a lot of Sense by Jay Boyce, or slightly similar to one of the characters from The Wandering Inn by Pirate Aba, but not as dark.

And while I didn't expect to at the start, I ended up wanting to recommend it to others. Go read it if you want something a little different.

If you're looking for a cute, cozy adventure story, this one is definitely worth giving a try! I love Broccoli Bunch and her desire to make friends and explore, as well as her Cinnamon Bun class and its adorable skills (cleaning, jumping, etc.). The beginning starts off just a little slow, but as soon as she starts meeting up with other people and getting into all kinds of adventures, it really takes off. So fun and cozy!

I'm not usually a fan of the isekai trope but this book is just so fun and strange that I just can't help but love it. Cinnamon Bun is an adorable character that tries to make friends with everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE! A great fun read.

Wholesome, fun LitRPG story about a girl in a fantasy world who goes about adventuring by cleaning and making friends first and using violence second. Pretty good. I’ll listen to the next one. 3 stars.

As I've stated in my last couple of reviews, I've been in a serious slump both for reading and writing reviews. Everything has been sliding out of my head, and even when it doesn't, words don't come. I've been seeking out action-heavy, easy to get into, fun books. So, this was part of a request tweet i sent out looking for something matching that description and I was told this was a "wholesome litrpg", so off I went!

Okay, this MC was super, super saccharine at the start and I wasn't sure about whether I was going to jive with it or not. I do like wholesome, but at the beginning I thought maybe this went a step too far for my personal taste. Our MC is named Broccoli Bunch. LOL, yeah. She's a 16 year old with an intensely bubbly personality. She loves adventure, has a really positive and enthusiastic attitude about most things and expresses that by dancing around frequently. She's also incredibly naïve, but she's at least aware of it. Her inner commentary on her own shortcomings is what kept me going until the bigger plot points started to come in.

She really wants to be an adventurer and make friends, but she tries to make friends with things like ghosts. Ghosts that only want to kill her. She feels bad about killing them, but she has to out of self defense, and despite the odds she begins to level up.

Even the skill sets and classes she levels up are wholesome and funny. She has "cleaning" and "gardening" skills that she uses to cleanse souls as well as houses, lololol. So, when she discovers an abandoned town she goes around cleaning and leveling up. There are a fair number of prompts and stats in this book, some of them are funny, but your mileage may vary here.

There's a lot of world-exploring kind of stuff along with lots of level grinding and dungeons. Keeping on brand and with the theme, the monsters in the dungeons are actually kind of cute despite being deadly. For the amount of fighting and killing in this book, it's not particularly bloody. She just wants to befriend all these monsters and they keep attacking her and she just keeps leveling, lol. She gets a spirit cat she names Orange, which ya know, as a person who loves cats this is my jam.

I really liked how the magic worked and how the skills and classes did or didn't work out for her. There was a bit too many stats for my personal taste. Exploring the world was fun although sometimes I felt it was a bit repetitive and that made it feel a little slower for me.

Overall, I'd recommend this to people who are looking for a very different kind of MC in a litrpg story. This is not for people who want a ton of action in the traditional sense, since most battles here are almost cute? For me, the MC walked the line of being too much for me, just on the edge but I did find myself liking her more as the story went on. Because of just how different this MC is, however, it makes the approach to the magic and the dungeons different as well, creating a fresh story in a well trodden genre.

A very good, sweet story.
It was hilarious at times and Broccoli is a good character with the side characters also being sufficiently distinct.

An isekai story (a more recent iteration of the portal fantasy, where a modern young adult from this world is transported to a fantasy world--the difference being, instead of destiny, the protagonist has special powers ((in this case, she interacts with the world through a gaming interface and becomes stronger by leveling up)) ) chronicling the off-world quests of Broccoli Bunch, a happy, optimistic young woman who just wants to make friends and go on adventures.

It makes for a nice change from the usual isekai protagonists, who act like psychopaths in their search for more power. And where the other characters are fodder in their quest for more power. It's supposed to be cool and awesome(look at how clever they are at exploiting the fantasy world's rules to obtain more power), but ultimately comes off as hollow.

Cinnamon Bun isn't like that. It's sweet without being saccharine and, as the title advertises, quite wholesome. I recommend it (with one caveat, it has less puns than I expected).

Cinnamon Bun (Cinnamon Bun, #1) by Ravensdagger:

Cinnamon Bun by Ravensdagger presents readers with a whimsical and light-hearted take on the litRPG genre, but falls short of leaving a lasting impression. While the premise holds promise, the execution lacks depth and originality, resulting in a story that feels derivative and forgettable.

Ravensdagger's writing style is charming and accessible, with witty dialogue and colorful descriptions that bring the world of Cinnamon Bun to life.

However, the plot of Cinnamon Bun follows familiar tropes without offering much in the way of innovation. The protagonist's journey from novice to hero feels formulaic, and the challenges they face lack the tension and stakes necessary to truly engage readers.

The world-building in Cinnamon Bun is minimal, with little attention paid to the underlying mechanics of the game world or the larger setting in which the story takes place.

When compared to its contemporaries in the litRPG genre, such as Ready Player One by Ernest Cline or The Land by Aleron Kong, Cinnamon Bun pales in comparison. While these works offer immersive worlds and compelling characters, Cinnamon Bun struggles to distinguish itself, relying too heavily on familiar tropes and clichés.

Rating: ⭐⭐ (2/5)

Cinnamon Bun, #1 is a forgettable entry in the litRPG genre, offering little in the way of originality or depth. While it may provide some entertainment for casual readers, it ultimately falls short of its potential.

*Audiobook Review*
This was hard to review, not because it was badly written but it was written for an audience like a Canadian Dr.Who. Broccoli Bunch (yes, that is her name), the MC is the sweetest kindest pacifistic super nice girl ever, who is given a chance to leave her boring math class, family and her world to go on a merry adventure. An adventure to make friends, explore her new world and ride dragons. Now, if you are someone jaded like me, a person's naivete would quickly erode the moment you come across your first MOB. It's survival of the fittest and you better start killing your first slaver, undead, rapist and all around evil guy with the first rock you pick up. Not your MC; for as an nontraditional heroin she tries to make friends with everyone and everything. In fact, her sneak attack is to wait until a evil ghost is close enough to jump from the bushes and cutely ask "Hi, My name is Broccoli, do you want to be friends?" ...yea. So you think she changes and become more callous? Nope, she does this to every enemy with a knife or claw. After a while, as a reader this becomes difficult and cringe worthy. I am a Canadian and I try to be polite as much as possible but I would shank the first person that looks at me funny in a strange new world where everyone wants a piece of my ass. Like I said, this story is not for the normal crowd but for Mormons. *Spolier* Her friend gets kidnapped, and she is involved in the death of the kidnappers/rapist/racist. Okay, taking a life was hard but to weep for scum like that was a bit too much. She mourned for these horrible people and identified them as people who had families and kids (the same people who would do the same without bating an eye). By this point I got the feeling that if the MC was in a room with Hitler and Stalin and and had a gun with two bullets, she would drop the gun and try to make friends with them and try to convince them not to be such "meanie". Like Dr.Who she would try to solve her problem by trying to understand and hug out things. This gets annoying after a while and this is the reason why I don't watch Dr. Who. However, all this was not bad, the story is sweet and some of the "nicer" situations were solved very nicely with moxie, kindness and a spoonful of honey. If you want violence and medieval justice, then this book is not for you. If you want a refreshing change where you want people to solve their issues with empathy ,reason and love for your fellow man then I highly recommend you pick this book up.

Oh so much fun!

A sixteen year old transported to a fantasy world tries to make it through in the oddest way possible: by making friends. The story on the surface appears to be a young adult, but is remarkably well suited for adults. The naive appearance of the MC is just that an appearance; she puts a notable amount of thought behind her actions and choices. She actively chooses to be as she is and IT WORKS! There are jokes and references that LitRPG readers will enjoy. The flow is fast, the story pleasant and captivating, and the editing excellent (few small typos.) In all it is an enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

Going by previous reviews, it was supposed to be a nice refreshing and friendly LiTRPG book and lived up to it. The MC is cheerful in a bit of naïve way and following her was fun at the beginning. But then the book doesn't offer anything much and it gets repetitive very quick. Probably for a teen YA audience, this might be more to their liking.

Author really has a lively writing style and captures the tone of the book very well. The prose is engaging and I smiled to myself more often than in any other book.

Not a bad book, but just wished it offered a bit more in variety.

She's here to have a good time

If you're anything like me, you're a little tired of the same old super-serious litrpg protagonists angsting about the same old things. Not Broccoli Bunch! With incalculable levels of optimism, she's here to make friends, clean up ghosts, and earn the kind of experience that fills you with warm and fluffy feelings.

Ok.... I was not expecting much from the book, but i did enjoy it. The main character feels like an airhead that bumps from one adventure to the next. The ending felt incomplete, but not by much. Will read the next book.

Uninterested in all the edgelord LitRPG stories, stumbled across this story and was curious to try it. The character isn't some loser who blames RL for things like not having friends or belonging, who finds where they REALLY belong in this fantasy world, complete with instant harem, glory, violence, respect, blah, blah, blah.

Instead, we have Broccoli Bunch, a cinnamon roll meme incarnate, looking for wonder, adventure, and new friends. She's DELIGHTFUL, stumbling around this new world discovering how things like Skills and mana work, the wide variety of species and races, and how to make as many friends as possible. She's a sharp contrast to many of the other characters and even our own perspective in that when faced with an enemy we'd immediately just fight and kill, Broccoli sees them as the living, breathing being they are, going for the pacifist approach first, trying to introduce herself and possibly befriend them rather than fight them. Sometimes it works. Sometimes shaking hands rather than crossing swords brings her unexpected and powerful allies no one else would have hesitated to fight (and probably died because of).

There's a rescue scene that just owned my whole heart. She *really* doesn't want to fight. Broccoli sees no reason why people can't be reasonable and equals, and she doesn't understand cruelty when kindness is easier.

I *adore* this child. (Note: my Southern Drawl™ came out real hard on that sentence, just know.) She is *precious*. I am very much looking forward to her excitement toward future adventures and how her peaceable approach changes the ingrained mindset of those around her.

Cute fantasy. Funny.

Broccoli Bunch is transported to a fantasy world which runs on RPG mechanics. There she has adventures and tries her very, very best to make friends. Her class, as assigned by 'the world' when she arrives is Cinnamon Bun, which she decides is a support class, but it's fairly apparent that it's a cute class. Her adventures are fun, the humour is well done. I enjoyed this book.

Bad points, because there have to be some. I don't think I'd have liked this book if I hadn't got it as an audiobook. I think the main character would've irritated me horribly. The voice actress does a very good job of making Broccoli adorable instead of annoying. Also, I'm pretty sure she's a cinnamon roll. That's the correct otaku term. I don't know whether the change of name is deliberate, or a mistake on the part of the author. The rabbit ears on the cover art have nothing to do with Broccoli. She does do a lot of jumping.

Cliffhanger ending. One of my personal pet peeves. This one is lampshaded so heavily that I couldn't bring myself to hate it, and it's really just a way of breaking the story.

This is effectively a light novel, western style. It's a bit long for a work like that. I shouldn't complain about getting more for my money, but there were times when I was thinking 'isn't it over yet.' Then I'd be laughing and didn't care.

Overall, I enjoyed this, and I plan to get the next in the series. Maybe the best western light novel analogue I've seen thus far.

3.5⭐

This is very cute and charming and I like the idea of cleaning magic and trying first to be nice to people in your RPG fantasy world. However, 20% into the book and they're all zombies so stop trying to make friends with them - it doesn't make sense. She doesn't apply any intelligence or show a learning curve to the challenges she faces; the bad guy keeps giving a magical boost to each of his minions - you know what's going to happen so try to stop him! It gets a little repetitive. This repetition is not aided by the unoriginal ripping off the Alice in wonderland motif.

It's impossible that her parents were at Woodstock she's familiar with video games, RPGs, Avatar, etc. The only RPG that was available in a time frame that would make sense for her parents being a Woodstock was D&D and this is clearly not what the setup of this book is referencing. Giving the character a more grounded, solid background would be valuable.

"They were majestic, in their own way. Like fat people in a supermarket," is both unnecessary and surprisingly cruel for a book about a character whose main attributes are nice and cute (96%).

There are some typos and it's a little slow. The ending is very lame and ending on a pun is always bad writing. Overall, though, I enjoyed the world, the main character and the sweet, huggable spin on an RPG.
