The end of book one ended mid-scene, which is one of the reasons I just slide directly into reading this book here. Which picks up the scene the prior book ended with.

So - the 16 year old earthling continues on her adventures on a different world, a world other than Earth, and a world where people can "level up" "classes" and "skills" and stuff. Broccoli, the main character, continues with the friend she picked up, adds a few more along the way, and remeets other some of the characters she briefly meet in book one.

For reasons that escape me, I ended up liking this book more than I did the previous book.

Another addictive read I needed to continue gulp down over a short period of time.

I'm not sure if it's because the main character is 16, or they are just naive and clueless, but there's an underlying lesbian story/plot/vibe going on in this story that Broccoli is completely ignorant about. Which would normally be fine, of course, to overlook such a vibe/etc., except that Broccoli is one of the people involve which would make it be a lesbian relationship. There are broad hints by others, but I am not actually 100% sure the others really are pointing out the subplot-line. Though I know Broccoli herself is 100% unaware of the situation. It's vaguely uncomfortable to read, as I feel like we are building up to a massive misunderstanding/blow-up. On the other hand, Broccoli goes out of her way to tell any and everyone that her ultimate dream involves living in a small fenced house in a calm peaceful location with two kids and a handsome husband. Sooo . . . it'd be harder for . . . anyone confused . . . to . . right, I don't know what's happening, or why there's this vague undercurrent going on. Reminds me of that Sophie Fouriner series wherein Sophie just doesn't realize she's an asexual, or that there's a woman that fancies her . . . and stuff.

Where was I? What was I attempting to write? Bah, I'll move on.

I think it’s fair to say that the “wholesome” tag in the title has been somewhat cast aside for this second book. Maybe the references in book one were less obvious or more subtle or something, I don’t know. Certainly anime tropes are becoming more apparent. That said I’m still loving this series. Lots of giggles ( the best jokes are often in the chapter headings), intrigue and adventure.

Finally, as a bisexual woman, I have very definite opinions about Awen’s fan servicey crush. Don’t blow it Mr Dagger.

Book one starts out alright, with potential to be quite good and have depth, but it just degenerates into a typical litrpg with a large number of references. The author doesn't seem to have anything original to say, the characterisation/advertisement of it as a wholesome fantasy is false, the author's understanding of the main and only perspective character is flawed, and there's no real depth. I'm disappointed, but honestly, not entirely surprised. I hate not finishing something and I really try not to do it but it's ongoing anyway and with the trajectory of the quality/entertainment value, I can only see myself getting more frustrated by Chapter... 465? DNF book 3, at I think Chapter 138. It honestly feels like a botched attempt to replicate an Erin character, or to canonise a friend, without fully understanding.

Honestly this feels like a selfinsert.  Not in a completely bad way.  But Broccoli is careless, overconfident, naive, and could be more diligent about things that she's relying on in a survival situation.

I think the problem with have a perspective character like Broccoli or Erin is that they miss things, which with only one perspective in the book means either slipping them in with the universal perspective or just missing them out, and I don't think RavensDagger has really achieved that.

It feels like she's being good for the sake of being good rather than because she fully understands the consequences of her actions.  Which is realistic I suppose, she's a 16yo from Canada, I guess I just prefer some more depth.

Am fairly certain this is a mistake, either from lack of familiarity with the outside of bee nests which are typically made of propolis rather than paper, or observing something beelike building a paper nest and assuming that they are bees.

You know what it is, Broccoli's character feels adulterated by Ravens.

'"Didn’t you see how subtly I slid into your best friend slot?"' I'm going to use this as a euphemism from now on.

With her spade, like it's technically called a warspade now.  How exactly is that not classed as a weapon?  But also, how does it still contribute to her makeshift weapon skill?  She's not using what she's finding, it's like her primary weapon that she's maintained.

The fact that she's an adventurer and really into murdering monsters and stuff sort of seems, to me, to undermine what I thought was the central message.  If this is a cosy fantasy, it's botched.  If it's support for the idea that you can contribute to society and have value without being violent, it's botched.  If it's affirmation that you can solely be a gardener or mechanic or cleaner or whatever and still go on adventures it's botched.

The speed at which she levels is... dubious. I realise there are justifications but I'm a little sick of it tbh.

We've gone a bit Vainqueur here.

'I did like the stuff about the battles and the intrigue, but they were far and few in between.' It just seems really out of character for Broccoli.

Same as the first volume (mostly; it's less wholesome, being filled with more inuendos). Our heroine, Broccoli Bunch, has got herself officially accepted into an adventuring guild and merrily goes about upsetting the status quo, but this time with an accomplice and a hostage--or as she calls them, friends.

Volume 2 (Chapters 67-130) can be found for free online here:

Extremely cute

Very similar to the first book although it felt like there was slightly more action. If you liked book 1 (or you know, fun?) you’ll very much enjoy this one.

A fun kind of rambling adventure. The story is well told and amusing, perfect for a young female audience or some old guy looking for something silly to relax to when reading.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5

This book continues right where the first one let off, in the middle of a tense scene! Talk about a literal cliffhanger (though I suppose the cliff doesn't appear until the first page of this book).

The adventure of the most wholesome and cute protagonist ever continues. This time with more hostages, accomplices, and evil-turned-good, aka friends. The plot keeps moving all the time, yet there's enough downtime between adventures that we get more setting and character background.

One thing I did not understand is one of our new companions, Awen, who says "awa" all the time. ALL THE TIME. Is this an anime trope? Googling did not reveal anything. It's incredibly annoying. She should be called Awawen just like she mistakenly introduced herself because of how annoying she is. She should have been left behind because of how I annoying I found her. Her entire character shouts ANIME TROPE to the high heavens and I hate it so much.

But honestly that was my only gripe. I love all the puns. I love the cuteness overload and how Broccoli just gets the most useless skills but does amazing things with them. The plots are fun and fast paced with a huge world to explore. We often go on side quests (am I the only one that felt bad that they didn't catalogue all the flowers first?) but things always work out. I just love the low stakes adventuring lifestyle.

I love this series. It's totally different from what I normally read. I only got the first book because it was on sale on audible and the description intrigued me. The main character is adorkable and it really is just a quirky and fun thing to read. The narration is perfect for the series. I couldn't stop once I started reading it. I can't wait for volume three.

Maybe this doesn't entirely deserve 4 stars. Maybe 3.5, but I find myself laughing so much that I think it deserves 4. But I'm perverse. YMMV.

Anyway, the continued adventures of an isekaied 16-year-old Canadian who just wants to have adventures and (most of all) make friends. The sheer lunacy of her adventures continues to make me laugh. I am making time to listen to the audiobook. The performance continues to impress.

I tend to avoid spoilers in my reviews, but I will say that I thought the 'solution' to the dragon problem was a bit obvious. As in, I spotted it coming as soon as the dragon appeared. It was still brilliant. It seems like Broccoli is quietly mangling the entire social structure of her new world. First there was tools for the dryads, now I suspect she's introduced assembly lines to the bee people. Things are changing.

So is Broccoli. I can't help but wonder whether someone got the cover illustrations out of order.

Anyway, I enjoyed this one so much, I ordered the next volume immediately, so I clearly liked it. On to more adventure. And friends.

Broccoli Bunch is probably one of my favorite litrpg heros and Cinnamon Bun is one of my favorite series. It is unique, clever, and the characters are a ton of fun (a ton of bun? a bun of fun? a bun fun? a fun bun?) In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the previous one and I'm excited to find out what happens next because this is definitely not over. No complaints on any level, but a definite warning for those considering letting younger audience members listen/read. It is a little less tame than the first one with some mature themes hinted at around the edges. Nothing overt or inappropriate but it might garner some unexpected conversation if younger listeners are given access to it. Just be warned. Forewarned is forearmed and all.

Continues the story of the naive mentally pre-teen girl whose parents hated her so much they named her Broccoli.

It is fun and wholesome. The story seems to be a bit off the rails here as there isn't much of a plot, and the only plot like thing that happens in the last 1 hour of the audiobook and is just the setup for the next book.

Compared to the first book it is somewhat dumber and the heroine more selectively capably or dumb as the plot demands it.

Though despite the nonsense I rolled my eyes with a big grin on my face.

Funny, sweet, and smart

These books are really funny and all the characters are great. I was worried these books would be just fluff, but there’s enough violence and danger to be suspenseful and positive. I’d prefer more viciousness and cruelty, but the MC is quite brave, strong, and be dark enough that I’m not unsatisfied. It’s Litrpg elements are simple, but consistent and thorough.

Fun, delightful, and full of cuddly friendliness. Given the extended lackadaisical ensamble, the hearty jokes, the innuendos, and the stupid-but-funny dialog, I tend to enjoy this book more than the first.

Even so, I believe the reader needs to get into a certain mood to fully enjoy the innocent happy-go-lucky adventure. There were times when I thought it was a bit too much. :))

Will definitely continue the series.

A Joy

I smiled for essentially this entire book, only taking breaks to laugh or talk about it with my fiancé. When I saw this had come out I immediately reread the first, something I enjoyed immensely, then powered through this.

This series is a light-hearted gift and I for one can’t wait for it to keep giving. I recommend it to everyone with no reservations.

Wholesome and fun, just like it says

It’s a cute and silly story about a cute and silly girl, who still faces some pretty serious problems and does the best she can. That can be a tricky balance to pull off, making it lighthearted but still making it matter, Ravensdagger consistently nails it.

New friends, and the cover art from #1 is no longer a lie. Broccoli stumbles from adventure to adventure, making friends along the way, as well as all her wishes come true.

Pausing here, but still open on Royal Road on my phone, will continue at some point. Can only have some much Broccoli in my diet at once, lest I develop cavities from the sweetness.

This series is a delightful change of pace from many books out there, but especially compared to the rest of the genre. It’s imaginative, funny, whimsical, and relatable. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the series and by this author. They’ve certainly got a talent for writing great stories. I love it!

The wholesomeness continues, especially after Broccoli gets a full party. This series really is a pure fantasy. There's not many other series that can say that they had their protagonist dance to communicate with giant sentient bees. I'm also quite impressed with the number of different sentient species in this series, and I hope to keep seeing more.

Great story. Great grammar. A very skilled author.

A small number of minor inconsistencies.

The only thing stopping this from being amazing (for me specifically) is the general lack of progression due to the incessant fluff and meandering.

Yuck

Characters are walking tropes with little life or agency outside of them.
Dialogue is cringe and testament to the author's self-indulgence.
Pacing is inconsistent and exhausting.

I thought the first book was ok but this one was just gross.

I like the hints at romance here. Broccoli's total naivete is on brand and quite charming. I find myself rooting for the romance. That said, a reference in the book to sex toys feels a little off brand, jarring and a little riske compared to the rest of the novel.

The pacing is better here - a lot happens and you're constantly moving from one new thing to another. Broccoli is constantly learning and growing; the forward progression and originality completely improves upon the first book. I hope the series continues on because I look forward to reading more books about these characters.
