I decided to read this book when Maggie Anton shelved it because I recognized its thematic connections to Anton's upcoming novel Enchantress: A Novel of Rav Hisda's Daughter which I received from Net Galley and intend to review soon.

It shows that ancient Jewish folklore and practice was very syncretic. This means that it was influenced by other cultures. The most notable example is a synagogue floor mosaic that depicts the Greek sun god, Helios in his chariot surrounded by the twelve zodiac signs.

I discussed this book and Sefer Ha-Razim, a book of ancient Jewish magic in a review on my blog that can be found at http://shomeretmasked.blogspot.com/20...
