Tending bar in a Barcelona tavern, rubbing elbows with Gypsies and other outsiders, Pascual hopes the world has finally lost interest in him and the sins of his youth. But when a stranger who knows his name walks into the bar, Pascual knows his past has caught up with him again. This one is an American journalist who wants to talk to Pascual about things that happened in Germany ten years ago. Pascual doesn’t want to revisit any of that; he has too much to lose now, including the affections of Sara Muñoz, the half-Gypsy flamenco singer who has taught him how to love again. When the journalist turns up dead with Pascual’s name in his notebook, the police come calling, and things go from bad to worse, as more killings threaten Pascual’s tight-knit circle and it becomes apparent that Sara has her own secrets to hide. Pascual will need all his old survival skills and some Gypsy street smarts to protect the people he loves by tracing the mysterious connections and figuring out why his past is suddenly dangerously current again.
