Les Mysteres de Paris, Tome II
Eugène Sue (1804-1857), né à Paris, est un écrivain français. Il est principalement connu pour deux de ses romans-feuilletons à caractère Les Mystères de Paris (1842/43) et Le Juif Errant (1844/45). Il étudia au lycée Condorcet. Jeunesse dorée pour le futur écrivain qui va pourtant se révéler un élève médiocre et turbulent, puis un jeune homme dont les frasques défraient la chronique. Eugène Sue est l'auteur de sept romans exotiques et maritimes, onze romans de moeurs, dix romans historiques, quinze autres romans sociaux (dont une série intitulée Les Sept Péchés Capitaux), deux recueils de nouvelles, huit ouvrages politiques, dix-neuf oeuvres théâtrales (comédie, vaudeville, drame) et six ouvrages divers. Il se convertit au socialisme et écrit Les Mystères de Paris. Il est publié en feuilleton dans Le Journal des Débats et suscite un intérêt énorme dans toutes les couches de la société, et même à l'étranger. Il publie ensuite Le Juif Errant, également en feuilleton dans Le Constitutionnel. Autres oeuvres Paula Monti; ou, L'H'tel Lambert (1842), Mystères du Peuple (1849) et La Marquise Cornélia Alfi (1852).

Joseph Marie Eugène Sue (20 January 1804 – 3 August 1857) was a French novelist.
He was born in Paris, the son of a distinguished surgeon in Napoleon's army, and is said to have had the Empress Joséphine for godmother. Sue himself acted as surgeon both in the Spanish campaign undertaken by France in 1823 and at the Battle of Navarino (1828). In 1829 his father's death put him in possession of a considerable fortune, and he settled in Paris.
A street in Paris is named for Eugene Sue, in the 18th Arrondissement: Rue Eugene Sue is located near the Poissonnière Metro station, and is not far from Montmartre and the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur.

On comprend que ces Mystères aient pu passionner, il y a de tout ici: des crimes, des viols, des amours passionnés, des héros au grand coeur, etc. Mais force est de constater que les personnages sont souvent très caricaturaux pour notre xxième siècle. Reste que certains éléments de réflexion (notamment un formidable passage sur la culture du viol et la place des femmes) étaient d’une modernité absolue et sont tristement toujours d’actualité. Par ailleurs, malgré les clichés, on se prend bien au jeu

Un second tome avec des personnage moins truculents mais tout aussi (voir davantage) sordides. Les intrigues prennent aussi une place plus importantes, tandis que le vocabulaire verse moins dans l'argot, rendant la lecture plus aisée.
