Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
A fantasy adventure inspired by One Thousand and One Nights!
Deep within the desert lie the mysterious Dungeons, vast stores of riches there for the taking by anyone lucky enough to find them and brave enough to venture into the depths from where few have ever returned. Plucky young adventurer Aladdin means to find the Dungeons and their riches, but Aladdin is just as mysterious as the treasures he seeks. Together with his friend, Ali Baba and the genie, Ugo, Aladdin sets out to find his fortune in the depths of the endless dunes…
Aladdin finds himself among the Kouga tribe, who live deep in the desert far from Qishan. An emissary from the Kou Empire arrives offering peace, but when it turns out to be an offer they can't refuse, things take a turn for the worse. Aladdin learns more about the legend of the Magi and the Rukh, bird-like beings of light, with whom he appears to share a deep connection...
My Thoughts:
We learn even more about Aladdin in this volume. I get more excited with each new thing we learn. It seems that the Kou Empire is subjugating countries as fast as they can and sending their people to capture Dungeons and use their Magoi in battle. Aladdin doesn't seem to know about this part, but he has learned that there are other Magi out there that are also choosing kings. We also learn about the Rukh (the little flying birds made of light) that help Aladdin sometimes when he's fighting. He meets some interesting people this time and then sets out on a journey to reunite with Alibaba. I can't say too much because there are things that you should find out by actually reading the volume.
We also learn that Morgiana has left Qishan and is on her way to Balbadd so that she can take a ship back to her homeland. She's been traveling in a caravan with Laylah and Sahsa. I hope she can make it home some day.
World: The art is solid. Thin and different but solid. The world building is okay. There are bits and pieces of depth here but so far the story is focusing on the characters to build them up and that's fine. There are hints and little answers to the magic system and the world at large but mostly it's there for the character. The Mongolian setting was a nice little change.
Story: The story moved well. Stakes were clear and straightforward with no curves. It's well constructed. The focus on Aladdin was nice as the last one was focused on Ali Baba. I think it's a smart move to tell stories early on abut each character making them stand out and making readers care about them. It's a nice little journey for Aladdin and we know who he is after, we'll not know his history but we know who he is as a person. The Mongolian story was interesting and basic and served the plot well.
Characters: The focus on Aladdin was a good choice. We see his lost memory and we see the starting point for his character for the series which allows readers to relate with him. The secondary story with the tribe is also interesting and strong.
Wo kommt er her?
Everything about Baba and her village just breaks my heart. I'm glad though that Aladdin got to meet them and gain a family, while learning more about his role as a Magi. I remember vividly how stressed and upset I was when I watched the anime years ago at how cruel and disgusting the empire was and that hasn't changed.
Also, I love Morgiana and I'm happy to see her free and determined to go back to her homeland.
I really love this cover with Morgiana, she is so cute!
The series is a bit darker than one would expect especially from the first volume, diving into slavery and backstabbing wars. The moments that new characters are introduced is really good as they either give you enough to wonder who they are or they are involved quite a bit and start liking them right away (at least for me) I'm looking forward to more of the volumes!
While Aladdin meets a real princess in the desert and saves her from the Kou Empire, Morgiana the slave girl decides to fight back and ends up in grave danger for her desires of freedom. Ohtaka will have fans falling in love with these new and likable characters in an entry full of politics and battle. How will Aladdin help the Kouga Clan face down their enemies without starting a war?!
It's weird. You meet a character in this volume and then they die, but it's still so emotional even though you haven't known that character for long. Literally made me cry. This series is super super interesting.
Cada vez melhor! Estou a amar!!! Morgiana my queen is back!!! Onde está o Alibaba? Quero respostas! 4.6/5 estrelas para este volume!
Another character that was introduced that I think may play a huge role in the future. We see here a display of political matters that I’d love to learn of what the Kou empire is and why I think they’re trouble.
Another one to point is that I love the art so much.
I always love this comic. The new side story they introduced was really fun, even if it probably doesn’t end up affecting much in the main quest. The art is also incredibly clean. Can’t wait for the next one!
I’m totally in love with this manga, It has a couple characters so far I really love and the art and action is really amazing!! One of the top Shonens I’ve read so far👌😁💕📖
