This Waste of Time is one of the worst books I've ever read, bar none. I can't believe the library even had it. Thank goodness I didn't spend any money on it. I love Roman fiction, but this one was so unbelievably bad it was hilarious. I alternated between grimaces and belly laughs. It concerned a Celtic woman [daughter of a Druid], her torrid romance with a Roman officer: a primus pilus, no less, then the third member of the triangle, his legate. The writing was very poor; if I had a speck of talent I'm sure I could have written a better novel. I think the author knew maybe a very few general facts about Celts and the Roman military and culture. She threw them into her story to make it seem authentic. Forget about learning any history! C'mon now, soldiers in the Roman Army going around dressed in togas in the field??? The Celtic characters all talking with a supposedly Low Scots Bobby Burns accent: 'dinna', 'wouldna', 'wee lassie', etc.??? A Gaul named Yves? I read about a quarter if that much, skimmed much of the rest, then read the last page to see how it came out. Oh, of course 'True Love' triumphed!

No, I don't think it was supposed to be a satire or parody on Roman novels. I actually debated adding it to my 'humor' shelf!
