4.85 The Dom-Sub relationship was so good! So respectful! The only problem was that it was a little bit too short and rushed, and I read a fan-translation that wasn't so good, so the lines were a bit disconnected and hard to follow.
Cute as fuck but pretty insubstantial. It's getting a higher rating than it would otherwise because it's one of those titles/translations that makes me go "this is so Japanese... this is SO JAPANESE" as I read it.
Which is a value that's hard to elaborate on further -- I have never lived in Japan, I don't study the language at present. And yet I have been exposed since its media since I was a wee thing, I'm drawn back again and again to its movies and books and cultural phenomena/analysis. I'm not saying it in the sense of "oh wow the Japanese are just different/Japan is just special," but in the earnest attempt to recognize that the cultural bedrock at work is so vastly different, in what I find to be fascinating ways.
And a lot of that is at work here. Honestly, the dom/sub stuff is so vastly secondary to the cultural negotiations at work in this title: fear of imposition, the insecurity of self in the face of social expectation, the expression of actual desire within rigid framework. Actually, that last just explained to me why the mangaka even wrote in the kink when it barely features -- sensei was clearly tapping into something cultural, deliberately so. So yeah, narratively it's threadbare, but the self-awareness at work is worth all four stars.
*Original Review* This is a subdomverse story about a dom, Kurashina, who has a complex about being a dom. He sort of resents Isshiki, the student body president, because he seems like the perfect dom and he feels inferior to him. Until one day Kurashina finds Isshiki collapsed in the halllway after school. It turns out Isshiki is actually a sub and doesn't take well to suppressants. Kurashina offers to be his partner and the two develop a relationship.
This was a cute and wholesome subdomverse. It was just a little too short for me. I think there was a lot more that could've been explored, but I don't think the author got enough pages to execute it. I still really enjoyed the story. I always love a sweet and caring dom.
*Reread 03/31/2025 * Did not realize I’ve read this before. I love a good subdomverse. This was sweet although not super memorable for me. I enjoyed it in the moment.
The art is suberb. I like the gentle emotions. And it felt real. There is a moment in which the mc casually says he's not interested in dating. The ml overhears and is hurt. But the ml, next time he interacts with the mc, realizes the mc was just trying to respect the ml and his boundaries. I know it is not a huge revelation. But there is something satisfying about the characters interacting genuinely, seeing each other for who they are, that speaks to me. So often we get those misunderstanding tropes but never a satisfying UNDERSTANDING of another human.
Sweet and lovely. Can't wait to read more from this author.
3.5 love the art, it's very unique and that's something i can always appreciate. the story is ok, i think the relationship between the two characters is interesting and there aren't any issues with consent so kudos to the author for that.
