I read this book for my Dutch class and I liked it quite a lot, especially for that class because normally I don't like the books I read for that at all.
Bernlef is one of the best Dutch writers for me, his stories are quite quick but the plot is very well developed, just like the characters.
Dutch literature often misses any form of emotion in its writing and I've never really felt anything for characters in Dutch literary works, except for Bernlef's character.
This book has quite a lot of symbolism and it really leaves you contemplating certain things about reality and how we perceive things.
Although I did quite like the book, I liked his other book, Hersenschimmen, better because I felt so much more connected with that main character than with this one. Eclips fits much more into the stereotype of Dutch literature where the characters just don't do much for you, they're not likeable and you have a couple of very boring and mostly disgustingly written sexscenes because "it's edgy and edgy means good literature" (that is something I still haven't figured out?).
So if you want to read Dutch literature, I definitely recommend Bernlef, but maybe not this one but Herschenschimmen.
Happy reading!
