Find out in Kristie Leigh Maguire's Second Chances: Love Lost, Love Found. Set in rural Wyoming, Second Chances is a sweet contemporary western romance that will warm your heart.
One reader stated, "I read it through in an evening, and felt as if I had spent that evening with 'salt of the earth' folk." Another reader said, "I loved the double, no triple, second chance. It was a very sweet ending."
The author, Kristie Leigh Maguire, got the inspiration for Second Chances: Love Lost, Love Found from an ad in the classified section of a newspaper and her imagination took over from there. The ad read: "Free wedding dress. Worn only once by mistake."
Kristie Leigh Maguire and her husband have lived all over the United States and many foreign countries while following his career. While living in Japan, she found it very difficult to find books to read that were written in English. This situation was intolerable as she was an avid reader and had been known to resort to reading cereal boxes if nothing else was available. Have you ever tried to read a cereal box written in Japanese? It was not a pretty picture. Ms. Maguire began writing her own books just to have something to read. She discovered a new passion in writing; thus her career as a romance novelist was born.
She was voted Best Up and Coming Author of the Year and her novel Desert Heat was voted Best Romance of the Year by the Affaire de Coeur Magazine. Her novels Cabin Fever and No Lady and Her Tramp was in the Top Ten at the Preditor & Editors Poll. Her novel Affairs of the Heart was an Amazon Number One book in Sensual Romance.
Although Ms. Maguire is originally from the South and will always remain Southern at heart, she and her husband now live in a small town in Nevada. During her expatriate years, she lived in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Aruba, Thailand, Japan and three times in Saudi Arabia.
Inbreeding. This is the only answer that can explain why the characters acted the way they did.
I have no idea where to start. First off, the writing was bad. The plot and character development were worse, but the dialogue and monologue musings were just something that hit me harder.
Why?
Well, if the characters were so unlikable and the plot made me depressed, did the sentence building have to butcher my brain, as well? That's just not fair, lady!
As for the characters…the ‘hero’ has officially won the ‘the worst human being around’ award in my book.
This is our hero: The little darling had a hard on for a woman when he went in to town to get supplies. Naturally, because of the hard on, he ditched his long time girlfriend and married a complete stranger in sexy jeans. He did not feel an ounce of regret until his wife left him for her next meal ticket to famedom. Like...five days after they married. And less than a month after they met. After the slutty wife was out of the picture our hero goes all ‘Gosh, she would have never made a good rancher's wife! I shouldda married Janie!’ That is your reason, you loser? And frankly, no way can I ever get over the fact that in the beginning of the book he states that the ow and him had such explosive sex he had to marry her! Well, the only smart thing the heroine said in the whole book was that he was pretty much responsible for her being bad in bed - when you consider the fact that she only slept with him! Let me repeat -THE LOSER! Everything in this book made me depressed. The heroine and the ytter pining over this asshat - most depresseing of all.
Samantha had dazzled him for sure. Her beauty and her passion had blinded him. The chemistry between them had certainly been for real. There’s no way she could have faked the passion. Could she? Mike knew it had been real on his part. He felt like he had died and gone to heaven when he and Samantha made love. He had never experienced anything like it before in his life. Not that he had been with too many women before Samantha. Actually, he had never been with any other woman but Jane before he met Samantha. Making love with Samantha was like Fourth of July fireworks lighting up the night sky. Making love with Jane was like slipping on a pair of familiar cowboy boots. The brilliance of the fireworks with Samantha had made him forget that there was nothing wrong with a comfortable pair of boots that fit him perfectly.
What a charmer, is he not? Wouldn’t you want to get him back with all your might? I sure would! And I sure wish i was somebodys old smelly boot! Not.
Btw, I was completely flabbergasted with the fact that everybody said how Mike never gave Jane a ring so there were no real promises. I….what? They have been going out since they were 13!!! They were in a 10 year relationship! Who cares if they were engaged?? The man CHEATED with some random girl in a saloon, for Pete’s sake! THAT was the first transgression. And the second one was marrying her. But for the love of…why would they all say he had no real obligation toward Jane because he never asked her to marry him? Is fidelity only applicable in marriage? And, gosh, what would have happened if he met Sammy Joe while married? Would he get a hard on over her yellow t-shirt then? *snort*
Was this a bad book? Why yes, yes it was. And I really don't say this often! The hero was a zero, the ow was a cranky whore with ideas of grandeur and the heroine was a doormat extraordinaire! Still, it actually made me laugh out loud a few times. How? Well, out of sheer disbelief.
He couldn’t imagine his life without Jane in it. Even when he had foolishly married Samantha, he had somehow thought Jane would still be in his life in some way, shape, or form.
Ah, the utter absurdness of it. Such fun! Still, if you want to save your $, and your time, be on the safe side and skip this book.
The female lead was pathetic and Mike was an asshole who did not love her or even respect her but she still hung about like a fool. So if you like books where guy really doesn't think much of his leading lady and is in love with ow and female lead who will accept anything as long she has her guy then this book is for you! I myself deleted it and wished I never read such a horrible book.
Well even after reading all the bad reviews for this book my curiosity got the best of me and of course it seriously p'd me off! the hero was the biggest jerk, cheated on his long time girlfriend with a "girl" he just me and married her! I think what bothered me the most about this book was the heroine's attitude along with her friends and father. It almost seemed like no one cared that he cheated on her cause, well he's married now so you gotta move on with your life and stop sulking. UGH!!! then the OW leaves and he comes to his senses and all is forgive.WHATEVER!!!! save your time and read anything else
Hated, hated this book with passion. Bad, bad, bad, bad all around. Bad writing, bad plot, horrible characters.
The so-called H is a waste of space, a whiny, annoying momma's boy, who wants his cake and wants to eat it too. He dumps his long (seriously long) time girlfriend for a barfly, who is just 18 and what the heck is she doing in that bar? His reason for marrying her: jeez, I told her I would... But what about TSTL Jane, you know, the woman that has been talking with you about getting married and starting a family for like a gazillion years? Well, too bad, screw Jane, well, not actually since having sex with her is like putting on a pair of comfortable boots (I am pretty sure Jane died at that part, she was sooooo flattered), getting it on with Sammy whats-her-name is like fireworks. I need me some fireworks. Also, she is country singer and she is super duper good. She is totally going to make it, she has it all, the face, the body, the voice, she is awesomeness in a slutty package! He is crying like a 2-year old throwing a tantrum when sweet, tarty Sammy Jo/Lynn/whatever crappy name it was leaves him. And like two days later, he is crying because Jane is the love of his life. Yep, I am totally buying it, I can feel that love just oozing out of him and TSTL Jane too.
Also, why the heck do we get Slutty OW's POV?? Am I supposed to feel bad for a user, who, in the end, gets everything she ever wanted??? I think the "H" felt worse for losing his jeep to whats-her-name than for hurting Jane.
Oh, and the parentals also feel the love, isn't it grand? Now Jane and Matt are stepsiblings, gf and bf and soul mates! Such darlings! And Sammy is famous! She made it at just 18, in the country singing industry, on her own (probably on her back, but what the heck, right?), with no backup, no money, no friends, no nothing! SHE DID IT! she is just that awesome! yay!
Where to start...a story with one of the top 10 worst men portraying a man supposedly a hero of he story, he was weak, stupid, faithless and hateful....now onto his worse qualities..... yeah those were his finer points. His heroine was stupid, naive, and believed herself still in love with that man. The two leads in this story have been a couple for a long time, not officially engaged but have a understanding.... well that goes out the window when a idiot hero heads into town and sees a flaming haired bar singer whom he sleeps with that very night and then two weeks later marries, without telling his longtime gf...and his justification is that she is exciting and he is crazy about her and he had to keep his word as he asked her....uh duh you big loser you already had a gf and if we are playing on honor perhaps you should honor that you faithless loser. His lazy new bride we are supposed o like... she is lazy and does nothing but sit on the porch playing her guitar as she is going to be a star.... she is a shiny penny...and worth half that...she steals his jeep and leaves him high and dry 2 months in as she thought he was wealthy and she was in love....uh yeah... right... and she is 18...although her husband doesn't know how old she is/where her people are from...so this is a story about three people who you don't want to know and once you meet them you hope they all end up alone as none of them are like able... the only people in here I liked were her father and his mother. I hated all the rest and shockingly there is a hea.... believe able...no...grovel...no....do you trust it...NO.... he is a jerk...she is a fool
The storyline was good. The writing? Well, not sure how old this author is but if she is not in grade or middle school then she must have written this when she was.
Mike & Jane have grown up, together, on neighboring ranches, kissed & declared their love for one another at 13 & 12. It's always been assumed that they would marry, but suddenly Mike goes off the deep end, marrying a total stranger he met 2 weeks before. Is Jane upset. You BET!!!! This is a story of love rocked to the core by betrayal. Do the characters react like you think they should? Not a chance...BUT they react like real people (some, at least) do.
In the background is Jane's widower Father, and Mike's widowed Mother, who finally admit that they don't think of each other as Brother & Sister any more. Second chances do happen, and watching this undercurrent develop is endearing.
This is a clean book, of heartbreak, love and second chances.
I just could not get into this book at all. I probably wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't so short.
I did not relate to AnY of the characters. This is largely due to the fact that the story was written almost likea script of conversations, which did not lend itself to a whole lot of character development. The story itself was ok, but it's a story that has been told before, and told much better.
This book really fell flat for me in a big bad way.
Second Chances: Love Lost, Love Found by Kristie Leigh Maguire is a contemporary western romance, but the writing has the feel of the classic old-time romance novels. I found myself smiling as I read this book, because it made me think of how much my mother would have enjoyed it. We would have each read it and discussed it for days.
I enjoyed the "Second Chance" story line between Jim and Liz very much, but when it came to Jane and Mike, I'm torn. After the unspeakable way Mike treated Jane, I'm not sure that he deserved a second chance, or maybe it was just the way the second chance was resolved in the book. Kristie Leigh Maguire was able to make the character of Jane came alive for me, and I became so invested in her and her emotions that I just wanted to beat the crap out of Mike.
I find that days after reading this book, I'm still thinking about it. You just can't go wrong with a book that you can't stop thinking about after reading it. I truly wish mom were still around to discuss it with.
This a very light-hearted story of loss and love. No, it isn't some great Romance work. Rather, it's something many of us can relate to. A jilted lover, despondency, distrust, an awakening and forgiveness.
How many have wondered if they could forget the mistakes of the past while still harboring feelings for our one true love? I know many who have traveled the path, and that is what this book is about. That is what I enjoyed the most of the story, as I traveled this path not long ago. I wondered if the pain and hurt of the past would resurface after so many years, or would we be able to let sleeping dogs lie and start anew.
Kristie has a writing style that is fun, light and entertaining.
Who will like this? Anyone looking for a quick fun read about romance and second chances.
This was a very pleasant read and one that didn't take an inordinate amount of time to finish. The story was good--we all feel for someone who is left "holding the bag" when a love of long-standing gets the temporary hots for a flashy young thing and dumps the future they had planned together. It has the feel of one of the paperback romances of the 70's and that isn't all bad. However, I think the writing wasn't on a very mature level--I thought there was lots of repetition that was unnecessary and moaning and groaning on the part of the characters that was a bit overdone. But I say again, it was a pleasant read and I enjoyed it from that standpoint.
