Miss Charity Radforde prefers museums to balls, lectures to dinner parties, and spinsterhood to matrimony. Her overbearing mother disagrees. An obedient daughter, she spends her time in London with insufferable suitors, not in intellectual pursuits. Desperate, she proposes a simple subterfuge to the one man with no interest in marrying her. Mr. Edmund Glenhaven is a third son determined to prove his worth. Counter to his family's hopes, he's in London not to find a wife but to gain sponsors for a scientific expedition. After a chance meeting and a revealing conversation, he finds himself in an unlikely arrangement with the beguiling Miss Radforde. What starts as a diversion before he departs England soon becomes a reason to stay. The longer their false courtship lasts, the stronger their real feelings grow. As Charity learns to fight for the life she wants, Edmund begins to question what he truly needs. Could they possibly find true love through a counterfeit attachment?
I loved this book so much! I love a nerdy, science-loving heroine; even better when the nerdy science-loving heroine finds a nerdy, science-loving hero. Even better when the nerdy, science-loving hero fully supports the heroine in her love of science. . The supporting characters really helped round out this swoony regency romance. I'm happy to know there are other books planned for some of these characters. . I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. . "I don't like you hiding your true opinions to please those inferior to you in taste and intellect. Good sense is in short supply and it's a pity to pretend you don't have any." . I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. . The Counterfeit Attachment is available 2/28/23.
Wow! I cannot believe how incredible this book was! The gloriously insane amount of research that went into this story was felt, and very much appreciated, in every chapter. You are transported back to regency London and Holli truly makes history come alive. I was constantly pulling up maps of London to see where the characters go, it made the story so much better and richer. Both Charity and Edmund were utter perfection and completely perfect for each other! I loved them so much and how they helped, supported, and understood each other. The plot moved along smoothly, the conflicts were believable and were thoroughly resolved, and the characters were either great allies or antagonists. Basically I loved everything about this book and from the first to last page I couldn’t get enough. I *cannot* wait for more books about these wonderful Bath Schoolmates! Holli Jo Monroe is easily becoming one of my favorite authors and I will always recommend her books! If you’re looking for a fun, informative and historically beautiful regency romance this is the perfect book for you!
I received an ARC from the author, a positive review was not required but happily given.
Monroe is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more of her books. A Counterfeit Attachment is a very well researched historical regency romance. I absolutely adored Charity and Edmund! Their first meeting was so unusual and then the next time they met I felt like I could see the expressions on their faces. Monroe does a fabulous job writing and I felt like I was a bystander watching everything happen.
I loved Charity’s spunk and her intelligence. Edmund was adorable and I loved that he never seemed to give up. They felt like they were just right for each other but I didn’t know if they would realize that. There are so many historical details that are scattered throughout the book like jewels on a treasure hunt. I loved the historical aspects along with the slow build romance. While it took a while for the story to be set up, once the pace picked up I had to know how it all would end. Monroe does a great job keeping the reader wondering how and if things will work out.
This is a second book in a series but I have not read the previous book and it worked fine as a standalone for me. This is an excellent clean historical regency romance and I look forward to reading more from Monroe. I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
We know I love the fake dating trope! This was a fun take on it! I loved that in this story the characters felt like equals. They were perfect for one another but still able to grown into their own. I loved that Charity was herself around Edmund from the beginning. She didn’t hold back “……save your breath to cool your soup, I have no intention of marrying.” That escalated quickly haha. When the fake stops being fake….“He tucked the hair behind her ear. His knuckles grazed her neck and a shudder ran through her. Her heart beat as if she had climbed ten more stories. Unable to meet his eyes, she watched his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed.” 🥹 “I want no part of a future that does not include you." Enjoyed this and now very intrigued about Kit’s story!
This sweet and clean romance by Holli Jo Monroe was completely charming! Charity and Edmund meet by accident, and dislike each other at first. They decide to begin a pretend courtship to achieve their own goals, but soon discover that they are perfect for each other. I loved all the historical details about London and the scientific community at that time. I felt like the pace was a little slow towards the end, but overall an enjoyable read.
"I don't like you hiding your true opinions to please those inferior to you in taste and intellect. Good sense is in short supply, and it is a pity to pretend you don't have any."
Read if you like: * Clean Romance * Enemies to Friends to Lovers * Fake Dating * Slow Burn Romance * Well Researched Historical Details * Great Character Arcs * Part of a series, but can be read as as stand alone
Charity Radforde is a brilliant bluestocking whose love of scientific learning (most specifically botany) has convinced her that she would would prefer spinsterhood to marriage as it would afford her the autonomy to follow her passion for learning. Her domineering mother, however, has other ideas.
Edmund Glenhaven entered the church as his profession but his true passion is botanical science. He is attempting to find sponsorship for a scientific expedition to America.
After an awkward meet cute, Charity and Edmund find themselves repeatedly in company with one another. They hatch a plan to form a counterfeit attachment which would enable them both to spend time persuing their respective goals, rather than wasting time meeting prospective spouses at social functions.
I loved watching these two find not only their own strength but sharing it with each other. Their friendship and more develops naturally.
This is the second novel I've read by Holli Jo Monroe and I truly appreciate how well researched her writing is, from historical details to scientific ones. I felt transported reading this book.
Favorites: * The habit of reciting taxonomy to help calm nerves * Vivid descriptions of historical sites * The sweet small gestures as well as the grand gestures * Holli Jo wrote a strong intelligent FMC that isn't overbearing and perfect. She is brilliant, compassionate, loyal, and flawed. * Edmunds Family (especially Kit, I really hope he gets his own story!)
Holli Jo Monroe has become a must read author for me in this genre. I can't wait to see what she writes next.
*I received an ARC of this book from the author, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I actually enjoyed this book so much that I purchased a physical copy as soon as they were available.
Charity is set not to marry and remain a spinster. Her mother has other plans. Charity is a Bluestocking, and her mother doesn’t like it. Her mother does not wish for her to act “improper” with reading and talking of botany, speaking her mind and that sort of thing. Edmund also does not wish to marry. He wants to go on an expedition to America, specifically the Rocky Mountains to explore and do scientific study of the land. Charity and Edmund meet by her saving him from being run over by a horse, which he does not see and thinks she is crazy. She tells him her mind and storms off. Later, Edmund’s mother tells her of a Miss Radforde who is an eligible heiress, that she wants Edmund to spend time with at party. He dreads it but goes and Miss Radforde is none other than Charity. They sit by each other and speak plainly without filter and not pleasantly. But others perceive they are getting along. Later Charity comes up with a plan to avoid her mother’s scheming to get her married. She asks Edmund to a ruse, of courting. This way she can have freedom to explore the town, and no pressure from her mother and Edmund agrees to get out of dinners and balls and tries to plan his expedition and doesn’t mind escorting Charity around. Of course soon, false courtship soon develops real feelings and then what will they do?
This is a great story! An enemies to friends to lovers scenario. I love how straightforward the characters are leaving no room for miscommunication. If they think something has occurred that is “miscommunication” they, wait for it, talk it out! What? You can do that? Loved that! They always talk over everything! Their relationship is so great. Loved this story and it is very clean! Definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I was so excited about this book, and it definitely did not disappoint! I love Holli Jo’s writing style and how much thought and research she puts into all of the historical details in her novels.
Both Charity, Miss Radforde, and Edmund, Mr. Glenhaven, are both like-minded. Science and botany loving and very stubborn. Neither wants to marry but wants to forge their own paths and accomplish their dreams.
The actual scientific knowledge in this book was astounding and added so much character (and humor 😍😂) to the plot and storyline.
“I can’t have you spouting nonsense about scientific classification systems. Not a single eligible man wants to hear your ideas on such things.”
“He quieted the fluttering in his stomach by reciting the taxonomy of butterflies in his head.”
Probably because I eat bananas on the daily and have banana trees in my backyard, the scene in Kew Gardens was one of my favorites.
“That is a common fruit in the tropics but rare in England. Even when it can be grown it does not often bear fruit. It is a banana tree.” “I have never heard of bananas,”
I also loved that Charity and Edmund were so open and blunt with each other, even though they were awkward and more closed off around other people. The witty banter between them had me laughing out loud!
“And let us dispense with idle chatter. Save your breath to cool your soup, I have no intention of marrying.”
“She would make him an excellent wife. What an inconvenient thought!”
I loved the first book in this series ‘The Imagined Attachment’ and loved this one just as much. Both can be read as a standalone.
If you’re looking for a hilarious, entertaining, and educational historical romance, definitely check this book out! I highly enjoyed every minute of reading it!
Read it for the: -Nerds in love trope -Fake courtship -Supportive family themes -Complex friendships -Character growth
Romance/Spice: Sweet, Kissing only Final Rating: 4 / 5
In a popular genre, The counterfeit attachment stood out to me for its great writing and unique characters.
While the plot started slow for me, once the pace picked up, I could not stop reading. While this is a fake courtship trope, I found the interactions between Edmund and Charity to be refreshing. I loved the initial meet-cute, and the progression of their friendship. I was pleased to receive the classic “faking dating but real feelings” theme. But what I enjoyed the most was that this story explored so much more than that. The author added realistic personal conflicts which added to the plot.
Edmund and Charity were ambitious people, intelligent, but uncomfortable with the idea of marriage. Edmund was determined to make a name for himself in the scientific world, while Charity wanted independence and the freedom to study what she pleased. These themes played really well into their romance, and I loved that they slowly began to realize they were perfect for each other.
I also enjoyed the secondary characters, most notably the members of Edmund's family. Kit was my favorite and I hope to see more of him in future works.
This is a story that grows on you. The more that I think about it, the better it gets.
*This story is part of series but can be read as a stand-alone. *I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Holli blew it out of the park with her newest book, A Counterfeit Attachment! Her way of winding a story with so many different characters and aspects is truly magical.
I fell in love with the main characters Charity and Edmund as well as the side characters that hinted at future stories. 😉
The amount of plant knowledge that was in this regency romance really pulled me in. I am a bit of a closet herbalist and the story intrigued that part of me. I found myself sucked into the scientific names and aspects that made themselves known through the story.
I have been on Holli's A-team for all her books so far and I have to just say she is brilliant! She is a tour guide by day and an author by night. She winds her stories so poetically and packs them full of enduring attributes and facts that you can tell she truly studies a lot for her books. Holli is one of my new absolute favorite regency authors! I can't wait for her next book!!!
"She placed her hand on his and swallowed. His fingers closed over hers, anchoring her and quieting her fear. She leaned on his strength as she stepped onto the balcony. The two of them squeezed between the bricks of the narrow archway, the railing immediately before them was all that separated them from the air. Her breath came quickly and he squeezed her hand. He had not released it. Did he wish to hold on as she did? “Are you well?” “Quite. It is…” She glanced at him. He was not looking at the vista before them, but at her. His gaze was soft, tender. She looked away. He released her hand."
Oh, how I loved this story! I gave it five stars but definitely would have given it ten if there were more!
What a delightful story! Charity 💚 Edmund
‘The Counterfeit Arrangement’ by Holli Jo Monroe is one of those stories you get fully immersed in. From the historical facts to the descriptions of London, and the clean romance to the counterfeit arrangement, it sure draws you in on an enjoyable read. I just loved all the well researched and beautiful descriptions of London sites that many times made me feel like I was walking through its streets. Loved it!
Charity Radforde returns to London after finishing the Mrs. Piper’s Seminary for Young Ladies in Bath. While there she enjoyed the freedom of pursuing intellectual studies. But when she comes back home her mother’s whole purpose is to find her a suitor and see her married.
Edmund Glenhaven also returns to London from his country parish. His ultimate goal is not to find a wife but to procure sponsorships to go on an expedition to America.
But when both of them collided “literally” then you are in for an amazing story…
“Miss, there are far better ways of catching a husband than literally throwing yourself at them.” Her cheeks burned. “I was saving you!” (🤯😠😤😡)
I also appreciated reading about botany. Being a flower gardener myself I was able to relate to the characters in a unique way. I knew what they were talking about being lost on the intricacies of a flower by observing the flora around them and visiting gardens for the sole purpose of studying the plants. I really enjoyed all the plant references.
In closing, I recommend this book wholeheartedly if you like to read about the regency era with well researched historical facts and sites… Exeter Change Royal Society Bullock’s Museum London Botanical Gardens Somerset House
Of enemies to lovers and fake engagements, and humor…
“That is, you are a very singular—but I had not thought—or rather it would be an honor.” Edmund closed his mouth to stop the tide of nonsense. “How clearly you express yourself,” she said dryly.”
“As she read, Mr. Glenhaven leaned over, his head and shoulder drawing close to hers…. When she glanced at him, she saw his eyes moving over the words. “Is my reading inadequate?” she asked. When he gave no indication of hearing or moving away, she snapped the book closed.” 😂
And romance… “I want no part of a future that does not include you.” (sigh)
Truly, beautifully done Ms. Monroe! 💛
I received an eARC of this book from the author and a positive review was not required. All opinions are my own and I share them voluntarily.
Miss Charity Radforde is a bit of a bluestocking who only wishes to remain single so she can read, study, and do as she pleases. Her mother, on the other hand, wants Charity to marry well.
Mr. Edmund Glenhaven currently resides in the country at his parish, but has come to London hoping to find a sponsor to help him study the plant life in America. His mother wants him to find a wife, but he is not looking to be tied down when he is ready to travel.
He and Charity do not meet under normal circumstances, nor do they find their initial meeting delightful. After meeting again, they find that if they were to fake an attachment to one another, they could actually remain single and go after their goals, but we all know what happens in fake relationships! I loved the slow burn romance they had as they went from somewhat enemies to friends to more.
Not only do they find that they have similar interests, they develop a true friendship and respect for one another. Their relationship is completely open and honest and I loved all of the sweet gestures that Edmund made.
This was such a sweet story and I truly enjoyed it. If you are looking for a clean read with a strong female (who does not come across as overbearing) and a kind and thoughtful mmc, then this is the book for you!
I loved Edmund's family and I hope we get both Kit and Sophy's stories.
“He tucked the hair behind her ear. His knuckles grazed her neck and a shudder ran through her. Her heart beat as if she had climbed ten more stories. Unable to meet his eyes, she watched his Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed. “What sort of proposal?” she murmured. “I propose we end our arrangement and you allow me to court you properly.” “ 🌼 The Counterfeit Attachment is about Charity and Edmund, two people who love science and their independence. They are both uninterested in ever getting married and strike a bargain to help each other avoid the institution. However, spending the rest of your life with someone begins to sound more like a delightful possibility the more time they spend with each other. Will they find their lives are better together than alone? 🌼 This book was an absolute delight! Charity and Edmund’s journey from two people with independent hopes and dreams to people whose hopes and dreams included each other was so wonderful to watch! 🌼 This lovely story has a combination of: 💛 Regency romance 💛 Fake relationship 💛 Female STEM character 💛 A hilarious meet cute 💛 Exploration/Discovery 💛 Romance- of course! 🥰
Also, this author’s writing makes me think of her as a modern day Jane Austen! She weaves a tale that is engaging and enjoyable, you won’t want to miss! 💛 I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was the sweetest regency romance! Edmund and Charity are such realistic characters! Their mutual desire for independence draws them together, but the vision of a future together makes them consider a change of plans. I loved how their feelings changed over the course of their “fake” relationship. It wasn’t instant or sudden, but rather both of them grew to slowly realize how important the other was. Charity was very mature in her friendship with Penelope I thought. There were several instances where she could have been hurt and pulled away, but instead she tried to see things from her friend’s perspective. I felt for her struggles with her mother so much! I do wish we were given more history on Charity’s family, because I didn’t realize that her parents were not on good terms until towards the end and that would have helped me understand a couple of things more. Edmund was adorable in his wandering thoughts and deep curiosity of the world. I loved how he wasn’t afraid to go after what he knew he wanted. That didn’t mean he wasn’t nervous, but he was brave enough to do so anyway. And can I just say I LOVED loved loved the expedition to America idea. Their shared love of botany and science and exploration was unique and refreshing and I love that. It gave me “Wives and Daughters” vibes and I’ve always loved that movie. If you like:
📖 fake dating trope 📖 regency romance 📖 closed door and swoony 📖 wives and daughters vibes 📖 science and botany
Then trust me; you will love this delightful regency romance!
Thank you to the author for an e-arc. All thoughts are my own.
What a unique Regency Era story. The amount of research done for this book is so impressive. This is not your run-of-the-mill Recency romance. There is so much history incorporated into the story without detracting from it. The tidbits dropped in were done so naturally.
The main characters are charming in their eccentricities. The side characters are ones you want to love or love to hate. The story isn't predictable and keeps you invested right through the epilogue.
I also loved reading the author's notes. Being familiar with some of Holli Jo Monroe's other work and social media channels, I know that she puts a large amount of time into research and loves to share that with readers and followers.
I did receive a complimentary advanced copy of the book to read, but no positive review was required. To be honest, this review feels lacking in comparison to how I felt about the book. I read more slowly than usual trying to help find potential errors prior to publication, but sometimes I had to force myself to slow down because I was so eager to find out what happened! I look forward to reading more from this author, not just in this series, but in general. She has talent! Excuse me while I go read the first book in the series, The Imagined Attachment!!
‘The Counterfeit Attachment’ by Holli Jo Monroe, book 2 in The Bath Schoolmates Series:
“Their eyes met and his smile hit her like Cupid’s arrow.”
This is such a sweet regency romance between two plant loving scholars. Charity Radforde the bluestocking, and Edmund Glenhaven the intellectual both prefer scholarly lectures and studying plants to dancing in ballrooms. I loved their awkward meet cute, enemies to friends to more, fake relationship, forced proximity, perfect for each other, slow burn romance!
To avoid their matchmaking mamas, they enter into a counterfeit attachment and begin their fake courtship. It was a joy watching them get to know and understand each other and slowly fall in love!!! The way they help each other along the way touched my heart! Plus the forced proximity is soo good! Their relationship grows so much throughout the story and it kept me turning pages to see what would happen next!
Due to their fake courtship, they’re able to go on wonderful adventures and see so many sights in London! I felt transported there through the author’s impressive historical research and lovely writing! I found myself googling these places and wanting to visit too!
I also loved: 🌼Edmund’s family, especially Kit 🌼the sweet grand gestures 🌼I loved the romance, the attraction, the fake courting, the sweet chemistry, the almost kisses and the swoony kisses 🌼I loved the many places they visited in London 🌼 I enjoyed the group of schoolmate friends and look forward to their stories 🌼I loved the sweetest ending and conclusion that made me smile and my heart happy
This book was a joy to read. If you enjoy beautiful writing, being immersed in the regency era, with a sweet touching love story, then you’ll enjoy this light hearted romance.
🌼Releases February 28th!
Thank you to the author for the arc copy. All opinions are my own.
Book review: The Counterfeit Attachment by Holli Jo Monroe . You can really tell how much research went into this book! I love a well researched book because I always learn something, and I feel like the research really adds to the depth of the story. Holli Jo has such a great way of creating characters that feel real. These characters in particular really went through a lot in order to be together. There were times they were truly fighting against all odds. To be fair though, a lot of the odds against them were simple misunderstandings that once cleared up, the story moved really fast. I would have liked to see more post resolution rather than so much struggle. I think the struggle made the end sweeter, but I feel like it ended really abruptly. All the continued conflict also made the book a little slow for me to read. Other than that, the characters were charming and I loved how they worked together so well. Their compatibility is what I loved most about this book! I am excited to read whatever is next! . Content: clean romance
A big thank you to the author for an eARC. It was a pleasure to be able to read and review this book.
This story was absolutely beautiful! I adored it from start to finish. It kept me up way past my bedtime.
Now where to start. First off the development of the relationship between Charity and Edmund was wonderfully grounded and even though there were moments of doubts I truly appreciated how they came back to relying in their trust. Their dilemmas felt real and personal, which helped me root for them all the more.
The wordplay and banter at first, between these two characters had me in stitches. And their sweet moments just made me sigh. I love how they came to really love each other.
A pure highlight for me is the scenery and settings, the author takes us too. One of her talents is truly the history. I loved experiencing new and unique places in London as I read, it made me long to explore that fascinating city with them.
I could keep going, but in all honesty this story has stolen my heart and is a new favorite. Highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a sweet romance, rich with historical detail, and can't help but love characters. I truly look forward to what this author comes out with next!
This is the second book in The Bath Schoolmates series and I am loving getting to know this unique group of friends more. This book focuses on Charity, our bluestocking, and Edmond, a man who values honesty and intellect.
Our main characters meet under unusual circumstances and each encounter after becomes more and more unusual… in the best possible way! I love the fake courtship and how this gradual development of their real feelings for each other enfolded. I appreciate how this book is set over the course of a longer timeframe, so that we could really see the progression of the relationship. And the many settings! It was so fun to get to read about the cool attractions and museums of London at the time. Especially places we don’t usually get to explore in this particular genre.
This was a unique and refreshing take on a regency romance! I definitely recommend this series!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved The Counterfeit Attachment. Holli Jo Monroe writes characters whose anxieties, vulnerablilities and even overthinking wouldn't be out of place in a contemporary romance. I know I was just as unsure of myself at that age!
What do you do, as a Bluestocking, with an overbearing mother who is determined to marry you off, and to deny you any intellectual fun? Find someone who is equally intellectual, of course. And who will pretend to be your beau. And who will give you plenty of opportunity for debate, discussion, and botany.
The characters are charming in their insecurities, and they have such real, vivid emotions. Charity's mother is playing her own games, and is delightfully vile; friend-turned-companion (ie, mother's spy) has her own baggage and is trying her best. Mother's preferred love interests are great examples of Regency gents who are perhaps not sold on the idea that women can be intelligent partners in life.
There's a great set up for a future novel. I can't wait to see what Holli Jo Monroe write next.
Fun regency romance with not one but two main characters interested in academia and science!
Charity wants nothing more than to spend her London season visiting museums instead of ballrooms but her mother is determined to see her marry well.
Edmund is planning on leaving the country on a scientific expedition and find his new friendship with Charity diverting as she understands and shares his interests.
Desperate, Charity proposes a fake courtship to Edmund. It would placate her mother and after all, Edmund is leaving anyway so what could go wrong?
Read it for -Regency romance -Fake dating/courtship -Enemies to friends to lovers -Main characters interested in academics and science -Character growth -Witty dialogue -Slow burn romance -Sweet kissing scenes!
Loved these uniqueness of the plot and characters! I loved all of the ways that Edmund and Charity supported and encouraged each other - so many sweet moments as well as grand gestures! So many fun scenes I can't list them all! If you like regency romance, this one needs to be on your list.
Thank you so much Holli Jo Monroe for this digital galley in exchange for my fair and honest review!
The Counterfeit Attachment is a historical regency romance set in London. The main character, Charity, has no care for finding a husband, but instead wants to study botanics and become a spinster. Edward is a third son determined to prove his worth, and wishes to travel to America and discover new species of plants on his scientific expedition. In hopes to dismiss suitors on both ends but make their mothers happy, the two devise a plan to fake court. But in the process, they both end up caring for more than plants.
I absolutely loved this book. I am all for an independent woman steminist romance, especially a historical one. This book had the enemies to lovers, flirty and academic banter, and drama that I was looking for! I also loved that while the world was trying to pull them down, Edward and Charity continued to build each other up and cultivate each other's interests the entire time.
The Counterfeit Attachment is out to the world on February 28, so RUN, don't walk, to get yourself a copy.
This is a new author for me so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I absolutely loved this book. The characters were wonderful- Edmund and charity were hilarious. So quirky and clueless at times. They were both people I could be friends with. It was well written and well researched. The main characters fascination with nature and learning was a nice change from the usual brainless men and women of the ton. I haven’t read the other book in this series and I had no problem enjoying it so it can be read as a stand-alone.
This was an original look at Regency England. I enjoyed learning about the scientific side of things.
Charity was an obedient daughter who gradually comes into her own as she realizes what she truly wants.
Edmund was and endearing hero who was the perfect match for Charity. It was good to see how the complemented each other and gave each other support and confidence.
If you like clean regency romance you will enjoy this book.
If this plot was also based on a movie I’m going to need more hints because it didn’t register for me.
This was a quick regency romance between two logical lovers. (Is it a faux pas to say nerd love if you’re also nerdy?) Edmund’s family is exemplary. There were several storylines that were left incomplete (Kit, Mary, Penelope), where I imagined how they might intertwine. Secrets for other books? The epilogue dialogue was a little too cheesy, but I appreciated the follow up on their timeline.
My favorite read is one I can drop into without a thought. I don’t need to remember an elaborate back story, ruse or invented language. I love those too - but I love when I can unplug and live with the characters. Walk in the streets of the city on the page. Writers like Holli Jo get it right every time. The counterfeit attachment is a sweet read to sway you through a weekend.
Ahhhh this was SO FUN! I love the connection Charity and Edmund form over the course of the story; bless their little nerd hearts. But I also love the way they encourage each other to be their best selves—that’s OTP material right there. The story of two forward-thinking people against the rigid backdrop of Regency England was so intriguing, and made for a compelling adventure!
The first 75% of the book and the last 5% were excellent. The middle 20% was filler and could have been condensed, which would only have resulted in improving the pace of the novel. That 20% dragged, and I found myself skimming. Overall 3.5 stars. I will be reading more from this clean, wholesome author.
A book as informative as it was fun! I loved all the historical locations the book mentioned and described. I also loved how well the two main characters suited each other, so it was such a fulfilling read to find out how they come together in the end!
There is so much to enjoy about this sweet regency romance! I loved that some of the characters had an interest in the Natural Sciences! I am excited to see what comes next in the series!
*Note- can be read as a stand alone
I received an ARC from the author and all opinions are my own.
