In this sequel to Cultivating Genius, Gholdy Muhammad adds a fifth pursuit—joy—to her groundbreaking framework. Dr. Muhammad shows how joy, which is rooted in the cultural and historical realities of Black students, can enhance our efforts to cultivate identity, skills, intellect, and criticality for ALL students, giving them a powerful purpose to learn and contribute to the world. Dr. Muhammad’s wise implementation advice is paired with model lessons that span subjects and grade levels.
I presented a chapter for a course this summer. I did also buy the physical book! So much to take back to my students! I’m already using joy in my teaching and will continue to develop more!!
Mainly 4 stars for second half. The first half could have been shorter and less touchy feely at least for me. I know others are motivated by that sort of thing. I found it a little condescending. The second half is more action oriented covering all aspects of what is needed in education and worth going through regardless of relationship to a school.
It is a book for teachers or prospective teachers. It really does a lot to refocus the humanity of education and strips out a lot of the industrialized mindset and vocabulary of modern education. There were parts I disagreed with or thought she took too far, but was overall pleased with it.
