This was not at all the book I thought I had bought - woops - this is a really cheesy self help book for people who have never thought of emotions before. 😐

The book looks at managing negative emotions and maintaining good emotion health, outlining the consequences if the changes are not made such as health and psychological.

The 6 main emotions covered are:
- Happiness
- Sadness
- Anger
- Fear
- Disgust

Combined, they can create 3 types of responses:
- Subjective
- Physiological
- Behavioural

The book also distinguishes the difference between emotion and mood, providing lists of symptoms and possible solutions such as mindful immersion and mindful appreciation. Managing doesn't mean entirely losing the negative emotions, but gaining control over them instead of the other way around. This is a good guide to refer to when understanding how negative emotions can be beneficial when managed in the right way.

I was a bit skeptical when I first started reading about some of the information provided, but Dyer cites her sources at the end of the book. I think this was a good read, overall. Had I bought a hard copy I wouldn’t have regretted spending the money. In fact, this book might be useful to keep and refer back to or reread entirely a few times. I found some of the information was thought-provoking and helped me view things differently. I absolutely loved that Dyer talked about the positive sides of anger and the downsides of a constant search for positivity. I think this perspective is quite rare nowadays. Her viewpoints on the topics just made sense. I recommend this book to anyone who experiences emotions.

What does it take to change from within: A roadmap, a fully-functioning toolset, perhaps a guide. This book furnishes all the tools and techniques needed to decipher and heal from the undesirable emotions you are suffering from (either consciously or subconsciously). I especially like the section explaining how past negative emotions are internalized and imprinted on our body. Left unresolved they can causing damage and disease until they're identified and released. I can't wait to use this book to delve into my physique and see what experiences I'm still punishing myself for.

I'm very happy I read this book, it helped me, and it will help you.

This is a significant book in today’s world. There is so much negativity, violence, anger, and defensiveness surrounding all of us. We need to learn the skills in order to address our emotions in the midst of today’s world. We feel an emotion and then have a choice to decide how we will meet that emotion in healthy ways. Will we strike out with violence? Will we hold on to those reactionary feelings, our snap reactions, and revisit them again and again?
Dr. Dyer clearly defines the consequences of reactionary living, and then invites the reader to consider a healthier way to center oneself and begin living as a rational, not reactive participant in life. If you find yourself obsessing over conflicts in your life, with reactive or compulsive behaviors, you will find her affirmations of the emotions you may be experiencing and how to choose a better way. Take a break and read this book. You just might find yourself in charge of your emotions instead of someone who allows their emotions to be in charge.

I close each Judy Dyer book feeling educated, relieved, and like I can take the knowledge and tips away and adapt them into my daily living. She’s a go-to author for growing internally.

This particular book dives into emotions. Judy breaks down aspects of our emotions and how to deal with them properly. This is perfect timing for me because I’ve been healing from a parent who is a narcissist the last couple years and I didn’t realize that my emotions were tamped down a bit.

My biggest takeaway is that if we don’t deal with or express emotions, they will come out in other ways - such as sickness. I want to live a long healthy life!.

I will say I prefer this book over any counselor/ therapist I have ever sat with. I’ve struggled with my emotions ever since my early years of childhood. My family were the ones who unintentionally taught me that we keep emotions hidden, because that is what THEY were taught. I do not blame them, as this world can be a scary/ hard place to live in. This book opened my eyes to a whole different world for me! I cannot wait to use the tools in this book in my everyday life. All the tools that were listed, I would have never thought to do it on my own, but reading then all in this for some reason just made everything make sense! I absolutely adore this book, and the minds that made it!

The book started off really good but begin to fizzle out halfway through. It got really rudimentary and repetitive and lacked a lot of scientific evidence to back up the topics. Additionally, there seemed to be no real solutions and the few solutions were common sense, unoriginal, applied to multiple emotions and weren’t explained or expounded on. I would have loved if it got more in depth. This is a good surface level, superficial book about emotions for those interested in the subject.

The Power of Emotions: How to Manage Your Feelings and Overcome Negativity
Awesome book! Written succinctly to result in an easy read. Specific guided interventions for identification, for a change and control of emotions. Discusses both positive and negative emotions along with self reflection approaches. Finished book with an expanded knowledge of emotions. Personal implementation of given actions in this book has given me movement forward to be more positive. My perception of negative situations turns to a positive perception.

I absolutely loved and will re-read this book because it is relatively short (86 pages), goes straight to the point, and provides not only theory but also specific tools & strategies!
It's interesting to see that the problem is not really our emotions, but the source of them and how we can manage them.
If you think you know already a lot about that topic, you'll change your mind after reading this book!
I highly recommend it and will search for her other books, as well, thank you!

Really poor - full of pseudoscience, incorrect analysis, speculation and wild conjecture

Avoid reading this book. I should’ve known what I was getting into when 6 of the first 30 pages are listing emotions.

The book goes on to talk about some pseudoscience, energy healing, incorrect sports analysis and makes bold statements that don’t really have any grounding in science.

Had to put the book down and could not complete, which is a first for me.

I appreciated so much about this book... the way it's put together, healthy ways to handle emotions instead of suppressing them, and best of all was how childhood trauma and stored emotions can challenge us for much too long. I'm happy to have learned practical ways to put this advice into use.
