’Having a Guru is ideal. But what happens when there’s no one to show you the way, and the road ahead has no destination.’

Shui knows three things for sure- everything she’s been told about her family is a lie, she’s finally in possession of a priceless weapon, and she has absolutely no idea what to do next; she’s utterly lost, until she finds herself a reluctant guardian to two hidden children just like her, and in the middle of a hunt that began centuries ago when some men in red didn’t like girls with too much power; it seems like they still don’t.

And to top it all off, Anya’s been kidnapped and there’s a malevolent spider weaving a web in her room while someone is weaving one around her heart. With no one to guide her and the whisper of war in the wind, Shui is standing at the precipice of nothing good but perhaps something great. With no one to guide her, Shui must decide whether to take the plunge, alone. There’s a war coming, can she stop it? Does she even know how?

In this dark and breathtaking adventure, Reshma K Barshikar takes us back to the fantastical world of witches, magic, and a beautiful friendship between four friends who are standing at the crossroads of their lives, again.

"The Lost Prisoner" is the second installment of Reshma K. Barshikar's "The Hidden Children" series, and it is a wonderful addition to the ongoing saga. The story revolves around Shui, a character who discovers that her entire understanding of her family has been built on falsehoods. This revelation is just the beginning of her journey, as she also finds herself in possession of a priceless weapon with no clear direction on how to wield it.

The theme of hidden children with extraordinary abilities is a recurring motif in the series, and it continues to be a compelling element in this installment. The introduction of a malevolent spider weaving a web in Anya’s room is a clever metaphor for the intricate and dangerous web of intrigue that surrounds the characters.

As the story unfolds, the whisper of war looms in the background, creating a palpable sense of impending danger. One of the features of this book is the use of graphics, which play a pivotal role in enhancing the reader's connection to the story and their ability to visualize the narrative.

The author has crafted a rich and immersive world filled with complex characters and intricate plot threads. As readers stand with Shui on the precipice of uncertainty, they are not only drawn into a world of magic and intrigue but are also prompted to reflect on themes of power, identity, and destiny.

In conclusion, this book appeals to a wide range of readers, making it a versatile and enjoyable read for both children and adults.

Someone should tell you early on, like in third grade, that the choices you make have lasting consequences. No one tells you about the ripples on the lake and where they go, which stream they sneak into to find a way into an ocean of future trouble. No one tells you anything when you're little and you don't listen to them when you get older. Who would believe that one day, if I invited a girl to Diwali dinner, I would see an electric fence rise from the ground in a warrior village, and that I would create lightning bolts from the sky.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Reshma K Barshikar's Hidden Children series is a blessing to Indian fantasy literature. I fell in love with The Lost Grimoire when I read it 2020, and now in 2023, the sequel has pulled me into the world of Witana all over again. The opening chapter itself made me realise that this book was going to be much darker. The Lost Prisoner is intense, it’s emotional, and it’s full of magic.

If you asked me to condense my thoughts about the book in one sentence, I’d say, “I want to give Shui a hug.” The girl has been through so much, and it doesn’t look like she’s getting a break anytime soon. We dive deeper into Shui’s powers, her ambitions and her relationships. Admittedly, I wasn’t super invested in the friendship drama. Jai and Nallini are darlings, and Malvika was one of my favourites this time, but I only had eyes for Rumna. God, I love everything about her. Her love for Rahel and Shui made my heart soar (and weep, of course). I also really, really want to see how she and Esfah would interact— the two of them together would hold more power (both magical and charisma-induced) than any Prionsabal, I think.

Anya deserves a hug too, along with Soon Ye-ri. And a mug of hot chocolate. One clever choice by the author was to use similar phrases during Anya and Shui’s narration, which makes it all the more obvious how entwined their fates are. To me, Anya and Shui are two sides of the same coin. They are Isolde and Rahel, Luarna Carrack and Asirbda Luarna. In a way, they are each other's ‘true norths’ and I’m sure that whatever end the story leads to, they will face it together. The question is whether they’ll be on the same side…

The world building becomes more intricate as we learn about other Bile Raths and Witan communities, as well as factions like the Red Riders. The taxidermist was an especially fun addition. Besides current events, The Lost Prisoner talks a lot about Witan history too! The Tarathas, the Great Sleep… if you’re a sucker for lore like me, this book will not disappoint.

My only major criticism is that towards the end, things got a little chaotic. So much was happening and it wasn't always conveyed properly to the reader, resulting in me not fully appreciating events that I know are nail-biting. Another more subjective opinion of mine is that the pop-culture references were slightly (slightly) too frequent. I’m a proud nerd, but when you repeatedly quote another piece of media at key moments while simultaneously not having enough original quotes, it sort of steals the book’s moment of glory. The first book did it well, but the ratio was a little off for this one. That said, I did grin like an idiot when they quoted Dune.

All in all, The Lost Prisoner is a triumph and a must-read for low fantasy fans, especially if you’re Indian. The Hidden Children series deserves so much more recognition. I can't wait for the next book. Please, please read this so I have someone to geek out over it with.

For those who relish intricate world-building, the narrative is enriched by the extensive history and traditions of Witana, creating a more satisfying plot. Despite some chaotic scenes toward the end and occasional pop culture references, the story remains captivating, weaving the destinies of characters like Anya and Shui seamlessly.

In summary, 'The Lost Prisoner' is a remarkable achievement in the realm of low fantasy literature. It deserves accolades and is a must-read for fans of the Hidden Children series and anyone seeking a vividly crafted fantasy world filled with excellent characters and thrilling adventures."

The lost prisoner is the continuation of the hidden children: the lost grimore. In the first book shui gets tangled into the new world where she is the old player and in the climax of the book Shui gets the grimore and Anya is taken to a branch where they leach the grace of a person who has broken the rules. In this book its shown that Anya has been kidnapped and has been kept in a thin space below a lake. This book was some what fast than the previous book and also lot of action. We get to know Rumna more closely and being a guardian to Shui. Then there is a fear of red riders who are against such necromancers and leach them. Shui fighting all the odds Shui has to reach the person who has kidnapped many childrens and anya. How shui finds out who is behind these kidnapping is the story. And the story does not conclude here there is still more, would love to read the next book as well. Overall I would say a very very good Goodreads. :)
