I dream of a time where I was warm, safe, and loved.

But my waking reality is starkly different.

Anxiety plagues me and spirits haunt the shadows. No matter how fast I run, I can’t seem to escape my past.

The only solace and steady force in my life is my best friend, Finn.

And now… there’s a ghost haunting me. And I’m not certain if it wants help or if it wants to kill me. There’s only one person who can understand: Finn’s brother, Damen.

However, in reaching out, I’m betraying Finn and setting things into motion that cannot be undone.

But nobody ever said that doing the right thing was easy.

The Garden of Eternal Flowers is a re-envisioning of my Grimm Cases series. Eternal Flowers has taken my original vision of Bianca's story and transformed it into something new and beautiful. Some chapters are similar, and some dialogue is the same, as The Grimm Cases, Origins, but overall, about 75% of the book has been entirely revisioned with new plot points, mystery, and interpersonal relationships. Also, unlike Origins (originally a Wattpad release), there is now a clear beginning, climax, and conclusion in each individual novel, which allows them to be read alone or as part of the ongoing series.

I hope that you will enjoy Shadows of Nightshade as much as I enjoyed writing it. Truly, it is an honor to write about Bianca and her boys, and all of these characters are near and dear to my heart.

Trigger Warning: This series deals with the aftermath of severe childhood trauma.

The past was the past, over and done with. And if
there was one lesson I’d learned in life, it was history sucked. Cry
once, then let it wash away, ignore it, bury the feelings, and
nothing will bother you.

There was ligit no plot or meaning to this, it was pure entertainment and I was here for it.

Thank you so much to the author and booksirens for a digital arc of this book.

I never re-read. Mostly because I have way too many unread books begging me to be read and it feels like wasting my time to explore the same story twice. Unless an author does the bravest thing ever: Rebranding the entire series, rewriting the entire series and now writing the series with a slightly different feel and branding that's more fitting. I was therefore very excited that I got an arc for this first novel in the Garden of Eternal Flowers series.

This book is everything I had hoped it would be and even more. Bianca is one of my favorite main characters in the entire world. Yes, she's slightly naive and her brain works in a way that's hard to follow, but we discover why she is the way she is, even though she's never showing us everything yet, and it's so hard to fight the urge to wrap Bianca in a blanket and to hug her until all the bad memories and all the bad people are gone.

I also absolutely loved the ghost story and how intertwined it was with the mythology. The mythology of this world is quite complicated, but it's complicated in the best kind of way. The author clearly put a lot of thought in this book and series. She knows what's happening and what's going on. She knows what's waiting for the characters and what challenges they'll face. We get the information we need, but I don't doubt there's a lot yet to come.

It's the atmosphere and the vibe of the book stealing the show though. It's hard to explain what the atmosphere and vibe exactly are. The book has something soft, without it being without danger and action. The book has something warm, without there being no moments of pain and doubt and sadness. It constantly feels like this one character is finally finding her people and her place in the world and it must be the best feeling ever.

I can't wait for the next book to be ready to be released!

Lacklustre

On its own, this would be a 4/5 book. It was decent, the characters were interesting, and the premise is good.

However, it’s hard not to compare it to the original and it falls short in numerous ways.

1. Bianca has lost a LOT of her smart, funny wit. The naivety and extreme logical reactions are sort of there, but tampered down a lot.

2. Her hatred towards Bryce doesn’t have the same impact since he’s lost so much screen time.

3. Things with the guys moved so fast.

4. You’ve lost most of the build-up and suspense.

5. Finn is entirely different but also the same, and since he’s still up to the shady stuff, the way Bianca trusted him and worked with him is weird. She held a grudge for SEVEN books last time. She’s fae. That’s her MO.

6. Her money issues are briefly mentioned, but just in passing.

It’s like the first two or three books have been merged into one short book, and it’s missing so much.

I understand this is a rewrite, but it’s genuinely not good compared to the previous works.

So, since the book is a rewrite, I decided to read the first story beforehand and... I've genuinely liked it better than this revamp :( I understand that the author wants to redo the story and flesh out the writing, and that this was also a way for her to move on from her own trauma and rebrand herself, but I just felt like she cut out a lot of what makes Bianca so endearing (her crazy logical reasonings, her cutthroat but at the same time sweet personality (in here it just feels like she is cutthroat in a bitter/judgy way)) and changed a lot of the pacing of the book. I will keep on reading, but I'm a little bit sad since I'm enjoying The Grimm Cases so much and won't have a closure there :(

Also, I would like to mention that revamping a book is a extremely courageous thing to do, specially because it can be a hit or miss for the readers of the OG series... So kudos to the author for doing what she feels it's the best for her.

This is a cannot put down read, from the first chapter you will be sucked into the life of Bianca, the female lead. I really enjoyed Bianca as a character, she is funny and just so dang fun to read. She is not your typical lead. There may be some love and hate relationship here, but I promise you it will end up love.

As always Lyla does an amazing job of writing out these characters and world that just traps you. Needing to know what happens next to these characters that you grow to be invested in.

I would highly recommend reading this first book of the Garden of Eternal Flowers series.

I prefer the original

Having read the first edition to this book I prefer the original. This book has lost the spark, feels rushed and watered down. The quirks, logically thinking, grudge holding against Finn that Bianca had in the first book was amazing and made it different to other books out there. You could reread the series plenty of time and find something new or something referenced in the other books that suddenly click. I feel the remake of the series won’t have this as everything a been condensed down, the first 3 books fit into this one now. New Bianca hearing problems don’t really blend in well and aren’t very realistic, her mental health problems have also been dismissed. The worst thing is Finn, I loved the relationship she had with him, he wasn’t forgiven for quite a few books and now he has been forgiven in the first book. I am glad I brought the old books as I don’t think I will be continuing with the remake which is heartbreaking because it was an amazing series. If you haven’t read the original series you might like this one, the old characters are too stuck in my head to appreciate this book.

I received an arc of this book, but all opinions are my own.
This book was a rewrite of an original series by Oweds, despite that it was so fun to read, Bianca still is an intriguing and interesting main character. She’s funny, cunning and so misunderstood. Her reactions to normal things are hilarious and her theories are as outlandish as her mouth. A good mix of comedy, budding romance, drama, angst, and paranormal —obviously! The men are just as fun, even Finn. He’s a bit different this time around but even better. Oweds impressed me with her mythos building, so I can’t wait to see where this series takes us.

So this is a review of the reworked and rereleased version with the new name. I received an advance copy in order to be able to advance read the new version and advance review. I am going to try to be as fair as possible without revealing information that was true for the old versions of books, but will either be spoilers, or will be untrue in this version. I apologize if that makes anything confusing to new readers.

So Bianca, to me, is a very irritating type of character. She is flighty, believes she knows more than she often does, and truly thinks other people think the same way she does which leads her to assume other people are doing what she would do. Normally that means I would not enjoy a book with that type of character as a lead, where I am expected to spend a good deal of time in her head. Somehow this author has allowed me to still enjoy the books around that personality type. The world building is just superb. Things are complex and interlocked in the mythology of this world. Characters are complicated with full inner worlds that do not necessarily make sense to me, but feel internally consistent in themselves. There is a full world to explore here with strange people making strange decisions that are not fully explained yet, but feel like they come from a place of authenticity to the characters.

Bianca herself is a sympathetic character. She has a few flaws that can be irritating to experience, but those flaws feel, at least at this moment, to come from a place of anxiety. Having lived in this world, I can sympathize with her.

I feel like I am having trouble writing this without too much being pulled from the old series, which may or may not even matter anymore. So I guess for my final words I'll just say this book feels tighter than the old version. It feels well edited, with things streamlined, a bit of the story condensed in some ways. The whole book feels denser, and was a slower read for me than usual. It also feels more fleshed out, with more information in places where we can really use it so as to not be confused about what is going on. I think she accomplished what she set out to do here, which was to make a good book better. I can't wait to see what happens in the future stories, whether it is the same or different. Either way, it should be very interesting indeed.

This is a rewrite of the original book, Origins, which I did read and enjoyed. So, to say that I was curious what the author had done now is an understatement. I tread into the first pages, a little skeptical, but came out enjoying it all over again.

Bianca see ghosts, which she ignores until she agrees to housesit for her professor and is teased by a spiritual entity every night. Her best and only friend refuses to listen to her pleas for a little help, which sends her off to seek out his brother, who is supposedly into paranormal stuff. But when she arrives at the door, she's greeted by four guys, who are anything but normal, and although they might be able to help her, she's stumbled across a world that will turn everything she knows upside down.

This is a fun read, and while it does involve a freshman in college, it works fine for older YAers, too. The thing which makes this read fun is the characters. They pack tons of over-the-top personality, which borders on too much but keeps it right at the level where it's fun. Bianca, to put it mildly, is a hot mess. She's been locked out from the world around her and has the oddest way of viewing things. It's not necessarily realistic, and that's awesome. She's all over the place, but there's something endearing about it, too, which makes her addictive. The guys are a bit cliche, at times, but only at times. Each of them is a mystery for itself. Between all of them, it's a humorous back and forth in unpredictable directions.

Then, there's the dark side. The threats are deadly, and the secrets thick. Bianca is in danger and has a foggy past with uncertain players still heavily involved. The stakes are high, letting it veer into the area of horror. This thrown together with the humor above makes for an original and quirky mix...which I enjoyed completely.

There is the reverse harem romance...for all of those fans out there. But while there is tons and tons of flirting and silliness in these pages, that is not the main thrust. It's also slow burn, and considering Bianca's state, nothing else would work.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the author does next. I received a DRC and loved every page.

"Shadows of Nightshade: The Garden of Eternal Flowers: Book 1" is a mesmerizing and enchanting debut in a new series by an author whose skill with language and imagery is truly captivating. This book takes readers on a haunting journey through a world where dreams, memories, and the supernatural collide.

The protagonist's connection to the language of flowers adds a unique and evocative element to the story. The vivid descriptions and symbolic power of flowers create a rich sensory experience for readers, immersing them in a world of beauty and mystery. The dreams and visions that haunt the protagonist add depth and intrigue, blurring the lines between past and present.

The emotional journey of the main character is both relatable and poignant. From the gripping portrayal of anxiety to the longing for warmth, safety, and love, the author delves into the complexities of the human experience. The friendship between the protagonist and Finn, her best friend, provides a steady anchor amidst the uncertainties and challenges she faces.

The introduction of a ghost and the enigmatic character of Damen adds a thrilling supernatural element to the narrative. As the protagonist navigates this new realm of spirits and shadows, the stakes rise, and the tension builds. The moral dilemma she faces in seeking help and potentially betraying her friend adds layers of complexity and raises thought-provoking questions.

The writing style in "Shadows of Nightshade" is beautifully lyrical and atmospheric. The author's ability to create vivid imagery and weave together emotions and suspense is remarkable. Readers will find themselves swept away by the poetic prose and the tantalizing blend of mystery and romance.

This book lays a strong foundation for The Garden of Eternal Flowers series and leaves readers eager to discover what lies ahead. Fans of dark fantasy and supernatural romance will find "Shadows of Nightshade" a captivating and rewarding read.

I was in love with this story when I first started it. But the further I got into it, the less I began enjoying it.

Let’s go through my thoughts chronologically: Our main character, Bianca, is watching a house for a professor while they are on vacation. The longer Bianca stays in the house, however, the more sure she is that it’s haunted. Especially when the ghost begins touching her leg in the middle of the night and… doing her dishes?

Listen, I wouldn’t be complaining.

Bianca want to ask her best friend’s older brother for help, since he’s into paranormal things, but her best friend thinks that’s a bad idea.

Bianca goes anyway.

I really enjoyed the older brother, Damen, and his friend group. Titus in particular really stood out to me, as a himbo that was constantly getting physically hurt by Bianca after he accidentally scares her. The way these guys spoke to each other and how they integrated Bianca into their friend group was absolutely my favorite part of this book, and I want more of them specifically.

But I’m not sure about every other detail in this story…

While the plot and characters felt like they would fit solidly into the New Adult genre, the writing style itself felt more like a middle grade, leading to this awkward storytelling that didn’t seem to fit the story being told. While there was a lot about the world I learned in this book, there were also a lot of details that were just passed by or not explained, leaving me confused.

While I think some of these details were intentionally left out by the author to be explored in later parts of this series, there were definitely some I thought could be expanded upon a little more in this first book. For example, near the end of the book, Bianca confronts the ghost haunting the house. However, even after finishing the book, I still have no idea how she got there or why she was accompanied by a character I assumed was a villain throughout the story! The entire scene was confusing, and I’m not 100% sure what happened.

There is a promise for more of these details to be revealed throughout the rest of this series, but I’m not sure if I want to stick with this and see those details come to light. While I really enjoyed the characters in this book and their relationships, the conflict and supernatural details were lacking, leaving me to feel unsure on my feelings for this story.

As some may know, this is the first book in a series the author previously published under the series title, The Grimm Cases. Honestly I loved the original series and was actually a bit sad that it was being pulled and rewritten. (Please note, the series can still be purchased in paperback form if you’d like to read it.) However, after reading the first book, I can admit that it is overall a better piece of work. The detail and plot in the original series was amazing but also a little confusing at times. There’s a lot going on and if you are not already familiar with some aspects of Chinese based lore/religion/beliefs/etc etc, it was a bit overwhelming. These aspects are still present and the characters are still similar but overall, the book is better written and edited. Bianca is the main character and she can be hard to relate to sometimes. I don’t think this detracts from the book as it’s only the first one. The men also have attributes that are not desirable but I think that’s what makes it better. The characters will (hopefully) grow and learn through the series. I am excited to see where the next book takes us. Overall, the story is interesting and the characters seem real even while being flawed. The main plot/storyline is so interesting. I don’t want to spoil anything so am being intentionally vague but it’s been a while since I’ve read something similar!

I understand that this is a rewrite of the original series. I have not read the original, which I am quite happy about since it means I came to this version without any preconcieved ideas and was therefore not in the position of being either pleased or disappointed when comparing it with the original.

I have to say I found Bianca to be rather annoying. At times she seems indecisive and flighty, although since she has apparently had severe trauma in her past, which probably accounts for it. At other times though, she shows an inner strength and sensitivity which kept me reading and rooting for her. I enjoyed the world building and the other characters are complex and intriguing.

Despite being somewhat irritated by Bianca, this book still kept me turning the pages, there were so many questions I wanted to be answered, and the story is fast paced and intriguing. However, I can only give four stars rather than five, since it came to - what to me at least - seemed to be quite an abrubt end. I fully expected there to be another two or three chapters and while I know it is the first of a series, I had expected it to be more of a 'complete' story. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend this book as an interesting and enjoyable read, and it left me wanting to read the next book in the series.

Shadows of Nightshade by Lyla Oweds is a compelling blend of fantasy, romance, and mystery that kept me turning the pages late into the night. Lyla weaves a rich and atmospheric world filled with secrets, danger, and a slow-burning intensity that lingers long after the final chapter.

The protagonist, Bianca, is complex and relatable, navigating a world that feels both magical and threatening. The romantic tension is palpable without being overdone, and the dynamic between the characters adds emotional depth. The plot unfolds like a puzzle, and while there are moments where the writing needs some improving, the intrigue more than makes up for it.

What stood out most was the author's writing style—it’s immersive, poetic at times, and adds to the haunting tone of the story. I would’ve loved a bit more clarity in certain plot threads, but overall, it’s a strong start that has me eager to dive into the next book.

Highly recommended for fans of dark academia, gothic romance, paranormal mystery, and slow-burn fantasy.

I received this book in return for an honest review, and will be buying the book soon.

I love the characters and the relationships happening here. This has a lot of twists, secrets, and intrigue - possibly too much intrigue. The author is so vague overall that I would love to know more, and the tone is great, but it’s possibly too complicated and open-ended to dedicate myself to reading the next book.

Our main girl is strong, and smart, and absolutely traumatized in every aspect of life. She’s been manipulated her entire life and she’s just discovering there’s an entire world outside her own. This is huge, and at the same time somewhat casually glossed over in the whole book. There is no moment where she has clear understanding- of literally anything, and then as the reader, neither did I. Plot seems good, if again a little over complicated for an intro to the world. I’m curious, I’m interested, but overall frustrated.

Not gonna lie..

I really liked the way the old story was done. The detail, the thoughts, the complexity. It was so much more and it made the tale epic. I also love the book series name the Grimm cases. I'm really going to miss the old series.

Bianca still keeps some of her previous personality. Things moved really fast compared to before. A lot has changed. Conversations ran differently. Info was thrown out quicker but without nearly as much detail n complexity as the previous story. The whole ghost plot was almost totally revamped. I was left feeling weird about that since I liked the way it went previously better.

It was, overall, jarring to be essentially restarting this series with 70% of the story changed. I preferred the other story but I do love Bianca n her quintet so I will happily read on.

Hooked from start to finish

Lyla Oweds has managed to hook me with this rewriting of her series The Grimm Cases. I'm loving Bianca's character, she's an awesome mix of contradictions and so lovely at the same time. It was a pleasure starting to get to know Bianca and learning about who she is, what she's capable of and seeing her slowing begin blossom into her true self. Having to wait for book two is the second hardest thing for me.....after reaching the end of this one!!

I'm so happy I was given the opportunity to review this and I can't wait to get my mitts on the next book in the series! So many things are still to come to light for Bianca and for her new friends. Intriguing and gripping from the first page, love it!

I really wanted to like this book, and I tried. I like the idea. I just feel like its missing so much. There isn't really and depth to the plot and the characters are one dimensional. I couldn't stand to be in Bianca's head any longer. I understand that she can see ghosts and was sheltered her whole life but she acts and thinks like a 4th grader. There was zero chemistry between any of the characters, romantic or platonic.

I almost want to hunt down the original version of this story and see what that one was all about.

Overall, it just seemed very childish from the writing style to the way the characters themselves acted.

prefer the original

This was a pretty good read. I know she rewrote the series but I really prefer the original over this book. There just more to the character abs interactions in the original. This one seems to follow the same line just a lot seems to be cut and there are a few diff scenes. I’ll deff follow the author and read the others, I was very disappointed she decided to redo the entire series after 8 books instead of just editing it. And don’t get me wrong this was a good read but after reading the original series this isn’t my favorite. But it’s still a good read.

This book was very fast-paced and engaging, and it held my attention. But the overall pacing did feel a bit odd. Some things seemed to happen too fast, some things seemed to come out of nowhere, and other things didn't seem to be really explained. It's the first book, so I understand we won't know everything, but it really felt like the conflict with Finn could have been a lot more fleshed out.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and really liked the FMC, Bianca. I wish this was MPOV, but I also understand that the mystery won't mystery as well if we're reading Damen's POV, or Finn's, etc.

Shadows of Nightshade is a rewrite, same wonderful characters and same story but with different twists and turns. Bianca has a strength that everybody but her sees. Or maybe everyone does see and is intimidated by her strength... Hmmmmmmm
Her only friend Finn has some es-splaining to do!!!! But it's her new friends that capture our attention, with their unusual relationships and choice of hobby (yeah, we will go with hobby).
This gaggle of mystery solvers are the best, I love this Scooby Gang and can't wait to see how this story progresses.

Despite this book being a rewrite it felt like I was reading this book for the first time.
The way Lyla wrote the characters was amazing. I love the new additions to the book. Some of them were small but they made a huge difference in the characters.

Finn was written so well and in a way that made us readers able to understand and empathize with him more and early on in the series. There are a lot less Finn haters with this rewrite. Can’t wait to read his character development.

Excited to see how the series progresses!!!

This was a fun read! The plot and the story reminded me of the many animes and mangas that my son reads and watches. It had that carefree-type mood you would find in these types of stories. If you like manga/animes then this is the book for you. I think this would be a good read for young adult readers 15+.

The author kindly did a guest blog on how she developed the characters. If you're interested to learn more visit my blog: https://www.kimsbookreviewsandwriting...

So, this book me a lot of time to read it since I had a lot of work, but I love it! This is first paranormal book I read. It's easy to to understand what's happening, the characters are described amazing which helps me to imagine the story better. Also, the way all characters are different made me fall in love with book even more! The only thing I don't like about the book is that the story is rushed(that's just a subjective opinion 😅), but all in all, the book is amazing! I can't wait to see what happens next.

So apparently this is a rewritten story of this author’s Grimm Cases series the first book but I didn’t read the original so this is a new story for me. This is a strange one for me because I was really intrigued by the world and the supernaturals and the story was really what kept me reading as it was good. My issue was the main female character she was written as really naive and a little irritating if I’m really honest. I would have gone with a 2.5⭐️ rating if I could have.

Finding what should have been

Bianca has dealt with a lot of trauma and sheltering. She is extremely introverted, anxious, and codependent on her best friend Finn.

However, a series of events quickly changes all of her perspectives about her life, her friendship with Finn and all sorts of things she should have always known about.

This book was full of all kinds of twists, trauma, and drama. There are still so many mysteries to unravel. I absolutely can't wait to read book two.

I love the OG series of this book so I was unsure regarding the re write of it but GOD I LOVE THIS BOOK!
If yout new to the series, you will love it!
Multiple pov, why choose, paranormal, slow burner.
.
.
.
If like me you've read, read this new one!
Still same characters but like whole new falling in love with them
FM is still shy but she is more bold, always asking questions, still slow burn but quicker then OG.
Finn is definitely in a different light in this book, so interesting to see where it will go with him in this book. Less lieing/holding back in this story, new scenes and slightly different lead the book is going.
.
.
Still kept some of the OG work *baby girl* my problem and so on!
Highly recommended!

A huge thank you to the super sweet author Lyla for the ARC!

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. It was such a fun and quick read. The pacing of the story was done well and I found myself laughing out loud at some of the similar train of thoughts that Bianca had. I didn't take some of her overly dramatics too seriously. It came across to me as sort of tongue-in-cheek. Overall, Bianca's voice is authentic and straightforward. Her flaws made her more endearing and real.

This book made zero sense. The plot was all over the place and I still have no idea what I read. I skimmed the last 25% of the book just to see if there was some big twist that would make this book make sense but there wasnt one. I don't understand why there was a trigger warning about abuse because there was zero mention of her past or if anything happened to her. The fmc was annoying and had very disjointed thought and speech. Definitely in the top 5 worst books I've read this year.

In this we meet Bianca, who suffers from anxiety and has a ghost problem. It’s an intriguing story with a few twists and turns to keep you guessing as she tries to figure out whether the ghost is friend or foe. She requests help from her best friends brother to get to the bottom of this and with a few twists and turns thrown in, this did hold onto my attention !
