Lord of Devil Isle
3.5 Stars

Known as the “Lord of Devil Isle”, Nicholas Scott is a skilled ship’s captain and a notorious womanizer. So when he pulls Eve Upshall from the waves, he naturally assumes she will be his latest conquest. Eve, however, has other ideas on the matter …

A sweet and steamy read although it did lose some momentum at the end.

Eve and Nick have incredible chemistry and their banter is a highlight of the book. Eve certainly knows how to handle herself both verbally and physically. Thankfully there are no ridiculous misunderstandings or silly secrets, and the obstacles to their relationship come in the form of their own mutual stubbornness.

The resolution is where the weakness lies as if the authors had difficulty wrapping the story up. The inclusion of the comes out of nowhere and there is little to no build up to the . The enmity between Adam and Nick also lacks closure and an epilogue in which Nick’s fears of are laid to rest would also wrap things up nicely.

Nevertheless, Lord of Devil Isle is an entertaining read, but the book is probably not for those readers who prefer historical detail and accuracy in their historical romance. I will certainly be reading more from these authors in the future.

I would have given this book 4 1/2 stars if possible. The only problem I had with it is,some of the writing and/or dialogue seemed a little too modern at times.
I love a heroine who is tough and a survivor but yet still feminine. Eve was hilarious at times (swore like a sailor and could get "physical") and she had an attraction to Nick without falling immediately in love with him. Nick was likeable as a hero as well, sometimes you wanted to shake him, but that's par for the course.
I have to say, this book had the best marriage proposal!! I won't say anymore to ruin it for you, but I loved it:D

The book started out really promising. Nicolas is delicious. But the book has one major failing: poor plots. The story jumps around and has very little substance. Most of the time I didn't know where the story was going. Irrelevant bits and pieces put together, there, you have this book.

I actually liked Nicolas and Eve together, but they were not blessed with a strong story so their characters suffered. Eve's waiting for Nicolas to propose also got on my nerves. Guy won't marry you and you won't be his mistress so walk away already. Either stay without false hopes or go, staying out and hoping desperately for a marriage proposal is pathetic. I didn't appreciate that.

Thoroughly enjoyable read. The hero and heroine were believable, meaning they had faults as well as strong and admirable traits. Worth the time, in my opinion. And, as always, a happy, tension-filled, ending.

Overall: This was a wonderful and thrilling adventure. I really loved Eve's character right from the beginning because she was strong and didn't seem like the whiny. Nick's character, i just didn't care from until start until end. He was just rude , crude and uncaring. It wasn't until the end of the book for me to really get and like his character. The only part that really bothered me was the ending. Wtf ; I felt like things were just cut off. I really wanted to see Rathburn get a better beating at the end, I kind of felt that he got off too easy. Than Miss Munroe just got married and we never heard anything about her again. So for myself, i just wish there was so more details to the story to really make it complete.

Characters: Nick & Eve

Page Turner: Yes!!

Series Cont: I wish!!

Recommend: YES!!

I can't recall the last time I read a historical romance. This was a nice return to that genre. The story read quickly and kept me interested from the first page. The heroine wasn't annoying and the hero wasn't too much of a jerk. There was no great conflict but the book is a good one. If you're looking for a nice historical that is a mindless read then this is the one for you. :)

THIS STARTED OFF LIKE ANY AVERAGE PIRATE/PRIVATEER STORY BUT IT HAD THE ELEMENTS OF A GOOD ROMANCE - AN ISLAND SETTING, A COCKY HERO, PASSIONATE SEX AND MILD ANGST.

NICHOLAS is the Lord of Devil Isle, he's basically the man who runs the island where he smuggles and deals with shipments to ensure there's a steady flow of food supply, necessities etc. The story opens up with him fucking his mistress - yes, he's a man with a steady appetite and you'll find he fits the manwhore attitude - cocksure, a little arrogant and never wanting to fall in love again. In his case, Nicholas was married once until his wife cuckolded him with another man, probably feeling lonely when he's always out at sea and she died giving birth to someone else's son. Nicholas has his own set of issues, but his wife's betrayal made him close off his heart and he doesn't want to be that vulnerable again. One night, his first mate interrupts his fucking session to inform him that they've encountered a particular ship that he's been on the lookout for, only to return with three drowning ladies instead. Taking them back to his island, Nicholas works to get Eve to become his new mistress, and I will say I didn't quite like how he jumped from woman to woman so quickly. I'm only glad Eve gave him a run for money when she refuses his advances, and even when she succumbs, she still has her dignity and won't become anything less than his wife.

EVE is a wrongly accused young woman who endured a traumatic time when she was sent to prison for public lewdness. For that, she has been thoroughly whipped on the back and there are just some things an innocent woman shouldn't have to experience. While the scars on her back are fresh, the ones in her heart isn't. I found that part of her story intriguing, adding a layer of vulnerability and humanity to her rather stiff and rigid attitude. I guess she's just protecting herself from being hurt and trusting the wrong people. On the way to marry their husbands in the Colonies, their ship somehow caught fire and she ended up in the water with two other females. Thankfully they were rescued, but Eve isn't sure being rescued by a promiscuous captain is a blessing or punishment. The only thing I didn't quite buy about Eve is how quickly she fell for Nicholas without knowing him very well. He was merely often plying her with doses of sexual innuendos and of course seduction, and how easily she fell in love. That part stank a little.

OVERALL it was a rather engaging story and the best part is how even after experiencing passion and sex, Eve dragged on the angst by withholding from Nicholas what he wants - I do so love the pain that they both feel from not being able to have what they want. In another light, this story isn't something new to HR readers. It's quite a common troupe, but nevertheless it was interesting and fun to read.

I’m old skool bodice ripper lover.
This book doesn’t have the old feels.
I lost interest.
Also the H just dismisses his mistress like dirt after meeting the h. I mean I liked that he dismissed the mistress, but it puts a doubt in our mind that someday he might dismiss the h if sees someone more beautiful.

Eine nette Lektüre, aber leider auch nicht mehr als das. Dazu war die Geschichte um Eve und Nicholas dann doch ein wenig zu oberflächlich bei den Emotionen und zu sehr sprunghaft, was den Plot angeht.

When Captain Nicholas Scott takes his ship out to capture a wreck off Bermuda's coast he doesn't expect to pull in three lovely ladies instead of a ship full of goods, but while he doesn't trust women, he has no intention of letting them be shark bait on his watch. Two of the women are suitably grateful. Eve Upshaw on the other hand, immediately takes issue with the manner of her rescue and demands to be taken to North Carolina. She and other women have betrotheds there. The sparks she and Nicholas set up could burn even water and the crew watches from afar as Eve takes on the legendary captain. Eve is not prepared for the heat between them but regardless, she will be no man's plaything and she is determined to give the lord of Devil Isle a run for his money. It's a decent story, a little slow in the middle, and both Eve and Nicholas are damaged enough that they must both do some growing if they are going to build a life together. Some of the secondary characters are well drawn as well. It's an old book so I wouldn't rush to find it, but Eve definitely gave as good as she got.

3 1/2 stars.
A fantastic romantic sensual and fully entertaining read!
While I greatly enjoyed this book I found some things promlematic. My one problem with the story was Eve's falling in love with Nick. It wasn't believible becuase at the time there was no romantic development between them what so ever to base the realization on. There was one instant of closeness between them other than sexual and that's not enough to warrant love. Even brickering with each other doesn't cut straight to love, which they often do even if its entertaining-- it doesn't warrant love. My second problem was with how quickly I felt the book ended. Happy and complete yes, but I couldn't help wanting a little something more in the end than what I got. I felt hte ending could've been a little bit more tied together and drawn out, like what happenes other than revealing their love?
However, my problems end there.
They meant in a perfect way that sets up the story as well as the bennings of their realtionship and personalities. From the beinning I knew there were good things to come. The way Eve realizes her love is very touching in that instant as well as the growth that developes in their relationship after that moment. It's then that their relationship becomes love which is emotional and romantic as well as sensual. I enjoyed reading that development as both grow to realize their emotions, count on each other and grow closer. Their relationship is beautiful and together they balance each other out.
One other thing i completely enjoyed was the pace of the book. While it started off perfectly by getting straight to the point. I like this becuase long winded beginnings doesnt make for a good story, it takes to much time to get to the point the reader gets bored.
I will not call the book perfect. It is however, completely and utterly enjoyable for a quick read. I do think it could've been longer to develope the beginning of the relationship more before Eve's claim of love. The story was good enough to have held up a longer story to accomplish that without growing tiresome.
I have a weakness for settings like the ones in this particular books like ships and islands. It makes for something different than the everyday historical romance but it takes skill to make such settings intersting as well as entertaining. Connie Mason accomplishes that with great skill for this book which I fully appreciate.

In an attempt to clear a few books out of my TBR pile before the New Year rolls around I decided to give this one a try. Oh, guys, it was another fun one. There's nothing life changing about it, but it let me drift for a bit on the high seas and imagine that all those seafaring men (just be glad that I resisted the urge to write "seamen" there!) are actually good looking and have all their teeth with nary a raging case of scurvy to be found.

First things first, now. I have a bit of an issue with the synopsis. Nick doesn't try to get Eve to choose a husband from his crew. He takes both her and the two other ladies he saves into his ow home and attempts to find them husbands amongst the eligible men of the island. More to the point, he repeatedly tries to get Eve into his bed and make her his mistress. I'd say that's a far cry from commanding her to choose a husband from among his crew. I'm just saying.

Other than that slightly misleading line (which really doesn't bother me, it's just incorrect), the book was interesting and fun. Both Eve and Nice have pasts they have to deal with before they can love one another. I really liked how accepting Nick was of Eve's injuries. I liked that Eve wasn't the perfect lady and could swear a sailor under the table. I liked the bit of depth that Nick and Adam's feud brought to the storyline.

Overall, it was very enjoyable. I have to admit that if I read enough of these books I'm going to start believing that most seamen (ha!) had good hygiene, ripped bodies and all their teeth. What? A girl can dream, cant she?

I really enjoyed this one! In fact, I sneaked my Nook to my desk and secretly finished this in one day. It was great. The tension between Adam & Nick was a great addition to the other stress in Nick's life, and yet you end up feeling bad for both men. I also loved how from the beginning Nick rearranged his life for Eve without realizing that he's doing it for more than just one night. His confusion over his feelings for her is actually believable instead of that contrived "will they, won't they" plot a lot of authors rely on. And Eve was such a great heroine. Earthy yet straining to be the lady she should have been, real, and flawed. That was probably my favorite part of the entire book. Both of the characters are flawed. Nick is gorgeous, but he's not the best fighter, he's not the most masterful manipulator, and he gets too worked up when he's with Eve so that he almost loses control with her. Eve is beautiful but she cusses like a sailor, she's too wrapped up in what others think of her (but it is believable given her past), and she has a bad habit of teasing Nick without thinking about his feelings.

I really enjoyed seeing these characters grow through a natural process. There was no "aha" moment when they suddenly changed. It was a gradual change from the moment they met, and the only "aha" moment was at the end when they realized how far they've come together. And the secondary characters are very entertaining.

A quick warning: this is not your mother's historical novel. The language is crude and dirty at times so don't expect flowery words in the heat of the moment. I loved it!!

I kind of loved Lord of Devil Isle!! It's set in Bermuda, where Captain Nick and his crew make berth. He's not a pirate, but he's certainly not a gentlemen either. He is, however, a good man of honor and makes his living honestly as he follows the law of the sea. During one storm, he has sights on claiming a ship that's caught on the reef, but when he spots three women in the water he stops to help them instead. Sure Nick misses out on a lot of goods, but he finds something even better: a foul-mouthed woman to call his own!

When a man wrestles a shark in the opening chapters of a book, I know it's going to be a winner! Lord of Devil Isle! was channeling Sharknado! Minus the chainsaw. It was just so absurd, but I loved it! And it set the tone for an exciting and humorous romance. Nick is immediately intrigued by Eve, since of course, women aren't know to swear, let alone sound worse than his crew! But Eve isn't exactly swept off her feet by the handsome Captain, since he goes about romance all wrong. He knows how to please a woman, but he's hesitant to get his heart involved. And Eve is not happy to be claimed as his mistress, which Nick thinks is an amazing offer. Men. *scoff*

There really isn't a lot I want to say about Lord of Devil Isle!. I just really enjoyed it. I loved the characters and the setting! It had the type of humor that I actually get, so I did laugh out loud a few times. There's some pretty good sexy times thrown in as well. It was just a feel good read and kept me entertained from beginning to end.

Eve Upshall is not your usual heroine since she is a convicted criminal, albeit an innocent one and Nicholas Scott, although he’s known in Bermuda as Lord Nick, is not the usual aristocratic hero. When Captain Nicholas Scott arrives on the scene of a shipwreck, hoping to salvage the valuable cargo, he is sidetracked by three women in the water, at risk of drowning and shark attack. He rescues the women, Eve Upshall, and her companions Penny and Sally, losing the ship to a rival captain. The three women had been given a reprieve from transportation by a retired military officer who had promised they would be married to rich planters in Charlotte, South Carolina, although Captain Scott has his doubts as to the truth of the officer’s story. Nick offers them the protection of his home and since decent women are in short supply on the island, offers to help them find husbands there instead of continuing with their plan to travel to Charlotte. As the story progresses, more is revealed about Eve’s painful past as well as Nick’s disastrous marriage and the death of his wife in childbirth. I enjoyed Nick and Eve’s courtship and what they went through on the way to happiness, as well as the secondary romance between Nick’s first mate Higgs and his lady. The island setting at the time just before the Revolutionary War added some interest and excitement to the tale. Although slightly predictable, it was a nice romance with interesting characters that was worth reading.

I really enjoyed the different setting of this book, Bermuda right before the Revolutionary War. The characters were much freer physically than their English counterparts, yet still carry that strict mindset that they constantly battle with. Nick was a sexy beast, a captain of trade, both legal & a little less so, a genuine hero & a well respected rogue with a good heart & a great body. He fought hard to keep his heart from falling for Eve, but as we romance readers know, it's typically a losing battle. Both Eve and Nick were well developed and I found myself really rooting for them. I thought some of Nick's actions were a bit immature (ignoring Eve when he doesn't get his way), but I was proud of Eve for recognizing her feelings for what they were and not settling for less than what she deserved. The sex scenes were super hot, take care to bring a nice cool drink when you start this one! The drama/action was a bit late in coming & I would've liked more of that in the plot, which pretty much just followed the relationship between the couple as well as those of the other women Nick rescues & takes in.

Not a groundbreaking novel, but it did feature a great & unique setting & characters who were enjoyable. Perfect summer beach read.

But how could she deny her heart? She loved him, blast the man!
Maybe a knee to the groin wasn’t the best way to show it, but how else could she have gotten his attention?

Well that is one way to get a man’s attention. But Eve has lots of other ways.

She first gets Captain Nicholas Scott’s attention when he fishes her and her two friends out of shark infested waters after they jump off a ship headed to the Carolinas. Instead of the colonies, the three women end up as Captain Scott’s guest on Devil Isle. And they are all in for a devil of a time.

This is a fun, action packed, witty read. I highly recommend Lord Of Devil Isle.

I found this to be an interesting story. I loved the atmosphere of Bermuda and on the sea. Eve had a secret and horrible past, yet she seemed so innocent. Nick was generous and kind with his crew and friends, and he saw only the good in Eve once he got past her prickly side. I also enjoyed the secondary characters supporting both Eve and Nick. It was fun.

The narration by Marian Hussey was well done. Her range of voices was very entertaining, and I enjoyed her emotional range.

This is my unsolicited review.

This novel is placed in an interesting time and location. The plot takes off quickly from the beginning but is more focused on the protagonists and their relationship than other plot elements. Too much action in the bedroom and not enough action out of the bedroom. The plot is also fairly predictable.

Pirate romance that was well- written. Damsel in distressed, rescued by the scoundrel of a pirate who is denying his love for the lass. The book had romance, action, and adventure. The supporting characters were also well written. The female lead was strong, witty, and not tongue-tied. The male lead was alpha but not overpowering. It was a satisfying read.
