Life's not fair, so build a bridge and get over it!
A giant seagull in a seaside town dislikes cats and embarks on a killing spree. Using instinct and improving skills, it begins destroying the cat population. Naturally, the cats don't feel very good about it.
Although pressure mounts from the media and the public to catch the killer, the underfunded public servants aren't too interested, especially in a recession and with the uncertainty of Brexit looming, but everyone must make sacrifices. Except for the usual elites.
Constables Franklin and Wilkin stumble on evidence via social media while endeavouring to catch the culprit. Unfortunately, though employing deductive reasoning and battling sexism and bullying, they get it wrong, making a teenager take the fall, adding to the boy's already severe struggles against growing pains, among other problems.
Meanwhile, a beautiful and brilliant Abyssinian cat called Joseph inadvertently chances upon the truth and plans to restore natural law (cats as predators, birds as victims) and bring justice.
Mrs Crick feels the effects of nature's cruelty as the murdering bird and his family live on her roof. Although she loves wildlife, especially the sparrows that play in her garden, it can shock and scare her sometimes, although she has suffered worse in the past.
Nature is cruel, but the British civil service is crueller, where corruption and stupidity are rife. Most species try to protect their families but only sometimes. Life is hard, and DNA adapts slowly to cope with environmental changes. However, some creatures adapt more quickly than others, and in modern Britain's case, evolution works in reverse.
A dark social satire (depending on your point of view), telling a tale of nature, family and politics.
Great read from the start. Once I was over the prologue and asking myself 'what's this about?' I was hooked into a story that meanders along from a ruthless airborne cat snatcher, police reluctance to get involved in cat deaths and a chap arrested for waiting outside a pub. Couldnt help wonder what's next..
