Rente hin oder her.

This series is just the best! Every time I think I know what’s going to happen something just comes along and totally changes what I’ve been thinking. Can’t wait to read the next one! You can read the rest of my review on my blog: https://reviewswithsprinkles.com/2020...
A must for fans of 'The Book with No Name'. It's written in the same style, has as much action (or violence, whichever way you want to look at it) and is as funny and fun as the first. It has some returning characters, Dante and Kacy, Peto the Monk, Sanchez and Jessica. And of course the Bourbon Kid. There are werewolves, vampire gangs, vampire cops and a new (or very old) Dark Lord.
It lets you in on some back stories of some of the characters from the first book, as well as some of the characters from this book giving things a little more perspective. And if you loved the characters from the last book, people like Elvis, or Rodeo Rex then you'll love some of the new ones. They are all just as unique. There are moments in the book when you won't want to put it down because you have to know things turn out OK. And there are moments of pure hilarity, one of my favourites involving 2 members of opposing gangs, a bathroom and a smile. I loved every crazy second of it.
The ending will have you drooling for more! I only hope Mr. Anonymous is busy with a third because I'll eat it up. They are just so easy to read and so much fun.
But if you haven't read 'The Book with No Name' don't read this first, you will be lost in parts.
Excellent. I agree with most of the other reviewers here - it's a superior book to the first in almost every way... the violence is better, the characters more defined and the humour spot on. Characters who bugged me in the first book have developed and have grown on me.
Great opening chapter - good to see Elvis again!
If you've read the first book and rated it 3 stars plus, you may as well read this - it's a star better than The Book With No Name.
The Eye of the Moon by Anonymous is the follow up to The Book with No Name, presumably written by the same author. I read the first novel a couple of years ago and thought it was a fun, easy read that contained some entertaining elements. Based on that, I decided to give the sequel a try.
The story is once again set in the fictional sleazy American border town of Santa Mondega and follows various low lives as they try to get their hands on a magical crystal, the mysteriously monickered The Eye of the Moon. This gem has many powers and will grant the wearer a raft of supernatural abilities.
There is a near endless list of characters who want the stone for their own nefarious schemes. In the mix we have vampires, werewolves, ancient Egyptian mummies, monks, bikers, bartenders, serial rapists, mental patients and the worlds most successful murderer – The Bourbon Kid.
This is my main problem with the novel. There was such an enormous cast of characters that I felt the overall story suffered. With such a large dramatis personae, I had difficulty determining who I should be routing for. I wanted a standout character I could cheer on. In the first novel, though he is a distinct anti-hero, the Bourbon Kid held my attention and was fun to read, but apart from the prologue, I had to wait nearly 200 pages before he returned in this novel. Disappointingly, the vast majority of characters are given very little time to shine. It seemed as though there were new characters appearing every chapter. For reference, there are sixty-eight chapters so you can imagine how many people are involved.
My impression was that the author was attempting the impossible task of trying to please all of the people, all of the time. Cramming eight hundred pages worth of action into four hundred makes things feel overly busy. The action was fight after fight but occasionally there would be a glimpse of something great, which I desperately wished had been built on, as a break from repetition.
Personally I feel the book would have worked better with either less characters or being significantly longer.
In fairness, the novel was not a total loss. There were some redeeming qualities. The prologue explores the origins of The Bourbon Kid and gives valuable insight into why he is the way he is. There are also a couple of darkly comic situations that made me smile and some throw away lines that are pretty funny.
Overall I find myself pretty apathetic about the experience. When I choose to read a novel it tends to be because it has sparked my interest in some way. The Eye of the Moon felt like a repeat of The Book with No Name rather than a sequel.
I didn’t hate the novel, but when I got to the final page and found the suggestion that there may be another sequel on the horizon, I realised that I didn’t really want to read anymore.
So here were are again, in Santa Mondega! We meet Elvis, Sanchez, the Mystic Lady, Dante & Kacy, the Bourbon Kid, obviously, and other characters again. This books picks up where The Book With No Name ended. I was eager to get to know whether my questions which TBWNN left me with would be answered. And, damn, it did answer all of them! Mainly the one why tBK drink bourbon and why he is so violent, psycho and so on. A page turner, you can't put it down! Which is awesome! Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger, which makes you read on. This would make a brilliant movie or a comic book, just as the other parts of the quadrilogy. Again, it is about The Eye of the Moon. And people wanting it. I was entertained to read about vampires in drag, vampire clowns and so on! Damn good idea!
All in all, even a better ride than TBWNN, again, attention is to be paid to timelines and characters.
I'd say this books is for certain group of readers. So if you don't like bloodsheds, shotguns in the ass and bourbon, nothing for you =P
Otherwise, a MUST for the ones who read The Book With No Name!
even more gore, even more blood, even more weird creatures, even more twisted characters, even more fun and sarcasm... it's simply amazing and funny and i dare to say that i nearly liked it better than the first one. you also get to read a chapter or two on the bourbon kid's teenage years and why he turned out the way he is. i really liked that because it was very interesting and made me love his character even more than in the first book. in the first book i wouldn't really mind if he died but in the second i was really upset and sad when it seemed like he died. you also got some old characters from the first book - the few that didn't die, like dante, kacy, peto (in disguise) and sanchez but the rest are all new and interesting characters. some weird, some bad and some really funny like fritz - gotta love that guy :D and what i like most is that the author took the over-used vampire-genre and still managed to create something new and original and innovative.

Me encantó!
¿No conoces a Kid?
Pheeew.. Udah lumayan lama juga saya baca buku pertamanya The Book With No Name..
The Eye of The Moon.
The Eye of The Moon.
Matanya, The Eye of The Moon.
Kesimpulan saya, sequel The Book With No Name ini jauh lebih seru dari buku pertamanya.
Hehehe.
The Eye of the Moon is the sequel to The Book With No Name, which I've read a couple of years ago. Ever since, I was completely unaware of this second book (I had no clue it would be turned into a series) until I was adding my books here on BookLikes. I then just walked in to the second and third book of the Bourbon Kid series.
I decided to just start reading The Eye of the Moon, even though I didn't really recall a lot about the first book (except the obvious genre-mash up and the violence of course; hard to forget those). Things start about a year later, and once again it almost Halloween (You should stay away from Santa Mondega around Halloween, and if you've got a choice, perhaps you'd better stay away all year). The place is crowded with vampires, werewolves, the FBI and the occasional mummy (just to spice things up a bit). Oh, and there is a mass killer only known as The Bourbon Kid, and very few people ever met him and got the chance to tell about it.
This book is by far one of the weirdest books I've ever read. It's a complete mash up of many genres. It's hard (if not impossible) to put a genre on it. It's less Western as the first one though, and the focus seems to be more on the serial killer, paranormal, Da-Vinci-Code-like object hunt, with a side order of Secret services, personal drama and humour, all drenched in a sauce of violence (a lot of violence). The author - who's identity, according to Wikipedia and a quick Google search, still is a mystery - even tries to put in some character development in this book. However, this isn't the strength of this book.
One of the main reasons, there are so many characters! The POV switches between almost any living and undead inhabitant of Santa Mondega, that it is a bit hard to keep track on everyone. All the different plot lines are in the end linked in a logical way (as far as logic goes in this novel), and since only a few people live to see the end, it gets easier.
This book is an absurd mix, but enjoyable nevertheless. I think you really should be in the mood, as it's very violent, fast and absurd. It's not something I want to read all the time. But every once in a while, it's nice to have a little change, and this book was perfect for that purpose. Besides, there really were passages that I quite liked, because they were funny or witty (though not all of it was the kind of humour I like). Now, I can continue in a completely different kind of book; Crippen by John Boyne. The Third book in this series (The Devil's Graveyard), will definitely be read somewhere in the next months.
Based on the book I'd like to make some assumptions on the author. I'd say male, American, quite young.
7.5 out of 10 Genre: Horror/Supernatural, Modern-day Western, Black Comedy Feels like: Terentino on drugs Fav. Characters: Peto, Dante, Sanchez Least fav. character: Jessica
Following the massive blood-bath of the first book, the story picks up one year after the events of book one. We find out more about the Bourbon Kid's past and how he became what he is, while in the city of Santa Mondega, a new Dark Lord is on the rise. Some familiar faces are back in town, like Dante and Kacy, who came back to Santa Mondega for a vacation (yes, seriously), or Sanchez, the cowardly bartender with a passion for pissing in bottles. Peto, the last surviving Hubal monk, is also back and has his own reasons for finding the Kid.
The second book is grittier, bloodier and more fast-paced than the first book, and the humor is certainly a stronger aspect, as the events get more and more absurd. It's a lot of fun to read if you don't think too closely about what's happening, but it's missing the intriguing plot from the first one. This seems more like one huge absurd rollercoaster ride, while the first book had an actual crime feel to it that I really miss. Also, some things were just a tad bit to... weird. The 'love' story with Beth... what was that? Seriously, you guys met like once, eighteen years ago, and you're still in love with each other? And the night that she was almost raped by a vampire and then killed by a satanic cult before killing her own stepmother was the best night of Beth's life, just because she spent one hour with a guy whom she had a crush on?
Ah well, but apart from that, the book was a blast and I can't wait to dive into the next one.
Well, Mr Anonymous has done it again! This fantastic follow-up to the The Book With No Name sees The Bourbon Kid make a triumphant return to form in this bloody, violent, brutal, and hilarious dark comedy. I was hoping for more of the same and this book duly delivered!
I absolutely love the Bourbon Kid series. Whilst I didn't find the Eye of the Moon as gory and exciting as the Book with No Name it is certainly worth the read. The sequel begins with giving us a back story to the Bourbon Kid, which is just as gruesome (and slightly heartbreaking) as the present story. We are then thrown in to the battle for the Eye of the Moon, with the surviving characters from the first book joining us along the way.
I found and bought this in a used bookstore in Japan. I found out it was the 2nd book in a series, so I wanted to read the 1st book first, obviously. So I bought the book online and paid a hefty shipping price for it to get to Japan, as I only read print books. Ebooks are the devil. I was worried my money would be wasted but it was very much worth it when I finished the 1st book and completely loved it.
Sequels are often bad. I usually don't read series, but this one just sounded too good. The majority of sequels often do not live up to the standards set down by the first work. It is rare that a sequel equals or exceeds the original work, Empires Strikes Back for example. Eye of the Moon is one of those rare sequels that is just as good as the first book. It continues the author's blend of Tarintino inspired dialogue, Ridley Scott action and laugh out loud dark humor at parts. The plot is just as fast, furious (not those stupid movies), and bloody as hell. If you don't like violence, this series is not for you. Now I'm off to read the 3rd book in the series. I can't believe I'm reading a series. This is only the second time I've done this before. I don't know how it will go from here, but the 1st and 2nd books in the series are keepers to reread years down the line.
Recently reread "The Book With No Name" and then found there was actually a sequel. With the first book being a wild ride, naturally I was excited to read the sequel.
Wow. I was most definitely underwhelmed!
So it starts with a back story for a selection of characters in TBWNN, and then whisks you ahead to find out what happened after that book. Fine, we've seen this kind of set up before, but the existing character list was already extensive, yet still more have been added.
I really wanted to like it, but about a quarter of the way in, I was reading it just to finish it. It was like a strained marathon of strangers with a jittery storyline where I just didn't feel connected enough to root for anyone's success.
Was I concerned about how r*pe-obsessed some of the male characters were? Yes.
Do I care about the Bourbon Kid's real identity at the end? Nope
I've seen that there's a ridiculous amount of books now in this series. Will I be reading them? Absolutely not.
