Weltgeschichte(n) - Eroberer der Meere: Die Wikinger

Rate this book

Quick review: I got this out of my library after seeing the striking cover, and I honestly thought it was a fictional historical novel about the vikings. Its definitely non fiction however, as Dominic Sandbrook takes the reader through the very real adventures of the vikings, their numerous battles and the far flung places they went pillaging and looting. As someone from thr North East of England you'd think I'd be up to speed with my viking history, but honestly I went into this knowing next to nothing and while the vikings are still not my specialist area, this did a great job of bringing the history to life and presenting it in an entertaining, story like way. My interest did wane a bit towards the end (again, vikings are not really my thing) but I really liked the sections devoted to Eric the Red and his son Leif, who discovered Greenland and Canada respectively.

Great introduction to the vikings and their illustrious history.

This was a fun historical romp, looking at a civilisation I have minimal prior knowledge of.

Whilst primarily targeting teens, this book doesn't hold your hand, and gave an excellent insight into a world-altering culture, which redefined naval warfare and Guerilla tactics.

Even though this was written for a younger audience, I truly enjoyed Sandbrook's book on my ancestors. Wonderful prose and imagery coloring the stories I have been told since I was a child.

A great introduction to Norse culture and my people's history.

Highly recommended for all ages.

Fury of the Vikings by Dominic Sandbrook is part of a 7-book series on interesting stories in history. This book in particular goes over the entire history of what we call "The Vikings." This 5-part, 20-chapter book brings you into the Viking world, from Vinland to Finland, from West Francia to East Anglia, from Constantinople and back to your Barnes and Noble. This book really does have a lot to offer, Part one begins in the Nine worlds that surround the life tree, Yggdrasil. I really enjoy how the Author explains Norse mythology, it maybe be boring for readers, but it is essential to understand why the Vikings were the way they were.

Part 2-5 is where the real story begins, I highly recommend this book to people who'd like to learn more about Viking history, this was honestly better than most other historical books I've ever read and there's so much to it I might read it again! For October, I'm going to be reading his book on the Great War, definitely want to read the whole Adventures in Time series. Of course, I just have to put this in the Genre Choice category, really good book, lot of effort put into it.

This was a great read. Though written for probably a tween/young teen reading level, I enjoyed it immensely. Sandbrook doesn't footnote his sources, though he does sometimes give an aside of where we get this information, but he writes with confidence and clarity, just like he sounds on his podcast. Will definitely be assigning this to my girls for the Vikings portion of English history, and I will be seeking out some of his other works, as well.

Sandbrook tells a compelling story about the Northmen and their fury. Especially strong at weaving their mythology and history together.
