Just Everyday Heroes: Day Shift series #1. Contemporary romance.
Dr Ben Torres is a trauma surgeon at St Anthony Hospital. He’s burned out. He spends hours and hours putting people back together and they go out and put themselves back in danger again. Arguing with a patient is bad form. Punching that patient ends up with Ben being suspended. He’s not sure he wants to go back.
Jessica Bradford is the head ER nurse. She’s been put in charge of getting Ben back on the straight and narrow line of behavior. Ben’s not exactly cooperative when she tries to talk to him. Being manipulated into spending time outside the hospital with Ben is solely to get over her crush. But that doesn’t exactly work as she expects.
Engaging romance. I felt so much empathy for Ben reading this book. Multiple secondary characters that can be expected in the rest of the series fill out the storyline. I love the philanthropy angle that plays a large role in Bradford family. I look forward to reading the rest of the series that have been in my bookcases for several years.

Grrrrr! It started off really good. Cute, funny and I really loved Ben. Then it just went flat around half way through. I didn't like Jess. I skimmed to the end after 65%. Not sure if I want to move on with the series:(

Ben Torres, stimato e abile chirurgo, non aveva raccontato a nessuno la vera ragione per cui aveva lasciato il pronto soccorso. Ne aveva abbastanza di dolore, sangue e morte. Voleva raccontare tutto a Jessica, sfogarsi con lei per sentirsi più libero, più in pace. Lei era il direttore del pronto soccorso, sempre ligia e inflessibile nel suo lavoro, che pretendeva il massimo dai suoi collaboratori.
Dio solo sapeva per quale motivo l’opinione di lei a Ben importasse tanto, forse, se le avesse detto cosa era successo in Sudan del Sud, avrebbe capito. Non era andato in quel luogo sperduto per nessun tipo di lode o prestigio. Ci era andato perché suo padre gli aveva inculcato che chi aveva in abbondanza era chiamato ad aiutare quelli che non avevano.
Ma da poco aveva scoperto che l’ospedale mobile era stato attaccato e che aveva perso molte persone care in quell’unico evento.
Ma non le disse niente. Preferì convincersi di volersi solo divertire con lei, anche perché le aspettative di Jessica erano di gran lunga eccessive per i suoi gusti, non poteva stare anche a preoccuparsi di esserne all’altezza.
Jessica, d'altro canto, doveva dimostrare a Ben che era l’uomo giusto per lei. Non per l’infermiera del pronto soccorso superorganizzata e carrierista, ma per la donna che sapeva che l’uomo adatto a lei non era perfetto, ma assolutamente "Su misura" per lei.
L'ambientazione ospedaliera mi è piaciuta molto ma la storia non mi ha coinvolta, né convinta.
Alcuni dialoghi e fatti li ho trovati insensati.

Jessica Bradford, ha trent'anni, è un'infermiera del pronto soccorso nonché la direttrice dei servizi di emergenza dell'ospedale ed è una ragazza responsabile che deve avere sempre tutto sotto controllo. Ben Torres è un dottore di chirurgia nello stesso ospedale, è serio, concentrato, calmo e composto. Inoltre è un amico di Sam, il fratello di Jessica. Nonostante sia tra i migliori medici, la lite che si scatena a causa di un paziente, spinge Ben a reagire in modo sopra le righe, condotta che lo porta ad essere sospeso. L'amico Sam chiede alla sorella di tenerlo fuori dai guai e la ragazza, che è sempre stata una che si prende cura di tutti anche sacrificandosi, accetta. Ma il Ben che deve affrontare è un ragazzo molto diverso da quello che incontrava in ospedale. Sin dalle prime pagine capiamo l'intesa tra i due e questa nuova realtà cambia le carte in tavola tra loro: per trovare una soluzione scommettono di venirsi incontro. Quest'idea della Nicholas è semplicemente geniale. È un darsi per ricevere in modo particolare e soprattutto mette alla prova i protagonisti che tentano di far capire le proprie posizioni all'altro. Chi cederà? Ma chi sarà in realtà il vincitore? La scrittrice, con il suo stile fluido e coinvolgente, non si dilunga nella descrizione dei paesaggi e di ciò che c'è intorno ai protagonisti, ma analizza non solo Ben e Jessica - ovviamente in modo molto profondo, facendoceli conoscere nelle loro mille sfaccettature mentre crescono durante la storia -, ma anche tutti i personaggi che li circondano. La storia è raccontata dal punto di vista di entrambi i protagonisti. I confronti tra i due hanno dialoghi schietti e ci consentono di capire cosa nascondono, permettendoci di giustificarli e comprenderli. Proprio il frequentarsi permette loro di svelarsi e avvicinarsi. Entrambi hanno sempre fatto la cosa giusta, ma iniziano a essere stanchi e questa consapevolezza li porta a lasciarsi andare accettando la famosa sfida. Tra i personaggi minori c'è il già citato fratello di Jessica, Sam, poi ci sono gli altri ragazzi del gruppo come Dooley, uno dei migliori amici di Sam, Mac, un pompiere soccorritore, Kevin altro paramedico. Conosciamo anche la sorella minore Sara di Jessica, che gestisce il centro giovanile di famiglia e alcuni ragazzi che lo frequentano. Pagina dopo pagina assistiamo al gioco erotico tra Ben e Jessica e ho adorato il confronto finale tra i due.

Se come me avete pensato di approcciarvi a questa lettura perché colpite dalla particolare ambientazione, tra le corsie di un pronto soccorso, immaginandovi di rivivere i nuovi Meredith e Dott. Stranamore, purtroppo ne resterete deluse.
Jessica è capo infermiera al pronto soccorso e dopo un passato da ribelle ha deciso di dedicare la sua vita ad aiutare il prossimo, in qualunque modo ed in qualunque posto, nel lavoro, con i fratelli, tra gli amici e al centro per ragazzi problematici che le ha lasciato il padre. Ben è uno stimato e capacissimo chirurgo d’urgenza, sempre pronto a dedicare se stesso per salvare la vita degli altri, finché il suo self control non viene messo alla prova da un paziente ubriaco che scatenerà tutta la sua violenza con conseguente sospensione dal lavoro. Una dolce Candy Candy con la sindrome da crocerossina ed un medico in crisi esistenziale che ha deciso di pensare solo a se stesso saranno pronti a scatenare una battaglia a suon di prese di posizione, da una parte il bene degli altri e dall’altra la salvaguardia della propria sanità mentale, mentre in sottofondo sfrigola l’attrazione.
E mi dispiace dirlo ma a me non è crepitato niente, anzi purtroppo ho trovato il tutto abbastanza noioso tanto da farmi venire voglia alle volte di saltare le pagine.

It started off cute and light, then got strangely preachy. The heroine was interesting at first, then it started to get like she had a really really misspent youth, but... eh, the reveal didn't really seem so bad to me that she felt like she had to do penance for a whole decade. And the hero, who spent many of his younger years in Africa...
Okay, seriously? Africa is a big continent with a lot of stuff going on. So these hints about African masks, and helping farmers learn how to farm, and not getting a home cooked meal, and a rebel base (no mention of Darth Vader, though)... were weird. I mean, ok, because of the farm equipment now I'm picturing a rural area, possibly, and probably not near a refugee camp, but still... mountains or plains? Rain forest or desert? North, south, somewhere in between? Was he there with an NGO like MSF/DWB or a corporate sponsor or some other group? Did he have to learn KiSwahili or French or could he get by with just English? Or maybe he moved around to different parts of Africa, but if so, what was his favorite place to be? Did he make any friends there? I mean, this is a potentially really cool back-story and all we get is Africa + a few clunky stereotypes that don't really add up to anything.
Also, and this part was just confusing, there's a secondary character named Kevin who is apparently Christian. The author references this a lot, as if it's weird to be Christian in Omaha, NE, but... based on things other characters say it's apparent that several of them are Christian. So why is Kevin's Christian-ness so worth mentioning? Other than that, he's just a walk-on character. I mean, really, I wouldn't be questioning it if it weren't mentioned every. single. time this character comes on screen. What's the deal?
So, anyway, I was kind of going back and forth about whether to finish reading this when I decided to skip to the end and see how everything's resolved... and the characters are all so unbearably self-righteous and judgmental towards each other that even the fun ones seemed like people I wouldn't want to spend time with.
I mean, this wasn't horrible, but I think that the intended audience for this is not me. On the plus side, it was a free Samhain promotion, and now I know not to try anything else by this author.

Non ho trovato in questo libro il cliché dell’infermiera che si innamora del seducente dottore, al contrario la storia che si sviluppa è distante in un certo senso dall’ambiente ospedaliero e presta una grande attenzione a quello che è il lato psicologico dei singoli protagonisti.
La lettura di “Su misura” è piacevole e scorrevole ottima per chi vuole un po’ di leggerezza, ma allo stesso tempo nulla di frivolo.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, was it perfect no and there were parts I found annoying as we were supposed to especially Jessica's insistence on making Ben perfect and wanting him to still be an ER surgeon when he quits and says he doesn't want to instead wants to be selfish for once in his life.
Jessica is an ER nurse and incredibly responsible who always does the right thing but that wasn't always the case, she grew up with a do-gooder father who gave away all the money they had except for essentials and her mother unable to take it left. At 16 she too rebelled, partied and got involved with an older man who pampered her and showed her the world and then she changed when her father died defending her apartment at 20. She was now in charge of everything, her two younger siblings included.
I found her holier than thou attitude annoying sometimes, even when she saw Ben was hurting she still persisted on the fact that he had to be a surgeon. He had a similar upbringing like her, a missionary father, he himself spent years in Africa but it all got too much when the village he worked in was slaughtered and then the man he patched up killed 3 people, he lost it and punched him and got suspended, feeling good about it and wanting to let loose.
Jessica is sent to rescue him by her brother and bunch of friends and she learns that he too has been lusting after her. There is a lot of sexual tension in the book but the consummation takes a long time coming because Jessica is all about being a role-model, be it her job or the Centre in her father's name.
I liked it when she came to the realization that it was Ben's choice to do as he pleased and that if being a doctor was hurting him he had every right to quit. I really liked Ben as well, after a lifetime of responsibility he deserved to have fun and Jessica making him feel bad about it was not done.
I really liked Sam and other friends so will continue with the series.

You can tell that this is an earlier book than the author's Boys of the Bayou series, since the POV bounces around more than it should. I was constantly stopping and going back to see if I missed a scene break, but no. This is an irritant of mine.
The other thing that bothered me was a lack of communication. They both spent so much time in their heads, having all these revelations, but then they never shared with each other. It was so frustrating to know that a simple discussion would be beneficial to them both. On the other hand, they would start to have a meaningful conversation - where Jessica would start to show anger at his whiny privilege - and then it would get cut off by a make-out session. (These are adults, right?)
I absolutely loathed Russ, Chief of Emergency Medicine. First of all, he had no right to make her babysitting Ben a condition of whether or not he recommended her for a position. And then, the way he kept telling her to do "whatever necessary" made me think he was fine with pimping her out. It was unsettling to think that a hospital administrator was using his authority in this way.
The pacing was also a bit off for me. So much build up and I was just bored by the whole thing. Their first time together is approximately 67% of the way in the book. That doesn't leave a whole hell of a lot of time for personal epiphanies and solving issues when the story ends at 92% of the book.
When Jess tells him that she loves him - numerous times - he doesn't say anything back. Nothing is mentioned about this. He yells at her, belittles her, is honestly quite nasty to her, but he never apologizes. (And when he feels up another woman hours after storming away from Jess? Made my stomach churn. Is that how he's going to be throughout the rest of their relationship?) Why is she the one who has to make the grand gesture when he is the one who screwed up? I hate it when female characters not only allow their male counterparts to treat them like dirt, but then they apologize for provoking that behaviour. Disgusting.
And finally, the ending put me in mind of the movie Grease. Even though Danny ran track to get a letterman sweater, underneath he was still punk. Sandy is the one who seemed to change the most, mentally as well as physically.
Overall I was really disappointed in this book. Not sure if I'll be continuing on with this series or not, particularly since I hate the male whore trope, and Sam is one. (Come to think of it, it seems like Ben was a bit of a slut, too, but his being angry at Jess's limited sexual experience was okay because ... you know what? It just wasn't okay. Ugh.)

I absolutely loathed Russ, Chief of Emergency Medicine. First of all, he had no right to make her babysitting Ben a condition of whether or not he recommended her for a position. And then, the way he kept telling her to do "whatever necessary" made me think he was fine with pimping her out. It was unsettling to think that a hospital administrator was using his authority in this way.
The pacing was also a bit off for me. So much build up and I was just bored by the whole thing. Their first time together is approximately 67% of the way in the book. That doesn't leave a whole hell of a lot of time for personal epiphanies and solving issues when the story ends at 92% of the book.
When Jess tells him that she loves him - numerous times - he doesn't say anything back. Nothing is mentioned about this. He yells at her, belittles her, is honestly quite nasty to her, but he never apologizes. (And when he feels up another woman hours after storming away from Jess? Made my stomach churn. Is that how he's going to be throughout the rest of their relationship?) Why is she the one who has to make the grand gesture when he is the one who screwed up? I hate it when female characters not only allow their male counterparts to treat them like dirt, but then they apologize for provoking that behaviour. Disgusting.
And finally, the ending put me in mind of the movie Grease. Even though Danny ran track to get a letterman sweater, underneath he was still punk. Sandy is the one who seemed to change the most, mentally as well as physically.
Overall I was really disappointed in this book. Not sure if I'll be continuing on with this series or not, particularly since I hate the male whore trope, and Sam is one. (Come to think of it, it seems like Ben was a bit of a slut, too, but his being angry at Jess's limited sexual experience was okay because ... you know what? It just wasn't okay. Ugh.)

Jessica Bradford è un’infermiera del pronto soccorso ed è una di quelle donne che ama avere tutto sotto controllo, per questo, nell’ospedale dove lavora, è conosciuta come Il Generale.
Ben Torres lavora nello stesso ospedale di Jessica, lui è un chirurgo, il migliore dello stato.
Ben, al contrario di Jessica, non riesce a essere sempre caldo e tranquillo, così, dopo aver perso le staffe con un paziente, viene sospeso.
Questa sospensione sembra essere una benedizione per Ben perché Sam, suo migliore amico e fratello di Jessica, affida alla sua sorellona il compito di controllare che Ben non si metta nei guai.
Tra i due c’è un’attrazione longeva, quindi nasce subito una bella intesa, che spinge il chirurgo a tirare fuori il meglio di sé.
Nonostante l’attrazione che li legava da tempo, tra i due non c’è mai stato nulla eppure adesso, dopo pochi giorni insieme, tutto cambia.
Con Ben, Jessica si lascia andare, si rilassa e dimentica tutti i suoi problemi.
Con Jessica, Ben si responsabilizza, cresce e migliora.
Nel corso del romanzo vedremo questi protagonisti arrivare davanti a un bivio e prendere delle scelte. Li vedremo crescere, migliorare e amarsi, accettando i difetti dell’altro.
Leggendo vi accorgerete che nessuno dei due personaggi di cui racconta la Nicholas è un perfetto, anzi entrambi sono pieni di dubbi, difetti e imperfezioni, per questo la loro relazione è una di quelle che colpisce davvero.
Sembra una storia di tutti giorni la loro, reale, dove per amare e lasciare andare bisogna solo venirsi incontro e capirsi.
Ho letto questo romanzo molto velocemente, dedicandogli, con piacere, tutta la mia mattinata.
Mi è piaciuto tantissimo, è divertente, passionale, scorrevole e dolcissimo.
Si legge con piacere e, raccontato in terza persona, non si sofferma solo sui protagonisti e sulla loro storia d’amore passionale, ma si dedica a un’intera cerchia di amici e familiari, che spero si allarghi presto.
Nel corso di questa storia incontreremo tantissimi personaggi intriganti, primo tra tutti Sam, e vedremo tutti loro alla prese con problemi giornalieri, alcuni di semplice portata e altri di una certa intensità.
Nel capitolo finale, inoltre, l’autrice ci annuncia che i prossimi protagonisti saranno Sara, la sorella di Sam e Jessica, e Mac, un altro membro di questa splendida famiglia di eroi che non vedo l’ora di conoscere tutta.

Una lettura scorrevole, l' unico pregio di questa storia, ma la mancanza di empatia con entrambi i personaggi e la noia che mi ha tenuta compagnia durante la lettura, non mi hanno fatto apprezzare la storia, peccato la trama prometteva tanto!

Well this book was really cute, I enjoyed the adventure getting to know the characters Ben Torres & Jessica Bradford, a Trauma Surgeon and Director of the ER, I do feel on a level for Jessica she definitely has her work cut out for her on being pretty much the Boss, so what she says go's. But when the Hot-Stud-Muffin-Trauma-Surgeon punches a patient in the nose, then a suspension is definitely in order. Thanks for the Hospital-Hotness Author Erin Nicholas, I will be back with Bells on to read more. *****5 STARS*****

This book was three times longer than it needed to be. The characters, setting, and supporting characters had potential but there was alot of stuff that annoyed me.
Editing would have helped. Transitions from one scene to another is needed. There were many jumps in scene, characters, time or all of the above from one paragraph to the next with no warning, introduction or even a double space. Very confusing. The timeline was also inaccurate or didn't make sense at times.
The relationship isn't great. It needs more development and less they just can't keep their hands off each other.
I have a hard time not finishing a book. I need to get better at it.

Fun sexy contemporary from Erin Nicholas. The heroine, Jessica, has been walking the straight and narrow ever since her father died when she was twenty, leaving her to raise her younger brother and sister. She's an emergency room nurse and oozes responsibility, so she's the first one the hospital administration chooses to babysit hottie Dr. Ben Torres, who's just put the hospital at risk for a huge lawsuit by punching out a patient. Since Jess has been crushing on Ben for a while she's more than happy to comply. Until she realizes that formerly upstanding Ben is hell bent on tossing aside his respectability and being very, very bad. With her!
JUST RIGHT was a funny, sexy, entertaining read that could have veered off into preachy territory, but fortunately never did. With a colorful cast of characters including Jessica's siblings, the local paramedics and the staff of St. Anthony's Hospital, Nicholas has the great beginning to a series here.

this was the one that got me started on Erin Nicholas....I think she is a very talented writer....I've read all the Bradfords books to date, and they keep getting better.....definitely worth the time and money IMO. I'm also hoping there will be additions to the Bradfords series.:-)

Really enjoyed this book was nice little book to get lost in for a couple hours and as training to be a nurse totally related to some of it. Wish all paramedics where as hunky and the ones in this series. Really do recommend as a good read.

It wasn’t until 25% into this audiobook before I realized it’s a reread for me. And I enjoyed it again – the banter, the sometimes-exasperating side characters – all until nearly the end when the H and h each do something that tried my patience.
Ben Torres, trauma surgeon where Jessica Bradford is the head nurse of an E.R., has been fighting off his crush for her going on eight long month. He can’t afford to be distracted at work, besides coworkers are off limits. Ben dedicates his skills to helping others, though it gets difficult to keep giving back when he sees the same people cycle through the E.R. repeatedly. He had already made the decision to leave the chaos behind before the day he punched the belligerent patient in the nose.
Jessica, called the little general behind her back, knows what it takes to keep it together, to do the right thing, to help those in need – she learned those lessons the hard way. These teachings were her father’s mission at the youth center he founded and operated. Jessica rebelled against his stern expectations as an older teen, a choice she came to regret. Following her father’s death when she was twenty, she became guardian of her two siblings. Ten years later, she is devoted to work, running the youth center, and always being there for her adult siblings. And daydreaming about Dr. Torres.

Years ago, I read the third book in this series Just My Type and found enough character background in it to understand the story, though reading the books in order is recommended.
Jessica and Ben have grown up under the strain of fathers who were basically obsessed with mission work. Jessica’s father founded a youth center in Nebraska and devoted his existence to it, even at the neglect of his motherless children. Ben’s father was no less committed, though he and his wife were missionaries in Africa. It was the natural thing for Ben to join Doctor’s Without Borders once his medical training was complete. The death of a parent is the only thing that brought Ben back to the US.
At the start, Jessica only knows Ben through work, though Ben is friends with her brother Sam and Kevin, and Dooley, all of whom are paramedics. When Ben goes off the rails, punching the patient, he ends up plastered in a shabby bar. Of course, Ben’s friends have kept him safe until this point, but now they can’t get him to leave. So, Sam calls Jessica to lure Ben home (hoping she will have sway with him because of his crush). This scene is hilarious and sets up the beginning of their relationship.
Ben is adamant he will not return to work as a doctor, but he finds himself making people’s lives better no matter where he goes. He struggles with guilt for something that was not his fault. This influences his choice to avoid stressors.
Jessica is clearly in need of some fun, but she won’t allow herself time off to relax. Her regrets over past choices spur her into continuous work – either at the E.R. or the youth center.
Jessica and Ben push and pull each other to give what is needed. Together they balance each other out. Their bargaining was cute and creative.
I was enjoying this until around the 75% mark. When the H and h both act with immaturity and it was the tipping point into annoyance for me.

Just Right is Book #1 in the Bradfords series which is about three siblings (Jessica, Sam and Sara). I first read Book #3 (Just My Type which is Sara's story) because I had no idea it was part of a series. I loved Erin Nicholas' writing and humour so much that I immediately bought Book #1 and #2 and I knew that I would be in for a treat. And I was not disappointed!
Just Right is Jessica's story: she is the eldest sibling, who was once a rebellious teenager but who stepped up and raised her brother and sister after their father died when she was just around 20. Since then Jessica changed her ways and became the always reliable, serious and responsible older sister and perfect nurse. Her Saturday nights are spent either watching the TV, scrubbing her bathroom or washing laundry, until her office crush forsakes the respectable role of a responsible take charge doctor and spends his days in bars getting drunk and not having a care in the world.
Ben is the star surgeon at the clinic, however he feels his life is not satisfying anymore. His frustration and anger mounts every time when he sees a patient he cared for not doing their part in the recovery. Then one day he explodes when a man he saved a couple of weeks ago has a DUI accident and causes the death of a lot of innocent people. Ben gets suspended for some time after punching the guy, to cool off as his superiors say, but Ben doesn't have any intention to cool off. He's had it with the ER and the stupid careless patients and all the stress and worrying which go with being a doctor. So he goes on a self-destruction or should we say college boy rampage: he gets drunk, plays pool and flirts with women. Enters Jessica, whom her brother (who is also Ben's friend) asked to babysit Ben and make sure he doesn't get in trouble. And that's when lot of trouble ensues... (but just the kind that we readers love :-p)
Erin Nicholas' characterisation was great: not only were the two main characters interesting and layered, but she spent enough time and detail on the supporting cast to make them more than just mere props (I also can't wait to see them again in later books).
Ben is not simply a drop dead gorgeous doctor, but he is also a complex character and I loved Jessica peeling back his layers and getting to know more about his background and secrets.
The chemistry between Ben and Jessica is instant combustion, I dare you to read Just Right and not need a fan! :-p
And just one quote to give you a taste of the witty writing:
"And of course you had to scare them off with a dysfunctional penis story," he said, as if they were talking about the weather.
She smiled and lifted a shoulder. "First thing that came to mind."
"My penis is the first thing that came to mind?"
Cracks me up every time :-D
(you have to know this is kind of the very first dialogue these two share! lol)
Verdict: If you haven't read anything by Erin Nicholas yet, now is the time to pick up one of her books, I'm sure you'll have a great time :-)

Everyone has a favorite “go to” author. The one that no matter what….you know you’ll love their book and smile while reading the whole time! Erin Nicholas is that author for me! No matter what she writes, I love! She never disappoints!! I read the Bradford series a long time ago, but decided to a re-read of each book so I could leave reviews!
Just Right is book one in the Bradford Series. It’s about oh so sexy doctor, Ben Torres and always in charge Jessica Bradford. When Ben gets fed up with medicine, it’s Jessica’s job to keep her eye on him. Of course, it doesn’t take long before she’s got other body parts on him too! ;) Ben feels like he is working for nothing. He fixes people up just so they get hurt again. He walks away from in all in very dramatic fashion. Ben doesn’t want to be a hero but Jessica can’t look at him any other way. Jessica is constantly thinking about being responsible and following the rules and Ben just wants to ruffle her feathers and shake things up a bit. Throw some VERY hot and steamy moments and you’ve got yourself a fantastic book!
I love these two characters together! They really balance each other out and make me smile. And Ben….have I mentioned that he is so sexy? I love his laid back but boss (when he needs to be) attitude! My favorite type of guy. You’ll get love, family, dedication, sexiness and a dressing room experience you don’t want to miss in this book!

Da otto mesi Ben e Jessica lavorano fianco a fianco e da otto mesi sono attratti l'uno dall'altra, ma sanno che non è possibile iniziare una relazione: il loro lavoro li vuole sempre assolutamente concentrati e la necessità di prendere decisioni istantanee e importanti va di pari passo con quella di non farsi distrarre dai sentimenti.
Ben ha lavorato per cinque anni in Sudan del Sud, come volontario, e questa esperienza, ispiratagli dal padre missionario, lo ha cambiato e maturato, ma soprattutto lo turba molto la notizia che ha appena ricevuto dall'Africa.
Ora è stanco e arrabbiato ed è convinto di non essere più in grado di svolgere al meglio il suo lavoro, perché combatte quotidianamente contro i mulini a vento, salvando la vita a gente che non ha alcuna considerazione di questo bene tanto prezioso e talvolta non riuscendo nemmeno in questo.
La sua frustrazione lo porta a un gesto inconsulto e all'espulsione temporanea dal posto di lavoro.
C'è bisogno di qualcuno che gli faccia cambiare idea e Sam pensa che una mano femminile possa riuscire laddove lui e i suoi amici hanno fallito; così si rivolge a Jessica, incaricandola di riportare Ben sulla retta via.
I due giovani cominciano a frequentarsi, Ben vuole sciogliere un po' la bella infermiera, sempre tanto impegnata a dare il massimo e a mettere gli altri al primo posto; vuole farla divertire in attività rilassanti. Jessica da parte sua scopre in Ben una persona diversa: fuori dall'ospedale è molto più rilassato, più divertente, ma non perde minimamente il suo fascino e la sua aria scanzonata e conquista le persone che lo circondano. L'attrazione, che in ospedale era tenuta sotto chiave, esplode e le battute a sfondo sessuale si moltiplicano. Jess non ha perso però la speranza di convincerlo a rientrare in ospedale, certa che la bravura di Ben come chirurgo non abbia uguali e pensando che sia sprecato in lavori diversi da quello per cui ha studiato.
Jessica porta Ben al Centro giovanile fondato per volere del padre, ormai scomparso: il recupero di giovani disadattati impegna moltissimo la donna, che offre il suo tempo libero dando una mano alla sorella, direttrice del centro stesso. Inizialmente Ben è restio a farsi coinvolgere, soprattutto perché gli vengono richiesti anche consulti medici, ma presto trova una nuova dimensione nell'aiutare quelle persone e quando alcuni rimarranno coinvolti in casi più gravi, sarà lui in persona a prendersene cura in ospedale, trovando nuovi slanci, ma rischiando di perdere chi per lui è diventato ormai importante.
Fin qui a grandi linee la trama. Confesso che personalmente non ho letto molti libri ambientati in ambito ospedaliero; la trama tuttavia è abbastanza scontata, anche se non posso negare l'abilità dell'autrice nel descrivere certe scene: l'iniziale "recupero" di Ben da parte di Jessica dal bar in cui il chirurgo si era rifugiato, ad esempio, è divertente e ci parla di un momento giocoso e sensuale. Il tutto però è rovinato dai numerosi e assurdi errori di punteggiatura e non solo, che in parte tolgono il piacere della lettura. Non sono gli unici: il libro è costellato di refusi ed errori di traduzione ed è un peccato che un'autrice best seller del New York Times e Usa Today venga presentata in questo modo al suo esordio in Italia. Ci sono altri brani divertenti: lo scambio tra Ben e Sam, ad esempio, mi ha fatto ridere e il carattere del fratellino di Jessica è tratteggiato perfettamente. Ne esce un giovane che sa godersi in pieno la vita, scopatore seriale senza pensieri e preoccupato solo che Ben e la sorella non abbiano ancora concluso… i suoi amici sono sulla sua lunghezza d'onda, il divertimento è il loro unico pensiero, sebbene sappiano poi farsi carico di incarichi importanti e siano presenti nel momento del bisogno.
Jessica è perfetta, la donna efficiente in ogni ambito: al lavoro e al centro dà sempre il meglio di sé; non si gode la vita, è una sorta di espiazione la sua, per saldare un debito immaginario nei confronti del padre, uomo generoso e sempre disponibile, che le ha insegnato che l'amore è fatto di pazienza, attesa e accettazione. Così saprà riconoscere che il nuovo Ben, quello che ha lasciato l'ospedale, è felice facendo cose semplici e comunque riesce a dare tanto alle persone, perché la sua prima capacità è quella di ascoltare e poi cercare di soddisfare le esigenze della gente. Proprio in virtù di questi insegnamenti, sa accettare l'allontanamento del chirurgo, quando ancora una volta si convince dell'inutilità di lottare per persone che si fanno del male e ne fanno agli altri.
Ben è il classico bravo ragazzo e il fatto che sia un gran bell'uomo non guasta: forse il miglior chirurgo della zona, eppure si scopre felice anche semplicemente preparando e servendo caffè. Le sue visite al centro giovanile diventano un appuntamento fisso, perché scopre che aiutare gli altri è insito nella sua natura e inoltre è ben consapevole dello sforzo sostenuto da Jessica per dare fiducia e possibilità a quegli sfortunati ragazzi. Dare una mano gli consente anche di sollevare Jessica e di convincerla a divertirsi facendo qualcosa di pazzo con lui.
Il libro offre spunti di riflessione su questa professione così affascinante, ma così difficile: lavorare sempre a stretto contatto con la sofferenza, cercare disperatamente di salvare vite umane, talvolta essere costretti ad ammettere il fallimento, nonostante lo sforzo, l'impegno e il tempo dedicato, ci aiuta a comprendere che per non perdere l'umanità un medico deve sapersi far coinvolgere, ma non travolgere dai casi che segue. Inoltre il Pronto Soccorso è un reparto dove l'emergenza è di casa e non è possibile rilassarsi e prendere la vita con calma: spesso la decisione deve essere immediata e la valutazione di rischi e benefici è tanto repentina da creare forte stress in chi vi lavora.
Confesso che il libro è carino e si è rivelato anche migliore nella seconda parte, tuttavia ho già avuto modo di scrivere che i troppi errori ne hanno rovinato la piacevolezza; inoltre non sono entrata in profonda sintonia con lo stile dell'autrice, non mi ha provocato emozioni profonde né scombussolata o coinvolta.

This is the first book in the Bradfords series and I cannot wait to read the rest. Erin has such a way of bringing her characters together that have you feeling like you’re right there with them. I did not want to put this book down until I was finished reading it.
Dr. Ben Torres is a surgeon at the same hospital where Jessica Bradford is an ER nurse and many people consider him a hero. He’s been interested in Jessica for a long time, but one night while working in the ER has his temper getting the best of him, and it probably wasn’t the best way to get her attention. Punching a patient in the nose while treating them was a guarantee to a suspension and a possible law suit, so he figures that is a big strike against him in Jessica’s book. The suspension also has him thinking really hard about his career.
Jessica has been working at a promotion for quite a while and the opportunity is finally within her grasp, but she didn’t expect the next part of her job for getting that promotion to be babysitting Ben to keep him out of trouble. Now, she has to try to hide her feelings for him so she can do her best to help him. He has turned to drinking and she has figured out that the only way to get him out of the bar is by agreeing to a bet that if she loses she will have to spend the next 48 hours with him and him alone. She loses, and while she’s trying to keep him out of trouble things are not going at all as she planned, but they will have some great memories to think back on.

Just Right is just as fun the second time around. Jessica and Ben pulled me in just like before.
Opposites attract or opposite desires for the future attract in this book. Ben doesn't want to be a doctor anymore. Jessica can't wrap her mind around Ben not wanting to help people. Conflict abounds between them.
It’s easy to understand why Ben doesn’t want to be a doctor anymore as his past is revealed. Ben’s decision leads Jessica to wonder if the fantasy she created around Ben is better than the reality. A potential promotion for Jessica has her trying to keep Ben out of trouble. The biggest trouble is the chance of losing her heart to the guy who doesn’t want to be committed to anything anymore.
The chemistry between them keeps pulling them together even through their attempts to resist. Ben believes Jessica is a good girl. Jessica has worked too hard on her good girl image to let Ben’s sudden bad boy ways detour her. It’s a tug of war with desire that keeps you turning the pages.
Erin Nicholas infuses humor and fun into the book. The conversations and innuendos add to the enjoyment.
I recommend this book to any reader looking for a fun, sexy romance.

Miei cari lettori, apriamo questo 2020 con la recensione di una lettura che ha accompagnato gli ultimi giorni dell'anno che è appena passato. Su misura di Erin Nicholas, edito da Triskell Edizioni, è il primo capitolo di una nuova, romantica serie, la Just Everyday Heroes. Con un'ambientazione ospedaliera che solleticherà l'interesse degli amanti di serie televisive come Grey's Anatomy o The Night Shift, questo primo capitolo ci porterà nel mondo di Ben Torres, affascinante e abile chirurgo d'urgenza e Jessica Bradford, infermiera e Direttore del Pronto Soccorso.
Il Dott. Torres è un uomo competente, il miglior traumatologo che Jessica abbia mai conosciuto. Che la temperatura si alzi notevolmente quando lui è all'interno della sua stessa stanza non influisce minimamente sul giudizio che di lui come professionista. Jessica è irrimediabilmente infatuata del bel chirurgo, ma la sua dedizione al lavoro le impedisce che i suoi sentimenti interferiscano con il suo mestiere. In un posto dove ogni minuto è prezioso per salvare una vita, nessuna distrazione, nessun passo falso, e sembra che anche il Dott. Torres la pensi come lei, o forse non si è nemmeno accorto della sua esistenza.
Quando un momento di pressione farà uscire fuori di testa Ben Torres, il quale aggredisce un paziente stendendolo con un pugno, Jessica capirà che il chirurgo l'ha notata eccome!
A raccogliere i pezzi di una brillante carriera in procinto di dissolversi in un mare di alcol sarà proprio Jessica. Il loro sarà una sorta di patto, una scommessa, e ognuno dovrà dare qualcosa all'altro.
Nello specifico, Jessica imparerà da Ben ad essere meno rigida, a divertirsi di più, mentre Ben capirà che il suo lavoro non è diventato inutile solo perchè si perde qualcuno lungo la via.
Una lotta contro e stessi e l'inizio di un sentimento che va oltre le apparenze, ma si addentra nella vera essenza delle anime di Ben e Jessica.
Su misura è un romance delizioso, con dei protagonisti brillanti e intensi che sono circondati da una miriade di altri personaggi che fanno da contorno e la trasformano in una storia corale di affetti sinceri e amicizia vera.
Jessica è un vero e proprio generale. Inflessibile con se stessa, sul lavoro e nella vita pretende sempre il massimo. Troppo giovane è stata costretta a diventare adula e a prendersi cura della sua famiglia. Il fatto di essere cresciuta in fretta, sommersa da una miriade di responsabilità, ha spento il su lato frivolo, seppellendo la vitalità di una ragazza il cui massimo del divertimento è fare un doppio turno in ospedale pur di poter stare al fianco di Ben Torres.
Jessica amava la calma e la sicurezza. E voleva qualcuno in grado di placare la tempesta, che in un attimo sapesse di cosa c’era bisogno, che potesse provvedere. Voleva qualcuno che desiderasse salvare il mondo accanto a lei. E non solo al lavoro.
Ben è l'uomo che invade le fantasie di ogni lettrice romance. Bello, prestante, seduttivo e il migliore quando si tratta di salvare vite.
Ma la pressione esercitata da un lavoro in cui continuamente si possono perdere delle vite mette a dura prova le ragioni che hanno portato Ben a scegliere il suo mestiere. Adesso è stanco. Stanco di lottare continuamente, stanco di perdere parti di sè ad ogni errore, stano di fare sempre la cosa giusta, stanco di non essere abbastanza. Forse è meglio lasciar perdere tutto e fare qualcosa di meno impegnativo, un lavoro in cui ogni giorno non ti chiedi se qualcuno approfitterà della sua seconda occasione vivendo al meglio, oppure rifarà gli stessi sbagli.
Avevo iniziato a credere che avrei cambiato il loro mondo. Ero così pieno di me, sicuro di quello che stavo facendo. Alla fine, niente di quello che ho fatto ha avuto importanza.
Ho compreso pienamente i dubbi che attanagliano Ben, la profonda crisi che lo attraversa, tipica di chi opera nell'ambito della salute e dell'assistenza. In ballo c'è materiale umano e per quanto un professionista tenti di scrollarsi di dosso le proprie giornate lavorative, ogni persona incontrata è sempre con te a reclamare attenzione.
Facile cadere in una sorta di delirio di onnipotenza, ma non si può aggiustare tutto, e allora tocca fare i conti con la propria finitezza e fragilità.
Per Jessica la crisi di Ben è incomprensibile. Un talento così grande non può essere sprecato, ma usato al servizio di coloro che hanno bisogno, ad ogni livello.
Entrare uno nella vita dell'altro sarà un modo non solo per coltivare il nascente sentimento, ma anche per rivedere le proprie posizioni nei confronti della vita.
Lasciarsi andare, imparare di nuovo a divertirsi avrà la stessa importanza del salvare vite, poco importa se qualcosa va storto lungo la strada, l'importante è la forza con cui si portano avanti certi principii.
Jessica Bradford era una donna fantastica, disciplinata, zelante, generosa. Non meritava solo candele e rose. Meritava una dichiarazione di amore eterno e un enorme anello di diamante alla mano sinistra. Da un uomo che non avesse intenzione di starsene a bordocampo a osservarla salvare il mondo. Da un uomo che volesse stare lì accanto a lei e diventare anche lui un eroe.L’ideale per uno che voleva lasciar perdere tutto e togliersi il mantello da supereroe.Era proprio nei guai.
Mi sono divertita e commossa leggendo Su misura. Erin Nicholas ha uno stile semplice, una trama niente affatto scontata o banale. Se proprio devo trovare un difetto il ritmo risulta un po' lento, ma non mi è dispiaciuto il fatto di raccontare un istant-love come uno slow brun. Il rapporto tra Ben e Jessica è sia intenso che esilarante. Dialoghi frizzanti, fanno da sfondo a vicende travolgenti. Bello il rapporto di Ben con i suoi amici, tra cui Sam, il fratello di Jessica, uno sfacciato rubacuori, con massime profonde sempre pronte per risolvere una situazione spinosa. Non vedo l'ora di leggere gli altri libri della serie e incontrare ancora tutti i personaggi che hanno animato questa storia.

Su misura è un romance delizioso, con dei protagonisti brillanti e intensi che sono circondati da una miriade di altri personaggi che fanno da contorno e la trasformano in una storia corale di affetti sinceri e amicizia vera.
Jessica è un vero e proprio generale. Inflessibile con se stessa, sul lavoro e nella vita pretende sempre il massimo. Troppo giovane è stata costretta a diventare adula e a prendersi cura della sua famiglia. Il fatto di essere cresciuta in fretta, sommersa da una miriade di responsabilità, ha spento il su lato frivolo, seppellendo la vitalità di una ragazza il cui massimo del divertimento è fare un doppio turno in ospedale pur di poter stare al fianco di Ben Torres.
Jessica amava la calma e la sicurezza. E voleva qualcuno in grado di placare la tempesta, che in un attimo sapesse di cosa c’era bisogno, che potesse provvedere. Voleva qualcuno che desiderasse salvare il mondo accanto a lei. E non solo al lavoro.
Ben è l'uomo che invade le fantasie di ogni lettrice romance. Bello, prestante, seduttivo e il migliore quando si tratta di salvare vite.
Ma la pressione esercitata da un lavoro in cui continuamente si possono perdere delle vite mette a dura prova le ragioni che hanno portato Ben a scegliere il suo mestiere. Adesso è stanco. Stanco di lottare continuamente, stanco di perdere parti di sè ad ogni errore, stano di fare sempre la cosa giusta, stanco di non essere abbastanza. Forse è meglio lasciar perdere tutto e fare qualcosa di meno impegnativo, un lavoro in cui ogni giorno non ti chiedi se qualcuno approfitterà della sua seconda occasione vivendo al meglio, oppure rifarà gli stessi sbagli.
Avevo iniziato a credere che avrei cambiato il loro mondo. Ero così pieno di me, sicuro di quello che stavo facendo. Alla fine, niente di quello che ho fatto ha avuto importanza.
Ho compreso pienamente i dubbi che attanagliano Ben, la profonda crisi che lo attraversa, tipica di chi opera nell'ambito della salute e dell'assistenza. In ballo c'è materiale umano e per quanto un professionista tenti di scrollarsi di dosso le proprie giornate lavorative, ogni persona incontrata è sempre con te a reclamare attenzione.
Facile cadere in una sorta di delirio di onnipotenza, ma non si può aggiustare tutto, e allora tocca fare i conti con la propria finitezza e fragilità.
Per Jessica la crisi di Ben è incomprensibile. Un talento così grande non può essere sprecato, ma usato al servizio di coloro che hanno bisogno, ad ogni livello.
Entrare uno nella vita dell'altro sarà un modo non solo per coltivare il nascente sentimento, ma anche per rivedere le proprie posizioni nei confronti della vita.
Lasciarsi andare, imparare di nuovo a divertirsi avrà la stessa importanza del salvare vite, poco importa se qualcosa va storto lungo la strada, l'importante è la forza con cui si portano avanti certi principii.
Jessica Bradford era una donna fantastica, disciplinata, zelante, generosa. Non meritava solo candele e rose. Meritava una dichiarazione di amore eterno e un enorme anello di diamante alla mano sinistra. Da un uomo che non avesse intenzione di starsene a bordocampo a osservarla salvare il mondo. Da un uomo che volesse stare lì accanto a lei e diventare anche lui un eroe.L’ideale per uno che voleva lasciar perdere tutto e togliersi il mantello da supereroe.Era proprio nei guai.
Mi sono divertita e commossa leggendo Su misura. Erin Nicholas ha uno stile semplice, una trama niente affatto scontata o banale. Se proprio devo trovare un difetto il ritmo risulta un po' lento, ma non mi è dispiaciuto il fatto di raccontare un istant-love come uno slow brun. Il rapporto tra Ben e Jessica è sia intenso che esilarante. Dialoghi frizzanti, fanno da sfondo a vicende travolgenti. Bello il rapporto di Ben con i suoi amici, tra cui Sam, il fratello di Jessica, uno sfacciato rubacuori, con massime profonde sempre pronte per risolvere una situazione spinosa. Non vedo l'ora di leggere gli altri libri della serie e incontrare ancora tutti i personaggi che hanno animato questa storia.
Una lettura consigliata per iniziare questo nuovo anno.

This book is a great start to such a wonderful series. Erin Nicholas has a knack for creating characters that are believable and relatable yet somehow larger than life. When I started reading, I couldn't seem to stop.
My favorite moment has to be the bar scene where Jess first goes to rescue Ben. I don't want to say too much for those of you who haven't read it yet, but you'll know it when you get there.
If you like romance that's realistic then you're going to love this book. It will definitely get you hooked to read the rest of them.

Love this series and this book!! When Dr Ben Torres punches a patient and gets suspended, well director of the ER Jessica Bradford finds him and does some babysitting to keep him out of trouble. The only problem is that they both have this problem that each are unaware of..they lust for each other!! Can both these two do gooders put aside their cape long enough to enjoy life and each other!! Definitely a problem that they both have in common!! You will enjoy this easy but lustful and emotional book!! Don't hesitate to read and devour it and you will want to roll into the next hot book!!

La trama di questo libro mi aveva incuriosito parecchio, essendo del campo ospedaliero non vedevo l’ora di conoscere il famoso Ben Torres, chirurgo traumatologo. Ero curiosa e avevo grandi aspettative, ma spesso le nostre rimangono solo delle illusioni e tutto si è dimostrato deludente.
Ben e Jessica sono colleghi di lavoro, lei è un’infermiera professionale, coordina il pronto soccorso e gestisce tutte le operazioni affinché niente vada storto. È rispettata e stimata da tutti, mette in riga chiunque senza arroganza o presunzione. Tra i colleghi che cooperano insieme a lei c è lui, Ben Torres, bello come non mai, dispotico, arrogante, deciso e un eccellente medico. Tutti lo stimano, soprattutto Jessica si reputa fortunata ad averlo in squadra fin quando il carattere ribelle e impulsivo di Ben sarà la causa della sua sospensione dal lavoro. Panico, come si può perdere un elemento così importante in un ospedale? Ecco che Sam, paramedico e fratello di Jessica, cercherà in tutti i modi di riportarlo a lavoro e, tra le soluzioni papabili, ci sarà anche sua sorella. Ben è single e amante delle belle donne e Jessica… beh è una bella donna. Devo essere sincera, non ho ben compreso l’intenzione di Sam, ma un fratello maggiore che manda letteralmente sua sorella nelle braccia di un suo amico con il solo intento di aiutarlo con le “maniere dolci”, l’ho trovato molto surreale. Fratelli maggiori fatevi avanti e dite la vostra!

Il rapporto fra Ben e Jessica crescerà, e in un attimo (ma davvero un attimo) le loro chiacchierate saranno frutto di provocazioni e parole maliziose, facendo trapelare un’attrazione reciproca che va avanti da tempo ma che nessuno dei due aveva il coraggio di rivelare. Ho trovato certe scene davvero inutili e senza un senso, fuori luogo e senza un significato, come se fossero state messe lì giusto per tappare dei buchi o riempire nero su bianco. Per farvi capire, sono rimasta un po’ folgorata in una delle scene iniziali: il protagonista che si rende conto di aver perso il lavoro e bacia la protagonista, l’infermiera stupenda di fronte a sé, solo perché “tanto ormai ho perso tutto, non ho niente da perdere”. Ooookay! o.O
Comunque sia, entrambi si conosceranno e scopriranno le realtà alternative del ‘altro, la vita al di fuori dell’ospedale. Perché Ben vuole lasciare il suo lavoro, cosa lo spinge a fare questa scelta? E invece Jessica perché ha bisogno di risolvere tutti i problemi senza lasciare spazio agli altri? Cosa la spinge così tanto vicino alla sua vocazione? Due persone completamente diverse, ma che riescono a completarsi a vicenda, tra battibecchi e fughe amorose, crescerà un sentimento fortissimo difficile da trattenere, impossibile da dimenticare.
Partendo dal presupposto che odio i libri in terza persona, ma questo è un gusto personale, sono andata oltre perché non mi fermo mai alle apparenze e perché mi è capitato di dare votazioni alte a libri scritti in terza persona grazie alla bravura dell’autrice. Stavolta non è andata così perché non sono riuscita a trovare interessante l’andamento di questa storia; per lo più, mi perdevo continuamente perché non sapevo di chi stessero parlando. Era tutto molto impersonale e la confusione aumentava sempre di più. Due protagonisti con caratterizzazione scarsa, nonostante entrambi abbiano due passati pesanti alle spalle, ma per i quali non sono riuscita a provare emozioni e empatia. Ho trovato interessante ciò che fa Jessica al di fuori dell’ospedale e a quel punto ero più attratta da quella piccola trama secondaria anziché dalla principale. La scrittura è molto semplice, ritmo abbastanza scorrevole, ma con presenza di refusi frequenti. La prima parte mi è piaciuta abbastanza, infatti l’ho letta velocemente perché ero curiosa di sapere cosa sarebbe successo, poi ho continuato a scorrere le pagine con la stessa rapidità, ma per un motivo diverso: non vedevo l’ora di finirlo. Peccato perché dalla trama poteva davvero uscire un capolavoro, ma personalmente ho trovato tutto molto scontato, banale e poco avvincente.

I picked this book up because it was a freebie on my Kindle! Boy am I glad that I did. Erin Nicholas is a new author for me so I wasn't sure what to expect. I could not put this book down and before I was even finished reading this one I downloaded the next two! This book has just the right amount of romance, sex, laugh out loud funny and seriousness. This was a perfect read for a cold snowy day. Did a nice job warming me up!

Erin Nicholas is a hidden gem. The Bradford family series surrounds the lives of a close-knit group of paramedics. Both her characters and her storylines are believable and well-developed. She's managed to create a world that I'd love to be a part of. I'm happy to have found this series. I've since read all of Erin's books and enjoyed them all. Erin is a relatively new author on the scene and is one I'll be watching out for.
