Terrible. It's trailing on the end of the vampire trend and introduces nothing new. The story is stale and uninteresting, superficial and slow. Basically, the author took the characters from Twilight (plain chick + vampirey stalker guy who saves her life) and stuck them in a generic vampire hunter romance. All of this is not helped by the mediocre writing, where the author uses childish dialogue such as "'You're mine now and I'm gonna do whatever I want with you, and he can't do anything about it!' he cackled." Oh, and dear author: it's okay to use a few naughty words sometimes. These aren't little kids. Generally speaking, a sixteen year old in a life-or-death situation is going to use something a little stronger than "darn!"

Now, on to details as to why this sucked so much!

For one thing, the characters are seriously lacking in depth and originality. Julia Parker might as well be Bella Swan for all anyone cares: neither of them have any personality, both of them are stalked by their "boyfriends" who save their lives multiple times, neither are strong heroines, both are described as perfectly normal and yet they manage to have boys drooling all over them. Shut up.
Plus, after she meets this totally cool guy who saves her life, Julia goes and blabs to everyone in high school, and becomes instantly popular. Everyone wants to talk to her. No, Brenda Pandos. That's not how it works. If people want to hear a story (which in this case, no one would care in real life) they tend to go to the gossip mill instead. Maybe the author was just sadly in the "out" crowd as a youth and is expressing her deep-seated desire to be "popular" with a bunch of high school kids.
Not to mention, Julia is disgustingly wimpy. She's afraid of everything, including empty woods at night. Empty woods near her house. And her sprained ankle? Oh baby, she milks that minor injury like a squirt-happy heifer.

Speaking of Julia's fear in the woods, the forest is supposed to evoke some sort of suspenseful, frightening response even before the character feels any real heebie-jeebies. So while Pandos is busy writing about how terrifying the woods are, the reader is sitting there thinking, "why is this supposed to be scary? is the main character ten?" This pattern continues throughout the book, like when Julia "fights" with her friends and family. No real drama, no reason for anyone to be worked up and yet we're supposed to feel like we're watching a goddamn tragedy.

Now for the romance, which is supposed to be the driving force of the novel. I love romance in my books, as long as it's done well. This wasn't. It was a typical Twilight-esque romance: Girl is in danger, boy saves girl, boy is gorgeous, girl has no redeeming qualities, boy stalks girl, boy and girl fall in love within half an hour. There, you don't even need to read the book.
But, really. Come on. If you meet a guy for maybe half an hour, you're not in love. Stop bitching about how much you miss him and how your "heart feels ripped to shreds" and how your whole life is "torn like [your] heart." < -- actual quotes, corniness and all. You don't need multiple mother effing heart-to-hearts with ten different people before you "move on and say goodbye." Good lord. Nor should you continue to cling to someone who is downright RUDE to you. Girls, let that be a lesson to you: if Mr Cutie is an asshole to you, dump him in the dirt and move on to someone else right then and there. Don't waste time moping about Mr Cute (who you don't even know!) not being Mr Right. That is flat out a waste of time.

Now finally, one more thing. Julia can apparently sense how people are feeling, like a watered-down Sookie Stackhouse from Dead to the World and so on. This adds absolutely nothing to the story, and in fact just detracts from it. Why? Because the author half-assedly decided to throw in a random character trait to... I don't know, make it more paranormal? Because vampires just weren't supernatural enough. Oh, there's a random werecat dispensing sage advice- think Solembum from Eragon, because Pandos wanted to make the book even more generic.
Now, let's stack this against The Fantasy Novelist's Exam by Rinkworks to see how bad this really is. For those of you who don't know, The Fantasy Novelist's Exam is described as a guide to prevent awful novels from being written. From its page:
Ever since J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis created the worlds of Middle Earth and Narnia, it seems like every windbag off the street thinks he can write great, original fantasy, too. The problem is that most of this "great, original fantasy" is actually poor, derivative fantasy. Frankly, we're sick of it, so we've compiled a list of rip-off tip-offs in the form of an exam. We think anybody considering writing a fantasy novel should be required to take this exam first. Answering "yes" to any one question results in failure and means that the prospective novel should be abandoned at once.

7. Does your story revolve around an ancient prophecy about "The One" who will save the world and everybody and all the forces of good? Yes
8. Does your novel contain a character whose sole purpose is to show up at random plot points and dispense information? Yes
14. How about "a wise, mystical sage who refuses to give away plot details for his own personal, mysterious reasons"? Yes
16. Do any of your female characters exist solely to be captured and rescued? Yes.
21. How about "a half-elf torn between his human and elven heritage"? Yes, if you replace 'elf' with 'vampire.'
Sad. Just sad. I wish it was easier to return kindle content, because I want my 99 cents back.

Ok, I'm going to keep this simple because I don't think this book real deserves any sort of review whether it's good or bad......... yup it was that bad! But i feel as a consumer who was hoping for a new different kick ass fantasy book, with awesome suspense and action, i was thoroughly taken for a ride!

The girl only just met the guy for 30 SECONDS and she spent frickin weeks moping over him!!!! How is that a good role model for teen girls of today? 'hey girls, go into the woods at night and wait for a tall dark stranger to come and find you then mope and drool over him for weeks even if he showed no interest in you what so ever and is possibly dangerous' I mean i know it's ment to be 'love at first sight and is all good and awesome' and I love romance as much as the next person... but come on! show some felt self respect or dignity woman!! YOU MET HIM FOR 30 SECONDS!!!
I never felt like i could empathize with the main character because she had no depth at all to her character and she completely ditched all friends and family for a fit guy!!!
and last I thought her problems where just over dramatic and boring and there was no originality to the story what so ever!!!!!
*and breaths*
So in a nut shell, sorry to people who did like it but, i didn't.

“Likeable Heroine Battles Vampires”

I’ve chatted with friendly author Brenda Pandos online and I’ve wanted to read her Talisman series for quite some time. When I won The Sapphire Talisman on a Goodreads giveaway, it was my cue to bump up the series on my to-be-read list!

The Emerald Talisman is the first book, featuring Julia, a sixteen year-old blonde living in northern California. Her life is rather normal except for the unexplained death of her mother when Julia was young. Julia reportedly witnessed the event but doesn’t remember what happened.

Her normal life shifts into the paranormal when a strong young man rescues her from peril. Nicholas seems so calming and warm that Julia falls into despair when he doesn’t return her calls. At one point Nicholas is downright cold to her and at others he simply avoids her, though she can still feel his longing for her. Talk about mixed signals! Luckily Julia meets a kind boy named Phil, who just moved into town. It seems like their friendship might help her deal with the loss of Nicholas in her life. However, Phil gets attacked, which sets into motion a threatening vampire triangle with Nicholas, Phil, and Julia—-will Julia survive?

I really like Julia. Her special ability to read others’ emotions has likely advanced her thoughtfulness and wisdom beyond her years. I wonder if losing her mother at a young age is what made her sensitivity to others blossom. When Julia faces dangerous situations, she comes across as being brave without appearing idiotic. I also enjoyed her relationships with her brother and father. It’s nice to see a brother who might lightly tease her but isn’t such an antagonist like in many other stories. And her father seems to be striving to be a good parent despite his grief and absence due to work travel.

I think the writing improves as the story progresses. There are too many high school friends to keep track of in the beginning, and it takes a while to get into the story. I'm glad we find out what happened with Julia's mother, and I'm curious to meet Nicholas' father. I give The Emerald Talisman 3.5 stars. I’m really looking forward to The Sapphire Talisman, where I hope we learn more about Nicholas and about the talisman.

The Emerald Talisman had been on my to read list for a couple of years now. It’s a long list of hundreds of books I want to read but never find the time. Thankfully Brenda recently released the book as an audio and I was able to sign up for the blog tour.
I’m a huge audio book fan. I listen to them often and usually the audio books I listen to are ones that have been on my to read list for too long and end up being books I really enjoy. The Emerald Talisman was no exception. I’m grateful I finally got around to this one.
First off this book is clean. Most of the paranormal young adult novel I’ve read recently are far from clean but this one didn’t have anything really objectionable in it and I could listen to it with my kids around without worrying about it. The main character came across as very naive and childlike to me. I am not sure if my view of her would have been different if I read the book or if I got this impression due to the narrator.
I didn’t read the book summary before starting this one so I really didn’t know what to expect. Julia’s instant obsession with Nicholas was a little much for me and I found myself rolling my eyes at her thought process but it also reminded me of what it was like to be young, in love and unsure of yourself. I liked how the story and mystery unfolded slowly throughout the book. I am not a fan of book summaries so I usually don’t read them because they give too much away. Not having read the book summary I honestly didn’t know what Nicholas was until I was a good way into the book. I think it was much better to read it not knowing and wondering.
Hopefully the rest of the series will make an appearance on audio soon.

First of all, while I may catch some harsh feedback from this first comment, I have to say that The Emerald Talisman is nothing like Twilight. If you like vampire stories, then yes, you will like this book. Julia Parker is not an average teenager. She has the ability to read people’s emotions. After losing her mother and being raised by a father who is almost never there, she happens to be a well-rounded, responsible girl. She works, she has friends, she has a social life and when the going gets tough, so does Julia.
Julia nearly falls to her death after walking through a park at night when her car breaks down, big mistake, she even admits. When she is rescued by Nicholas, sure, she swoons. Who wouldn’t? But even though he is in her thoughts and quickly in her heart, she doesn’t obsess over him.
When students start disappearing, Julia figures out the reasons why faster than anyone else, thanks to her empathic gift.
This story was a little slow in starting, but that’s okay. You spend some time getting to know Julia, the kind of person she is. You get to meet a well rounded cast of characters that know when to stay in the background and when they come back to the limelight, they don’t overshadow the story. I liked this book and couldn’t wait to get to the next in the series. They were absolutely quick reads and very enjoyable.

My General Rating: 3.5

____________________________________

If sometime you literally asked yourself how would be the life of a possible vampire hunter who has no idea this beings exist and the help of "one of them" to train her, The Emerald Talisman main character could be a good example. The Emerald Talisman narrates the story of Julia, a simple girl with a singular talent. Julia's life goes out normally until one night when she is attacked by X creature and handsome Nicholas saves her life. This is where our main character's eye opener to a world surrounded by supernatural forces and even her mother's disappearance will be one of the puzzle's pieces. There's two aspects I've really liked from the story. One is that in the story, vampires are more of a force than a constant. Second, the singular characteristics that Pandos grants her vampires are interesting and could define it as a crossover between Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Twilight. My favorite part is ENIGMA's appearance since it gives the story another supernatural touch and separates it from other story's comparisons. The title has an important meaning and role in the story. The end is satisfactory and leaves the possibility for more Julia and Nicholas adventures. The question would be "Would we see story sidekicks?". I hope we do. The Emerald Talisman is a new promising story for a new vampire saga.

Random Note: Even do there’s a few misspells is not distracting at all.

Quickie review!

Ummm what to say… I seem to be struggling with my reviews this week!

Emerald Talisman was a good start to a promising new series. It has an interesting plot and premise. I thought the action scenes were the most engaging part of the book. The had a great pace and description.

I did have some struggles with this book it took me a while to get use to the writing style and connect with it. I think for me it missed witty characters and I need that in a story.

With that all being said I will be definitely reading The Sapphire Talisman.

I absolutely love the cover and because I am a cover freak I will definitely will go into a book blind if I am in love with the exterior. Sadly, that didn't work for me this time. Don't get me wrong because I did like the book, as in it was better than just okay but not by a lot. The beginning was a bit slow reading for me, which makes it harder for me to really dig in. After awhile though, I was happy that the pace picked up for me.

The characters didn't really resonate with me, so that was a problem with the overall likeability of the book. I will say, though, that Ms. Pandos set up the story well enough that the last part of the book I was really into it and what was going to happen, so I think I'll most likely read book 2. I can't help myself because I think it's going to be better than book 1.

The Emerald Talisman was an enchanting, stimulating, and eloquently written book. Brenda introduced a promising vampire series that would interest fans of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. Julia, the female protagonist was quirky yet endearing. Her ability to feel emotions from others curiously drew my attention. The story opened up with Julia's car breaking down. Now, instead of taking the safe walk to her home, she decides to naively take a short cut through the woods. The suspense and fear through the woods was perfectly executed. I felt every emotion Julia experienced. There, she was pursued by a dark entity whose hunger was overwhelming. Fortunately, for her sake, Nicholas, the infamous vampire slayer, showed up. I really liked his personality and the aspect of him being half vampire and half human was refreshing. The only part that annoyed me about Julia was how her feelings for Nicholas escalated quickly. I didn't feel it was realistic and Nicholas was not yet swoon worthy for me to understand.

Throughout the book, she was easily persuaded by prey and I wish she'd use her intelligence to fluctuate her decisions. But, Julia does show signs of strength, especially towards the end. I have a feeling she will grow into a very important figure as the saga progresses. Nicholas and his determination to keep her safe was admirable. His voice of reason balanced her lack of better judgment. Another part of the book I enjoyed was the mystery behind Julia's mother's disappearance. As it slowly unraveled, I became more involved and yearned to learn more about the situation. I look forward to the sequel, which I am sure will reveal the key to all my questions. I am excited to see where Brenda will take Nicholas and Julia's relationship and also all the creatures of the night that will get thrown in their way!

If you like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer then you will like this book. This is a fast pace, gripping, need to hurry and turn to the next page to find out what happened kind of book. Brenda gave us a fresh, new, and exciting world about a vampire hunter and vampires.

Julia can sense and feel emotions from people around her. Her friends and family doesn't know she has this ability and wants to keep it that way. Nicholas is a half vampire/ half human with super natural ability and a special talisman. Oh. And he hunts and kills vampires. He has also been secretly guarding Julia since she was a little girl after her mother disappeared.

Julia and Nicholas met when he saved her from a dangerous incident. After that the story really picks up when they venture into a relationship. Julia learns what really happens to her mother and gets into it thick with vampires.

The ending will keep you sated but still wanting more. Overall, this book is exciting, fulfilling, and original. I highly recommend this to everyone.

I got this free from Amazon several years ago. I recently found it on my to-read list and thought I'd give it a try. I do believe it is still free.

Julia, is a high school student in the Los Angeles area. She lives with her older brother and father. Julia's mother disappeared many years ago. There is a lot of mystery that surrounds her disappearance but it's a taboo subject, so no one in the family talks about it.

After her car breaks down, she decides to travel through the woods to get home, rather than go to the road to a local gas station or something. Of course her cell phone is dead. It is dark by the time she reaches the woods and shortly after she finds she is running away from a possible attack. She falls off a cliff but grabs a branch and is able to hang on. Suddenly, a man shows up and rescues her. This man takes her home and urges her to make better choices.

Julia, can read minds...she can feel others emotions and sense their thoughts. While in the woods, she felt someone but can't explain those intense feelings. Don't count on the author to help you out on this.

In the weeks that follow the attack, Julia thinks about Nicholas and fantasizes about him. Then she meets the new guy in town. Phil, is friendly and cute. He offers Julia friendship but after he is randomly attacked at the bonfire, Julia feels a nervous anxiety around him but she doesn't know why. Then Nicholas comes back into the picture...after a month of silence. Julia seems to be in love with any Y chromosome who pays a little attention to her.

With Nicholas in the picture, Julia comes into danger but she doesn't know what kind of danger she is in for. Will Nicholas save her again, or be the key for her death? Ohhh...Nicholas is supposed to be this big mystery guy. Hot, right? No, he was just as odd as Julia.

After the attack, Julia begins to romanticize her story. She day dreams about Nicholas and she thinks about him often but with a hero complex. The way the story was written, the attack and the save are not romantic. I didn't find Nicolas particularly hot but, Julia's age shines through with her thoughts on what happened after the fact, versus what the author has written. Her expectations of Nicolas become very idealistic.

"Maybe he would take me to homecoming. Visions of me and him dancing on the floor with the "popular" guys looking on made me smile."

Julia, is a push over OR dumb as a door nail. She can be convinced of anything with little to no effort. Her friend, Sam, asks her to go to a bonfire and Julia doesn't want to go. The author vaguely hints at a guilt trip but really this was just a ploy to continue the story line. I felt the execution of this bonfire to be poorly written. I felt like this part of the story could have been written differently. Such as: Julia could have gone to work and left early then decided to go to the bonfire just in time to see and talk to Phil. This way, it puts Julia in a better light and not such a push over and easily swayed. This part of her bothered me. She had zero back bone.

The book has inconsistencies. After the attack, it is said that Julia has gashes all down her one side but later on the book says she has bumps and bruises that aren't serious. She sneaks out of her house one night but then states she doesn't know how she will get past her dad without being noticed. Nicholas says he can't be around Julia during the day but takes her on an all day date to the beach. The necklace that Nicholas keeps around his neck has the ability to help and save him but he gives it to Julia. It "chooses" her but why?, how? what does it all mean?

The author gives clues in the book to what Julia faces but at the time, I felt the wording was very strange and I didn't know what it meant. The paranormal aspects in this book are very odd. I really didn't find it interesting. I don't think the author has anything new to add to the genre and I didn't like how they were written.

Overall, this book felt very inconsistent. It bothered me that Nicholas was late to the story. He was there in the beginning to save Julia, but doesn't appear again until many chapters later.
There was little to no explanation about Julia's reasoning as to why she did things. It was stated she felt apprehension but she never listened. Then there wasn't much of a consequence for not listening. The author eluded to a protecting element but then this was never explained. The book just seems like a big jumble of information with no explanation as to why things are the way they are. Because of the lack of information, I became frustrated with the story. Julia's feelings and emotions were all over the place. I really couldn't connect with her because the author never explained her emotions. The author never explained anything. It felt like this whole book was a waist of time because it didn't make any sense. So many questions. Ugh! The whole story was hot mess.
Julia's world makes little to no sense to me and I don't plan on continuing in the series to find out more. This book was just a jumble of inconsistencies and crazy decisions that frustrated me to no end. I wouldn't recommend this book. I can't say that it was enjoyable. Even the romance was flat.

Reviewed @ Girls Without a Bookshelf.

Saying this book tested my patience does not even begin to cover it; it truly exhausted every ounce of whatever patience there was in me. While I admit I was intrigued about its premise at first, and was thoroughly excited at having the book in my hands, eventually I had to get rid of it or risk insanity.

For the record, I actually did not finish the book. So whether or not you'd take my review as accurate, I'll leave it for you to decide. However, note that I did try to read as much of this book as I could possibly endure. But it just was not possible to finish the book.

The protagonist, Julia, narrates the story and this pretty much guaranteed it's downfall for me. She's a whiny character, one that comes across as stupid more than naive. She's also rather weak in character and I was especially put off with her incessant pining after Nicholas.

So the guy heroically saves her and she falls head over heels in love at first sight, granted. But when Nicholas fails to show up after his saving her, she acts as if her life has suddenly lost its purpose. She goes through the five stages of grief, as though she has lost a lover. She begins blaming him, acting as if Nicholas owed her a lengthy explanation for promising to show up and somehow failing to do so (sure, a promise is a promise - but when a stranger promised something to you, do you honestly fall into a depression when it's broken? Aren't you more likely to be surprised if that stranger actually fulfilled a promised visit?). She also actually gets into the point where she tells herself to finally 'move on' from Nicholas. Move on? As if they ever had a relationship in the first place? It was just too pathetic.

Of course a good mystery and even more mysterious hero is always welcomed in my book - but as I waited for the mystery to unravel, there was nothing else to sustain the plot other than Julia's never-ending pining for Nicholas. Not only did this lack of subplot resulted in the dragging of the storyline, it also made it boring, and Julia's narrative practically killed it for me. Being annoyed to death by this character overshadowed my reading experience so much I can hardly comment on the book's writing and structure.

So sadly, despite my initial enthusiasm, Emerald Talisman turned out to be rather unbearable

January 2012: Did a quick re-read to refresh my memory before starting the last book. Enjoyed it, but was a little turned off by Julia's quick obsession with Nicholas. Otherwise a fun read.

September 2011: I guess I enjoyed this one. I’m still wavering between my rating. I really wanted to like it, and for the most part I did. I guess the one thing that bothered me most was the relationship between Julia and Nicholas. It just wasn’t that believable for me. I just can’t believe Julie would be so into a guy that she only interacted with for about an hour. They kind of had a conversation and the rest of the book we hear about how much she wants to be with him and only him. Even with her special abilities it was hard to believe. But, if I overlook the “love-at-first-sight” angle, I did enjoy the story. I liked the different take on vampires and their origins. After reading reviews for the next two books I’m actually pretty curious to see what happens. I thought it was pretty well written, but felt the dialog at times was a little lacking. I guess any vampire book nowadays is really going to remind me of Twilight. If you like vampire stories then you will probably enjoy this one.

(As of today, Sept 20, 2011, The Emerald Talisman is free on Amazon Kindle).

The Emerald Talisman is a wonderful take on Vampires, and anyone who knows me, knows I can't get enough of this paranorm.

This was a fast paced book that will grip you, a captivating world filled with suspenseful mystery and a sweet romance.
Julia's irrational feeling towards Nicholas was something she couldn't help, from the minute he saved her life she felt an overwhelming connection that made her feel safe and alive.
I remember what it was like to be sixteen and have those crazy feeling about someone I barely even knew surface. So I found her character to be very realistic, and while I did find the plot and romance a bit rushed, it also made sense why she was portrayed that way. Julia is naive, but I also found real strength in her.

Over all, I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading the sequel.
Special thanks to Brenda Pandos for sending me a copy. This was terrific!

This was one of the first freebies I picked up for my Kindle a couple of years ago. I have so many freebies I got and have never got round to reading them, so I now have a policy if I can make it past the first 10-15% its a keeper. Review will contain some ranty spoilers.

The first 10-15% wasn't actually that bad. The main character was as dull as dry toast but the writing was okay, no obvious glaring typos or anything. Then after that it rapidly went down hill. It had the biggest YA cliche of all - a missing parent. Insta-love. A stupid heroine. And fast became a Twilight rip off.

To be fair, though, the love interest Nicholas was actually a fairly interesting character. In spite of the old "I'm watching over you to protect you but I'm really dangerous you don't want to get involved with me". While the sensible part of my brain is screaming THIS IS STALKERY AND WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS!!! I can actually see the appeal of having someone strong and handsome and other worldly looking out for you.

After the scene in the cave I was pretty much done. I skimmed the rest. The main character Julia was just so...bland and dull.

Plus is takes so long for things to start happening it was boring. And still falls along the line of in spite of obvious danger Julia does dumb things and continues to be obsessively in love with Nicholas. Who went from being mildly interesting to dull and annoying by this point. After the cliff/caves thing I was done. I skimmed the rest. And deleted it from my kindle.

Not a series I will be continuing.

The Emerald Talisman starts out with a bang and never slows down. Julia was a fascinating character who immediately runs into trouble when something dangerous comes after her in the woods. To make things more interesting Julia has a "gift" of sensing emotions. The first thing she notices is the overwhelming hunger coming from her predator. This seems odd to Julia because she typically doesn't sense emotions from animals so that only means one thing; it's human. Out of nowhere Nicholas comes to save the day and this starts the whirlwind of their relationship, exposed secrets, and dramatic conclusions for Julia.

Julia and Nicholas were amazingly written characters but the story was not simply centered around them as most books are. Brenda incorporates more interesting characters as Julia's friends and classmates. This kept the story flowing smoothly even without the constant presence of Nicholas. I found this to be one of my favorite aspects of the story.

As things progress we dive into the drama of Julia's life as she learns about the truth that surrounds her, but we also get a glimpse into her past and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of her mother. Julia is a caring individual who is close to her family and easy to relate to. She seems to become a strong young lady as the story progresses. In many ways she is the typical teenage girl but her gift lets her in on some of the secrets people keep hidden by emotions. Nicholas is a vampire hunter and quite mysterious in many ways. One constant with him is his protectiveness of Julia. I look forward to learning more about him and his past.

Brenda did an incredible job of keeping the story moving and keeping me, as the reader, interested. I enjoyed the complex plot, strong characters, and fast paced action throughout. By the end of the story we have answers to many of the key questions but some remain that will be answered in the sequel, The Sapphire Talisman.

4.5 stars

The Quick and the Dirty...a refreshing new take on vampires and vampire slayers.

Why I was tempted to read this...Well the blurb reeled me in, always looking for a new vampire book!

Cover thoughts...it's pretty cool, not exactly how I imagined the necklace in my mind tho.

Romance Meter...Well of course! Julia and Nicholas hit is off right from the beginning and the romance started bubbling.

Character and Plot...Julia has a talent, she is an empath meaning she can feel others emotions. When a risky walk home after her car breaks down leads her to meeting Nicholas and him saving her from some "thing" in the woods, she starts asking more questions to find out what she is actually up against. This story rocks along very easily and is pretty hard to put down, the plot flows nicely and the characters are engaging. PLUS you have evil vampire vs good, you know that is always fun!

The Ending...The ending was good...left me wanting more and dying to know questions that were left unanswered, hopefully there will be a sequel in the works!

I really couldn’t decide what to rate The Emerald Talisman. 2.5 stars I guess. I kept going back and forth between it’s ok and I kind of like it. It reminded me a bit of Twilight (think gorgeous guy saves helpless girl multiple times despite her stupidity, stalks her and drives really fast), the TV series Moonlight (think immortal guy saves child from vampire and secretly watches her grow up and then falls in love with her), with a bit of Blade (think half vampire day-walker who hunts evil vampires) thrown in there as well.

There were some things that I found myself rolling my eyes at. The main character had the annoying habit of thinking up something in her head and suddenly believing it was fact. Her expectations where ridiculous; she tells herself that she has to move on from someone that she only met once and was never in a relationship with. And she suffered from teenage girl, fall for any guy who gives her attention syndrome.

I’m pretty sure I’ve read enough and will not be continuing on with this series.

I'm sorry I tried. I tried sooo hard because this book had a lot of good reviews. i got halfway through this book and then i couldn't any more.
I mean the main character, Julia (STOP CRYIN ALREADY!!! SHEESH) she's so whiny, and clingy ( even though she always meets the 'love' interest for about 1 hour at most.) Any one who is able to feel others' emotions should be ready to deal with any situation or at least that's how I feel. I couldn't really connect with her even though we are the same age!!. I kept rolling my eyes at her over dramatic reactions. I mean the half of the book I read was all about her asking "why me?" and moping around about the boys she only met for not even a full freaking day!!!! I'm really sorry if I ruined this book for anybody its just I REALLY REALLY wanted to love this book(it seemed more interesting from the blurb) but it just wasn't happening.Over all, all I can say is that the main character needs to stop moping and whining about guys she doesn't know who don't know her either!!!

This was one of those awesome books that grabbed my attention from the very beginning! Julia, the main character, can sense emotions, so when she finds herself alone in a forest at night and suddenly senses savage blood lust, you can imagine the stone cold fear that consumes her!

When some major life (or death) choices were thrown in Julia's path, I found myself having a hard time deciding which I would choose! The realistic way in which Brenda handled that choice is commendable. Rarely do authors allow their characters to consider two such different paths in life!

Brenda's take on Vampires is refreshing and exciting. I can't wait for the sequel to come out! This is a must read! Also, follow Brenda on Twitter! She's a sweetie!

Interesting plot and premise. The pace and storyline is captivating. Writing style was exceptional, especially with her wording. Characters are relatable and realistic. I wouldn’t give it an A+ on originality. It did have a Buffy Meet Twilight feel to it. HOWEVER, that is not a bad thing in my opinion. The twists Ms. Pandos throws in make it unique A promising start to a series. I can not wait to read the next book!

This book was a great book for anyone in love with vampires. There's a lot of action, and that's what I liked most. Though fast paced, it's also a leisure story. The beginning alone is captivating, from there it's all uphill. Great for a Sunday afternoon spent reading! (Just don't read it too late at night!)

I had to look up when I got this book and while I knew it has been a few years; to see it was more than 5 years it was a bit surprising.
This book was one of the first Kindle freebies I got and the cover was never really that appealing for me to start reading I guess.
The book was slow and the first half of it seemed almost boring watching the main character going trough her daily life. The second half of the book starts introducing the supernatural elements at a fast pace. This difference between first half and the second makes the book seem slow and boring and might make some readers give up...
Second part of the book gives a good insight into backstory of the supernatural elements and those are well made. I'm a bit ambivalent towards the main characters since they are very much erratic in their YA decisions.

With book one of the Talisman Series, Pandos introduces a cast in which while some characters may seem rather “everyday”, there are those who bring a new slant to the YA Paranormal genre.

Julia Parker is regular teenage girl with the same regular teenage trials and tribulations of her peers. Or, at least that’s what she wants the rest of the world to believe. Julia is an Empath. Ever since the day her mother disappeared and she was mysteriously returned to the doorstep of her family home, Julia has been able to “read” the emotions of everyone around her. While these empathic abilities are most certainly an important piece of the story, Pandos has expertly conveyed the impact of Julia’s “gift” without going to far over the top. It is made known that this ability is rather intrusive and somewhat hinders Julia’s ability to peacefully enjoy life, but is not made into such a big part of the story that it overshadows the rest of the tale.

As a YA heroine, Julia Parker ROCKS! She’s sensitive to others feelings, responsible, surprisingly courageous in the face of danger and, through all the crap she’s had to deal with lately, has kept a mature and level head. Maybe Julia’s maturity is a result of her empathy, or maybe it’s because she’s grown up in a home full of love with a wonderful father and a really great big brother. But, whatever the reason, Julia is a character I would have no compunction introducing to my “tween” daughter!

In Nicholas, readers are presented with a refreshing twist from the everyday vampire. You see, Nicholas is half vampire and half human making him unique in that he has the strength, ability and cunning of a vamp yet he can walk in the sun, eats regular food and has retained his soul and humanity. Talk about the best of both worlds!!

Nicholas. Oh sweet, brave, devoted Nicholas. You are a knight in shinning amour and young readers will daydream about you like none other. Imagine a boy so devoted to protecting you that he follows you through the years. He never wavers, never strays from his quest, and most unfortunately, has taken an interminable amount of time to make himself known. But, the time has come and the connection is undeniable. No matter how much he believed he must keep his distance to protect you, it simply won’t do. And, lucky for Julia, staying away has become impossible!

The immediate connection between Julia and Nicholas was a little hard for this reader to believe, at first. Yes, I think any girl would be completely and immensely thankful to any “knight in shinning armor” who was brave enough to save her life. But, to become so instantly and irrevocably attached that she instantly thinks in terms of undying love and happy ever after?…I am not so sure that works for me. Yes, teenage girls are prone to swooning and I am sure we all experienced that high school crush that left us sighing and daydreaming for days, but let’s be honest here. Can any of us truly say that we’ve ever felt a love and devotion so instantaneous that we felt totally betrayed and utterly heartbroken because he didn’t call?

Now, the above is not to say that Julia and Nicholas’ relationship didn’t eventually level out and progress into a more believable scenario. In fact, readers will find that about 2 thirds of the way through there is a significant change to the tone of the relationship. Not just a change in the relationship, but a significant “shift” to the entire story that this reader could actually feel the transition. I can’t put my finger on the exact moment, or even the specific reason for the sensation, but it is there…Perhaps more noticeable in retrospect, but definitely there…I would venture to guess that there are some of you who might know exactly what I am talking about and maybe one of you could shed some light? Then again, I could be off my rocker!

Within the pages Brenda Pandos’ debut, readers will find a solid foundation for the rest of the Talisman Series. Complete with a unique twist to today’s vampire story and characters that are not only entirely believable, but worm their way straight to your heart, Pandos has created a true YA Paranormal Romance that readers both young and old can really enjoy!

Book Opening:

"What kind of secret superpower would you want Julia?"
Startled out of my usual daydream I shifted my focus to Katie's chestnut-colored eyes, concerned about her choice of subject.

"Why? I asked, trying to sound natural. The Emerald Talisman (Volume 1)

Notable Scene:

"A crack of a tree limb and falling foliage forced me to open my eyes. A tree fell right above my head, frightened birds flew out of the leaves and a cackle of laughter echoed across the ravine – extreme happiness mingled with the loathing hate. Selfishly, I prayed the fight would end in my favor and quickly.

But then suddenly I heard something that sounded like a sizzling firework and felt someone’s surprise turned into fear… then nothing. The evil vanished. I breathed a sigh of relief too soon as the branch shifted in the earth next to me.

“Hurry!” I cried, but it was too late.

I screamed as I fell, knowing I was about to die." –Pg 30

With an eerie plot and intriguing spin on the vampire myth, THE EMERALD ENCHANTMENT was an enjoyable paranormal romance. Though at times the book lost a little steam, the mix of well-defined characters and bold cliffhanger ending continued to reel me back in.

The first chapter of THE EMERALD TALISMAN begins with no less than six characters speaking and the mention of at least three more in passing conversation. In my opinion, this is way too many people to be throwing at the reader in the first few pages. I was so sidetracked with trying to keep Julia's friends all straight, that I couldn't concentrate on the actual storyline. Fortunately, the book kicks in soon after. When Julia runs out of gas late one evening on a deserted highway, that's when I knew things were going to get really good. Much like Julia felt when she decided to take that shortcut through the forest, my heart was in my throat and I couldn't read fast enough! Brenda Pandos' bloodthirsty stalkers were truly frightening and an absolute thrill to cross paths with.

Julia was a teenager who could read emotions. (Picture a Sookie Stackhouse who reads feelings instead of thoughts). She was quirky and lovable, but I felt a lot of her decisions to be downright irrational. My biggest concern, however, was in regards to the extreme and immediate feelings of love that she felt for Nicholas. I like my romances to evolve realistically rather than hit with the force of a runaway freight train and I'm afraid this one took off way too fast for me. At times Julia frustrated me how self-consumed she was in her feelings toward him.

The many mysteries surrounding the death of Julia's mother and the circumstances surrounding Julia's own near-attack were intriguing and kept me on my toes. There was a lot of time and effort put into the construction of this story and Brenda Pandos' effort definitely shone through. I absolutely loved Nicholas, the mysterious boy Julia meets in the forest and was inexplicably drawn to. His unwavering determination to protect and watch over Julia fascinated me. I had to know why he wore the emerald talisman around his neck, why he was there the night when she was in danger, and when the secrets he was hiding would be revealed.

Despite a few reservations, THE EMERALD ENCHANTMENT was an engaging book; one with danger and excitement lurking behind every corner. Julia has an important role to play in events to come and I'm interested in where the sequel will take her next. THE SAPPHIRE TALISMAN, the second book in the series, releases in December 2010.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed reading this book! Brenda Pandos did a wonderful job creating a fresh and exciting new vampire world. I loved the characters in this story (good and evil) and the suspense had me turning pages way too late for a few nights! I found Julia (the main character) very interesting. She was an empath, meaning that she could sense and feel the emotions of those around her. Her gift definitely came in handy on more than one occasion in the book, but remained a secret to everyone. Her family doesn't even know that she possesses this gift. She also seems to be a magnet for vampires- which sucks (bad pun I know:D)- unless you have your own super hot half vampire/half human vamp slayer as your knight in shining armor! Nicholas is the gorgeous, yet dangerous, bad boy that Julia falls for. At the beginning of the book she finds herself in a pretty hopeless situation that Nicholas saves her from. They spend a little time together that evening and then he disappears for quite awhile. Julia is immediately consumed with thoughts of him. She finds herself completely in love with him, despite the fact that she only spent a few hours with him. I found this a little confusing, but as I read on, I began to understand the connection between Julia and Nicholas better. Both of them had mysteries in their lives that I really wanted the answers to. Julia had the mystery of her mother's disappearance, her empathic gift, and the mysterious message given to her by a fortune teller concerning her destiny. Nicholas' character didn't lack in the mystery department either! As the only known half vamp/half human in the world, and the only vampire slayer, he is one of a kind. That definitely holds some major intrigue! I enjoyed learning about the emerald talisman that he wore, and about the reasons behind his connection to Julia. His character is really cool, calm, and collected in the face of danger and is quite a force to be reckoned with! Did I mention that he is completely gorgeous too? Oh yes... totally swoon-worthy!

The book moved at a good pace and the ending was fantastic! The stage was set up perfectly for another volume in the series. There was enough resolution at the end to be satisifying, yet the unanswered questions make me pine for the sequel! Some of the things that I am anxious to learn more about include the history of Nicholas' parents (especially his vampire father), Julia's true destiny in the fight against the vampires, and the course that Julia and Nicholas' relationship will take after the events at the end of the book (hint.hint... Brenda PLEASE cover these in the sequel!:D) I really did love this book and would recommend it to all YA readers that enjoy good vamp fiction!

Where do I begin??? I'm now adding this book to my all-time favorites. I simply loved it, read it in less then a day. Why do I adore it so much? I don't know. I think Twilight might have met it's match. I'm surprised there's not more publicity about this book. I can definitely see this book being quickly optioned for film rights. Not one part of the story did I find uninteresting. It was fast paced and the writing was beautifully done. It was clear, easy imagery with well brought out emotions. Also guess what, the author has never written much before this. Can you believe that?? I find her work very well written, not amerturish.

The characters were well developed and like-able. Especially Julia, I really connected with her. I found many similarities between her and me, and I enjoyed reading from her perspective. Her thoughts were really strong and well written, making her a realistic character. She wasn't annoying. A lot of the situations she got into and her actions were very understandable. If a guy hadn't visited, when he said he would, I'd be pissed off as well. I was actually wondering through the first half of the book where Nicholas was. I found the author did a great job of creating and writing about her. Brenda Pandos definitely connected with her inner teenager.

Nicholas and Phil were the sexiest characters of the novel. Sadly one of them get's down-casted, by the other. The plot was simple and very obvious. Both boys trying to fight over the girls affection. One good and the other bad. Which then leaves the readers in a conflicted situation cause you can't help but love both. Though you can probably guess who wins her heart in the end. Nicholas was protective in a sweet-sort-of-way, and his reasoning was very sincere. But like all other paranormal YA boys, he is a bit of a stalker. I was seriously waiting, throughout the novel, for Julia to ask if he watches her while she sleeps. I think I just finally realized that most paranormal YA boys do that, why not Nicholas as well. Phil was the nice kid turned bad boy in the book. At times I really felt my heart drawn to him.

What I thought... could of been more improved was Julia's power. I felt that it wasn't really brought to the readers attention enough. I wanted to know more, and maybe in the sequel we will learn more about her gift.

Overall this book will definitely be on the top 5 of 2010. I loved it and I'm so excited for it's sequel, The Sapphire Talisman to come out. I will be anxiously awaking it release date. If you haven't read this book yet then I highly recommend that you do.

The Emerald Talisman was definitely a great read, but I couldn't help but to feel a bit disappointed by the end. I do have to say that Brenda Pandos's writing is great and just got better as the book came to a close.

The story starts off with suspense and it never ends! Julia is attacked by a vampire, obviously an evil one, and she's utterly confused as to how someone was able to save her. I actually really loved Julia, she was sweet and knew how to get herself into some bad situations, but just as easily get herself out. I liked that she used her brain and wasn't a total weakling. She can also read minds and hear what people are thinking, which I think is awesome, but she wished it would go away!

We also meet a boy named Nicholas and Julia doesn't know why, but she has a connection with him and can't seem to drop it. Nicholas also might have answers to her mother's disappearance, which doesn't help her situation. We also meet Phil, the new kid at school and he seems interested in Julia and she thinks that maybe she's found a way to rid her feelings for Nicholas.

I could not choose between these boys. They both have charm, in their own ways, and they were kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I mean who doesn't like to read about hot vampire boys? ;)

Of course, things always get out of control and Pandos knows how to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I just wanted to keep reading to find out how it was all going to play out — which is a bit suprising, by the way.

I was disappointed that all I got out of the entire novel were questions GALORE in my head. Only a few were answered and I just felt that there could've have been a few answered with just a few details more. To me, there were too many things being brought up and then immediately put on the back-burner.

But, with that said I don't want potential readers to get discouraged and not read this book. I definitely believe it is a must read and I hope you guys will pick it up! I am really looking forward to reading The Sapphire Talisman, book 2 of the Talisman series, to get my questions answered!
