Created in partnership with Asia Society Museum in conjunction with a major retrospective, this is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of art superstar Yoshitomo Nara. It assembles 20 years worth of paintings, sculptures, and drawings that map the evolution of one of the most influential and internationally renowned artists working today. The book and exhibition will draw connections between Nara’s work and the sensibilities of youth subcultures worldwide, focusing on themes of alienation and rebellion, particularly in relation to rock and punk music, the inspiration and subject of many of Nara’s works. Featuring artworks that have never before been exhibited, this is the book Nara’s legion of devoted followers have been waiting for.
Praise for Yoshimoto Nara :
"Nara's work has an irresistible appeal well represented here." -- Publishers Weekly
Truly a treasure to own. I keep it open on a new page each day to appreciate. The box that it comes in is itself a delight reminiscent of the "doors" installation in the exhibit at the Asia Society that spawned the creation of this book. In fact, it offers much more than the exhibit itself did and gives a better look at his work, especially the small sketches done on graph paper, than Lullaby Supermarket did.
A phenomenally beautiful book-as-object, with a slipcase cut out to reveal vignettes from the covers, great printing and paper and design, and of course the wonderful art of Yoshitomo Nara (unless you don't like him, in which case why would you be looking at this book?). Four interesting essays and an interview, plus captions, make up the text. This is one I return to sometimes, and it never disappoints.
What a beautiful book! I own three of Yoshitomo Nara's art book and I love this the best. I can't wait to go to L.A. to see his exhibition. It's all ready to go and waiting for the visitors (since July...).
