Granite Lake Wolves, Book 1

Robyn Maxwell doesn't care that her brother has to cancel out on their backcountry ski trip. She can do it alone. The fact she's deaf doesn't make her survival skills any weaker. The chance to get away from it all and relax in the Yukon wilderness is just what she's been craving.

Meeting wilderness guide Keil at the cabin starts cravings of another kind. Keil's one hot hunk of ripped, tasty male. Now she has to deal with raging hormones as well as strange questions about wolves and mates and challenges to the death.

Keil was trying for a nice reflective retreat before challenging for the Alpha position of his Alaskan pack. He wasn't planning on meeting the woman destined to be his mate, or finding out she's not aware she has the genes of a wolf.

Between dealing with his accident-prone younger brother, a deaf mate with an attitude and an impending duel to the death, his week--and his bed--is suddenly full.

Far from the relaxing getaway any of them had in mind...

Warning:

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "talking with your hands". Includes dangerous use of sarcasm and hot nookie in a remote wilderness sauna.

I was drawn to this novel by the rather "daring" factor that the author had chosen a disabled protagonist - in this case, a deaf girl. Aside from that, it was a pretty disappointing read, going swiftly downhill. The relationships between Robyn and the wolf brothers was too sudden, especially her attraction to Kail - there was no doubt in her mind, not even any sort of inner cautionary voice - no, the moment she saw him she literally turned into an uninhibited sex fiend. As for his poor brother... TJ's sole presence in the book was to be made a mockery of and treated as if he were some sort of clowning duffus to be gotten ridden of as soon as things got a little hot and heavy between the two protagonists. And even then - when her brother finds out the truth - it turns out he knew all along! And don't get me started on the sex scenes! Actually, do get me started. They were NOT SEXY. Do we really need descriptions of body parts? And oh, he's so well hung - well what a surprise - aren't all male protagonists? And I hate, hate, hate the word "milked". Please. No. Not when you're discussing sex. It's just... gross.

This novel read like a pale shadow of a Nalini Singh book. The concepts were almost the same, the sexual tension similar (although Arend did not draw that out nearly enough for it to be particularly steamy). But, of course, with one major difference. Singh is a good author.

And sexual tension not withstanding - there was no actual action tension either. The characters hardly seemed to be at risk for their life, and I think this was just someone's wolf fantasy.

Oh, and what happened to the big fight? The actual ritualistic fight for alpha wolf. It just never happened - the story just finished! 13% from the end of the ebook, I was quite surprised.

Arend, perhaps your work gets better as you go along. But I shan't be bothering to find out.

First few chapters were very promising... but overall the story really needed to be longer. I think, with a bit more, this book could've been really interesting. I mean, a wolf that's deaf? Sounds awesome! But really, it lacked worldbuilding and I felt like the MC's lacked chemistry. Also, why was the heroine so angry all the time? 🤨

For the past couple of years I have avoided het romance like the plague. I am seriously sick of the female leads that are so popular today; they are either blushing virgins or complete bitches. I mean really, when did the term “strong female lead” get changed to “raging cuntmuffin”? I didn’t get the memo, and some of these dragon ladies make me want to cover the book in salt then set it aflame. You can never be too cautious when dealing with hell spawns, so a dash of purification with your exorcism can’t hurt, right?

Now I was in between books, so I thought I would go check to see what Amazon had for recommendations for me. They have brought to my attention quite a few books I am not sure I would have found otherwise. What I wasn’t expecting was to find a het romance book there; I have been buying a lot of mm romances so Amazons algorithm should have been tossing urban fantasy or mm in my direction. Amazon now had my curiosity piqued, not only was the cover pretty, the book sounded interesting.

In reading the sample I got to know the main character, Robyn, enough to know that she was going to be a fun. It also gave me enough time to know that this wasn’t a typical romance, the main character was deaf, and didn’t think of herself as ugly, just kind of boring with her brown hair, brown eyes, and perpetually tan body.

This leads me to my issues with the cover, my first impression was that it was pretty, that is until I read the main characters description. Recently I read a blog post where publishers have been “white washing” the characters on the cover of books. This makes me sad, because this book is doing the same thing. Robyn is of dark hair, and complexion like I said above and the woman on the cover is a pale woman with dirty blond hair. I know this is not the authors fault, and will not rate the book with this in mind; it was just an irritation I needed to vent on.

Now I have to go on about my love for the sex scenes in this book. I give the author mad props for using words real people would use, and not euphemisms for everything. I have had my fill of both male and female body parts likened to fabric, flowers, and metal. Though I do think there is one instance that the word steel is used, but having it in here only once or twice is not big thing when most romance has two or more of the three in every sex scene.

So I really enjoyed this book, and reading TJ’s story in book three.

Warning: This review contains discussion of sexual topics.

Wolf Signs is a suprisingly fun book with great characters and unique choices for world building. It definitely has its flaws, but I was surprised to find that I actually enjoyed it. If you’re okay with reading spicy scenes, then I recommend reading this one since it’s free on most eBooks stores.

This book had great representation. All of the characters are indigenous and Robyn is deaf. The deaf representation could’ve been handled better though. The struggle of communicating without knowing sign language was sort of “cured” by the paranormal aspects in this book and I wasn’t a huge fan of that.

I loved the characters in this book. Robyn, Keil, TJ, and Tad were all really interesting characters to read about. Robyn was strong and she didn’t let her disability get in the way of her taking charge of a situation. Keil was described to be this perfect “alpha male,” but what I loved most about him was his kindness and his patience. He didn’t force Robyn to do anything that she didn’t want to do and he took his time with getting to know her. TJ and Tad were both funny side characters that made the story entertaining in the midst of all the smutt.

My major issue with this book is how every part of the worldbuilding and the werewolf lore was hypersexualized. It didn’t feel like there was even one werewolf element to the book that wasn’t inherently sexual. I actually laughed at some of the sexual stuff because it was so bad. For example, wolf’s smelling abilites allowed them to get turned on by a simple scent, wolves don’t know if they’re mates until they have sex, and some werewolves can’t turn into a wolf until they have sex with another wolf. I get having smutt in books since some people really like that, but toning the sexualization of the world building down a little bit would’ve drastically improved this book for me.

Blah........... not one I'd recommend

This book was offered as a freebie, which I really appreciate, so I decided to give it a try. It did have potential but upon completion I wasn’t impressed. Here's my breakdown:

The pros:
* I liked how the heroine was hearing impaired - it added to her personality
* The sex was pretty steamy - on a scale 1-10 I'd give it a 7
* Offered as a freebie
* I liked the cover

The cons:
* Insta-love
* Since it was a short I felt like it was missing much depth - both with the characters and storyline
* Everything about this read just felt rushed
* A book virgin - that’s normally a deal breaker for me - especially being that she was 26 years old (I think) But thankfully her character never came across as pathetic
* It had a very juvenile feel to it - their banter back and forth and the dialogue made the characters feel more like high school kids rather than adults in mid to late 20s.

Overall, it could have been a pretty good book but I just found it to be lacking in far too many areas. This won't be a series I personally continue.

A very lighthearted and laid-back story.
There is humor. Not the kind that makes you do a belly laugh, but it does make you grin often.

The main characters are very likable.

The story is very well written. No typos/editing errors of any kind, no repetitiveness or any of those annoying things that drive you nuts when you are reading.

Both the story and the writing flows easy and sweet.

My problem is the lack of intensity.
There is very little passion or excitement. I mean the type that gets your heart pumping.

There is a very beautiful adult love making scene and a somewhat quick fight scene.

This was a quick insta-love shifter romance. Robyn doesn't know she's a wolf shifter but as soon as Keil catches her scent he knows that she's wolf and that she's his mate. This was a fast paced and quick read. It was interesting to read this authur's take on shifters and pack life.

In Robyn's shoes, I think I definitely would have freaked a lot more than she did, but finding out shifters exist and that she is one, didn't much faze her. It was sweet how loving and affectionate Keil is towards her and the neat trick about communicating telepathically was pretty cool. The idea that sharing bodily fluids can trigger dormant shifter genes in a person was a unique twist, that worked out for Robyn because Keil was her mate but I'm not sure how it will play out with her brother, him only being a half blood.

I didn't think I was a prude but it was weird that when Robyn asked to see the change from man to wolf, instead of showing her himself, Keil was okay with volunteering his brother strip naked in front of his h. There's a bit of action but mostly this centers around Robyn and Keil and a lot of sweet moments between mates.

Memorable Moment:
The night Keil offers comfort to Robyn when she wakes with an ear ache. I loved how patient and selfless he was. He knew she was his mate and he didn't fight it. He was humbled and grateful he found her and did everything in his power to reassure her and care for her. There was no pressure, it was just pure unadulterated affection. He was really a sweetheart.

Would I recommend?
For a quickie read, yes. Being greedy, I wouldn't have minded this being a bit longer (the whole story plays out in a couple of weeks). The alpha challenge didn't play out like I expected and might feel a bit anticlimactic but it was still a good read.

One of the things I liked about this story was how the heroine, Robyn, was deaf. She's feisty, spunky and a total alpha female. I even liked Keil, even though it was mentioned a lot that he was such a strong alpha but I never saw that. What I did see were sweet moments in which Robyn and Keil got to know each other and realized they have a lot in common.

Pretty much the only thing wrong with this story was the length. I have a lot of questions about the pack and especially about what's going to happen to Robyn and Keil now. She obviously has to move to Alaska but does she want to? How with the pack accept her? Is she going to use her voice more? Is she going to get a new job?

Anyway, I liked the story. It's quick and cute and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I loved it, it was hot and so fun to read.
Finally a h that's strong, funny and has sass, Robyn was perfect. Keil was a predictable alpha but it was TJ and his goofiness that made me laugh out loud and continue to grin like an idiot. I really wished this book was longer which is something i never do.

I tend to avoid novelettes but after being disappointed by another book, this story was the perfect escapist feel-good pick-me-up—enjoyable so long as one keeps in mind the following: "destined mate/instant love" means near-instant sex; at less than 100 pages, the plot points have to arise and be resolved at hyper-speed; and the story is not intended to be a heavy, serious paranormal/urban fantasy. It is definitely "erotica" but considering that it's a Samhain product, I found the sex scene pretty tame and almost secondary to the overall story.

The story is well-written and includes a fairly well-developed storyline for its short length (with enough tidbits for future books in this series). The characters, for the most part, are likable and memorable in that each deviated in some way from shifter/were stereotypes. I especially loved the walking disaster (in human form) that was TJ, the brother. In contrast, I tried to like Robyn more but for some reason, I found her annoying at times, and I just couldn't get over the deaf-person-going-backcountry-alone-is-not-TSTL hurdle. (Oh yeah, and that deaf person is a lone female staying at a communal cabin.)

On the flip side, the alpha challenge? BOO! HISS! OK, maybe I'm a little bloodthirsty but it was described as "to the death" (*gasp*) and it turned out to be...not. Given how it occurred, the end result jumped the rails in favor of the story's funnier side. I also wouldn't have minded something at the end to address, however briefly, how much Robyn's adoptive parents knew about her wolf heritage (since her adoptive brother did).

This was free when I downloaded it, the cover is GORGEOUS and the heroine is deaf. I thought I was getting a serious novel but it descended all too quickly into 'insta-lust' and sex. The 'deafness' aspect was glossed over and the characters were shallow, stupid and thoroughly awful.

I dnf'd as soon as I realised where it was heading.

This was a freebie offer that peaked my interest because of the deaf MC female. I wanted to tick the MC is Disabled Box of my Diversity Reads Challenge.

This was not well written or entertaining enough to finish and it’s certainly not going on a list with my name on it.

I really enjoyed the werewolf details of this story. I quite enjoyed the pack dynamics and other details such as the she's my mate thing. I liked the werewolves accidently letting the cat out of the bag. I would have enjoyed it even more had the book been longer with a more involved plot. The writing was well done. I did think that she copped out a bit by having the issue of the deafness dealt with so easily. Mind reading! Poofta! Still the writing was good, the sex scenes okay but I myself think the author would be better served with more plot and werewolfishness and less sex. Any book can have sex scenes but the werewolf idea had chops here. And that's why I like shifter books.

I didn't mind the heroine being so accepting here because somehow the writing made sense although I've read novellas where I was disgusted at how easily the heroine accepted the existence of mythical creatures. I think one of the reasons is that I felt what plot there was was pretty tight. Not a lot of unnecessary things happened. I will definitely try further books in the series.

Thanks melissaB for loaning it to me.

This freebie was a quick read that featured a deaf heroine who didn't know she was wolf. I like books with disabled characters, it's something you don't see all the time, and I thought the author handled it well. There was insta-lust due to the fact that the MCs are mates. It was rushed and predictable but still enjoyable. If you want a quick read with interesting H/h, this is a good choice.

A deaf heroine who doesn't know that the reason she's always felt like she doesn't fit in isn't because she's deaf. it's because she's a werewolf, and an alpha to boot.

A hero who is alpha as can be and completely blind-sided by the naked woman who stumbles out of the sauna. But it's not because she's naked. It's because she's his mate.

And the only way to trigger her first transformation? It's sex with her mate ;)

I enjoyed the story and definitely want to read more of the Granite Lake Wolves. Ms. Arend has a fun sense of humor that shows through in her writing and her characters.

When Robyn Maxwell brother gives her the news that he is unable to accompany her on their yearly camping trip to the Yukon’s – Robyn did not let that deter her. With the stubbornness that is so apart of her she carry on with her plan and is soon in the mountain as it was and all set to enjoy the time she has there.

Something is different on this trip however as someone has added a new feature to the landscape – and she was so going to make use of it.

Everything comes at a price and soon Robyn finds herself locking horn with Keil, wilderness guide and a totally hot stuff as well. Other than the fact that this was her time their she finds herself extraordinarily drawn to Keil and he to her as well.

Robyn comes with a careful sign, not that you can tell from how independent and stubborn she is – but she is deaf and she is one feisty woman. Keil is surprise to find Robyn in the wilderness more so by the fact that she is deaf and a wolf at that. He knows immediately that Robyn is his mate and he has no choice but to act on the impulse that are cursing through his veins..

Keil trip to the mountain was for a nice relaxing retreat before the fight of his life to become pack alpha – now he not only have an accident prone brother to deal with, but also a deaf mate who is little more that a cub. One thing Keil was certain of – he was not going down without the fight of his life.

Another first in a series book for me from Ms. Arend and WOLF SIGNS was a quick and sweet read. WOLF SIGNS more or less introduces us to what I hop will be a thrilling series.

The entire book takes place in the wilderness on the Yukon’s and from Robyn and Keil’s meeting to the loving to the little bit of angst that develop between the two it is done in an insulated setting which helps a big deal in the impact of the story.

I like the fact that Robyn was deaf, it is rarely that I read a shifter book with a protags that has a disability. Robyn’s character was well written and despite her limitation she was a strong and determined personality. This comes in very handy because Keil was no wilting flower.

He knew what he wanted and he went out with stealth and a gritty determination to be the winner in all things that he does.

From the loving to the fighting, I was engaged in this book and as limited as the book was on details of Keil’s pack and his life, I was suitably pleased with what I read and I await the next saga in the Granite Lake Wolves series.

"Wolf Signs" had the unique quality for what could have been a truly exceptional read. However, the brevity got in the way of fully developing an amazing story.

Robyn Maxwell will not be deterred from taking her skiing trip to Granite Lake when her brother has to bow out for his job at the last minute. She will not allow him to use her deafness against her as some sort of sign of weakness. She is not weak and she will not be swayed by any of his arguments. So, off she goes.

Robyn is truly impressed by all of the upgrades that have been installed at the cabins: a sauna and a shower, wow! So, she decides that she will take advantage of the sauna. However, when she goes to enter the sauna butt naked and flashes two skiers, she takes out her knife in order to protect herself. Keil and his brother TJ realize that they have frightened the beautiful girl; but when they attempt to explain to her that they mean her no harm she becomes even more agitated. So, Keil leaves her a note under the door and backs off.

When Robyn reads Keil's note she emerges and lets him and his brother know that she misunderstood their intentions. They begin communicating by using tablets and reading lips. Then, Keil discovers something interesting. Not only can he smell Robyn's wolf nature, he also can sense that she is his mate. Now all he has to do is explain all of this to Robyn.

Robyn isn't about to believe all of Keil's clearly deranged ideas but when he and his brother shift into werewolves they now have her attention. Almost immediately, Keil and Robyn get together and start their honeymoon. This is where I had a major problem. It is not often that the herione in a book is deaf and this book posed the perfect opportunity to delve into this world in greater depth. I would have enjoyed it so much better if the author had taken the time to do a little more world building, character development and setting us up for the antagonist. What could have been a spectacular read turned into an okay read for me.

Although I enjoyed this book, I will not be continuing on with the series. I am tired of okay books and want to real only the really good ones. This had the potential but just did not make it. Sorry, Ms. Arend I truly do not mean to offend.

I read a version of this ages ago when it was free from Amazon and thinking about it actually it's the book that stirred my interest in this authors work. So I was very happy to discover that not only is it being re-released but that the original book has been expanded.
What stood out to me both then and now was the fact that Robyn is deaf and I haven't read a lot of romance that features characters with that disability. I loved that she uses ASL to such good effect although understood Robyn's frustration when her brother Tad wasn't around to translate for her. Still she's undeterred and turns to her trusty notepad instead and with two strangers showing up there's a lot to communicate which quickly escalates the story. Yes Robyn can lip read and unfortunately for Keil and his brother TJ their private conversations might not be so private after all!
So essentially Robyn has no idea of her heritage and as full blood wolves TJ and Keil can smell exactly what she is which adds humour although it does leave Robyn kind of scratching her head at times. Add in the fact that Keil realises Robyn is his mate and the misunderstandings just keep on coming. Yes there's sexy times but I thought it fitted in with Robyn's personality as she's not shy and retiring but very much a go for it, strong female . I liked seeing Keil try to control his natural urges whilst struggling with his wolf but of course his challenges just add to the fun. Plus the author gives us the seriously irreverent and downright clumsy TJ!
I really enjoyed visiting these characters again as they navigate through their shocks and surprises plus there's action as Keil is in the middle of a challenge to be his Packs new Alpha. With its mixture of romance , humour and one very bright and courageous heroine this story gave me all the happy feels I need to encourage me to continue this journey with the wolves of Granite Lake.
A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirement for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion

This is my first shifter book beside the Twilight series, and I have to say I enjoyed it very much!! I was already a huge Vivian Arend fan, so it wasn’t too hard to convince me to try this book. She has made me a fan of a new, to me, genre. This is a really great quick read.

Robyn Maxwell has a big ski trip planned, but at the last minute her brother, Tad, cancels on her. She decides that she is going with or without him. She is a strong independent woman, and her survival skills are not weakened in the least bit by the fact that she is deaf. Her biggest worry is that she will eat all 6450 calories of the cheesecake she had gotten for her and Tad to enjoy together. The chance to get out of the city and relax in the Yukon wilderness is one thing she can’t pass up.

Keil and his brother TJ had a nice relaxing weekend planned, before Keil is scheduled to challenge for the Alpha position in his Alaskan Pack. With a fight to the death hanging over his head and watching out for his accident prone brother, the last thing he expected was to find his mate out in the wilderness. OR to have to explain to her that she is a wolf in the first place. Language barriers aside these two have some smoking hot chemistry and sex!! HOLY SMOKES!!

I loved this book. It was one of those where it makes you wish you would meet this smoking hot man, with abs for days, and have him tell you that you are his mate. Sign me up for some of that!! This book has some great funny banter between everyone. I really loved the sibling like interactions between Robyn and TJ, and then once the wolf telepathy starts between Robyn and Keil that amps up the hotness level for me. This is really a great book! I highly recommend y’all checking this one out!!

Having not read enough books about werewolves, I picked up a copy of Vivian Arend’s Wolf Signs as a free download a while back. Book 1 of her Granite Lake Wolves series was thoroughly entertaining and I just loved these wolves. The book is set in Canada’s rugged north, in Granite Lake Yukon. The area is isolated and the perfect place for a wolf pack to hang out.

Wolf Signs is one of the few books I’ve read where the heroine has a disability. Robyn is deaf and communicates either by ASL or by writing. When Robyn goes to the Granite Lake cabin for some peaceful R & R, she is surprised by some unexpected visitors. TJ and Keil from the Alaska pack arrive at the cabin, also looking for some peace and quiet before Keil has to fight a challenge for the leadership of his pack. Unfortunately, they arrive while Robyn had just stepped out of the cabin buck naked to pick up some fresh snow.

Misunderstandings and panic abound, and not only because Robyn can’t hear what the men are saying. When the men tell her to approach as wolf, she chalks it up to an unfamiliar American slang term. Another complication occurs when Keil realizes that Robyn is his mate. Problem – Robyn is not even aware of any wolfy heritage.

There’s lots of indoor and outdoor action in this book. Avalanches, fight scenes, and an incredibly hot shower and sauna scene…I can’t wait to read the next book in the series - Wolf Flight.

Wolf Signs has been featured as a Badass Book Reviews Hidden Gem - Canada eh? edition book here.

This is one of those premises that I would love to see tackled by another writer.

Deaf heroine? Oooh, sounds interesting. Deaf heroine is a werewolf? Now I'm more intrigued. She meets him in the wilds of Alaska with only his brother around? While he is in the midst of challenging for pack Alpha? A challenge that might result in his death? Well hell now I'm totally hooked and need to read it.

Of course at about 150 pages it's not a story one can sink their teeth into.

I am seriously going to spoil the book so read no further if you plan on reading the book.
Deaf heroine? Well it's okay because as mates they can speak telepathically so it only factors in for about three seconds.
Deaf heroine is a werewolf and doesn't know it? She makes them change into a wolf and then believes them right away and is cool with it..
The Alaska setting was nice but again, at only 150 pages nothing really comes from it.
The challenge for pack Alpha? Well being unmated mates (the mating is not complete) means all other unmated males are interested in fucking her. Which leads to her being pinned down by a 'bad guy' and licked on the neck. She seems unperturbed by this but I didn't appreciate the threat of sexual violence the book held.
And this leads me to a big offense in this book. Robyn said/implied TWICE that she was not okay with him going for her ass and to stay away. I do NOT GIVE A SHIT if she ended up liking it, if your mate says stay out of my butt you to NOT surprise her with a finger up the ass!

This book basically left me wanting to read something similar but OH SO different. A book I'll actually be happy to finish.

Robyn knew she was adopted, but she didn’t know her biological parents had been werewolves. When a childhood virus caused her to totally lose her hearing, her adoptive family decided she had suffered enough trauma. It wasn’t until a surprise guest barged in on her ski trip and claimed her as mate that she got her first clue.

This is just the perfect little sexy read to tide you over until you’re ready for a full length novel. Charming funny characters, witty dialogue, and praise be, a heroine who isn’t an idiot. I had not one complaint about Robyn and that is a rare occurrence indeed. I ran across this series quite by accident. I actually won it at Vivian Arend’s blog by asking the same question in the post title. Why haven’t I read this series yet? It is exactly the type of thing I look for. I did not frown or cuss at all when I read this. Do you realize how unusual that is? It was fun and easy, which is exactly what I needed in that point in time.

The hero of the story, Keil (love that name) is a challenging alpha. Need I say more, yum. He teaches Robyn that she doesn’t have to hear to communicate with him (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Robyn and Keil are communicating all over the place and even though they are in Alaska, it is tres hot. Feeling kind of grumpy, blue or just need something fun to spark your day. Try this book, it has way less calories than chocolate.
