Double Play

Rate this book
Play-it-safe book reviewer Amber Nichols is so ready to let loose. Her wild one-night-stand target? Hottie baseball player Heath Donovan. Problem? He's not exactly who she thinks he is!

Team coach Heath takes one look at Amber...and wants to make her melt under his touch. Groupies aren't usually his style...but this sexily distracting woman is different. She should be...because she's not exactly a groupie!

It's a hot, fast fling with incredible sex! Only it's soon coming to an end. Because temporary sex, even the earth-shaking variety, never leads to a home run. Unless these two players can let down their guards in time to let them both win this game....

A delightful novel about Amber Nichols, a book reviewer and Heath Donovan the team coach of the Boston Aces, who are both at a crossroad. Both under a large amount of pressure they decide to have a steamy fling to get through the next couple of days. But as the game comes to the last inning, will they both win what they both want? To win each other?

Cute. Fun. Quick read. I love baseball. I like that the hero is a manager not a player. I like that the heroine is a book-a-holic. (She probably is on Goodreads.com.) The only downside is it was a Boston team. (I am a Yankee fan bigtime.) I still enjoyed it.

Excellent!

Double Play by Joanne Rock is now officially my favorite contemporary romance she has penned to date. She captures my attention right from the beginning and keeps it page after page. Ms. Rocks characters are vibrant and compelling. Her timing is impeccable. She adds the perfect amount of twists and turns which makes it impossible to put her story down even though it means a short night of sleep.

Double Play starts out with Amber Nichols checking out the gorgeous baseball player who is her temporary neighbor. One of her friends, Rochelle, has lent her beach house to Amber for some much needed R&R. Her life has been wicked stressful lately and she really needs the escape. Along with the keys, her friend shares some advice telling her to let loose for a change and go looking for some vacation sex. Rochelle mentions the baseball player next door would make a very nice fling in deed. Normally the cautious side of Amber would scoff at such a suggestion especially since she has no clue how to go about catching any mans interest but she isnt a book reviewer for nothing. Amber plans ahead and brings along a how-to book called The Mating Season. After spying her sexy neighbor, she figures she better start her research and begin using whatever tips it offers. She needs all the help she can get to step outside her comfort zone since her confidence level is zilch due to a horrible recent break-up.

Heath Donovan is more interested in not being recognized than anything else during his two day suspension from his coaching job. Even if the inspiring sight of his gorgeous neighbor in a white sundress has him wishing this was a real vacation and not some punishment from management. But once he literally runs into her later at the local bar he was picking up some take-out at, he begins to have second thoughts. What kind of woman brings a book to a bar? She doesnt look like she would need advice on dating, not with legs like hers. The woman is a mystery. One he would love to solve. Besides he cant walk away from the first woman he has met in a long time that doesnt seem to know him. Being a sports star isnt easy on relationships and he has given up on them.

The summer heat was nothing compared to the steamy temps Heath and Amber create together once they hook up. Heath doesnt want it to end and convinces Amber to prolong their time together. Neither was prepared for the real world crashing in on their fragile relationship. Heaths in the sports spotlight lifestyle worries Amber. She prefers a quiet life filled with her books not loads of female fans eyeing her man. Can she really survive in his world? But she is determined to at least be useful to Heath while they are together. She puts her researching skills to work and has a bunch of advice she thinks will help him do his job. Will Heath be happy with her help or will he be angry with her inferring in his job? Can two such different people make it work or is this truly just a fling for them?

I love how their two lives clash and seem so incompatible. It has me wondering how Ms. Rock will achieve a happily ever after for Heath and Amber. Both deserve some happiness but can their obvious attraction for each other be enough to work through all their differences? Ms. Rock thinks so and she convinces me too! I was enchanted throughout their story and highly recommend reading Double Play.

POV: 3rd Person: Amber, Heath, Diego
Sesuality: Hot

Amber Nichols is an intellectual. She thinks about everything and doesn't do anything wild and crazy. After her boyfriend dumps her and calls her cold in the bedroom, she feels it is time for a small change. Her friend owns a beach house in Nantucket and lets her stay the week. The house next door is owned by the Boston Aces' manager who frequently loans it out to his players for R&R. When the hot baseball player next door comes out of the ocean from his morning swim like an Adonis, Amber thinks a fling might be nice, but figures the baseball player is a bit out of her league.
Heath Donovan is intense about baseball. He is on a forced break for 2 days when he sees Amber next door. He's immediately attracted and plans on letting go a little and relaxing with her.

I liked both Amber and Heath and they had good chemistry. It was a nice little romance, but nothing extra special. It has a secondary storyline with 3rd baseman Diego Estes and his ex-girlfriend from back home in the Dominican Republic. I actually would have liked a little more from the two of them.

Overall, a bit typical of a Blaze with plenty of heat, but not one of the better ones.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read-just what I needed. I loved both characters-their honesty and dialouge. I will have to check out other books by this author.

I enjoyed the romance between Amber and Heath in Double Play. I liked the inclusion of Diego and Jasmine later in the book. It was an interesting look at baseball from the managerial side.
