About the author

Carolyn Haywood was an American writer and illustrator of children’s books, best known for her beloved “Eddie” and “Betsy” series, which captured everyday childhood with warmth and authenticity. Raised in a supportive, middle-class Philadelphia family, she developed her artistic talents early, studying art and later working as a teacher, an experience that inspired her to write for young readers. After formal training in fine arts and travel in Europe, she worked on murals before turning fully to books. Her debut, “B” is for Betsy, appeared in 1939, launching a prolific career built on close observation of children’s lives and feelings, continuing for decades.

Eddie is bummed when he receives the news that his family is moving to another town. Not only will he be leaving his friends behind, but his valuable property too. But Annie Pat has the idea to have a garage sale with all of his stuff and that cheers him up.

From moving to a new house to make new friends, Eddie has quite the adventures. And parents will enjoy the bit about ghosts being real, because isn’t there a ghostwriter for the President?

Content Considerations: gosh and golly are said. Children think a house is probably haunted so talk about ghosts a lot, even putting out a cupcake to try to catch it - there are none. Mentions cigars - an Indian statue is holding several. A boy questions is dad a couple of times.

Eddie is moving away and has to give up his valuable property! It's shocking and painful to see him separated from his stuff. On the other hand, he's finding a lot of new and interesting things at his new house, including a new friend and valuable property of a different sort altogether. A fun read!

When I was a child I would have loved this, but it's a good thing I didn't get a chance to read it and get confused about the truth about bats, and get insufficient clarity about how disrespectful cigar store Indians are. I guess those issues would be good learning opportunities, would inspire good conversations.

My sons really enjoyed this book. They have always loved Eddie, and several of them have a habit of collecting "valuable property" themselves, so they could easily relate to him.

This book took me back to warm childhood memories of my mom reading Carolyn Haywood books to me. Eddie antics kept my boys laughing, and we all need more laughter these days.
