How Sex Changed is a fascinating social, cultural, and medical history of transsexuality in the United States. Joanne Meyerowitz tells a powerful human story about people who had a deep and unshakable desire to transform their bodily sex. In the last century when many challenged the social categories and hierarchies of race, class, and gender, transsexuals questioned biological sex itself, the category that seemed most fundamental and fixed of all.
From early twentieth-century sex experiments in Europe, to the saga of Christine Jorgensen, whose sex-change surgery made headlines in 1952, to today’s growing transgender movement, Meyerowitz gives us the first serious history of transsexuality. She focuses on the stories of transsexual men and women themselves, as well as a large supporting cast of doctors, scientists, journalists, lawyers, judges, feminists, and gay liberationists, as they debated the big questions of medical ethics, nature versus nurture, self and society, and the scope of human rights.
In this story of transsexuality, Meyerowitz shows how new definitions of sex circulated in popular culture, science, medicine, and the law, and she elucidates the tidal shifts in our social, moral, and medical beliefs over the twentieth century, away from sex as an evident biological certainty and toward an understanding of sex as something malleable and complex. Christine Jorgenson: The first trans celebrity in the US
In the early 20th century, most American doctors refused to perform gender confirmation surgeries unless people were intersex, or could make claims to being intersex. Experts still classified trans people in the same group as “homosexuals” (39). All of this changed with the celebrity of Christine Jorgensen – the first person to become widely known in the US for having gender confirmation surgery.
Across the ocean things were different. In 1919 Jewish sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld opened the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin to provide support for LGBTQ people. Dora Richter was the first trans woman to undergo transition surgery at the institute in 1922. In the early 1930s gender confirmation surgeries in Germany reached a peak after the visibility of Danish trans woman Lili Elbe. This vibrant queer and trans legacy is often forgotten because in 1933 nazis destroyed Hirschfeld’s institute, setting his books and files on fire.
In 1952 the New York Daily News broke her story with a front-page headline: “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty.” With pictures before and after, the reporter broadcast a “rare sex-conversion” (62). Originally Jorgensen wanted to live a private life, but she realized the only way she could make a living was by making public appearances. When she flew back to the US from Denmark after her surgery, a large crowd of journalists met her, ignoring the Danish royalty on the same flight as her. She started to perform at night clubs and theaters, selling out venues across the country. The paperback of her memoir Christine Jorgensen: A Personal Autobiography sold almost 450,000 copies (205).
Jorgenson had tried to live “among homosexuals” in New Orleans. She described to reporters that while she shared “a great sympathy” for them, they “disgusted her,” and she knew she “wasn’t one of them” (83). During this period the emerging legitimacy of transsexuality was established by distancing (almost exclusively white and middle class) trans women from gender non-conforming people (especially BIPOC). Doctors would provide trans women with letters authenticating their “surgical change of sex” to show to the police “if picked up for crossdressing” (165), a luxury many racialized gender non-conforming people who were routinely criminalized did not have access to.
Even though the media continued to sensationalize her transition from a masculine soldier to a “blonde bombshell,” Jorgenson actually had a more complicated narration of her own identity. On the record album Christine Jorgensen Reveals when asked if she was a woman Jorgenson replied, “You seem to assume that every person is either a man or a woman…Each person is actually both in varying degrees. I am more of a woman than I am a man.” The idea that all human beings are both male and female became one of her chief talking points in her interviews, writings, and public lectures.
Jorgenson’s visibility pushed American doctors to adopt the term “transsexual” and finally begin to reference the trans research that had been conducted in Europe for decades prior. She became a role model for trans people and her passionate lectures significantly shifted public opinion.
Sex is a Spectrum, Not a Binary: A History of Science
When people seek to justify discrimination against trans people they argue that the fact that people are either male or female is just “science.” This is not only scientifically incorrect, it is also historically inaccurate. In the early 20th century, prominent scientists, scholars, and doctors in Europe began to challenge the sex binary (the idea that all humans were either male or female, and that these were opposite forms). They argued instead that all people were to some degree nonbinary sexed, or bisexual (they used the term ‘bisexual’ to describe what we would call intersex today). This legacy has been disappeared by the gender binary – an ongoing political project that continues to erase any challenge to the binary division of society.
This theory of bisexuality became incredibly popular in Europe in particular. Scientists argued that male and female types did not actually exist in reality: “all males had aspects of the female and all females aspects of the male” (23). With advancements in fields like endocrinology and the discovery that all bodies could produce both testosterone and estrogen, scientists began to argue that “in every human body one could locate and observe a physical mixture of female and male” (23). This body of research became known as the “theory of human bisexuality,” a school of thought that maintained that sex was not a binary, but rather “a scale of infinite gradations” (23)
In 1903 Otto Weininger developed the theory of bisexuality in his book Sex and Character. By 1920 the book had gone through 18 German editions and was translated into English, Italian, Russian, and Polish. Weininger argued for a recognition of a “permanent bisexual condition,” he argued that until then the focus had just been on intersex people who had genitals that did not correspond with the sex binary. He wanted to expand the frame, and argued that all “males and females are like two substances combined in different proportions, but with either element never wholly missing.” Weininger envisioned sex as a spectrum “in which the different degrees grade into each other without break in the series.”
Renowned German physician Magnus Hirschfeld elaborated on this theory. In his book Transvestites (1910) he argued that “absolute representatives of their sex are only abstractions, invented extremes.” In his article “The Intersexual Constitution,” he wrote: “The human is not man or woman, but rather man and woman” (26). This framework allowed Hirschfeld to position queer and trans people who were regarded as pathological minorities as natural variations within a more expansive swath of humanity, “in a world populated by sexual intermediates” (26).
Eventually the idea of human bisexuality travelled to the US. George Henry, an American intellectual no doubt inspired by European scholarship, published Sex Variants (1941), a survey of homosexuality. In it he argues “It is scientifically inaccurate to classify persons as fully male or female.” In his view: all men strayed from the absolute pole of male, and all women from the absolute pole of female. Homosexuals just strayed even farther. Christine Jorgenson, the most famous trans woman in the US at the time, quoted her Danish endocrinologist Christian Hamburger in American Weekly, writing, “It is impossible to fix any definite borderline between what is normal and what is not. A 100 percent man, or a 100 percent woman does not exist. We all have rudiments of dual sex state within us” (101). Jorgenson used this narrative to humanize herself and assert that transsexuality was a version of a universal mixed-sex condition. Later on, endocrinologist Henry Benjamin published “Transvestism and Transsexualism” (1967) arguing for “the infinite diversity of the male-female scale.” He wrote, “it is well known that sex is never one hundred percent ‘male’ or ‘female.’ It is a blend of a complex variety of male-female components” (102).
When people say that the sex binary is grounded in “science” what they mean is “society.” Scientists have historically (and continue to) challenge the idea of binary sex, and instead draw our attention to the reality of sex as a spectrum.
The work and argument themselves were worth the five stars imo, but the inclusion of the picture of the masculinized guinea pigs secures this book as a five star for me.
In How Sex Changed: A History of Transexuality in the United States, Joanne Meyerowitz defines transexuality as well as a once used but now outdated term, transexualism, as “conditions in which people hope to change the bodily characteristics of sex. (The terms apply whether or not the individual has undergone surgery.)” She goes on to say that, in modern usage, “transsexuals are a subset of ‘transgendered’ people, an umbrella term used for those with various forms and degrees of crossgender practices and identiacations. ‘Transgendered’ includes, among others, some people who identify as ‘butch’ or masculine lesbians, as ‘fairies,’ ‘queens,’ or feminine gay men, and as heterosexual crossdressers as well as those who identify as transsexual. The categories are not hermetically sealed, and to a certain extent the boundaries are permeable.” (This book was published in 2002; since then, the term ‘transgendered’ has fallen out of usage, to be replaced by transgender, or simply, trans. In discussing the book, I will use some of the terms that Meyerowitz uses, such as transsexual defined specifically as a trans person who has had, or is seeking, medical intervention toward gender confirmation. I will avoid other terms which in my opinion are now too outdated to be respectful of trans experience, or which define a trans person solely by their type of transition, which Meyerowitz does throughout the book. Readers are therefore cautioned that they may find the terminology is this book to be reductive, outdated, or even traumatic.)
Thus, the book focuses on a particular subset of trans individuals, specifically, those who feel that some degree of medical intervention or body modification is part of satisfying their personal sense of their gender identity. It looks at the history of expression and fulfillment of this desire in the North American context - those who have sought to ‘change their sex,’ and those who have provided, or sometimes withheld, that process. There have always been people who did not feel that the gender assigned to them based on their physical sexual anatomy was who they really were; in some cultures, there have been acceptable social avenues for them to take on the gender they identified as, in others, some have simply lived in discomfort, or found individual ways to ‘pass’ as their true gender. But it has only been in the past hundred years that the idea of devising surgical procedures that could give a person at least a semblance of functioning sexual organs that matched their gender identity has been part of the conversation, and only in the past 50 or so that the techniques have become relatively available to most of those seeking a physical change.
Meyerowitz notes: “ ‘transsexualism,’ defined in part by the request for surgical sex change, did not appear as a medical category until the late 1940s and early 1950s, when doctors David O. Cauldwell and Harry Benjamin first coined and publicized the English term transsexual and when Christine Jorgensen arst appeared in the press.
But the concepts of ‘sex change’ and ‘sex-change surgery’ existed well before the word transsexual entered the medical parlance. In the early twentieth century European scientists began to undertake experiments on ‘sex transformation,’ first on animals and then on humans.”
Much of the early European research and experimentation into what is now referred to as gender confirmation surgery took place in Germany, home of such leading researchers into the psychology and physiology of sex as Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, but this research was abruptly halted when the Nazi party came into power. Still, many individuals had by this time received various kinds of surgical treatment intended to remove unwanted sexual organs and in some cases, create functional vaginas for transexual women.
Many of these techniques had already existed for some time - it was the use of these techniques to help transgender individuals that was new. “Sex-change surgery, then, did not take root when and where it did because of new or unusual medical technology. It took root in part because Germany had a vocal campaign for sexual emancipation. In Berlin, Hirschfeld and others worked to remove the legal and medical obstacles to sexual and gender variance, to enable homosexuals, crossdressers, and those who hoped to change their sex to live their lives as they chose.”
However, while the awareness of surgical possibilities became part of the American sexological landscape, beginning in the early 1930s, most American physicians did not offer the procedures, despite a large number of individuals seeking such surgery. In a few cases, sympathetic surgeons were warned that surgery to remove healthy organs was illegal and could result in serious ramifications if they attempted such procedures.
Meyerowitz devotes several chapters to accounts of early transsexuals whose stories were extensively covered in the media - such women as Christine Jorgensen, Charlotte MacLeod, and Tamara Rees - noting how these stories made the public - including other transgender people who might otherwise have thought themselves alone, the only person with such feelings - aware of trans people and the possibilities of gender confirmation surgery. Unfortunately, publicity did little to distinguish between transvestites and transexuals, or transsexuals and intersex persons seeking surgery to establish their chosen biological sex, nor did it affect the prevailing notion that transsexual women were more akin to gay men than cisgender women. And curiously, there was little interest in the stories of trans men. In fact, most physicians who provided care for trans people believed that trans men were rare, perhaps as few as 10 percent of trans individuals, and some questioned “whether there should be such a diagnosis as ‘transsexualism’ for females.”
Meyerowitz also discusses the development of better surgical techniques over time. Since surgeons mostly saw trans women in their practices, techniques in vaginal construction were a major point of concern. Trans women, however first had to find doctors willing to remove the penis and testicles. This was a major roadblock for some time. Some trans women were so determined to receive confirmation surgery that they attempted to remove their own penes and testicles, leaving doctors with no choice but to complete the desired surgeries. Trans men were less likely to seek out surgery in the early years, perhaps because hormone treatments were sufficient to help most achieve a body they could feel somewhat comfortable in, and phalloplasty techniques at the time were notoriously unsatisfactory. Trans men did seek out mastectomies and hysterectomies, but the reluctance to remove healthy, but unwanted, organs made these surgeries difficult to obtain.
The media focus on transsexuals also brought about a debate, in both the public and professional spheres, over the nature of sex and gender. Among the European sexologists who pioneered gender confirmation surgery, the predominant concept of biological sex was of a universal bisexuality, with individuals located on a spectrum. The transsexual person simply moved along the spectrum, bringing out more if the characteristics associated with the other end of the spectrum. This concept, however, was not common in America, nor did it find much acceptance when proposed.
What came to predominate, and to influence future thinking about sexual identity, was the idea of a psychological sex that was distinct from, though usually in accord with, biological sex. This was the ‘invention’ of gender as a concept.
“In the first half of the twentieth century the theory of human bisexuality had, for some doctors and scientists, redefined sex and legitimated sex-reassignment surgery; in the second half of the century a theory of immutable gender identity came to replace it. In the 1940s and afterward, scientists who studied intersexuality adopted the concept of a deeply rooted sense of “psychological sex.” Some of them suggested that hormones or genes created psychological sex, but others considered it conditioned, imprinted, or learned. In any case, they claimed that no one could change an adult’s psychological sex. Once established, they asserted, the sense of being a man or a woman remained armly entrenched, immune to both psychotherapeutic and medical interventions. They applied this conception of psychological sex—which they later labeled “gender role and orientation” and “gender identity”—first to people with intersexed conditions and then to transsexuals. In this view, the mind—the sense of self—was less malleable than the body.”
However, instead of bringing about an acceptance of surgical intervention to match biological sex to gender, the overall response was to promote the enforcement of rigid standards of gendered behaviour in childhood and support psychotherapy to correct apparent gender non-conforming begaviour, to ensure that the child developed the ‘right’ psychological sex by adulthood. Interestingly enough, the same attitudes prevailed among those who thought that human were to some degree bisexual, in that everyone had some characteristics of the “other” sex - firm education in appropriate gender roles was necessary to minimise the consequences of this bisexuality. Few questioned the necessity of a clear demarkation between male and female. The result was the pathologising of transsexuality as a psychiatric disorder.
Physicians were already gatekeepers, due to their power to offer or withhold available surgical procedures. Pathologising trans people further added to the adversarial relationship developing between doctors who had the technical knowledge to do the surgeries desired, and trans people who sought surgical interventions. Many doctors tried to ‘cure’ their trans clients first. Trans people tried to figure out what they had to say and do to obtain surgery. Many trans women sought to appear hyperfeminine to persuade doctors that there was no way they could live as men. Discussing sex was a dangerous topic - acknowledging desire for men, while appropriate behaviour for a straight trans woman, ran the risk of being diagnosed instead as a gay man, ineligible for surgery. For trans lesbians, the problems were even more difficult, as their sexual orientation could be read as male heterosexuality, and cause for attempting treatment rather than surgery. Many insisted they felt no sexual desire. The need to tailor their life experiences and presentation to convince doctors to approve surgery led to an assumption among doctors that trans people were inherently deceitful. And so the gatekeeping became a major obstacle in the quest of trans people to reshape their bodies to match their identities.
Adding to the problems faced by trans people seeking surgery was the confusion of the medical establishment between transsexuality, transvestitism, and homosexuality. Some felt that trans women were gay men so horrified by their homosexuality that they needed to erase it by becoming women. The debated how to distinguish true trans people from gay people or cross-dressers. Similar discussions developed in the queer community, with various groups - gay men, lesbians, drag queens, heterosexual transvestites - arguing over how trans people should be viewed. One of the difficulties her was that some people who had identified as gay men, drag queens, or butch lesbians, eventually realised that they were in fact trans women and men. Meanwhile, trans peoples’ attempts to define themselves simply as people assigned a gender that was not congruent with their identity were often ignored.
In the 1960s, one consequence of the general ‘sexual revolution’ was a relaxation of defined gender roles, and an openness toward sexual experimentation, that on the one hand, gave many young people the chance to explore androgyny and even living as another gender, and on the other, made it easier for distinct subcultures to emerge, drawing distinctions between those who were gay or lesbian with marked preferences to adopting behaviours associated with another gender, and transexuals who identified as a gender other than the one socially assigned them. Lines of demarkation grew up between those who sought gender confirmation surgeries, and those who identified as ‘fairies’ or ‘butches’. Transsexuality was at least for some distinguished from homosexuality.
Unfortunately, the medical profession was making distinctions based on the path patients had followed to an awareness of their gender identity. They tended to favour the person who had tried to live a conventional life, followed the heterosexual rules for their assigned gender, and lived lives of quiet desperation. Those who came to a desire for gender confirmation surgery through experiences as living as gay men and drag queens, who had been sexually adventurous, were often seen as poor candidates for surgery.
Another consequence of sexual freedom was the eroticisation of trans people. Pornographic images of the feminised bodies of post-surgery trans women began appearing. This was accompanied by erotic images of ‘half-men, half-women’ - trans women who had received hormone treatments and thus had both breasts and a penis. “The sexualization of MTFs went hand in hand with the legalization and commercialization of sexual expression. In this changing sexual climate, the tabloids and pulps presented their stories as less concerned with what the main-stream press dubbed ‘desperately unhappy lives’ and more concerned with titillating adventures.”
Meyerowitz records the low changes in the mainstream medical profession’s attitudes toward gender confirmation surgery, and the work of transgender activists in bringing about greater awareness and acceptance for their situation. Slowly, hospitals began to open gender identity clinics where surgeries were performed on trans men and women, starting with Johns Hopkins in 1965: “By the end of the 1970s more than a thousand transsexuals had undergone surgery at the hands of doctors based at American universities, and fifteen to twenty “major centers” conducted transsexual surgery in the United States.”
Unfortunately, demand far exceeded supply, and the doctors running these clinics set up strict conditions. Again, professional gatekeeping came between the transgender individual and their right to control their own body: “By the end of the 1960s the doctors required psychological evaluation to ascertain that patients had longstanding crossgender identiacation and no severe mental illness. The doctors also wanted patients to live as the other sex and take hormones for a number of months or years before undergoing irreversible surgery. They looked for patients with the intelligence to understand what the surgery could and could not do, and with what they considered realistic plans for the future, especially employment.” Preference was given to those whom doctors felt could most easily ‘pass’ and who presented as ‘quiet’ and highly conventional in their gender expression. Trans lesbians and gay men were unlikely to be approved.
As the availability of surgery grew, legal issues became more important, and courts were increasingly asked to rule on whether a trans person could change their birth certificates and other key documentation from their assigned gender to their true gender. Thanks to the supportive testimony of a number of doctor-advocates, a series of precedents were established where the courts did order the official change of sex on birth certificates, which was the first step to obtaining new documentation of other kinds, and offered a trans individual the ability to provide legal proof of their gender when required. However, where the courts were tending to define gender by reference to genital appearance, governments held onto older ideas and defined gender by (presumed) chromosomal composition. And even the courts provided no hope fir trans people who had not, or could not, have surgery. This was particularly onerous for trans men, for whom phalloplasty remained an unsatisfactory option lacking in both sensation and function.
As the era of liberal sexual freedom that marked the 60s and 70s began to change, Meyerowitz documents shifts in acceptance among both gays and lesbians, and feminists, toward transgender men and women. The prevailing gay culture had adopted the “cult of the macho” and rejected the drag and fairy culture that had supported trans women in transition. At the same time, lesbian culture began to see trans men as butches who were deserting the fold for a safer, moe privileged life. Feminists critiqued trans men and women as reactionaries who reinforced gender stereotypes that the women’s movement was fighting to change, and distrusted trans women who, they believed, had grown up with male privilege and could never be, culturally or psychologically, women, thus establishing the trans-exclusionary (TERF) streak in feminism which remains a problem to this day.
As the conservative 80s set in, the few legal victories trans activists had achieved were rolled back, and existing surgical clinics came under attack from both the right, with a renewed insistence that surgery enabled mental illness and that trans individuals required treatment to restore the ‘proper’ gender identity, and from the left, with a strong critique of the rigid gender roles doctors required of prospective surgical patients. But as their rights were being denied and the few gains made eroded, trans people fought back, forming advocacy organisations, building communities and working to educate both the public and the medical profession on the realities of being transgender.
“The rise of the transgender movement capped the century in which sex change arst became a medical specialty and transsexuals arst emerged as a visible social group. From the early twentieth-century ex- periments on changing the sex of animals to the liberationist move- ment of the 1990s, the topic of sex change had served as a key site for the deanition and redeanition of sex in popular culture, science, medi- cine, law, and daily life. In a century when others had challenged the social categories and hierarchies of class, race, and gender, the people who hoped to change their sex had brought into question another fun- damental category—biological sex itself—commonly understood as obvious and unchangeable. In the modern push for self-expression, they had taken the meanings of self-transformation and social mobility to a new level, and from the margins of society, they had grappled with the everyday ways in which unconventional individuals confounded and provoked the mainstream. In the process, they had engaged with doctors, scientists, reporters, lawyers, judges, feminists, and gay libera- tionists, among others. Together, these various groups had debated big questions of medical ethics, nature and nurture, self and society, and the scope of human rights. None of them could ax the deanition of sex, which remains a topic of debate in medical journals, courtrooms, and television talk shows, and none of them could settle the question of the interconnections among sex, gender, and sexuality. Still, by the end of the twentieth century, the transgender activists could hope at least for a future in which the variations of sex and gender might no longer elicit stigma, ridicule, harassment, or assault.”
It’s almost 2am and my brain is mush but I did really like this book. It’s a foundational text for discussing trans history and is one of the first of its kind. I think it does a good job, but there are some parts where I don’t think it is super successful in its argument.
A very good read, despite being published in 2002. Provides a strong foundation in the field of transgender history but is definitely missing some crucial points for it to be a full ‘history of’. Still, I recommend as it’s a very well thought out social and medical history.
This is a history of transsexuality in Western culture in the last half of the 20th century, and how it came to be seen as a legitimate disorder that requires treatment. The author uses Christine Jorgensen, the "GI to blonde beauty" who made headlines in 1952 when she publicly announced her sex reassignment surgery, as a framing device for the changes. It's interesting, but fairly dry and reads like a text book. That's okay.
In the early 20th century, a few doctors in Europe experimented with hormones, ovary transplants, and other surgical methods to treat patients who came to them desperate for treatment because they believed themselves to be a member of the other sex. American doctors understood that there were people who were convinced they were in the wrong body, but either assumed they were simply gay crossdressers or interpreted this as an extreme type of homosexuality: these people hated being identified as homosexual so much that they felt they must really be the other sex. American doctors performed a few sex reassignment surgeries but only on people who were intersexed. It was felt that it was impossible for someone to change from one sex to the other for no reason other than the need to do so, but someone with ambiguous genitals or whose "real" gender appeared at puberty needed surgery to correct the defect.
In 1952 Christine Jorgensen was big news because she announced that she had had surgery to become the woman she had always felt herself to be. She had been a physically normal male but had always known she was female. She was not homosexual and not a crossdresser. She had found sympathetic doctors in Denmark. Back in America she supported herself with a tasteful nightclub act in which she talked about her transition, sang some songs, but didn't show her body. She framed her story in terms of someone struggling to be themself, which resonated with many people. By the end of the 50s, the term "transsexual" was accepted. The medical community was starting to redefine the ideas of sex, gender, and sexuality.
The 60s saw more sex reassignment surgery being performed in the United States on transsexuals, and distinctions became clear between cross dressing, homosexuality, and transsexuality. Johns Hopkins opened its gender clinic although the number of patients they accepted for surgery was very small. To quality, patients had to undergo a battery of psychological tests and needed to aspire to conventional gender roles. By the 70s, the terms "gender dypsphoria syndrome" and "gender identity disorder" were being used. Sex reassignment surgery was no longer a big news story. The public was becoming more open minded. At the same time, transsexuals in the gay community were coming into conflict with feminists. MTFs were excluded from the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. Feminists and gay liberationists challenged doctors, too, for their acceptance of traditional sex roles. Gender studies from a feminist viewpoint increased. By the 90s, there was a strong transsexual movement in which transsexuals asserted the right to define their sexuality.
Christine Jorgensen died in 1989, age 62. She had been willing to advocate for herself and for others like her, and her life led to redefinition of sex, gender, and sexuality.
Best book written to date on transsexual history. You go, Joanne! It's right there on my desk to use as a ready reference while I write the quickie book I owe Seal Press on the history of the transgender rights movement, which I've been working on all week. A good jumping-off point for what will hopefully become a larger historical interpretation of postwar American transsexuality. Meyerowitz tends to go heavy on description and narration, eschewing potentially productive (no pun intended) analysis with a Foucauldian power/knowledge framework. This book tells a very detailed history of the medicalization of transsexuality in the United States with a great deal of emphasis on male to female transsexuals. Despite the book claiming to be a history of transsexuality in general, it instead focuses on the medical aspects of being a transsexual (surgery and hormones in particular). The book talks a great deal about the surgical procedures for male to female transsexuals, but there is a lot less about female to male transsexuals. It often felt like the author threw the guys in as an after thought instead of really caring. I want to think more highly of the author though as the book was very detailed and was told in a narrative that made it more accessible to non-history buffs like me.
The book focuses a great deal on Christine Jorgenson (supposedly the first male to female transsexual in America according to the tabloids), but there is very little mention of Micheal Dillon (the female to male transsexual from the same time period). Though I can see why as Dillon was not American, but he made propositions to Jorgenson so it could have added to the story that everyone wanted a piece of her. It took more than half the book before a female to male was named and then they were quickly pushed aside for another male to female. This is common throughout history, but it is annoying to see it again and again especially in a book that is supposed to show the history. I am hoping the author does a follow up book about the history of trans men in America as that will be the only way that I will be able to accept that the author was able to see that this pattern was happening.
The book itself was long, detailed, and very dull. This is common of good history books. This book often rehashed the same issues out of order. It was not a linear history of medical treatments for transsexuals, instead it went topic by topic and focused on a select few trans women and a select few researchers. This ignored the involvement that trans men have had in the treatment of transsexuals as many trans men have worked closely with the researchers mentioned, but instead the author focused on the trans women. There was a mention of a trans man (Lou Sullivan), but no mention of his friend Jamison Green who was even more active in the politics of transitioning. Lou Sullivan was only mentioned to show that there was a strict definition of what transsexuals could be. Lou Sullivan was gay so therefore he was not a prime candidate for a “true transsexual” as dictated by researchers.
So over all this book was fascinating and much needed, but it felt like only half the story. I hope that the author will be able to finish the story as I highly enjoyed the way she presented the information and she made it less about the mental illness aspect and more about how others dealt with something that others had already figured out.
This book was extremely informational and eye-opening. As a trans non-binary person with a transgender son, I felt it important to learn about the history of transsexuality in the United States and abroad, The book focuses on a lot of transgendered individuals, but most notably, Christine Jorgensen, who has been credited as one of the first transgender people to be recognized in the public eye, as well as the first MTF individual to receive gender reassignment surgery.
Building off of that, the author dives deep into the history of transgendered people in the United States. The book reads like a textbook, but the information within the pages is so important. Our society today acts like transgender people are new. We are not new, we go back to time immemorial, and we aren’t going anywhere.
I gave this book 4 stars, because it mostly focuses on white people. There are very few mentions of Black people and people of color. I would have loved to learn more about their unique experiences and struggles. But overall, this book was one that I desperately needed to read. I learned so much about myself, my son, and my transgender siblings. We will continue to fight for our rights. We will not be erased.
This is a wonderful, engaging history - like most of Meyerowitz's work - that gives you a sense of how transsexuality evolved over the course of the twentieth century. Meyerowitz provides context by weaving together medical, legal, political, and cultural histories together that give readers touch points across the decades. It's a remarkable read and quite readable even for a non-academic audience.
should really be called ‘a history of transsexualism’ insofar as this book is more interested in medical practitioners than the lives of transsexuals during the period it covers. lots of good detail here and knowing about the medical stuff is worthwhile but without either a thesis/conclusion or detailed info on what life was like *outside* of the clinics it becomes just a dense recitation of facts
How Sex Changed is an intersectional study on the changing social and medical definitions of sex and how transsexuals navigated both spheres during the twentieth century. Meyerowitz’s history of transsexuality relies heavily upon archival material and utilizes the story of Christine Jorgensen as her illustrative lynchpin to drive the narrative. Jorgensen’s fame as the first male to female transsexual fueled the scientific and medical communities to sort “out a tangled thicket of varied conditions of sex, gender, and sexuality” (7). Sexual reassignment proved that sex was composed of many factors which included hormones, chromosomes, genitals, and other less tangible pieces. Some of those factors could be changed and sex change became possible and endorsed by a growing number of doctors.
Some of her assertions I didn't wholly agree with. Mainly the overreaching generalization that early transsexuals were completely responsible for the success of the whole queer community outreach in the nineties/2000s and the women's movement before then. However, the rejection of the strict dichotomy of unchanging biological sex is essential in Meyerowitz’s study on the history of transsexuality and did lead to greater successes in other movements. Transsexuals forced the reconceptualization of sex and gender during the twentieth century and presaged for scholarly discussion on the flexibility of sexual expression.
The history of early-twentieth century experiments with hormonal replacement and genital transplants in small mammals led to experimentation on humans who wished to change their sex. The early literature produced by Dr. Eugen Steinach and Dr. Robert Lichtenstern publically questioned the mutability of sex and challenged the previously popular view of a strictly dichotomous sex and gender. Meyerowtiz spends a great deal of time telling the stories of the first transsexuals who underwent sexual reassignment including Christine Jorgensen (1952). Jorgensen’s celebrity following her return to the United States created a demand for sexual reassignment from other transsexuals across the U.S. as they consumed medical journals and popular press which allowed them to identify beyond inversion or homosexuality. The medical community further redefined sex, gender, and sexuality as distinctive pieces of multi-faceted identities especially amongst members of the queer community as calls for sex change surgeries increased.
The division between gender, sex, and sexuality led to more academic theoretical discussion through which Meyerowitz concludes: “If sex was defined collectively…then no single variable could determine who was a man and who was a woman…and with medical intervention some variables could be changed” (127-8). A “fairy” could no longer be easily equated with a male-to-female transsexual due to their differing sexual desires and expressions. The surgical advancements that followed moved theory into reality. Liberal judicial rulings in the 1970s led to more liberalized medical advances and transsexuals became formally recognized by psychiatrists, doctors, and society. The discussion of the mutability of gender and sexuality sanctioned the medical and social recognition of other members of the LGBTQ community beyond the archaic “deviant” placeholder. This discourse also facilitated the growing women’s movement and opened the door to variations in gender identity and expression that continue on to this day.
Meyerowitz is a fantastic writer who is able to take multiple actors or fields of knowledge and weave them coherently into a narrative that is accessible and enjoyable to read. While her focus on telling the life stories of some individuals takes away from this narrative at times, they also help to "humanize" the characters, many of whom lived lives as outcasts or little more than sexual deviants or oddities during their lives. The work is much stronger in the first half than the second as the number of actors and changes in society/science multiply. Lastly, due to the explosion of transgender activism within the last few years (not to mention the use of the word transgender and how transsexual fits into that), the work may feel a bit dated as Meyerowitz ends the narrative in the early 1990s.
How Sex Changed is a solid objective history on transsexuality in the United States. Having no knowledge of this field, I found the book enlightening even if it was heavily hinged on the milestone of first American to receive the surgery, Christine Jorgensen. The author used this event to measure changing tides of opinion throughout the 20th century. Interestingly, Jorgensen was rendered something of an obsolete figure because she was so conservative about her image. One thing I really liked about this book is that Meyerowitz did not treat the transsexual as a monolith. Rather, the varying stances came out as this group became more outspoken and liberalized. I would recommend this book to just about anybody interested in the subject and maybe even to those who are not.
This book was a very thorough recount of the history of transsexuality emerging through the 1920's and advancing in the 1990's. Joanne Meyerowitz definitely did her research since gender is her speciality. The only few problems I have with the book is that she primarily focuses on the 50's and 60's and stops right at the 1990's with very few details. If she wrote the book 10 years later it would've been a better and more updated history of transsexuality. She gives an objective view about transsexuality and doesn't get very opinionated. It reads like a history book. Other than the flaws mentioned Meyerowitz book is a good overview of the beginning of transsexuality.
I read excerpts of this book for a class but ended up reading more of it later out of interest. I thought it was a great foray into the history of a still very much silenced part of the queer community. Meyerowitz does a great job of putting together a well thought out and highly academic analysis that's also very accessible to the average reader. She also makes it accessible in a way that's very entertaining without the shock and side show aspects of most exposes on this very complicated and contested piece of American History.
This is a history of transsexuality, starting with Christine Jorgenen, who was a big phenomenon in the popular press in the 50s, up to the end of the 20th century. Pretty interesting if you're not so familiar with the cast of characters who worked to educate, to provide access to surgery, to combat bias, over the years, and also the changes in attitude on all sides that were happening at the same time.
I found it very interesting. It reads like a history book, which I liked. The one flaw is that it was written in the early 2000's and is a bit outdated. Most everything I have come across about teams people is current or is very vague on actual historical details so this was enlightening on how the culture evolved.
I would recommend this to anyone, if just for the writing. It is the first entirely extremely well-written book I have read in a very long time. The scope of the subject and research is also wonderful. Overall, a fascinating look into a part of the past that I'd be willing to bet few people even knew existed.
Very good consideration of transsexuality in the US to the end of the 1990s; especially, in the context of the medical establishment and the emergent cultural debates over the meanings of gender and sex. Though as a sign of how swiftly change has been occurring (with a pub date of 2002), it is sometimes quaint.
This was a very interesting book that really drew me in and opened my eyes to the history of transexuals. I just found it to be about 50 pages too long. Although incredibly interesting I felt like I was slogging through by the end.
An adequate history of transexuality in the United States. However, Meyerowitz insists a bit too heavily on the medical discourse as THE Discourse with a capital "D" that determines the transexual body, which I find problematic.
Excellent overview of a very obscure historical topic. There were faults that should be expected from a monograph that is touching on a new historical subject, but overall a fascinating start to what should be a very interesting academic field.
