Some feeling of "help! what do I do next?" is inevitable when you first try something like surfing - but just having skimmed the first half (ish) of this book helped me feel a lot more prepared when I got in the water. Covers gear, technique, and terminology thoroughly but at a speed suitable for absolute beginners.
