I finally got my hands on the first two Citizen Dog collections, and I had barely removed the wrapping when I was already fully immersed in the world of dog "I Do Whatever I Want" Fergus, his owner "Why Me?!" Mel, cat "The Unheard Voice of Reason" Cuddles and all the other hilarious beings - animals and humans alike - which populate Mark O'Hare's unfortunately short-lived comic.
Deep down, Fergus - though fully anthropomorphised - is still just a dog, obsessed with food, playing (though not exactly your typical canine games) and wrecking Mel's home. Who really is the master here?
The very early strips look somewhat clumsy and it took O'Hare a while until he found the characters' final form, but once that had happened, they were a pure delight to look and laugh at. Or rather with. Or often both.
It's a shame all three collections are out of print. They should be reissued as quickly as possible. For the love of our most faithful (and occasionally rather unpredictable) companion.
I love "Citizen Dog"...no matter how many times I read them, I always laugh out loud. I live close to Purdue University and have attended classes there off-and-on for almost 15 years. O'Hare also attended Purdue and I remember reading the daily strip that he drew for the school paper. I framed a "CD" strip that features Fluffy drinking coffee in the diner ("an adventure in every cup"), and have had it hanging in my kitchen for almost 12 years.
Absolutely brilliant. I laughed my head off from the very first page and continued chuckling to myself long after I had finished. Anybody who's ever owned a dog (or been owned by a dog, rather) knows exactly what Mark O'Hare is talking about. Can't wait to get my hands on the next one!
A dog and his owner/companion. This is a dog who talks and believes he is an equal to the human, he is offended when he is left in the car or is required to travel in the cargo hold. Some humorous strips but let down by poor print quality on some pages.
Aunque la premisa es simpática y divertida, se mantiene siempre en el mismo gag. Alguna vez arranca algo más que una sonrisa, pero esperaba algo más que lo que ofrece.
This cartoon deserves a listing here, I've just finished it for about the 10th time (the first in years) and it still makes me laugh out loud. If you can track down a copy - do.
