OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

This guidebook worked out well for me because there is so much to see/do in Paris besides the major monuments. The author (introduced at the beginning of the book) is a 20- to 30-something year old who suggested off-the-beaten paths that someone like me would enjoy (cabarets, thrift shops, etc.)

But if you want detailed descriptions about the site you're looking at, this is not the book for you. I knew enough about the art/architecture of the monuments that I [luckily] didn't need that kind of detailed info. A few things about this book were not very helpful: 1) you'd be better off buying a laminate map than the fold-out included with this one; 2) the interior maps number each site, but the descriptions don't show the number...this makes it very hard to reference where you're going; 3)the features of what the locals "think" about Paris is interesting, but is (of course) one-sided and not very necessary; 4) author doesn't tell you all the must-see places (pretty biased to what she enjoys about the city).

Well I didn't actually compare guidebooks extensively, but I loved this one. It's small and light so I could bring it around with me easily; there's no lodging details (already had mine booked so why take up the space); the "highlights" and "itineraries" are spot-on; the pull-out map is a good one -- used it extensively; there's info on LBGT stuff; the practical info is useful (like admissions hours and prices); the neighborhood sections are color-coded and easy to use. I guess it's hard to recommend because people travel so differently, but this one was great for my week in Paris.

We paired this book with Paris Top Ten. This highlighted a few things that were not in the Paris Top Ten book, like the Shakespeare Bookstore and specific shopping places. However, it just didn't capture all that is Paris (maybe because it's from one person's point of view?). The map included a current subway map, so that was helpful.

Of the three "Encounter" series by Lonely Planet that I own, this one is my favorite. The map is detailed, the metro stops for each location are accurate and it lists most areas of note.

This is one of the best travel pocket books. I found the itineraries to be extremely useful/helpful when trying to fit the best of Paris in only a few days.
