Tough as nails Alexandra Trevalyn does what most people can't: She kills werewolves. Once part of an elite group of hunters, she's going rogue these days, though no less determined to rid the world of bloodthirsty beasts -- once and for all. That's why Alex had no choice but to kill Julian Barlow's wife -- and will have to pay the price. Julian's brand of vengeance is downright devious, and now he's turned Alex into a member of his pack. It's only a matter of time before she falls under his spell. With the wild freedom of the wolf in her veins, Alex can't deny that Julian wakes her most primal passions -- and draws her that much closer to the moon's call, where evil lies in wait.

I'm so annoyed -- I wrote a long (and brilliant, of course!) review and Goodreads apparently ate it *scowls*
So let's try this again!
So I saw this new release on Amazon yesterday and snagged it for my Kindle based on the synopsis. It wasn't until I was a couple chapters into it that I realized that it was the newest novel in a series that I started but never finished! Doh!
However, it turned out fine, because while there wasn't a big info dump at the beginning like some authors *cough*Jayne Castle*cough* tend throw into the newest editions to a long-running series. Most of the characters from previous novels were only mentioned in passing (if at all) and really only Edward and the Jäger-Sucher's were mentioned with any regularity.
What worked for me:
*I loved that they didn't villainize Alana. Too many authors take the easy way out and turn a deceased spouse (especially one who started off in the story as a complete paragon of goodness and virtue) into a vile biznich or jackhole whom the reader should be thankful that our hero doesn't have to put up with any more. Kudos to LH for keeping her inherently "good" even as she made her more "real".
*While not as humorous as, say, a Kresley Cole novel, there was definitely a lot of snark and humor in the story which certainly helped to keep things from becoming too maudlin and heavy.
*The magic factor -- an alternate explanation for werewolves outside of the previous.. er.. science explanation from the previous novels. While it did leave a wide open blank as far as explanations go, it was helpful to have another factor that could've been the cause of the differences between Julian's werewolves and the werewolves Alex traditionally hunted.
*I really enjoyed the chemistry between Alex and Julian. The whole enemies-to-lovers thing is a favorite ploy of mine to begin with, and so yeah, while they did seem to fall into bed at a moment's notice (c'mon folks, ever heard of foreplay?!), the fact that they were disgusted and angry with themselves afterwards added delicious tension.
What didn't work for me:
*Julian's viking past. Yeah yeah, I know, he was a bloody VIKING, but still, I didn't like some of the things he'd admitted to doing. It's unfair to judge him with contemporary ethics when his bad deeds were done in a time where they were not only encouraged but were expected and dangerous not to participate in, but nobody likes to hear that their hero used to be a rapist. Blarg.
*The whole nudity thing -- sure they were werewolves and therefore pack and nobody cared and blah blah blah but I still have a hard time identifying with a heroine who cheerfully runs around in her birthday suit amongst strangers, especially of both sexes, unless of course it's that sort of story *wink wink nudge nudge* lol
*The whole issue that came to conclusion during the epilogue. It felt predictable and too... neatly wrapped up for my tastes. Also would've preferred that some other loose ends be tied up (but I won't mention which ones since it'd be a spoiler) ;)
Overall, a very enjoyable story. While I think there was enough information to eek by without being terribly lost, I would still suggest that readers new to the series pick up at least one or two previous novels first, so that they will better understand the basic motivations and personalities of the Jäger-Sucher's and Edward especially. Solid 4 Stars
Yum! I love me some Lori Handeland books! And altho MBTM is quite different from previous Nightcreature novels, Lori's captivating style of writing kept me up all night reading (again). Today, as I read another PNR book, I kept flashing back to elements of Marked, which influenced my other reading. And I wished that she would do a spin-off from the Nightcreature village with its new Alpha(s), because I'm not ready to let the characters go yet!
Alexandra Trevalyn (I love her name!) use to be a Jager-sucher but went on her own as a were-hunter. Because of her past, she doesn't even give the monsters a chance to prove whether they are good or bad because she doesn't believe they have a choice - they are ALL bad. So when she has a chance to clean out a nest of weres known for killing, she also kills a golden wolf running with that crowd even tho she didn't see it kill. Later, she encounters Jullian, the gold wolf's heartbroken husband. He has hunted Alex with the intent to make her suffer, and how more can she suffer but to become that which she despises? So he bites her.
Jullian takes Alex back to his home and here is where the meat of the book lies. Alex has so much to learn about weres and about herself, and so does Jullian. Their personal growth is beautiful to see, but don't forget that Lori always has a good mystery to be solved in her novels!

2018 = 4 stars 2019 = 3 stars 2022 = major skimming to write a review
Julian was a Norse berserker who, in the heat of battle, literally became an animal—a werewolf. He was a legend as he was the only one with this ability. His fury continues to give him magical powers that let him do almost anything when angry.
Alexandra (Alex) is a rogue Jäger-Sucher agent. Julian hunts her for killing his wife, and then turns her into a werewolf—the very thing she hates. He learns that he can't be separated from her bc she's now part of his pack, so he takes her to his Alaskan werewolf village. There, he aims to teach her that werewolves, like humans, have feelings, hopes, and dreams.
🇼🇭🇦🇹 🇮 🇩🇮🇩🇳'🇹 🇱🇮🇰🇪:
☹️ The slow pacing. The story started out exciting and held my attention, but it changed once they reached Barlowsville, Julian's village. The first half is filled with dull info dumps, pointless thoughts, and irritating conversations. Little happens.
☹️ The heroine. Alex is a tough fighter with a bad attitude. She knows Judo and can handle any weapon. She often mouths off to Julian. What makes her super special is that she’s the only one who can go against the Alpha and survive.
☹️ The lack of romance. The MCs are at odds for 99% of the time. He hated her and she hated him.
At 89%, Alex is thinking:She did not love Barlow; he did not love her. They barely knew each other, and what they knew they did not like.
At 97%. After Julian rescues Alex from the bad guy:Alex crumpled to the snow. He could have reached out and kept her from falling. Instead he just turned away.
Alex thinks:She couldn't leave. They were bonded. Mated. Stuck. When had she fallen in love with him? She really couldn't say. Was what she felt merely a by-product of their bond?(Yes it was.)
At the very end, Julian leaves for 6 months. When he returns there's NO mention of love, only acceptance of their mate-bond. In fact, Julian never says he loves Alex. He only thought about the great love he had for his late wife.
Speaking of Julian's late wife, Alana, whom he loved deeply and hated Alex for killing. Their marriage had seemed perfect, but later we learn that Alana Julian’s great love turned out to be not so great after all.
And the part that really got to me: Alex ends up pregnant at the end because Julian, while angry and thinking about Alana, unintentionally used magic during sex to get her pregnant. The very thing that would have made Alana happy! Ugh. 😡
The bad guy was Why he went around killing people: Wow, what a surprise. 🙄
It made NO sense how the bad guy managed to hide his murderous tendencies for hundreds of years from the Alpha, who was constantly around him. Another werewolf knew, but not his own magically powerful 🙄
🤬 Rating lowered to 3 stars, because now I'm really unhappy after writing this review.
Marked by the Moon is the 9th book in the series "Nightcreatures". Lori Handeland has been one of my favorite authors for several years now.
She provides the reader with likeable characters and strong backstories. There is always some humor and she doesn't fill the pages with too much eroticism, which (IMO) can take away from a good story.
In this book, our hero Julian has lost his beloved wife to a no-nonsense werewolf hunter named Alexandra. Julian has the chance to kill Alex but instead decides to make her a werewolf so she would better understand their way of life.
This book has some good twists and turns and a surprise ending. It is an enjoyable read with an original story line.
It was very different than the other books. When my sister first read it I was a little wary of what she told me, maybe I wouldn't like it. So, I put it off until last night and I have to admit I loved it! It has to be my favorite in the series so far. Alex and Julian fight and are constantly at each others throats but neither can deny the passion between then and the ever growing bond. It was a great book kept me guessing the whole way though and I never saw the ending coming!!! Can't wait to read the next book Moon Cursed.
I love the Nightcreature's series, it's been too long between books! This is another great addition to the series, the writing has changed a bit from the previous books (from first person POV to both), but I can see in this story why she did it. The characters and story were excellent, I highly recommend reading this series if you haven't already!
I absolutely LOVED reading this. Alex and Julian weren't only awesome characters they were hilarious to read. They kept me guessing throughout the whole book what they would do next. I did guess a few things before they came but they were still good to read when they were revealed. All in all I loved it.
This novel offers very interesting views on werewolves. In short, werewolf hunter (Alexandra Trevalyn) goes rogue, kills a werewolf she was tracking in Los Angeles. Subsequently, Alexandra is captured by werewolf lord whose wife she killed, and while bound, is bitten by said werewolf lord (Julian) and made into a werewolf. More twists and turns follow. Hold on tight and don't let go.
I just... I couldn't forgive Alex for killing Alana.
Yes, backstory, misunderstanding, murdered dad I get it. I too have done things that I regret, and I praise the author for not vilifying the ex wife, but I just couldn't forgive Alex nor could I forgive Julian for coming back and shacking up with his Ex's murderer. It was not fair she got her HEA, while Alana got mostly treated as a tragic backstory for the Male Protagonist/a problem to overcome in their relationship and not a person that was deeply wronged.
I couldn't stomach this book as try as I might after that, especially with the contrivance of "welp, they are fated mates, nothing to do about it, they are going to end up together". It felt extra sleazy because it's clearly meant to be a HEA but at the end of the day while Alex does learn to be a better person and let go of prejudice, Julian ends up trapped in a relationship no sane man would want if he had the choice (and he didn't).
This didn't feel romantic, it felt fucked up, and hey, I could deal with it if that was what they were trying to go for, but instead this is clearly marketed as a supposed Happy Ending.
so I have to regrettably give it 1 star.

Alex has been a werewolf hunter since she was a child. When Julian shows up and makes her the monster she hates the only thing she can think of is finding a silver bullet before she changes. Edward has other plans for her though. Will she be able to accomplish her mission or will Julian or his wolves end her for killing one of their own? Will Alex and Julian be able to put aside their animosity to protect her secrets and a nearby village from a crazed wolf on a killing spree? I really enjoyed this book, and would love another glimpse into the village after this story ended.
I’ve been reading the series in order. Occasionally, I read the novellas too. This one was by far (this far) my favorite. The beginning was shaky and my interest didn’t start off strong but once the story got its sea legs (or wolf legs?), I was intrigued and committed to the story. The leads had good chemistry even when they didn’t like each other. There were no irritating “hair feathers” like in previous books. I will probably re-read this one again which is something I rarely do.
Since the death of her mother and the murder of her father, the heroine has dedicated her life to just one thing- hunting werewolves. She's even abandoned the jager-suchers because she refuses to believe in a cure, that once infected, that animal has to die. She's on the hunt for such a beast when an entirely new sort of creature comes across her path.
The hero is what she hates and if given the chance, she'd gladly put a bullet to him. Too bad, he's managed to tie her up. He informs her that because of her ignorance and blood thirst for his kind, for the death of his wife, he's decided to teach her a lesson. He doesn't kill her, as she's expecting- and wanting him to- instead, he changes her, a fate worse than death. He then leaves, expecting her to kill the man he's left for her to fed on after the first change and to be rid of her and the pain she's caused for good. But things don't go exactly to plan.
The heroine does change, but she's immediately contacted by her form boss whom gives her the suppression serum to control the bloodlust and informs her she's to infiltrate the hero's pack so the Jager-suchers can put an end to them once and for all. The hero turn realizes he can't follow through with his plans to abandon her and returns, taking her with him north to Alaska to become part of his pack. Animosity runs high between them. The hero hates the heroine for the death of his wife and for her blind devotion to an unjust cause. The heroine hates the hero for turning her against her will and because he starts to unsettle what she once thought to be a concrete belief system. But the hero is nothing at all like any other werewolf she's encountered and though he's said to be the first, he's more the exception to the rule, not the rule itself.
First off, he can change at will. Secondly, he and his pack are in control of the blood lust, devising a system to kill a man person that first change to prevent madness and then to survive on donated blood for every full moon following. The town, his home, is peaceful and organized. The heroine finds it hard to maintain her hatred when the people around act and behave like, well, people. Except for the rogue wolf who's taken to killing villagers. The heroine uses this as a strong hold to what she knew all along, a werewolf is nothing but a killing machine.... But why doesn't she feel that same urge? Why doesn't the hero? Nothing makes sense. And this unsettling and repulsive desire that is forming between them is a big problem as they can't seem to keep their hands off one another regardless of the anger and bad blood between them. How can he desire the woman responsible for his wife's murder? Yet he can't seem to help the way his body responds. He craves her, wants to possess her, but what good can come of it? They will always be enemies regardless of the bond and he can never truly trust her, same as she can never truly trust him.
This book was good...if a tad on the boring side. A predictable plot and a romance that seemed heavy on lust but not on love made it a struggle for me to rate it higher. The chemistry was there. The fact that they were drawn together regardless of bitterness and prejudice, drawn together against their will in fact, was interesting and made for a lovely sense of tension but even towards the end I never felt 'love' between them. It was just rushed into telling the reader that they love each other rather than showing it and I would have much preferred the former. The plot, as I said, was a bit cookie cutter without a lot of imagination. The villain was the villain. The conflict was the conflict. Everything in it's place, neat and tidy. Me, I prefer a bit of surprise, something that throws the reader off and keeps the story interesting. It wasn't bad by any means it just wasn't a favourite.
i really really enjoyed this book!! I really loved that this story showed the world of werewolves, rather than the world of the hunters as the rest of the Nightcreatures series mostly dwelled on.
Alexandra is a werewolf hunter, who used to work for the Jager- Suchers, but decides to go "rogue" and hunt werewolves on her own without the help of this elite government regulated group. Years ago, her father was killed by a werewolf, and ever since she's wanted to see each and everyone of them good and dead.
While hunting one day, she kills a werewolf in human form and in broad daylight. Enter Julian Barlow, an ancient Berzerker warrior who has been looking for the Hunter who killed his wife for a very long time. He has followed a lead, and sees Alex murder the werewolf in cold blood. Julian must act at once, and kidnaps Alex and turns her into a werewolf to show her that they are not all bad, and to punish her for the death of his beloved wife.
Meanwhile Edward Mandenauer, leader of the Jagger-Suchers has been looking for Julian Barlow for a very long time. He thinks Julian is building a werewolf army, but cannot for the life of him, find where their camp is. He seems to have eyes everywhere, and has located Alexandra, and watched everything unravel. Now he wants her, in werewolf form to be a spy and go with Alex to his camp and report back to the Jagger-Succhers. He injects her with a potion, the government agency has been working on, to curb the blood thirst of new werewolves.
Julian Barlow is indeed different. He is a decendant of the Berzerker warriors, and the one Berzerker that legends are based on, a Viking who turned into a wolf in battle. He has created an entire village in the middle of Alaska of werewolves, who like him, do not have a thirst for blood and murder. He saved them all from death, and turned them into werewolves.
As Alexandra learns more and more about Barlows world, she realizes they are indeed different, and battles with her inner self whether or not she should report back to Mandenauer and the Jagger-Succhers or remain in Barlowsville with Julian and some new friends she's made along the way.
This is a fast paced, action packed book with a good share of sexual tension.
One thing I really did not understand, was a werewolf Alexandra met in the EAT cafe in Barlowsville. His name was Daniel, and he claimed to have known Edward Mandenauer, and had been rather close maybe even friends with him once upon a time. However, Daniel has been a werewolf since the 1700's and Edward Mandenauer is a mortal being who was not around during that time period. I highly doubt Handeland is going will develope this story further in future books, as it was such a small part of the overall novel.
There was a long wait of nearly three years between this book and the previous release in the series. After the wait, it took me a while to pick this one up. I had vague memories of what the previous books were about and didn't feel heavily invested in the series anymore. The good news is Marked by the Moon doesn't rely heavily on previous characters and the world building is well covered to allow this to be a stand-alone. The bad news, the pull of the moon was weak, leaving me less than satisfied.
Alex Trevalyn is a hunter and killer of werewolves - a Jäger-Sucher. For Alex, the only good werewolf is a dead werewolf. It's the only life she's know since she was a little girl and her mother was killed by a werewolf. Alex is a smart-ass, tough loner who doesn't play well with others. I didn't dislike her but never warmed up to her either.
Julian Barlow is a Viking and a werewolf who is out for revenge. He has a unique way of getting it but it doesn't turn out the way he planned. Julian hates Alex for killing his wife and at first we're given the impression that his wife was the love of his life but in fact, they had some major problems. He did love her but it wasn't perfect. The mega attraction Julian has for Alex really pisses him off! I found this amusing since he wanted so bad to hate her but couldn't stop wanting her. The guy has super powers beyond typical werewolf powers and yet he overpowered by a woman.
Julian and Alex are a very unlikely pair. She wants to kill him, he wants revenge. Where's the love? I had a hard time believing these two were falling in love. They didn't have much time together other than when they were arguing or having sex. The ending got all mushy and they both had much love for each other. I'm just not sure how they got there.
There is a murder mystery running through the story with locals being killed and one of Julian's pack the most likely suspect. I wouldn't say the killer was obvious but there were only a few characters to choose from. The reveal of the killer was anti-climatic since the main problem Julian and Alex faced, her having been a Jäger-Sucher, him wanting revenge had not been resolved. When the dust settled the positions Alex and Julian found themselves took an odd turn and I found it less than believable given how powerful Julian is.
I do have the next two books in the series on the TBR pile and I'll get to them someday but not anytime soon.
In Lori Handeland's "Marked by the Moon," the latest release in the "Nightcreature Novel" series, Handeland begins with a systematic execution of an unquestionably evil werewolf by rogue hunter Alexandra Trevalyn. Her weapon of choice is a gun loaded with silver bullets. After a crude exchange, Alex shoots, and a blaze erupts as the bullets pierce the skin (a common side effect when silver meets wolf).
When Alex finishes her assignment, she is confronted by Julian Barlow, a centuries-old alpha, whose wife she similarly executed. Julian's plan for revenge is not to kill Alex, but to turn her into the thing she hates most - a werewolf.
After losing her parents in separate attacks, Alex believes all werewolves are monsters who deserve to die, and she has made their extermination her life's mission.
Julian's bite transforms her, but as her maker, he is physically bound to her now that she is a member of his pack.
When she discovers her father's murderer is a member of Julian's pack, she seizes the opportunity to penetrate Julian's Antarctic colony and hunt down the killer. Not only will she seek revenge but she will reveal their location to her former employer, Edward Mandenauer, the head of an elite taskforce aimed at ridding the world of werewolves.
Julian and Alex quarrel constantly. But after a long journey to his village, and a delirium-charged coupling, their relationship begins to change. Julian tries to deny his attraction as Alex comes to terms with her duality and overpowering bigotry.
The storyline, at times, falls victim to overkill. Handeland offers easy-outs for challenging circumstances: A simple spell by a voodoo priestess helps overcome the uncontrollable bloodlust of a new werewolf and Julian, already a powerful werewolf, also possesses magical powers, including the ability to be invisible.
Handeland's best asset is her humor. Alex's sarcastic wit and clever comebacks help to win her alpha (and readers) over.
MARKED BY THE MOON by Lori Handeland is a fantastic paranormal romantic suspense novel set in modern day Alaska. It is well written with great details, depth, twists, turns, a page turner and a keeper. It is "A Nightcreature Novel". It has romance, sensuality, werewolves, murder, some wit, family, brotherhood, primal passions, bloodthirsty beasts, soul mates, human to wolf, wickedness, trying to find peace in a world of wickedness, hope, redemption, secrets and shadows. The characters are intriguing, some are selfless, some are wicked, the romance is sexy, witty, the banter between the hero and heroine is entertainment in itself. The hero, Julian, is centuries old, handsome, a werewolf, out for revenge in the killing of his wife, an alpha male, the leader of his pack, has magical powers also and he turns the killer of his wife into an werewolf also. The heroine, Alex, is beautiful, his a hunter of werewolves, tough as nails, rogue hunter, hunting for her father's killer(a werewolf),killed Julian's wife, turned into a werewolf by Julian for revenge and the elite group of hunter's leader wants her to spy on Julian and his group. Although, Julian has turned her into a werewolf, she can't deny her attraction to him. She soon learns, not all werewolves are killers. She feels the wild freedom of the wolf running through her veins and can't deny her primal passion for Julian. Julian also can't deny his attraction to Alex, they soon succumb to their primal passion. Learn their is also a killer werewolf among their group. Must find him or her and destroy they before they are destroy. The killer is closer than they think and is after his own revenge. This is a fast paced, action packed, full of banter and wit story that will leave you wanting more. I would highly recommend this book especially,if you enjoy paranormal romance with a little twist, this is for you. This book was received for review from the publisher and details can be found at St. Martin's Paperbacks and My Book Addiction and More.
This was an extremely interesting premise, given the rest of the series, so I may have had higher expectations than I should have. In execution, this was till a good book, but just did quite meet those expectations. Alex is a rogue Jager-Sucher who at some point in her hunting, killed a golden werewolf - who just happened to be Julian's beloved wife (and apparently not an evil monster, like Julian and his band of werewolves). Julian wants to make Alex understand that his wolves are just like the people they were before they were bitten, and the only way to make her realize it is to turn her. And this makes her suffer because she would truly rather be dead than a werewolf. The two hate each other, but can't keep their hands off each other.
As I said, the premise was great. So interesting to get the other side of the story. And I kept going back and forth with Julian on whether I actually liked him or not. This author is incredibly good at making those dubious heroes. And of course, the way this author writes keeps a reader fully engaged throughout the book. Not a dull moment, truly. But something just didn't feel right to me between Julian and Alex. Maybe it was the fact that they truly didn't like each other and they just kept reminding each other of horribly painful memories. It sort of felt like they didn't really fall in love, but that they got trapped into it by being mates. I also wasn't a huge fan of the epilogue/conclusion part.

I really like this story. It’s simple and way different from the previous books, but fits in nicely.
I was getting tired of Edward and his manipulations. He does try to manipulate Alex, but things get away from him and the main story is completely out of this hands. I’m so proud of Alex. She and Julian are perfect and finally get their HEA.
I enjoyed how the person who’s trying to get revenge ends up having to save and train the person he wanted revenge on. Interesting how we finally get the ‘other’ POV of how some werewolves are good.
Normally I would say that Alex was too sarcastic, but the balance of humor and how it affects Julian makes it play out well. Especially seeing how the others react to the by-play. I love Ella and am glad she gets her HEA also. In fact the whole town is cool.
Quick Thoughts: 1)The little Alaskan werewolf village would make a great series of the stories behind each resident.
2)Part of this reminds me of the movie ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ in that the oldest brother Aaron, after an argument with his wife, left to in a huff to live in the hills by himself, then he finally comes back to a big surprise.
3)Julian’s history is a different take on the origin of making a werewolf. It’s particularly of interest for me since my husband has Viking blood in him. Hmmmm?
Fave Quote: “I told you to come,” he said. “I told you to die,” she returned. “But you’re still breathing.”
Fave Scenes: Alex being turned, the polar bear, jumping blood and Alex’s surprise.
This was one of Handeland's more predictable books. Still it was a good read, but one that I zipped through rather quickly since I already knew the general direction it was going.
I'll say right off the bat that I was a little dissapointed that there was yet another werewolf that was 'good' from the start. I like reading the monsters as monsters because it's a nice change of pace from all the other paranormal romances out there. It was even more dissapointing that there was a whole town of 'nice' werewolves.
Plot wise I found this book to be not as well thought out as Handeland's others. How the lead male, Julian remained unaware of his brother's murderous lifestyle for so long made no sense to me whatsoever. I also didn't appreciate another character being introduced near the end of the book for the sole purpose of being the one to have suspicion fall on. It would have worked so much better if he'd been introduced much earlier, rather than the 'suspicious guy gone fishing'.
What I did like about this book? The sex. And the dilema surrounding the two leads attraction to each other. Alex is a rogue hunter who killed Julian's wife. Julian is werewolf bent on revenge and turns Alex into a werewolf for the sole purpose of letting her know what it feels like to be one of them. It was an interesting dynamic to watch Julian fall in love with his wife's murderer.

This is the first boook I have read by Lori Handeland and found it different and page moving. The main characters are Alexandra Trevalyn and Julian Barlow and the electricity between them is very emotional. Alex is trying to klill werewolves and find the killer of her father. She, as her father, belongs to the Jager-Sucher, whose main purpose is to kill the werewolves. Juilan Barlow is the alpha or leader of werewolves who live in Alaska. He makes werewolves, who accept the change, and they are part of his group that live in Barlowsville. Be prepared for some sulty scenes and also some language the author uses. I want to remark that she does a good job using the word, Inuit instead of the common word Eskimo. The book mentions some of the words we no longer use and Eskimo is one of them. (I personally feel it is a matter of becoming educated on words and when people use them, they are used to using the old terms.) Read her book to get a different type of book and "feel" the feelings of the charcters. Lori Habndeland does a good job of bringing the reader into the book. I look forward to reading her other books. Look for her on Facebook.
Alex is a werewolf hunter, trained by her Jäger-Sucher father after her mother was killed by a werewolf. She's hunted on her own after her father is also killed by a werewolf. Julian is the head of a group of werewolves he's created, but unlike most other werewolves, his group doesn't believe in killing.
Julian has hunted Alex since she killed his gentle wife and turns her when finding her. He plans on leaving her alone to suffer while learning `the other side' but finds he can't leave her behind. In the meantime, Edward, the head of the Jäger-Sucher finds Alex and tasks her with being a spy in Julian's camp as they fear he's creating a werewolf army and no one sent after him has returned.
This is the ninth book in the Nightcreature paranormal romance series, mostly dealing with werewolves and hunters. But whereas most of the books focus on the werewolf as the bad guy, here the hunter learns things aren't as cut and dried as they seem. This has added new life to this popular series.
Interesting characters, mystery and sexual tension in a remote Alaskan setting.
Other than Moon Cursed (which while it is a Nightcreature book, it isn't a werewolf tale) I think this is my favorite in the Nightcreature series at least until Crave the Moon comes out (well see if this stays my fav). Spoiler alert!! Who knew there could be a whole village of werewolves who are good unlike their demon-ridden brethen that Edward is always after (other than Elise and the wolves she's cured). This tale just goes to show you that while revengence may best be served cold, watch out - it might come back and bite you in the booty. The chemistry between Julian and Alex was well written. I especially liked the blood jumping petrie dishes with mates - what a great original twist on the mythos. The getting sick when far away is a bit like Eileen Wilks' Lupi stories but Lori gave it her own twist so it is ok. I was a little disappointed in the plot twist (but that is nothing unusual because I am frequently able to guess the plots) but it does take away from the story. I wonder if future books will have Edward going after them? Hmmm, will just have to wait and see.
If your whole existence was killing werewolves and you suddenly became one but no one would kill you to put you out of your misery what would you do? If your whole mission in life was to torture and then kill the woman that had killed your wife but you find instead that desire overrules that mission, what would you do? If a killer was out there, stalking both of you...would you allow the things that divide you to separate you even more or would you bond together and fight for survival? This book answers all those questions. The story line itself was pretty good. I wasn't really sure I believed the whole "magic" that the hero Julian possessed. That part would have probably been more believable if the people he made wolves exhibited similar traits, even if not to the same level as he had them. Otherwise it was a fast read and I really enjoyed it.
