Rate this book
Most women would not be pleased to be labeled a spinster. But Lady Poppy Smith-Barnes isn't most women. In fact, Poppy has invented an imaginary fiancé, the Duke of Drummond, to deter unwanted suitors. A very useful fellow, this duke, until the real Drummond turns up and uses Poppy's ploy to trap her in a betrothal.

A good spy flies below the radar. Which is why being named one of the Prince Regent's "Impossible Bachelors" is so inconvenient for Nicholas Staunton. Every society female will be out to ensnare him. Nicholas needs a fiancé - and Poppy's ruse is the answer. How could he have known she'd be a brazen, sensual siren with an irresistible taste for adventure? Now nothing less will do than to convince his fiery Poppy to revoke her spinster status...for good.

4 stars – Historical/Regency Romance

The best compliment I can give this is to say that it was the perfect cure for my utterly craptastic, stressful week. There are tons of highly anticipated new releases out that I’m itching to read, but I’ve felt so drained lately and really just needed something light and fun that wouldn’t require a lot of thought or energy on my part. (Very lazy of me, I know.)

This is a charming, perky, feel-good romance with endearing characters that totally hit the spot and went down smooth, sweet, and easy like a nice glass of Riesling. Yes it’s fluffy, fanciful, and even a tad bit silly, but it was the ideal antidote for my humdrum, crummy mood. I would have preferred a lot more heat; nevertheless, it still left a satisfied smile on my face.

For optimum enjoyment, I suggest pairing this with a chilled bottle of white wine, and my personal recommendation would be a refreshingly light, sweet Riesling. :)

...I didn't like it. I thought I would, after reading the first book in the series, but no, I didn't.

Poppy, our heroine, is a spinster, excuse me, Spinster. She vows to only marry for love and she is in love with a Russian prince. Not that she is lacking in proposals, but she has always referred to an absentee Duke of Drummond, as her true love to avoid awkwardness. But, the real Duke of Drummond enters the scene, forcing her into an engagement. Nicholas Staunton, the Duke of Drummond, aka. Lord Maxwell, from the previous book, needs to marry and he needs to marry fast, for the 'Service', of course. Afterall, he's an 'Impossible Bachelor' and has no interest in marriage. Poppy is perfect to his plans. But, Poppy isn't the milk and water miss. She craves adventure and is proud of her Spinster position.

Yes, everyone, this is how bizarre the whole thing starts. I could have even handled it (maybe), if there wasn't a Spinster club, with the perks of an eccentric aunt and 2 meddlesome bffs. *rolls eyes* I loathe historical spy romances, and its worse when the hero spills the beans early and recruits the heroine (who can't keep a secret to save her life) for his next mission - something about stealing a painting with a secret message. Oh yea, they also start getting frisky, way before Poppy even develops feelings for her duke. Did I mention that the book starts off with the hero in bed with the villainess, the Russian princess? No? Well, she makes her mark being super bitchy throughout the entire book.

Poppy was childish and kinda stupid. She didn't possess the charm that she was supposed to have. Drummond was only slightly better than his counterpart, but he didn't light any fires either. They had a few well-executed steamy parts, but they seemed so unlikely, I was constantly slamming my head on my desk, or my hand, or my computer.

Characters from the previous Impossible Bachelor book, made an appearance, but nothing substantial or memorable.

Clearly, I was disappointed and cannot recommend this book. I will still read the next book, because I have faith in Kieran Kramer to deliver. I refuse to believe that the first book was a fluke. I wasn't entirely thrilled with the plot to begin with, so my dissatisfaction may have some root in that.

I just finished reading this book, and I'm hesitant to give it three stars, but I feel two is just too low. When I bought it, I hadn't realized it was in a series, and that I had already read the first one -- When Harry Met Sally. If I would have realized this before purchasing it, chances are I wouldn't have bought the book. It just frustrated me, plain and simple.

I think the summary of the book sounds interesting, and I definitely thought this book would be a fun read, but I found it dull and unexciting. I see on here some people give it really good reviews, and what I think it boils down to, in the end, is that I don't like the authors style of writing. I find her characters lacking somewhat, and feel they are almost completely developed, but there's still something missing. I also find myself wanting a lot more passion. I might have been able to enjoy the book better, had I not paid eight dollars for it. I'm not saying it's the worst read in the world, I'm just saying it's most definitely not my favorite.

I would recommend this book if you can get it for cheap and if you have nothing else to do.

I'm a little irritated at myself for buying this book after I didn't really like the first one. I found this book annoying and silly. The premise was ok, but the author kept adding so many crises and twists that I was just irritated by the whole thing. I felt like Nicholas and Poppy didn't always act in character but I did like them marginally better than and I did Harry and Molly from the first book. I did not find all the bizarre stuff ie: waiting for a corgi to poop out jewelry, Frank's secret dream to become a cooper; Poppy's mother a secret agent; Groop actually being Nicholas' uncle the duke, etc, etc... particularly credible. It just felt juvenile to me. I think I'll pass on book #3.

This novel started out so promising. Fun, intrigue, spies! But it quickly devolved into sorry cliches, obvious twists and the dialog seemed too modern. I just couldn't imagine men and women in the Regency era speaking so blatantly about sex to each other. (They might've - I certainly wasn't there!)

I'm just really sick of having a woman "choose" between the obvious jerk and the hero. It's dumb. It would've been far more interesting to have both men be good catches, but she really only has chemistry with the hero. That would've been different and a book I'd want to read. (Oh wait, that was The Hunger Games. My bad.)

In a very comical scene, the proud “almost spinster” Poppy who has rejected countless suitors, gets a marriage proposal from a Duke who she thought didn’t exist. Because she thought he didn’t exist, she used him as an excuse to decline all of her past marriage offers.

Nicholas, aka the Duke of Drummond, works for the British Secret Service, and now that Prinny has declared him an Impossible Bachelor, his name will be plastered all over England. Needing to keep a low profile for his job, he needs a bride quick. What he doesn’t know is he is proposing to a very stubborn lady.

Meanwhile, the Russian prince Sergei and his twin sister Natasha are in England, and Poppy has had a huge crush on him since she was 15. She wants to pursue this prince, not be engaged to some Duke. Nicholas has plans for the prince though. The prince has in his possession a portrait that Nicholas needs for his Service work and he soon finds himself aided by the very stubborn Poppy.

I love Poppy. She is so darn proud to be independent and still single. She wants to marry for love, and has stood her ground. When the debacle with Nicholas happens and she is forced into the engagement, she is so mad that this man whom true love does not exist is to become her husband. But when Nicholas flirts and she gives into some physical temptations, she becomes quite the vixen – much to her own disappointment.

She looked down her nose at him. “All right. But I’m not accustomed to people threatening me, staring down my bodice, baldly confessing they’re after my money, and having secrets. I find the whole situation quite reprehensible.” She leaned closer. “And in the oddest way…invigorating.”

I think the romance is really cute and Nicholas is very endearing as he gives Poppy a hard time, and she gives it right back.

I didn’t love the spy plot though. Nicholas is a spy, going after this very silly, conceited Russian prince. Poppy becomes involved and it just was a bit too silly. They have to pretend to like the prince to stay on his good side, all the while the prince is trying to make Poppy become his mistress. The princess is very spoiled and after Nicholas. It just kind of rambles on and the two Russian siblings are too over the top for my tastes. They were funny at first, but it becomes too much.

Kieran Kramer does write very funny, light historicals. The books have a big, loud presence with strong heroes and heroines. Although the spy storyline wasn’t my favorite, I still really like this author’s voice.

This book was okay.
It wasn't bad. But it wasn't great. The heroine turned down multiple proposals from noblemen because she had a crush on a Russian prince she met when she was 15. This was my first meh. She was 21 at this point and I struggled to find it plausible. There is a huge amount of time and growing up and maturing in the 6 years between 15 & 21.

To ward off these suitors she tells them she is nearly engaged to what she believes is a fake duke.

I like the fait accompli trope a lot and wad looking forward to it here. It started off promising but the execution was lackluster.

The hero was a scoundrel and a rake --oh and a spy. Meh. He blew his cover with the heroine pretty much immediately, so he wasn't a very good spy. If you're going to be a spy - at least be decent at it.

The heroine is then allowed to take part in the mission because - what the hell - she will be unmanageable if she isn't allowed to. So, to keep this 21 year old woman from throwing a tantrum, let's give her her own way. Meh.

It was all okay. But just okay.

Dukes to the Left of Me, Princes to the Right (yes quite a mouthful), is the 2nd book in the Impossible Bachelors series. I really loved the first installment and I was very excited to start this one. I read Dukes to the left of Me (for short) very fast. It was a pleasure to read from start to end even if I'm not 100% happy with aspects of the plot. But once again, Kieran portrays great characters you can't help but love.

Lady Poppy has become a master in the art of refusing a proposal. She got a LOT of marriage proposals in the last couple of years. Each time, she refuses, telling her suitor she can't marry him because she's secretly engaged to the Duke of Drummond, that they are in love and will soon marry. Yes, Poppy invented herself a secret admirer to politely refuse her unwanted suitors. Poppy is one bright and fierce young woman . I really liked her and her friends. They decided they'd rather be Spinsters than marry someone they don't love (Good for you girls!). They want to marry for love, they take their future in their own hands rather than let anyone decide for them. Poppy doesn't refuse all these men for no reason, she's been in love with Sergei, a Russian prince, since she was 15, when they met for a week in St Petersburg. She's finally going to see him again after all those years...

Sadly, everything changes when the ,very real, Dukes of Drummond appears one day and asks for her hand in public. As you can see, she can't very well refuse since she's been claiming for years she's been secretly betrothed to him. I really enjoyed the farcical aspect of the situation. It was pretty funny and interesting. Poor Poppy is now engaged to a man she doesn't know when her Prince is finally back in her life. Sergei and his twin sister are very funny characters...funny as in weiiiiird *sing song voice*. I almost felt bad for him at some point. ALMOST lol. There is an aspect of the book I didn't enjoy very much, it's the spy plot. Nicholas Staunton, the Duke of Drummond (Also knows as Lord Maxwell in the previous book), is a spy and he has to marry to 'fly below the radar'. What better choice than to marry the girl who's been telling everyone she was engaged to him for years. There is a scene at the beginning of the book that I found irresistible. When Nicholas asks for Poppy's hand, I was sold. Such a cute and funny book.

As I said, the only thing I wasn't really thrilled about was the spy/secret agents plot which was sometimes a bit predictable. But it was still very difficult to close the book. I really loved the heroes and I had a lot of fun reading this book. I am very excited about this series and I can't wait for the 3rd book to come out. Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage will be released in April 26th, and it'll be about Captain Arrow *g* Woot woot.

I give Dukes to the Left of Me, Princes to the Right 4 1/2 bookies

Nicholas is currently an agent for the British 'Service', unfortunately, he also recently got landed with the title of Duke of Drummond. Which means that he now must get married (a Duke is high in demand for marriage minded mothers and would bring too much attention to him as a Service Agent). Of course this is the worst case scenario for Nicholas, he thoroughly enjoys his bachelorhood and loathes the requirement of marriage that lies ahead of him.

Poppy has been pining after the Prince of Russia that she met 6 years ago and has been waiting for his coming to England all this time, the true tragedy is that she is much too beautiful to be a Spinster and have to wait 6 years for her beloved. What this all means is that she has the misfortune to have to turn down multiple proposals, for the past 3 years, she has been using the name 'Duke of Drummond' as a scapegoat to all of her suitors, claiming that they are madly in love and will soon be engaged. Imagine Poppy's surprise when she realizes that not only does the Duke of Drummond actually exist, but he is extremely handsome, and he proposes to her the very night that she meets back up with the prince again (which of course, she has to actually accept this time because this is her supposed 'true love'.

This was a marvelous book. I'll admit that when I first bought it, I hadn't been expecting much. I had read a few excerpts and was not really anticipating this read because of the parts that I read. Towards the beginning of the book, I still wasn't expecting much, I wasn't really enjoying Poppy's self-denial or either the Prince or Princess (which is to be expected). After a few more pages however, I couldn't put it down. The story line was thoroughly captivating and well done. By the end of the book, I couldn't get enough of the two main characters as well as the side characters (aside from the afore mentioned royalty). Kramer finalized every little twist to the story and left you wanting to read the next in the series. Bravo!

The first book in the series was laugh-out-loud funny for me. This one? Not so much. Instead of seeming endearing and quirky, the characters and the plot came off as annoying and implausible. The plot was as ridiculous as it was in the first one (Poppy makes up a fake suitor to fend off other men, until, ta-da!, fake suitor turns out to be real). And because he needs to take a wife, he just blindly decides to marry this seemingly-crazy woman? Uh, right. I liked Harry and Molly so much, that I was willing to overlook the plot in the first one. This novel, however, doesn't have main characters as likable as that one.

The Russian prince and princess were annoyingly over-the-top. The sex scenes were dull. I didn't really care for any of the characters in the story, except for Poppy's best friends, who were only in a few scenes. Some of the things that happened were beyond ridiculous (such as the corgis and the museum).

It was supposed to be lighthearted, but it just fell flat for me. I probably won't be reading on in the series.

I had fun with this book. Just like her first. Not a lot of thought needed, just a little mystery, two people that like each other while saying they don't and some sexy scenes too. I didn't overthink this one at all and that is OK :). Read it for the fun of it!!

This is Kieran Kramers second book in the Impossible Bachelors series and I thoroughly enjoyed it! If you are in the mood for a light, funny, laugh at loud romance with a delightful, spirited heroine and a dashing, spy hero this is the book for you. We get reacquainted with the second of four Impossible Bachelors, the Duke of Drummond, Nicholas Staunton (though he was know as Lord Maxwell I believe in the first book) who needs to marry to stay a member of the Service. Now, Lady Poppy Smith-Barnes has turned downed numerous proposals because she is a member of the Spinster club....they will only marry for love, nothing else. She always says in her rejection, that her heart belongs to the Duke of Drummond, whom she believes is not real. Needless to say, when the real Duke turns up....she is forced to accept his proposal or be ridiculed by everyone in the ton.
They hi jinks that accrue after this fact are quite fun. Poppy accidentally discovers that Nicholas is working undercover in the Service on a highly sensitive mission and he is forced to tell her the details and enlist her help. Her help comes in handy as they need to stay close to the Prince and Princess of Russia to get a painting away from them. Poppy has had a childhood crush on Sergei since she was a teenager and finds it very easy to be around him, until he reveals his true self to her. And Nicholas, unfortunately, had a brief relationship with Natasha beforehand and is forced to endure her advances, even though he despises her. Ugh, Natasha...what a vile female!! And Sergei is no better! But as Poppy and Nicholas work together, their feelings for each deepen.
The one thing that bothered me with this book was the ending. Once again, like When Harry Met Molly, so much happens in the final chapters it is overwhelming. Its like...bam...bam...bam...and another bam. I just wished some of the secrets had been exposed a bit sooner instead of one right after another. Besides that fact, this is a fun, lively book and I look forward to Ms Kramers third novel, Cloudy With A Chance Of Marriage! 4 1/2 stars

“Dukes To the Left Of Me, Princes To The Right” by Kieran Kramer

Lady Poppy Smith-Barnes is looking for adventure and true love. She has made a promise to herself and to the spinster club, that she belongs to, that she will only marry for true love and nothing less. Lady Poppy has turned down repeated proposals from good men, because she does not love these men. She has also told a white lie, well at least she thought it was a white lie. You see, Poppy thinks that the Duke of Drummond does not exist. She has told all of the men that have proposed to her that The Duke of Drummond is her finance. This is so she can wait for her one and only true love. Lady Poppy is going to be in for the shock of her life when she attends a ball, and in walks the real life Duke of Drummond. Lady Poppy wants adventure, well, she is going to get her adventure with the Duke. Will Lady Poppy marry the Duke of Drummond for real, or will she find a way to get out the marriage proposal without falling in love with him?

Funny, witty and charming is this delightful read of “Dukes To the Left Of Me, Princes To The Right”. Kieran Kramer writes a wonderful novel that will having you smiling all the way through this book right to the end. I could not stop smiling and laughing at the great characters, and witty humor in this book. I have read Kieran Kramer's first book, and loved it. I loved this book just as much! Fantastic job Kieran!

Love this author! She's so wonderful that I went to the library and grabbed her whole collection! Poppy is a wonderful, funny, strong, and very likable character. She is lucky enough in life to be the only daughter to a very wealthy man. She is surrounded by suitable suitors and the marriage proposals abound. She however, unknown to her father and the rest of society, is part of a very small club of her and her closest friends, that have made a promise to one another that they will forever remain spinsters unless they actually find someone that they fall in love with. Because she doesn't want to hurt her suitors when she lets them down, she tells them that she has fallen for someone and that she awaits his proposal. When they demand a name of this suitor she tells them he is the Duke of Drummond... a name chosen from stories told to her by the family cook. Believing he is fictional, she feels completely safe in her lie. That is until one evening she attends a ball and the Duke of Drummond makes an appearance to society and to her! The Duke of Drummond has no interest in going out and trying to find a wife, he has other things on his plate as he works for the secret service. Poppy's lies to her suitors give him just the ruse he needs to continue on with his secret agent life. He comes to find out however that they are perfect for one another in their thirst for adventure and that he wants her to give up her status as a spinster and become his true wife.

DUKES TO THE LEFT OF ME, PRINCES TO THE RIGHT is a sweet and sexy historical romance with a bit of adventure thrown in. I love Kieran Kramer's writing style. It is light, fluffy, and fun. The characters in this story are fun and very well written. I really liked the premise of the relationship between Poppy and Nick. After telling numerous suitors that she was in love with the Duke of Drummond it was very funny to "see" her face to face with the man himself. The secondary characters - especially the Russian Prince and Princess - add a lot to the story. Although, the Russian Princess drove me nuts. Her attitude and what she does drove me nuts. It was the only thing I disliked about the book, but since she is kind of the "villain" of the story I don't think the reader is supposed to like her. The romance is full of sexy times, but nothing too risqué. It was fantastic to read a book where the hero could keep it in his pants and really put the heroines feelings first. If you are looking for a fun, light historical romance this is the book for you. I can't wait to read the next book in the Impossible Bachelors series.

I absolutely love Kieran Kramer. I am saying this after reading only 2 of her books, but she leaves me with such a good feeling when I am done. This is of course book 2 in the Impossible Bachelors series and it did not disappoint. I love that fact that the hero and heroines that she right are so perfect for one another and she always has me laughing out loud. At the end I finish the book and always wonder what is going to happen to every one else. The reason I say that is because all of the characters make an impression and you want to get to know them all.

In this book Lady Poppy has been getting tons of proposal of marriage, but she has her eye on one man in particular, so she makes of a story that she is on the verge of being proposed to by the Duke of Drummond. This way she can turn down the proposal without hurting anyone's feelings and save herself for the man she loves. Little does she know that the Duke of Drummond is indeed real and is about to make her made up story become a reality.

Anyway, if you like Historical Romance or have thought of trying it but haven't, this is the perfect series to get you started.

The first 100 pages were the best, those had me giggling. Later on it was also good, just not as funny. It started to take itself too seriously then. I have never really been overly fond of historical spy novels, sure I can enjoy them but they always feel too fake.

Poppy is a spinster and is so old as 21, omg, horrid (and here I just got used to older heroines where that seems more normal.) Anyway, Poppy wants to marry only for true love and she is in love with a Russian prince.

Nicholas is a spy for the crown and gets told to marry Poppy so he sets his course. And falls for her because she is impossible and wants nothing to do with him. I guess he likes a challenge.

They fight the attraction. But that will not work when they want each other. Of course she wants her prince, and Nicholas tries to avoid a certain princess. Btw, I wanted to wring that bitch's neck at the end. NOT COOL! Ugh, I hate women like that.

Oh the spying, yes it's about a painting and Poppy wants to spy too. Honestly I could have done without the spying. But it was not bad.

Cute and fun.

I found this book slightly more plausible than Kramer's first book, and just as enjoyable. The heroine developed a crush on a Russian prince when she was 15, and has been holding out for him ever since, fending suitors off with a made-up duke. She's in England now, quite a bit older, and the prince has come to England with his sister. They've brought a painting to view. The hero has just inherited a rather obscure title, and his boss insists it's time for him to marry. The heroine. Her dad is tired of her jilting all these people, and has made up his mind she'll accept one of them. Who better than the man who's just taken over the title she thought she'd made up? Problem is, the heroine has sworn she will marry only for love, and she's in love with Prince Sergei. Or is she? It's a cute, light-hearted, sometimes silly story, and a lot of fun to read.

Kieran Kramer isn't an author I'd heard of before, but I will definitely be looking for more of her books on the strength of this one. It's a fun, frothy and funny read, and while there are certainly some anachronisms of speech and action (like I can't imagine a spinster aunt asking her niece to snog her betrothed at a dinner party!) I had no problems putting such concerns aside (which is unlike me, because I'm normally a bit of a stickler). The book is a jolly romp with no pretentions to being anything else; the H&H are attractive characters and while the secondary ones, like Sergei and Natasha are rather one-dimensional, it doesn't matter because the whole thing was pacy and full of energy and had a great sense of fun.
There are times when one wants to read something fluffy and predictable, and this fit the bill admirably.

Holy wow. I give very few 5 star ratings, but this deserves it.

In this tale a young lady who's been turning down proposals due to her love of a pretend duke finds herself face to face with- and engaged to- that very man.

Fabulous characters that sparkle, shine, and have you rooting for them. A refreshing look at "spinsterhood" and women who are independent and strong. Spies and clandestine missions. Plot twists and turns I never saw coming. Oh and plenty of great dialogue and memorable moments.

In short, this book had everything I want from a novel!

NOTE: while this is book #2 in a series, i think it could easily be read and enjoyed as a stand alone novel.

This wasn't an awful book. I think this writer has a lot going for her, a lot of potential. The characters (especially the hero) were quirky and interesting, and her writing style was humorous and easy. But the plot was just too implausible for me. Also, I am no prude, BELIEVE ME, but when characters who have just met are already rounding third base five pages later, it just doesn't work for me. Not only is it wildly improbable for the period, it's wildly improbable, period.

I loved everything about this book! The characters were witty and fresh, the plot was flawlessly layered, and both Poppy and Nicholas's personal journeys were poignant and wonderful. Add Kieran Kramer's charming, lighthearted voice to the mix, and you've got a complete keeper.

The next book in the series, and all of Kramer's books that come after, are a total auto-buy for me. Bravo!

Part of the Impossible Bachelors series.

I was annoyed already by the cutesy abbreviations - IF, MR and OPL. In one sentence no less. Then when the betrothed couple is thrown together for a country house party because the half-blind corgi or a Russian princess swallows the necklace of a woman and they have to wait for the necklace to "pass" I stopped reading.

While I liked Poppy (she didn't take any shit from anyone), I didn't like Nicholas as much. I really hated the 2nd chapter that had him in bed with someone that was not the heroine. Then, that person had to be a reoccurring character that was horrible (of course she was).
A highlight for me was Boris and the pendant. Poop patrol!

Energetic, intermittently amusing, but I won't go back to it. I just didn't get a strong enough sense of character - both hero and heroine came across as a bit two-dimensional. I was intrigued by the imaginary fiancé plot, but it did rather dissolve into a mish-mash of wicked Russian princesses, lost paintings, and improbable events.
