"When I first came around I thought at first I was dead. There was this old bloke with white hair, looking like Old Father Time, peering down at me and he was holding a candle."
This was Peter Simpson's first meeting with Moses Beech. Having been forced by his layabout father to leave school and join the long queues of unemployed Peter decided to leave home and make his own mistakes, instead of following the no hope trail of his parents. But things didn't turn out as he'd imagined, and instead he found himself hiding at Moses' isolated cottage.
At first he scoffed at the oil lamps, well water and antique radio which were part of Moses' isolated life, where the most modern invention was a tin opener. Slowly, his amusement turned to admiration and then envy, although he remained puzzled by Moses' uneasiness about 'outsiders poking their noses into his affairs'. The idea of settling permanently in the valley where Moses lived, being self-sufficient and allowing each day to make its own demands grew more and more attractive; together with the idea of marrying Susan Bailey, the daughter of Moses' only friends. But it was dream which was not to be fulfilled just yet. Susan didn't think it would ever be.
