When Frannie notices her aunt's dog limping, she sees it as her big break to be a vet, so it's off to the veterinarian's office, where she can showcase her doggy-diagnostic skills. But in true Frannie form, all she can pull off is a doggy disaster . . .
I think that I prefered this a bit more to the first one we read (Check Please). This story seemed to have more plot running through it. I thought the Aunts business was a great one for my little reader to remain engaged in the story.
Frannie continues her quest to find the perfect job. This time, she's decided she wants to be a veterinarian. Now, to convince her parents to let her drop out of school to pursue her dream career! Frannie is spunky, hilarious, and prone to trouble. She also has a vocabulary all her own!
Frannie loved to do different job specially the jobs that have offices. When her teacher remarked that Frannie had a way with animals, Frannie quickly decided to get herself a job as a veterinarian's assistant. Vets, of course, all had offices, so that criterion was satisfied. If only her parents would let her retire from school so she could work for Dr. Katz for a while. It was fine...
Not one of my favorites, as kid books go. It's one of those books written with a kid's voice with made up or not quite right words...who talks like that??? That said, Tori thought it hilarious, and she loves when Frannie uses the crazy words. Guess I'm just not the target audience :)
There's no indication in the book itself that this is a Book 2 (other than the subtitle), but it definitely reads like a sequel rather than an introduction. It's easy enough to follow along anyway, but it would be more helpful to know in advance that Frannie is a troublemaker (if accidentally) than to have to figure she is based on Mrs. Pellington's response to Frannie managing to DO AS SHE IS TOLD TO DO when it's her "turn" to take care of the class pet rabbit... ignoring for now that taking turns caring for a class pet feels like a BAD IDEA if at least one of the students doesn't have a homelife conducive to hosting a pet for a day.
Anyway, the general premise is Kids Gonna Kid, and Frannie manages to be the Most Kid by having typical Kid Ideas about how much they know relative to how much they ACTUALLY know (yeah, no personal experience with THAT, haha...), and being surprised when her parents don't magically believe that she just so happens to be Very Good at this thing she JUST decided she wanted to do with her life, namely be a dogs-only veterinarian without needing to go to school for it.
The frustrating part—besides Frannie's hijinks—is actually the idea that they are having a VERY-ALLERGIC-TO-CATS visitor at a house with cats when they only even put the cats in a separate room THE DAY OF before they start cleaning the house. Yes, "Magoo's" broken leg is the reason the meeting is at her house. No, I don't see why they have to meet INSIDE THE HOUSE, except Drama.
I just get entirely too aggravated when allergies aren't taken seriously, for reasons.
Also, as frustrated as Frannie's antics make me, the book IS a safe way to explore the very things that kids get in trouble doing, without the harm of kids actually DOING the things. So, it's a great "What NOT to do" example, which I think young readers would benefit learning from.
The idea of it happening even fictionally still makes me cry, though. :..) (and I still don't get the allergic lady's reasoning, but eh, "happy" ending)
Edit: ALSO I need to criticise the use of crutches in this book. Magoo complains they make her armpits hurt, but she should NOT be resting her armpits in them! All support should be on the handgrips, and the "armpit" rests should be lower than her actual armpits! Furthermore, I don't see how Frannie expected to use them when they're too tall for her. (More kid logic, I suppose.)
3.5 stars. This was a cute story following Frannie as she wants to be a dog only vet. Her aunt ends up needing help after she breaks her leg. Her and her friend go to her aunts house and take the dog to the vet and hijinks ensue. I like that she's not snotty or rude. I don't love that she uses a bunch of words that aren't real in an attempt to sound more grown up. It's cute and funny once but it gets a little excessive.
This book was supposed to be about Frannie and her journey trying to become a veterinarian. There was a lot of stuff going on with a cute story line, but I don’t see how any of it had to do with her wanting to become a veterinarian except for the very beginning and the very end.
I bought this book because it looked really cute & I tutor a little girl who loves dogs. Like I thought, when I gave her some choices she picked this one. I read it after she chose it but I wish I had read it first - I wouldn't have made it an option. Frannie is really cute, but makes up a lot of words and uses sarcasm and switches up sentences so that they don't make any sense. I think if you are a fluent reader it would be a fine thing, but it's not going to be good for this struggling reader I'm working with. The story is simple but cute.
it was kinda sad because they did not trust her. and she just wanted them not to be mad at her. but they kept on getting mad at her and she felt like she only had one friend
Read for Real Men Read; lots of good ideas but the pace seemed to be to slow. Liked the imagination, dreaming of what to be when grown up, fun with wild made up words.
