Captures the drama of the heroic act performed by Grace Darling and her father when, in 1838, they rescued passengers of a capsized steamboat from the waters off the coast of Northumberland
Jessica Lucy Freeman-Mitford was an English author, journalist and political campaigner, who was one of the Mitford sisters. She gained American citizenship in later life.
I want to visit this lighthouse in England because of this brave young woman who rescues people on a rock stranded in the North Sea with her father rowing in a small boat. England fell in love with Grace Darling, and there are many mementos that were created for her. Including a hybrid tea rose, Grace Darling. I also learned about Idawalley Zorada Lewis who was the lighthouse keeper for 52 years at Lime Rock Lighthouse at Newport Harbour in Rhode Island. Jessica Mitford had her own adventurous life. This little book is worth reading especially for young girls to help them understand they can make a difference by speaking up.
The Mitford girls grew up with the “Grace Darling Song”, about the heroic Deed in which Grace and her father rescued nine survivors of a steamship wreck by rowing from their lighthouse home. She became a Victorian celebrity as an emblematically virtuous and dutiful girl, whose image eventually appeared on pottery, candy boxes, in girls’ magazines, and so on. Mitford traces her history and why her story resonated so deeply with the Victorians. Like all her writings, it’s delightfully witty and droll.
Wonderful story of Grace Darling, the girl who, with her father, a Northumberland lighthouse keeper, rescued drowning sailors from a shipwreck and became a national heroine.
Great story of Grace Darling written by an amazing author. Jessica Mitford describes Grace's life in detail and paints a picture of the even that made Grace famous without over-exaggerating.
