From the Loch Ness Monster to the Yeti and Bigfoot, "Phantom Creatures Caught on Film" is a thrilling collection of monster photographs from around the world. Each compelling picture is accompanied by illuminating commentary from paranormal expert and psychical investigator, Dr Melvyn Willin. Five chapters cover everything from extinct species and living dinosaurs, to lake monsters, unknown apes and other creatures. Are these photographs misidentified coincidences or elaborate hoaxes? Or do they present real evidence of mysterious beasts and monsters caught on film? You decide.
It is what it is. Not the worst I have ever read on the subject but I found a typo and immediately, it made it seem like less of an experience. Most of the photos, I had already seen on the Internet. This book would have thrived had it come out in the mid-90s, back when not everyone had access to the Internet and photos like these were still (kinda) sought after.
These days though? This made for a quick read. That's it. Not necessarily interesting (either). The anecdotes preceding each photo were not very insightful (more than was already there in the photo).
Not a complete waste of time but, there are infinitely better ways I could have spent my four hours.
Fairly interesting all around. Most of the photos within were ones I’ve seen before with a couple I haven’t. The text accompanying each picture didn’t really offer much, mostly saying when and where it was taken and, in most cases, not taking one side over the other in regards to authenticity. Nice to skim through every once in a while. You’ll be able to finish it within a day.
A decent coffee table book, a page or so of info on each mysterious creature, and then some photographic "evidence". Obviously, it's not hugely detailed, but it's a nice little coffee table book on the subject.
Fun book filled with monsters caught on film with pictures and stories behind how they came to be on film. Quick little read for those who enjoy the strange and paranormal.
This review will cover all of the books within the series. First and foremost just because you can't explain it doesn't mean it's something paranormal. All the books contain a good helping of the usual blurry photos that happens when someone tries to photography an unknown creature, ufo, or ghosts. You see a blob and yet people supposedly can make out what it is or details. The biggest things that make me doubt reports is that almost every witness says the exact same things just with different details. The most famous includes the I didn't see anything at the time and I was a skeptic until I experienced this. The best is in the monster book where a skeptic became a believer after seeing a large domistic cat and convincing himself it was one of England's mysterious big cats. I have cats who do some weird stuff maybe they're possessed by demons which explains a lot so am I believer now if so who do I call for a cat exorcism?
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others. While keeping the open-minded theme I think Dr. Willin should have done the same when giving approximate 'pre-historic' dates. Is evolution not still a theory?
Enjoyed the photographic essay presented in a thoughtful, step by step manner. Nothing groundbreaking though pleasant and enjoyable. Good introduction to cryptozoology for 'visual' learners.
