These notebooks are based on the stories and images in the books and are a perfect way for kids to record and carry their masterpieces with them.

About the author

Jena has been writing and illustrating animal stories since she was a horse obsessed eight year old begging her parents to buy her a Shetland pony. “When they flat out refused to even consider the idea,” Jena says, “I drafted our Beagle-Cocker Spaniel mix as a stand in. She allowed me to hitch her to my wagon and listened patiently to my daily reports about school and my friends. I could always count on her sweet furry self to be there are the end of my bed each morning and that she would be happy to see me no matter what. That is the gift of animals – unconditional love.”

The CritterKin series of books, about a goofy pack of 8 mixed breed dogs and their leader Ms. Jenaia, is loosely based on real dogs Jena me while volunteering at her local shelter. Her goal is to use stories told through the eyes of the dogs to entertain, engage and teach kids social-emotional skills such as empathy, compassion and kindness. Each book is told through the eyes of one of the 8 dogs and teaches those skills through the lens of a particular topic or issue such as prejudice, fear, feeling different and bullying.

The CritterKin books series is also the foundation for CritterKin’s project based learning, which uses multimedia storytelling and real world projects to give students an opportunity to practice SEL as well as traditional literacy skills and empower them to find and use their voices.
