An easy introduction to yoga and all its benefits. She explains the different styles of yoga (Hatha, ashtanga...) and its history, especially in relation to how it arrived in the West and how it was popularized. Plenty of illustrations on how to perform certain movements. Some movements were explained twice. The book feels a little outdated in regards to the internet. Some website links don't work anymore. I love yoga and do it in my living room with the help of Youtube videos.

This is a very thorough book and a good read for the beginner just learning about the world of yoga. This was a recommended book for the yoga teacher training program I attended. If you want to find out the ins and outs of asana practice, pranayama, meditation and the various styles of yoga out there this book has a very simple break down of each.

Great book to answer basic questions one does not even realize they have about yoga. I liked the wide range of information given about yoga. It has made many things clear for me being a novice.

The K.I.S.S. series of books published by DK Publishing provide a great way to give readers a beginning knowledge of a defined subject. They do what they advertise: walking readers through a subject and helping them build on knowledge as they read, so they are familiar enough with the subject that if they want to learn more, they can pick up other books and gain more in depth knowledge of that subject. The principle of the K.I.S.S. books is to provide information in a way that is easy to understand and fun to read.

This one on the practice of yoga which was published in 2001, is written by a certified instructor who has been practicing yoga since 1972 and teaching it since 1976. She is credentialed as both an instructor and an educator and has written other books on the subject for both adults and children.

Yoga is a very ancient practice which focuses on replacing stress with relaxation, countering negativity with insight and providing strength and courage in the face of conflict. The practice covers a variety of styles, all reviewed here, with one to suit every individual.

The book is divided into five separate parts. The first gives readers a simple understanding of the practice by providing information about yoga’s ancient beginnings, its many health benefits and how it can be practiced by those with a wide range of needs and abilities. In the second section she explores the different styles of yoga from the contemporary to its now more modern forms. Section three explores the practice of meditation and how different forms of prayer and chanting are related to yoga. The fourth section provides health tips for leading a healthy life, integrating yoga into everyday life and recipes for healing foods that come from great yogi chefs. The fifth and final section explores the future of yoga and how combining it with medicine and meditation, it can become a therapeutic modality which helps people live better and more satisfying lives.

The main theme of the book is that yoga is not only a form of exercise but also a way of life and the book focuses on trying to help readers achieve that goal. It provides a simple do it yourself guide to the practice and ways to include its movements and philosophy in whatever life you lead. The text is filled with icons that add to its gentle fun-loving spirit while at the same time imparting knowledge with skill and humour. Some of this is achieved by “The Extras”, small colorful boxes with important points to watch out for and tips from the author’s teaching experience. Other boxes include information that may be important, useful or humourous such as trivia, fun facts and definitions.

The text is interspersed with bright colorful pictures and funny illustrations. There is also a detailed appendix at the back that includes a list of resources, internet websites, yoga organizations and a glossary of terms.

This is a great fun book that not only provides excellent information but can be used for years as a handy reference.

A fun and stress-free way to get acquainted with the principles, history, practice and theory of yoga. I found the first few chapters to be the best. The chapters about specific kinds of yoga were less interesting. The author did a good job informing in a non-judgmental way. I don’t believe in some of the spiritual components of yoga, but I love the practice of it.

This is another excellent DK book. While it was printed in 2001, it holds up well contentwise and physically. The book is on heavy paper with great gaphics and photos. It's a good broad introduction to yoga.

As I go through my yoga books to purge, the DK books are some of the last to go because they are always so well done.

Good for beginners, a pretty high level overview of many facets of yoga practice. Would have been more useful to me 15 years ago
