But he was the only one willing to take her on as apprentice. Then she wins her challenge and her problems only multiply. The rest of England’s wizardry seem determined to challenge her one by one. She somehow becomes the new wizard’s magister and is forced to deal with politics. And even more frightening–Harry has asked her to marry him!

I've been a fan of fantasy, science fiction, fairy tales and other "books of wonder" since I was young enough, I still thought kissing was icky. Then I grew up and decided I liked a strong dose of romance in the mix.

I live on the Texas coast with my fella of 30-plus years, our youngest son (who should be graduating college this semester) and the granddog Dolly, a princess wussy pitbull mix who lets the cockapoo down the street beat her up.

I think I need to re-read the first two books. It's been so long since I've read them that I forgot a lot of stuff - worldbuilding and character info that would make this easier to follow. I wouldn't recommend this as a starting point to the series for that reason.

I enjoyed the clever-dorky magical stuff (it reminds me a bit of Robin D. Owens). I also enjoyed the leads and the inclusion of the main couples of previous books.

The heroine's angst about whether she can follow her passion for magic and still have love and marriage is not going to work for everyone. Nor is the overt sexism or corresponding feminist response.

The hero evolves from over-protective to appropriately protective over the course of the book.

There is some stuff at the beginning about a character who seems to go insane that approached mental health shaming, but that went off in another direction a little further into the book.

I wrote it. I know a lot of people don't think you should put 5 stars on the books you've written, but in my opinion, if you didn't like it, you wouldn't have written it. You Should like your own stuff. Y'all don't have to believe me, but I do hope you will at least read a sample.

Harry Tomlinson has been one of my favorites from the first, and I've always liked Elinor, though she needed a good shake and an airing out. I think she gets one in this story. I had fun figuring out how wizards working with plant magic would have a duel. Turns out, they use wands, but not in the "usual" manner, a la Harry Potter. Alchemists seem to be more like Harry Potter magicians, and my Harry gets his licks in. While writing it, I got an idea for at least one more story in the series. I imagine I'll have to self-publish it too, so we'll see if I get it written.

This is the first Gail Dayton novel I've read, but it won't be my last. I read this one not realizing it was the third novel in a series, but I didn't feel the least bit lost in the setting or unable to follow the story. The world building is delightful and intriguing. I love a bit of magic mixed with a spunky Victorian romance. I loved Harry and Eleanor apart and together, although I wanted to give her a good shake once or twice. Once I reached the end and discovered the reasons for her obstinacy, I was less inclined to judge her. Harry was a bit rough around the edges and delightfully charming. He won me over straight away. I look forward to reading the two previous Blood Magic novels and hope that Gail will continue this series.

The author's added in enough interesting characters and left enough strings dangling at the end to write at least 3 more novels in this series. I hope she does expand the series. 😍👍

The magical lore is complex enough to compare to the Potterverse. But it's weakened by the fact that it's too dependent on Sorcery. The author needs a romantic pairing without Sorcery or the bond of Familiars, just to keep it varied and interesting.

The romance is well written, but after three romances, you can feel the similarities seep in. So maybe the next romance needs to be totally different?! Not the same bit about a woman needing a broad-minded male champion to help her navigate through a hopelessly sexist world. Maybe even a same-sex romance, between two women...?! Just no more Sorcery, please!! Enough about that!

My favourite guy lead of the three was Harry, but I'm not sure what my favourite romance was. Maybe the Jax/Amanusa one...? 🤔 I didn't like Elinor, so not her and Harry. And I didn't like Grey, so not him and Pearl, either. (Both Grey and Elinor were borderline abusive towards their partners!!) I didn't have a favourite female lead, maybe because all that Sorcery repetitiveness put me off the females!!

🚨Warning: SPOILERS are in my reading timeline for this novel...🚨

I'm very annoyed that this is the only book in the series that the library had because I adored the world building and know I would have seen more of it if I'd had access to the preceding books

Random notes:

Dead zones, still here, still unresolved, again.

More smut than the two previous ones.

Magic battles.

Demons, again.

Marriage, again.

Magic attacks straight after sex, again.

Blood magic, again.

Familiars, again.

Protagonists fail to acknowledge in time that they're in love, again.

Silly misunderstandings, again.

Should have expected all of the above, again.
