About the author

Todd McFarlane is a Canadian comic book artist, writer, toy manufacturer/designer, and media entrepreneur who is best known as the creator of the epic occult fantasy series Spawn.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was one of America's most popular heroes in the 1990's and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.

In recent years, McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio.

In September, 2006, it was announced that McFarlane will be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by Curt Schilling.

McFarlane used to be co-owner of National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers but sold his shares to Daryl Katz. He's also a high-profile collector of history-making baseballs.

More a ☆☆☆ volume than ☆☆☆☆, but the Set-Up two issues storyline was good and the Freak issue, essentially an action-packed American Psycho style tale enriched by Alan Moore's dialogues, was a funny grotesque gem for me.



And the Greg Capullo-Tony Daniel-Kevin Conrad artist dream-team is a real ☆☆☆☆☆ one for me.

So, I'm still loving the world-building and it's super fun seeing a character I remember and love show up.

But I'm still not in love with this enough to give it five stars: I want to see the storylines pulling together and I don't feel like they are yet. I'm not sure if McFarlane really knows where this is going yet, but it's a fun ride getting there so far.

Another pretty good TPB, the story is starting to feel like more than Spawn Vs X. We're getting hints that both heaven and hell have their own agendas when it comes to Al Simmons.
The Violator makes a comeback and starts pulling some strings to make Spawns afterlife even worse.
Plus The Freak storyline was awesomely twisted but seemingly pointless (it's obvious he'll be back).
Hopefully the Cy-Gor storyline they introduced in the last issue won't fall back into just another cool fight that vaguely alludes to an overreaching plot line.

Alright, man. Can someone, please tell me, if in the next volume, the story is evolving somewhere? I mean, it's cool to see our ugly, bad ass Spawn protecting the weak in his stinking alley, but man, i really don't see his vengeance story, or even this heaven and hell war going anywhere! On the last volume, we saw a little development in this matter, along with some nice close chapters, but, on this one we got stucked again. I feel like, Al is always trying to follow his path of vengeancr, trying to get Wynn, Terry and everyone, but someone always come to tell him to wait, to think about it and all of this bullshit. Man just never does what he wants. And he is like, a soldier from hell!

Jesus, really, i think i will stop with this series for a while and go to another books. Mr. Mcfarlene and his crew really lost me on this one.

The Violator has been training hellspawn for centuries. He, like others in hell, are disgruntled that Malebolgia chooses human souls to lead the forces of hell, instead of hell's own denizens. They are too afraid to say anything about it, but Violator has reached the tipping point with the current Spawn.

Spawn's suit undergoes a change that should not have happened so soon. This gives him an advantage in fights and also worries his adversaries from hell. Violator allies with Jason Wynn to make Spawn's life a living hell. Spawn has a flashback that reveals Wynn as the man who ordered Al's death.

Terry is promoted to work under Wynn. This may help him find out more about his previous wanted status. Strangely, he chooses to try to stop Spawn when the latter decides to confront Wynn about ordering the death of Al Simmons, Spawn's previous self. The many defenses at Wynn's disposal force Spawn to retreat. He runs to Wanda in the hope of convincing her that Terry betrayed him and took advantage of her. She is too scared for her life and that of her child Cyan to believe anything he says.

Slowly inches forward the big plot of Spawn in these one-shot-kind-of stories. So much talking and so much good looking fast action. Not bad but not sheer brilliance either.

This was a good volume. This collection is made up of mostly one-shot stories, but it gets closer to Spawn's main goals. The drama is TENSE in this volume, as Spawn gets close to killing Wynn, he has a battle with Violator (again), he finally meets Wanda face-to-face and the meeting does not go how he played it out in his head, and his friendship with his best friend, Terry, has collapsed! The exciting part of this volume is a guest writing spot from Alan Moore. Overall, this was a fun volume to read.

Volume 6 is a bit all over the place. There's a confrontation with Wynn and the stuff with the police captain is suddenly all swept under the rug without explanation. The last two issues introduce the Freak and Cy-Gor. The two issues seem disjointed though as 37 ends on a cliffhanger that's forgotten about in 38. The art still looks fantastic, even with McFarlane drawing very little of it at this point. The writing though is still "eh".

This issue boasts impressive art, exciting action sequences, and a compelling new character in the Freak, but the plot's glacial pace prevents it from reaching its full potential.

-Freak storyline is dope and interesting
-Wynn, Terry, Sam & Twitch...ugh so boring. Nothing is happening!!
-Horror themed story introducing Cygor was sick too. More issues that read like a horror movie would be great.
-I’m going to keep making it thru the series, but I am desperate for a boss fight that actually moves the plot forward in a serious way.

Nothing earth shattering in this volume, spawn's lore and characters in this universe keep expanding and that is great. On a couple of issues we got some new wrtiers and these were both good an bad because the new writers did not pick up from were Spawn left off, but added cool new characters to the universe, Todd eventually does come back to the writing so it feels like the universe is moving forward from were it left off. Will still keep reading.

Art is pretty great, some really badass looking designs and fights. But the writing? Pretty much the exact opposite, garbage at best. The story blend together to make the most typical 90's garbage storylines, big bad ugly fat villains, and stupid as hell monologs that gave me a headache. Great art though.

Finally something happens again in Spawn. Over the past 2 Volumes nothing really happened, just Spawn moping around in his street corner. But, finally we have some interesting world building and action in a issue again. A return to form after two really boring Volumes. This is easily my new favorite Spawn issue.

This one was good until the end. Spawn, did you have to screw up your relationship with both Terry and Wanda?!?! They’re both trying to get closer to Wynn to destroy him! Are you going to realize they have the same idea as you sooner than later? Hopefully in the next issue, he’ll be better

Crisp, detailed, flamboyant art and story in these one shots bringing the story further along the Spawn crusade. The guided read thru on a larger format tablet is a blast with the Hoopla app (and of course a library card). And the vibrancy is a delight. More, please.

I dig the art, but I just ripped through three collections (about fifteen issues of material), and absolutely nothing happens. I think this is a series I'm going to have to read in bits and pieces, because it's a slog right now.

Decent continuation in the Wynn saga. Couple of one shots, origin of Freak and Cy-Gor. Kinda silly how Spawn runs away when getting shot at but has a giant hole through his chest from getting shot by a cannon previously. Shouldn't expect any sense though.

A lot of set-up this volume but the art really comes together here. I'm not sure how much is McFarlane and what is Capullo, but the overall SPAWN looks are here. We also meet The Freak and Cy-Gor.

Still an enormous amount of fun.

The art and design of these comics is sumptuous. A glorious comic to read and a pleasure to admire. It has its own style, its nor cold hard reality but it does work in its own terms. I loved the art.

The story is fun. A bit over dramatic at times, a bit preachy and knowing and there is way too much exposition for my taste but it is the authors style and I have grown accustomed to it so it did not take me out of the tale.

I'll keep going. These collected editions were a bargain.
