Tiivistäen jokaisen kirjassa olevan eläimen esittelyn:
Me täällä Todella outojen ja omituisten otusten seurassa olemme sitä mieltä, että kärpästä ei kannata kutsua mukaan bileisiin, koska ne syövät sontaa. Kärpäset ovat jännittäviä olentoja, jotka lentävät ympäriinsä ikkunoihin törmäillen. Joskus ne törmäilevät myös lamppuihin, mikä onkin syy, miksi ne on otettu mukaan *Omituisten otusten Ensyklopediaan*. Kannattaa muistaa, että kärpäset oksentavat ruokansa päälle saadakseen sen sulamaan, joten niitä ei kannata ottaa juhliin mukaan, koska useimmat ihmiset pitävät oksentelua ällönä. Me täällä Todella outojen ja omituisten otusten seurassa tiedämme toki joidenkin ihmisten myös pitävän oksentamisesta, mutta he ovat pieni vähemmistö. Tai näin ainakin olisi parasta olla, jos minulta kysytään.

- Todella, todella rasittava kirjoitustyyli. Sisältää tosi paljon pervoja vitsejä, joten ei voi suositella nuoremmille lukijoille.
- Samaa vitsiä toistetaan parhaillaan useita kertoja samassa esittelyssä ja koko kirjan aikana jopa satoja kertoja. Vitsit ovat myös luokkaa "jos kutsut tuhatjalkaisen luoksesi, muista ottaa ovesta 'pyyhi jalat' -kyltti pois, öhöhöhö" ja "ehehe, pikapano, lunttu-pingviini". Jos kuulostaa hauskalta, kuvittele, että vitsin kertomiseen on käytetty kokonainen sivu.
- Kammottavaa jaarittelua ja 90% tekstistä kertoo ihan mistä tahansa paitsi esitellystä eläinlajista.
- Eläimiä jaetaan pahiksiin ja hyviksiin ihan sen perusteella, onko ne söpöjä vai ei.
- Huonot kuvat. Joskus ei ole edes kuvaa esiteltävästä lajista.
- Paljon virheellisiä faktoja
- On epäselvää, mitä eläinlajia käsitellään, koska lajeja ja ryhmiä käsitellään sekaisin.
Ajattelin, että kirja olisi hauska ja kevyt lukea, mutta ei tästä voi nauttia, kun jo yksinkertaisimmat eläinfaktat ovat sekaisin: etanoihin viitataan "femme fataleina", mettä kerääviä mehiläisiä luullaan uroksiksi, dodojen sukupuutto syynä pidetään sitä, että linnut olivat "herkullisia" ja sekava kirjoitustyyli piilottaa sisälleen monia muitakin epämääräisyyksiä*. Tämän lisäksi on turha luulla, että kirja olisi uskollinen edes nimelleen tai takakannen kuvaukselle eli kirjassa ei tosiaan esitellä eläinlajeja, vaan sattumanvaraisesti lajeja tai ryhmiä, jotka voivat sisältää jopa tuhansia eri lajeja. Miksi? Eivätpä kai seurassaan tienneet niiden eroa. Eläimiä ei myöskään valita kirjaan omituisten piirteidensä takia, vaan esim. sen takia, että niiden ympärille on kietoutunut jokin ihmisten tekemä historiallinen tapahtuma (sota lannoitteista).
Kannattaa kokeilla, jos pitää huonosta huumorista ja tahtoo oppia vääriä faktoja eläimistä.

This is a great little encyclopedia and I loved it and it normally would have gotten four stars but I’m docking one because HOW DO YOU NOT INCLUDE A PLATYPUS IN AN ENCYCLOPEDIA LIKE THIS

What? No platypus!?!? How is that possible. This book was a nice distraction while suffering from horrid flu. As a biologist I learned very little new. Osedax, bone-easting worms, I had never hear of.

This volume surveys such creatures as the microscopic water bear, which can withstand 1000 times as much radiation as a human; the male hooded seal, which doubles the size of its head by inflating the lining of its nostril; and the Jesus Christ lizard, which runs on water. My fellow danger fans will be happy to know that it also includes some old friends of ours, like the candiru, which swims up the human urethra and "sticks out a spike so it can't come out, even if you ask it really, really nicely, and offer it all sorts of cash incentives." On the tendency of vampire bats to share their meals with each other, Sir P. remarks, "All very well, if indeed the idea of vampires vomiting blood into each other's mouths is all very well."
Pilkington-Smythe is hilarious, but he's also well informed, and if you're not careful, you'll learn a lot from this book. The star-nosed mole gives him occasion to mention the ten (not five) human senses, and the mating habits of the right whale lead to a discussion of sperm competition.
I wish I had the vocabulary to tell you how beautifully designed this book is. It's the most gorgeous volume on nature I've seen since Eyelids of Morning. Highly recommended.
Pilkington-Smythe is hilarious, but he's also well informed, and if you're not careful, you'll learn a lot from this book. The star-nosed mole gives him occasion to mention the ten (not five) human senses, and the mating habits of the right whale lead to a discussion of sperm competition.

Am LOVING this funny little gem. Sir Pilkington-Smythe is a fantastic pseudonym for an even more fantastic persona. He gives quick descriptions of real animals that really are out of this world. The humor might be a bit crude for younger kids, but for teens and adults, just fine.
Here's a snippet about the cassowary:
"Fact: Incidentally, the cassowary was not the most fearsome bird that ever lived. That title must go to the rather delightful-sounding "terror birds" that took over from the predatory dinosaurs when they decided they didn't like the planet after all. You really wouldn't want to mess with this fiend -- it was about nine feet tall and it ate horses. Thankfully, this particular beaky bastard is not with us any more."

Hauska tapa oppia uutta maapallomme erikoisimmista otuksista. Monet eläimet olivatkin tuttuja, mutta kirjassa oli ainakin minulle monia uusia ja mielenkiintoisia faktoja niihin liittyen. Brittihuumori oli ajoittain ylitsepursuavaista, mikä ei kyllä minua häirinnyt. Toisaalta se jätti vähän miettimään käännöstä ja toivomaan, että vitsejä olisi muutettu käännettävän kielen kulttuuriin sopiviksi. Monet ranskalaisvitsit esimerkiksi menivät vähän yli, koska ranskalaisista vitsaileminen ei oikein tuntunut tutulta. Tästä kaikesta huolimatta nautin kirjan lukemisesta erittäin paljon ja sain monet hyvät naurut samalla. Suosittelen kaikille eläinmaailmasta hiukkaakaan kiinnostuneille lukemaan tämän opuksen, jonka tarkoitus on opettaa ja samalla viihdyttää lukijaansa.

Kirjan ulkoasu houkuttelee lukemaan - se onkin tämän teoksen ehdoton vahvuus. Itseäni miellytti myös tarkan nippelitiedon määrä. Sen sijaan eritehuumori joka toisella sivulla toistettuna alkaa kyllästyttää, jos yrittää lukea kirjaa yhdeltä istumalta. Myös muutama outo suomenkielen kukkanen pisti miettimään että olisiko teos parempi englanninkielisenä?

I was thinking of giving this to my little brother. It was a Christmas present, though. I know a lot of these creatures beforehand for reading Science Illustrated so it didn't offer me a lot of information.

I thought the concept and design of this book was incredible, but it missed its mark because the intended audience was unclear. It seemed that the text was too childish for adults but it was too long and complicated to be meant for young adults and kids.
