5 stars – Romantic Suspense

This series is one of my favorite indulgences. I mean you just can’t go wrong with yummy as sin firefighter heroes, smokin’ HOT sex that’s way steamier than most mainstream romances, Jerry Bruckheimer summer blockbuster worthy suspense, and studtastic cover hunks. And oh yeah, did I mention sexy firefighters having blazing hot sex?

Only this time around we get two firefighters setting the sheets on fire! Recovering alcoholic Captain Sean Tanner is still grieving the loss of his wife and family and trying to make amends with his Station Five crew. The last thing Sean expected was to become romantically entangled with his younger female subordinate, Eve Marshall. Eve’s been in lust and love with Sean for years, despite that he’s always been unavailable and unattainable in some way or another, first off limits as a married man and her boss and then because he was emotionally damaged. But Sean is finally sober and on the road to recovery, and loyal, caring Eve might be exactly what he needs to kindle his neglected libido and heal his shattered heart.

It’s another emotional, erotic, and action-packed addition (finale?) to the awesomely hot Firefighters of Station Five series!

Sexy, tortured hero – Check!

Strong, supportive heroine – Check!

Steamy sex with Jo Davis’s signature, random anal play scene that’s a bit surprising for a mainstream romance – Check!

Somewhat outlandish suspense plot involving a crazed stalker villain – Check!

Drama and angst – Check!

Funny moments and fire station house humor – Check!

Hot firefighters having more hot sex – Check!

Finally, at long last, Sean's story--and it's a good one! Fans of this series know that author Jo Davis has been building and building to telling Captain Sean Tanner's story, and I must say I was not disappointed. In this book, Sean finally gets his act together--and I was so happy to see that. In the previous books (and yes, you should read them in order) Sean was on a downward spiral into alcoholism after witnessing the horrifying deaths of his wife and children in a traffic accident. Sean takes to the bottle to help himself cope, and finally hit rock bottom in the previous book (Line of Fire). In Trial By Fire, Sean deals with his guilt for not being able to save his family, faces his problem with alcohol one day at a time, makes ammends with his fellow firefighters for letting them down, and embarks on a hot new romance with a woman who has longed for him since the beginning of this series. He also finds out that the death of his family may not have been an accident after all, and faces off with a foe from his long ago past who is determined to destroy him and his future happiness.

I really enjoyed this book. The books in this series are always fast reads for me--Jo Davis has a way of telling a story so that you do not want to put the book down! After all that Sean has been through (and we relive his tragedy through his eyes in this one) I've been really pulling for him to get his act together and to have some measure of happiness in his life again. I was so happy for him when he decided to let fellow firefighter, the beautiful, tough but feminine, 30-ish, biracial Eve into his life. Truthfully, I thought he was going to protest a little more than he did! Sean and Eve were smokin' hot together--expect plenty of heat when you read their bedroom scenes. Sean may be the 'old guy' at the fire station at 43, but you'd never know it the way he acts with Eve.:)

The suspense part (as far as who the villain was) wasn't all that suspenseful. We know who he is, we know what he's up to, we know he's out for revenge, but we don't know why. But JD fills us in chapter by chapter, as she goes back into Sean's past almost 20 years ago, and we see how Sean's former friend becomes his foe. This builds to a somewhat suspenseful conclusion where Sean (in Jo Davis fashion) gets the stuffing beat out of him (but not as bad as poor Zack in his book)!

So this was a very solid read for me. Not my favorite of the series (that would be Hidden Fire) but still a good book. I loved Sean and Eve together, there was plenty of heat, loved catching up with all the other firefighters from the previous books, and the storyline, while not the most suspenseful, was still pretty exciting. I don't know if this was the last book of the series, but it sure felt like it to me. If it is, Jo Davis wrapped it up quite nicely. If there's a spin-off in the works, it's got to be about Detectives Taylor Kayne or Shane Ford, or FBI man Nick Westfall. If it is--sign me up! 4 stars

Opening Line: “On the night the world ended, Blair Tanner had told her husband to go to hell.”
~4.5~ Ride The Fire is the final book from the suspenseful and oh-so-sexy Firefighters of Station Five series and here, at last we get Sean Tanner’s story. Like everyone else I’d been anxiously waiting for him and fellow firefighter Eve to get their groove on -I mean this is a guy that really deserves a decent HEA, after losing his wife and children and then battling the bottle for the entire series. So I’m happy to say that despite a few silly moments Davis does our boy justice, sucking me in completely with this exciting and romantic story.

With another action-packed storyline, some fun moments (hello fireman auction) and her usual flair for the scorching love scenes Davis also provides a worthy adversary from Sean’s past to beat him up, blow him up and generally make things interesting. I also appreciated her somewhat bittersweet ending, learning the future of all of our Station 5 team while opening up a possible window (?) for another series with the introduction of several hunky police officers.

As a whole this is a fantastic series that I’ve really enjoyed, I mean how could you not? With hard bodied firefighter heroes, erotic love scenes and exciting storylines it’s always a great ride. And while Davis takes it pretty easy on Sean here (she may have felt he’d suffered enough already) Part of the fun in reading these books is also the anticipation of how many trips to the hospital our heroes will have to endure before they get the bad guy and win the girl. Jo Davis just loves to beat up her men and it’s become a bit of a game for me counting the injuries. I also like how all the books are connected with updates from past characters and continuing story arcs. Here we get to catch up with all the boys and girls from “A’ shift with special mention given to my still favourite, Howard“6-pack”yumminess.

Fresh from rehab Captain Sean Tanner is just learning to live without the crutch of alcohol that has kept the heartbreak and nightmares of losing his family at bay. He’s also trying to regain the trust of his team after almost killing one of them. The last thing he needs now is to get distracted by a woman especially one that he works with. But how has he never noticed fellow firefighter Eve Marshal before? And as her boss how can he avoid her?

We’ve all known that Eve’s been in love with Sean since the very beginning and watching these two finally get together was explosive to say the least. Their first night is just wow. Can you say pent up passion. Of course this little tryst is bound to get found out by the guys at the station and then it’s going to cost one of them their job. That is if Sean doesn’t pull a runner first, because he’s still a mess and convinced Eve would be better off not getting involved in his chaotic life. And then of course we have the terror from Sean’s past coming back to haunt him in the form of an old Military “pal” Jesse Rose. Best friends since childhood Jesse and Sean served in the Marines together, until that fateful night. Now it seems Jesse is back with an agenda and Sean’s past is about to catch up with him. Cheers people

howard is still my favorite, but i really liked sean and eve. i've been waiting for this and it definitely didn't disappoint.

i'm half wishing for another book, because i love these people, but the other half thinks there is no way there could possibly be more drama and disaster at one single firestation.

i loved this whole series and jo knows how to write some smokin hot sex, that's for damn sure.

3.5 stars rounded to 3. It might have been 4 if it wasn’t full price, I’d i got it for “free” on KU. But if I have to pay money, more than $5, then I’m gonna expect more from my books.

This is supposed to be kinda suspenseful, it wasn’t.

It was supposed to be romantic, it wasn’t that much either.

It was fast paced, but in a way that didn’t leave room or time for anything deeper, just superficial. I wanted to like both MCs, but I’m not entirely sure Tanner deserved the unconditional love from Eve. And when she fell in love with him, he was still married with children.

The marriage was falling apart and the wife cheated but still...

And after his family died in the horrific way that they did... I’m not sure it was very realistic for him to move on even if it was after 2 yrs of drunkenness.

The whole book was kinda scratching the surface. Nothing was really delved into with any depth. The feelings between the MCs didn’t feel real.

I dunno... not entirely sure I liked the book. It was just so so

Yes, finally Sean's story. Yes, he's finally gotten his act together. And yes, finally not a disappointing book.

I don't know about you, but I was getting a little fed up with Ms. Davis and this series. I mean, what's there not to like about a bunch of hunky firefighters, a bit of suspense, and a whole lotta lovin'? Well, if the delivery sucks it all goes down the drain. And I'm sorry to say Ms. Davis' delivery sucked more than it was good where this series is concerned.
Fret no more, this book delivered and it delivered nicely. Pity it's the last one in the (firefighters) series, but if there's a spin-off about the three law-enforcement guys so far playing second fiddle, I'm with Auntee on this one, sign me up!

I'm glad Ms. Davis decided to get her act together with Sean's book, because the guy more than deserved it after all he's been through (and put us readers through). We didn't get the privilege of meeting him when he was the man everybody admired, but instead got the beginning of a wreck which we followed to lowest ring of Hell in the previous book when Sean finally hit rock bottom.
The second intervention worked, though, and Sean is back. Clean, sober, and working his ass off trying to get his life back on track and regain his friends' trust.

The journey to hell and back has been agonizing, tiring, dramatic, dangerous, and the future at the end of the previous book looked grim for out firehouse captain. But he came back with a vengeance, determined to get his life in order, not to disappoint anybody...And with the help of his friends, but mostly a newfound (old) flame, he made it.
It was a bitter-sweet story, filled with ups and downs, fears and joys, heart-rendering moments, tears, and laughter. The characterization was great, the drama of alcoholism taken head-on, the pacing was good, and it was great seeing all the firefighters and their significant others we met in the previous books. Pity, they "felt" more real to me in this one as secondary cast than they did in their respective books.

The only bone I have to pick with Ms. Davis is the suspense plot. Is it just me or did the firefighters of station five see more action than there is in a "gangsta" flick? What is it about hunky firefighters attracting bad guys like honey? And they all work together! Sheesh.
The suspense in these books always seemed a bit far-fetched for me, a little too convenient to put the male and female together, tie up loose ends at the end. Sorry, I just don't buy it.
As I didn't buy it in this book. Yeah, the revenge plot was rather good, but everything else going on with it (that never really came to fruition) left much to be desired...Also, these guys were supposed to be tight, despite Sean's downfall. Was it too much to ask for Tommy to mention the villain's name after his happily-ever-after? All it would take would be a name for Sean to put two and two together immediately. But then we wouldn't have had a story. Oh well.

The rant is officially over. The verdict: this was the best book in this series. Seeing it didn't get five stars is says a lot.

Keeping my fingers crossed to get to see more of Shane, Taylor, and Dominic. Keeping my toes crossed not to get disappointed by their stories.

Ride the Fire is the fifth book in Jo Davis’s Firefighters of Station Five series. The hero is Captain Sean Tanner, an intriguing, emotionally scarred man who became an alcoholic (which is shown in detail over the past four books leading up to this one) due to loss of his wife and two children who died in a deadly car accident. Sean arrived on the scene to late and watched his family go up in flames. He has lived with the guilt ever since, and due to his drinking, has become a danger on his job. Sean finally wakes up and gets the help that he needs.

Sean is now a clean man and welcomed back with open arms by his crew, especially Eve, who Sean suddenly has the hots for. His feelings for Eve have been building slowly below the surface, but he ignored them due to the memory of his wife and his obsession with loosing himself in the bottle. Eve Marshall has always admired Sean, but has kept her feelings for this older man a secret. But now it seems that Sean is open to something different with Eve. Both know an affair wouldn’t be a good thing because Sean is her supervisor, but since their lust is overflowing, they throw caution to the wind and get down to business.

Now you’d think Sean would finally be free of the demons that have haunted him. But that’s not the case, and someone from his past makes himself known. He taunts Sean about the accident that claimed his family and it may have not been an accident at all, but revenge against Sean.

Every single book after Trial by Fire, which I adored to pieces, have been downhill reads for me. The same goes for Ride the Fire. I found Sean and Eve to have gone through personality transplants. I felt like I was reading about two different people I’ve never met before. The sex was pretty dull and not all that interesting. There’s a lot of “I’m coming”, “oh baby’s” and “ride me hard, all night long” with Seam trying to be the alpha male in the bedroom. But in the end it’s pretty ho-hum vanilla type variety stuff. That is, until Jo writes a scene that supposed to shake things up and should be erotic. My prudish side does not find the use of cooking oil as a lubricant for some hot finger in the butt butt action in the kitchen to be sexy. And considering the sexual tone of Ride to Fire is pretty tame, this butter my bun came out of left field and has left much to be desired. Why use KY when good old Crisco is readily available for those sudden passionate encounters in the kitchen?

The suspense and the reasons behind the villain needing to take down Sean is unbelievably lacking in the tension and excitement department. Overall, Ride the Fire is just plain too predictable and yet another unforgettable read.

The fifth book in the Firefighters of Station Five series by Jo Davis. Capt. Sean Tanner, of Station Five, lost his family to tragedy and drown his sorrows in alcohol. Out of rehab, Sean is learning to live without the bottle. Firefighter Eve Marshall has been in love with the captain for a while but he has been oblivious to it.

A wonderful addition to the series. Very heart-wrenching at times but it all comes together in the end.

I was anticipating Sean and Eve’s story, so I’m wondering if I had my expectations too high. This was a quick, fast paced read as most all of the Station Five books are. However, I felt like there was something missing. I was happy to see my favorite, Six Pack, was featured pretty often since he is Sean’s best friend. I’m sad the series is over. 

Excellent sex scenes. Above average plot and motives. Good characters. But - insulting stupidity during the last 10%.

STORY BRIEF:
Sean is a firefighter. His wife wanted him to attend his son’s football game, but Sean worked instead of taking off. After the game, his wife, son, and daughter died in a car accident. Due to grief and guilt for not being there, Sean drank too much, was negligent at work causing injury to another, and went into rehab. It’s now two years after the accident, and Sean is back at work. He no longer touches alcohol.

Eve works in Sean’s group as a firefighter. She and Sean are attracted to each other and act on it. He feels guilty being happy. He fears being hurt if he has another relationship. They both are concerned about what to do at work since he is her boss.

A killer wants to hurt Sean. Threats, damages, and harm to others are happening. Throughout the book there are flashbacks to about twenty years earlier showing Sean and his best friend Jesse in the military.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
This was a 4-star story until the last 40 pages or so. Then stupidity ruined it.

The Good:
It’s a good romantic suspense story - very complete regarding plot and motives. The sex scenes were good. I enjoyed his take-charge in the bedroom. My thoughts during those scenes were good, hot, passionate, loved it. There is one scene with rear door activity.

Both Sean and Eve are likeable and enjoyable to read about. Sean is handsome, intelligent, competent, and courageous in saving lives. Eve is loving, loyal, and willing to forgive when he hurts her due to his psychological wounds. Eve’s mother is black, her father white. She has dark skin and blue eyes. They have a neat relationship.

The Bad:
Unfortunately the good guys did stupid things. Sean and the police knew a killer was after him, yet he continued to go places and do things without a weapon or police protection. Of course he was attacked. Then he was hurting and went to bed. Eve needed to buy some Tylenol for him. She didn’t know the password for his home security system, and she didn’t want to wake him to ask. So she turned off the system thinking she would only be gone for twenty minutes. Of course something bad happened. But the worst stupidity was at the end which made me furious. It’s in the Spoiler below.

The Flashbacks:
I usually don’t like flashbacks because I feel both the current and past stories are being interrupted. But the flashbacks in this book didn’t bother me. Each flashback was short which was good. Also, not knowing the full flashback story kept the bad guy’s motives and identity hidden until toward the end - which was good.

OTHER BOOKS:
I’ve reviewed the following Jo Davis books.
4 stars. When Alex Was Bad. Lots of erotic sex including MM. Pretty good mystery suspense.
3 ½ stars. Trial by Fire (Firefighter series #1). Pretty good but too much helpless victim theme.
3 stars. Ride the Fire (Firefighter series #5). Above average but stupidity at the end.
3 stars. I Spy a Wicked Sin. Lots of erotic sex but not enough emotional connection or relationship development.

DATA:
Story length: 310 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 5. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 18. Setting: current day Sugarland. Copyright: 2010. Genre: romantic suspense thriller.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

CAUTION SPOILER:
I usually shake my head at stupidity for the sake of the plot, but this was so bad I was insulted. Bad guys kidnap Sean and Eve, tie their hands and feet, and put them in a sewage tunnel under the street. Explosives are also there, ready to blow. Bad guy says he will return shortly. They get untied. Sean tells Eve to go and get help. He will stay to dismantle the explosives. She leaves and brings back police who are standing around deciding what to do. She then goes into the tunnel alone, with no weapon, to help Sean. The bad guy grabs her and holds a gun to her head. Why didn’t she take the police with her? Why didn’t she send the police down to help Sean?

This is what happens when my expectations get too high.
The book was good, but I've been waiting so long for Sean's story that I ended up a little dissapointed.
I was so excited to finally see him sober and in love with Eve, but I didn't feel the conection between them, also the rest of the members of the station were completely absent and I missed them like crazy. Is this really the last book of the series? it's not fair...I want to say a proper goodbye to my sexy firefighters.

This book and the previous book #4 in this series Line of Fire were improvements over the first three books in the series, imo. My biggest peeve of the series up through book #3 was that I felt a dearth of fire-fighting to justify these characters being actual fire-fighters. The last two books seemed to remedy that. There was a definite up-tick in the work element.

I was looking forward to this one the most because Sean's story arc that began in book #1, as the embattled alcoholic who was trying to numb the pain of watching his family die and his daughter burn alive, was really intensely interesting and carried me through the series quite a bit. I also am a sucker for unrequited love (when done well). I thought Eve's quiet longing for Sean throughout the series was quite affecting and a great set up for when they finally got their story. I was already so invested in them that I connected with them immediately while reading.

So while one of my biggest dissatisfaction with the series so far has been somewhat addressed, my other big problem with the series was still in full force in this book. The villain. I think the villains have been the achilles heel for this whole series. They were too broadly written, no nuance whatsoever. We get a lot of their inner dialogue and planning. And unfortunately much of it sounds like it could have been accompanied by evil laughter and ominous piano music.

The romance and the connection between the couples remains the strongest element in these books. And frankly it was what kept me coming back even with the eye-rolling villains. Sean and Eve were no different. They have incredible chemistry and squeaked past Howard and Kat from the first book Trial by Fire as my favorite couple of the series (Howard, though, remains the series MVP, love that guy!)

I was happy to see Sean working through his demons finally and accepting Eve's love. They even had a few bumps that were nicely realistic. Eve is also a fantastic character. She had been established throughout the series as a tough, straight shooter who was one of the few who had no problem confronting Sean while he was drunk. Her character remains true in this book. She doesn't mince her words, she doesn't play games and she can piss with the big boys.

Not sure if this is the last book in the series. If so then it is going out on a high note. If not, that is good too because it feels like the series has finally hit it's stride.

This book was in a word, awesome....I had heard about this series, but, wasn't sure if it was one that I would enjoy reading, but, boy was I wrong...I loved this book....And I loved Eve and Sean's story...Not to mention the cover was so hot!!!! Plus, it was an interacial romance which really peaked me interest...I guess this will be yet another series that I will have to go back and read from the beginning....I definately wouldn't recommend this to anyone under 17...As the sex scenes were really explicit....I mean most of these types of books are, but, this one was a tad 'experimental.' I liked Sean's back story...Loved that fact the Eve has been carrying a torch for him long before this book, as well as Sean having feeling for her too before this book was composed. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read...I killed this one in 4 hrs...And I do not read books really quickly....It definately well worth checking out...I've been sorta down since New Years and Xmas and at least I can say that this book certainly put a wide smile on my face....Yeah...I think I saw someone comment that this was the end of this series so I guess I'll just have to read the first 4 books;)

Side note: I am by no means a prude...I read all types of romance and erotica, but, because I felt that this book was really a love story developing w/ steamy sex scenes, I felt a little put off by some of the smut talk that Sean gave to Eve...It just made me cringe a little bit...The language that was used like she was a whore and not the women he loved, but, that's just me...If you like smut and explicit sex...than by all means you'll love this...

This series was my first by Jo Davis. I absolutely LOVED it. Loved the storylines in these books, LOVED the sexy firefighters, the action the sex scenes were O' My Lanta HOT and got better w/ each book.

This series reminds me a bit of Pamela Clares I-Team series (not quite as good but if you like P.C, you'll like this series)

Zach and Sean are definetly my favorite fire fighters. Zach for his quiet innocence and honor and Sean for his tortured heart and soul.

I didn't review all the books but loved them and decided to wrap them all up in this review.

There's A LOT of room for more books and would love to see one on Clay the newest member of A shift at Station 5 and would love to be introduced to the other shifts like B shift and C shift. The possibility for more books is endless and hope there are a few more.

This last book got a 5 cause I cried. If I cry reading a book, it gets a 5 star. lol

I LOVE this series. It's not angsty, and the suspense isn't earth-shattering, but I love the characters and the way it's written - there are no grammatical errors or badly constructed sentences in this series (one of my pet-peeves). This author used to be a teacher, and it shows. This book is no different.

The hero, as are the others, are real, gorgeous, hunky heroes, but accessible and "normal" too.i can just hear their sexy Tennessee drawls right now... Likewise the heroines. The author manages to get them just right, not TSTL, but really devoted to their men. The characterisation is credible too.

They have some lovely steamy bits, well-written, but they don't dominate, and the plot doesn't intrude on the romance. They just make a great entertaining read.

They are what you'd expect them to be - great romances about hot firefighters. What more can a girl want?

I was happy to finally have Sean's book. I really liked him. His struggle with alcohol and his family's death felt pretty realistic. I felt pretty hohum about the heroine. See I can't even remember her name.

I liked the angle of the old friend turned bad guy serving up some pretty damn cold revenge after 20 years. The bit at the end where he was going to blow up the town was a bit vague in detail though. Still it was probably enough for this level of a romantic suspense though.

I usually don't mind but the guys at the station house seemed a little too mushy this time around. I thought the guy talk was better in the earlier books.

It also didn't seem realistic that Sean got the promotion when he had been having so much trouble at work lately.

Still the writing was solid and the plot made sense and I had a fine time reading it.

I am sad to see this series end. I hope that the author considers writing a series around the cop/FBI characters that she introduced during the last few books.

Get chemistry between the H/h, although I think that Eve seems a little more "helpless" at times throughout this book.

I could feel Sean's pain at time while reading this book. I cannot imagine how hard it would have been to keep going after what happens to his children. His struggle with the bottle is understandable and his battle to stay sober is very believable. I am glad that the author did not gloss over this issue; the character "owns" his alcoholism throughout the entire story. Well done on Ms. Davis' part.

I put off reading this book for almost 3 years because depressing books bother me. Ugh. This was a hard book to continue reading and I admit that I started skimming through parts. There wasn't any suspense for me. I saw where this was going and that's exactly where it went. The hero had some major hurdles to overcome. Very sad. The heroine was 10 years younger and a was the peon to the H at work, so touchy there.

All in all, I got through it. Not a book I would recommend or reread.

A good conclusion to the series. Not sure why, but I just didn't love this one like I did others. Sean and Eve were hot together, and you were definitely pulling for him to get his HEA. I was happy with the pace and amount of action, and events didn't seem forced. A nice combination of events from the past and present day. Fills in blanks and gives the reader a better sense of what happened by being shown instead of just told.

I really enjoyed this series overall, and I'm definitely going to miss these hot firefighters!!!

I think I'm getting harder to please.

This book is part of a series, and I knew what the plot was before I even started. What can I say ... I don't like to leave things unfinished. So I read it. And it was what I expected it to be.

Tortured but healing hero, discovers the woman who has been trying to save him since book 1 is his true love. Super bad bad-guy is revealed to have caused his original trauma, despite never having showed up in any of the previous books.

Sigh. I don't want to read this kind of stuff anymore.

The story of Captain Sean Tanner and female Fire Fighter Eve Marshall is a classic Jo Davis story. Full of passion and mystery and adventure. Definitely a page turner, everyone.

A man from Sean's past makes an appearance ... a menacing appearance. You see just how powerful the love of a woman was able to revive a broken hearted man, along with the love and support of his friends.

3.5/5 - I enjoyed the story, and thought it was good, but maybe expected more since the series really built up to this last book. Sean and Eve are great together, but the suspense portion of the story was a little lacking. Sad to see the series end, and hope that maybe a few of the remaining single characters get a story in the future - I'm talking about you Cowboy Clay!!!

FINALLY Sean's much anticipated book!!! Amazing addition to the series - this is by far one of my absolute favorite series - there's just something so appealing about a hunky, possessive, heroic, sweaty, manly, SEXY fire fighter!! LOL

I'm sad this was the last of the series.

I'm not sure if there will be more but I would like to see Clay, Shane Ford, and even new detective Nick to get a book.
