Three and half stars.
This book is about Lal Ded, the 14th century Saivite Saint-Poet from Kashmir.
The author gives a critical introduction to Lal Ded's life (culled mostly from the legends), her Vaakh (Utterances - Verses), the collection, publication and translation (from Kashmiri to English) of her Vaakh which were originally circulated in the oral form (thanks to wandering minstrels) and a general critique of Lal Ded's impact in the Kashmir Society and to Kashmiri Language).
It ends with the translation of 139 of her Vaakh.
For a person new to Lal Ded, I think this serves as a good introduction. The problem is with the language in certain places. The English version of this book in some places is not very clear. That is the only complaint I have about this book. Otherwise, Mr. Jayalal Kaul has done an excellent work in introducing the saint-poet.
If you are like me interested in the Bhakti Tradition (of India) and especially on the Bhakti Literature (of the Indian Region), this is a good book on one of the saint-poets.
