This was a memoir of Colonel Robert Campbell's experiences in the Fur Trade industry out west. It was told to William Fayel 35 years after the fact, and I felt that this made the story kind of choppy and scattered. Basically he went out to trade in various furs and ended up starting a company. During that time Colonel Campbell interacted with Native American Indians, which sometimes was a hostile interaction. Near the end of his 10 years there, he sold his company and moved back to St. Louis.

This is a quick book to read and while sometimes it was interested, there were times that things seemed to be missing. I am sure that even in 1870 the author understood "spin control", so it is tough to determine 35 years of time passing caused anything that was written to be sugarcoated due to changing attitudes. The footnotes that were put in by the editor were helpful in fleshing out the story more, as well as helping to place some of the area that are talked about. I think anyone who has an interest in history, especially history of the old west will like this book, but I am not sure how much better the reader will understand the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade industry.
