Playing in his garden one Autumn day, Christopher is surprised to discover a strange young boy sitting in the maple tree, clad in fall colors and crowned with golden leaves. September - the son of both cold Winter and warm Summer - has come to play, and he and Christopher set off through the garden, in search of Christopher's lost ball. Along the way they meet the gooseberry boys and girls, Old Man Blackcurrant, the scarecrow amidst the sweet peas, Mrs. Bramley of the apple tree, and many more garden residents, whose playful antics give Christopher a better appreciation of the bounty they offer him and his family.

Originally published in 1923, as Lasse liten i trädgården ("Little Lasse in the Garden"), this is another of classic Swedish picture-book author and artist Elsa Beskow's titles featuring anthropomorphized forces of nature. Like the more well-known Peter in Blueberry Land , it follows an ordinary young boy through his encounters with the magical representatives of the natural world, and is a delightful celebration of the abundance that it offers. As always, the artwork is just charming - I particularly liked the painting of the two Misses Plum, one dark and one golden - and will grab young children's attention. A sweet little book, Christopher's Harvest Time is a title I would recommend to children looking for engaging Autumn tales, and to fans of Elsa Beskow's artwork.

Whimsical, beautifully illustrated story about Autumn which was first published in Swedish in 1920. Not much of a plot though.

Christopher's Harvest is a timeless story introducing children to the moods and elements of Autumn. Christopher unexpectedly goes on a tour of his family’s gardens as he tries to recover his lost ball. As Christopher is led through the garden by Mother Nature’s child September, the playful sprites that inhabit the garden send them on a merry chase, with riddles, songs, games, and dancing. Christopher is a well known figure in the garden, even though he has been unaware of the beings that live there. Rich with vocabulary, imaginative imagery, and Elsa Beskow’s beautiful classical illustrations, Christopher’s harvest makes a great story to read to older preschool and kindergarten aged children, and early grades children will delight in reading on their own. There are many opportunities for enrichment as instruments can be set to the songs, and children will delight in “dancing in a merry ring” like the characters in the story.

I love this one a bit less than other Elsa Beskow classics including Children of the Forest and The Sun Egg as it is a bit more clunky and challenging to read as a bedtime tale.

The characters, however, are very memorable and beautifully illustrated. It's a lovely seasonal edition to any Elsa Beskow collection for sure.

Only child Christopher meets the boy "Autumn" who walks with him through a garden and orchard where they meet the personified vegetation. Dialog and song pertaining to the coming change of season from summer/fall to winter occurs between the characters. Lovely and winsome art from the Swedish Elsa Beskow.

The songs were a little corny and not in with the time. But it was still a good story line and the art was detailed and very colorful. An older child might like this story to learn about autumn and what harvest time is.

Something's a little off with the translation and it's not guaranteed to hold a younger child's interest but the pictures are gorgeous.
