Revenant

Rate this book
Expecting another run-of-the-mill salvage job, Bo Andressen and his crew arrive at a crumbling castle in Wales and walk into a mystery of murder, hidden treasure, and greed with roots in the far past. In cooperating with the local law enforcement, Bo agrees to bring in a psychic, hoping to debunk rumors that the castle is haunted. However, paranormal liaison Tristan Lambert discovers that ghosts are only one suspected danger. Bo doesn't believe in ghosts, but Tristan is convinced they're dealing with a revenant—a hostile spirit that feeds on sexual energy and will stop at nothing, including possession and coercion, to get it. The arrival of the castle's owner, Sir Rhys Turcotte, with his secretary—who happens to be Bo's ex-lover—complicates an already dangerous situation. Unwittingly bound together by an evil spell, Bo and Tristan seek to unmask the revenant's earthly allies... before more people become victims to an ancient evil seeking rebirth.

Connie Bailey is a Luddite who can’t live without her computer. She’s an acrophobic who loves to fly, a fault-finding pessimist who, nonetheless, is always surprised when something bad happens, and an antisocialite who loves her friends like family. She’s held a number of jobs in many disparate arenas to put food on the table, but writing is the occupation that feeds her soul.

Connie lives with her ultralight designer husband at a small grass-strip airfield halfway between Disney World and Busch Gardens. Logic and reality have had little to do with her life, and she likes it that way.

I found this to be one wild, complex paranormal. I had never come across a story with a revenant in it though it was stated in the story that the incubus and succubus were born out of the early revenant myths. The revenant gets its power from strong emotions with sex being at the top so this story was filled with sex both consensual and non-con. If rape and violence bother you, stay away from this book. The characters are fairly well developed but Ms Bailey gives several of the characters more than one name which makes following the story difficult at times. I had to go back and re-read several scenes. I enjoyed the references back to what some call the pagan religions and the way two souls were bound together through history. All told, this is a good paranormal but one that cannot be skimmed but must be paid attention too.

3.5 although I was debating on giving it a 4. Almost.

I've checked and double checked and what was seriously missing was the warning that should have been set in place for this that book. ***WARNING OF VIOLENCE, UNCONSENTED SEX AND SCENES OF RAPE WHICH MIGHT BE SENSITIVE TO SOME READERS*** This book warranty this warning and since it wasn't I'm throwing out to those who haven't yet read it. Sorry Connie, don't take offense.

Anyhow, ghost stories tend to get me hyped, but this one is a whole other ball game. The ghost in this story as it turns out is a manifestation of pure sexual evil. To me he was worse than a damn incubus. At least they use sex for power without killing their victim. I'll say that I found many scenes disturbing in their nature such as the rape scenes, the brutality that went along with it and up until nearing the ending this was no love story. But if you have a need to know basis the love story aspect of it is resolved around Tristan and Bo which you'll read about in the last several chapters.

The book deserves my quoting: All that doesn't begin well ends well. And it does eventually come to an unbelievable climax and a satisfactory ending that soothes the sole, putting our minds to rest after the disturbing activities you'll read about throughout the story.

I could go on and on about this book now that my mind is swamped with so much to say on it but I wouldn't want to bore you and my review eventually turns into becoming a rant. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions and I won't falter to answer.

This is the second time I've read this book, I read it the first time when it first came out.
The story is full of mystery/who's really the bad guy and who isn't, supernatural full of evil spirits, good psychics, great character interactions, and a good love story wrapped throughout.

I read some of the reviews after I finished and I agreed wholeheartedly with one.

WTF did I read?!?!

The idea was interesting but there were so many characters (even the author was lost at times because names were switched, especially when there was at least 3 people with one name!). And then with so many "voices" and "thoughts". Then, the past, present, and future all mingling. My head hurts.

I didn't want to not finish either because I needed to know how it was going to end!!!!

And can we just say too much is too much? I mean the epilogue alone...WHAT?!?! I don't even know.

I rated 'it was OK' but it was more 'I did not like it' for among others:
1- Too much dead
2- Too much violence
3- RAPE, especially without a warning
4- The writing was quite confusing

Well, it didn't work for me.

DNF at 23% because there're too many characters and the writing was confusing.

Wow. What to say about this book...

Lots of sex? The flow of the story wasn't very smooth... And I'm kinda just sitting here going WTF did I just read? There were bits that didn't seem to mesh with the story and though there were interesting ideas in it I was kind of glad when it was over. I don't regret reading it but can't really recommend it either.
