4 Excited-Yaoifangirl's-Hearts

Yuuen the second child of a tribal clan chief views himself as the weakest link in his clan and is shameful of his lacking. He is so frail he couldn't even manage to hunt for his own food without endangering others around him and needing their constant protection and care.

He was the total opposite of Emba who's big, strong, brave and quick, making him the best hunter in the area. His hunting prowess was unmatched even by the males of Yuuen's clan. The only similarity Emba shared with Yuuen is that he too is a child of a tribal clan chief although of an opposition clan. Both clans are in disharmony due to discord over hunting grounds.

Yuuen and Emba was brought together by a desperate deception devised by Yuuen's father to secure their own clan's survival. Actually, I am not very clear on the exact motive behind this awkward plan of Yuuen's father. It seems rather fanciful. *Shrugs* I guess whatever works for a Yaoi story to bring the destined Uke & Seme together for funtimes are the always excusable in the heart of a Yaoi-fangirl. *giggles*

What I love about this manga:

The artwork. It was mesmerizing. I mean what could go wrong with men in loincloths?

*nosebleeds*

More men in in sexy loincloths....

*dies and went to heaven*

Ahhh, how I love the sensuality of the bishie men drawn by Takashima sensei. They are such wet dreams for me. Here's a few more Takashima sensei's bishonen for our pleasure.

Yuuen & Emba ♥~(‘▽^人)

Yuni & Selem O(≧∇≦)O

*Yuni is Yuuen's father and Selem is the father of Emba. They both have a history together. (─‿‿─)

Another reason to love this manga is that I absolutely adore how lovey-dovey Emba & Yuuen are. The romantic things Emba would say to Yuuen makes my yaoi-fangirl-heart goes pitter patter. (。♥‿♥。)

Although Yuuen is pretty much of a damsel in distress most of the time all the time, I still like him very much as he is the type of Uke I am fond of; beautiful, small, frail and needs constant coddling from his strong and manly Seme.

Yuuen's soft look reminds me very much of Andre Pejic my favorite male supermodel. Yuuen is such a beautiful androgynous guy no wonder Emba would die for him.

By the way this little baby boy here is Nava, he is the nephew of both Yuuen and Emba as Yuuen's brother married Emba's sister. Nava is such a little brat but cute as hell tho.

To me, the artwork of this manga is breathtaking. I really can't stop staring at the characters beautiful body and face. And I have lost count as to how many times I have re-read this favorite manga of mine.

I read this twice.

Why? I don't know, it's not that the plot is awesome. In fact there are many inconsistencies and non sequitur vignettes and deus ex machina solutions.

But it was so primal and had a perfect right-in-the-feels aim I forgot about the raw simplicity of it all. Or maybe it was the raw simplicity which made me fall in love with Yuuen and Emba. No excuses, no shame, no dishonor, and consequently, no beating around the bush.

I'm sold.

This is probably one of the best yaoi mangas out there. The art is gorgeous, and there is actually a good story attached. This used to be a favourite of mine, but I've grown out of the yaoi phase. Still, I appreciate it for what it is. Emba and Yuuen's story is my favourite - their fathers' was always too bittersweet for me. And my friend and I shall always remember the cute short with Yuuen's nephew. Nnbah! Uuuen!

¡No fastidies!

Just read this black and white yaoi cartoon online. An m/m love story in a tribal setting, well drawn but not a lot happening. No overt sex either.

Synopsis:

This manga is set in prehistoric times and is composed of three stories.

"Wild Rock"

This is the longest of the stories. Yuuen is the heir to one clan, while Emba is the heir to another. Both clans have been warring for some time, and Yuuen's clan keeps losing game to Emba's clan. Knowing that something must be done, Yuuen's father comes up with a plan. He instructs Yuuen to dress and act like a girl, seduce Emba, and, er, somehow use this to the clan's advantage. I'm not entirely clear on the details of this "plan."

"Innocent Lies"

This story takes place further in the past and stars Yuuen and Emba's fathers (oh yes, the two have a history together).

"Child Rock"

This story is a bit of fluff for those who want to see how Emba and Yuuen's relationship has worked out. Emba's brother now has a child named Nava, and Emba and Yuuen are bathing him before taking him back to Yuuen's brother and his wife. Yuuen's brother is apparently clueless and has no idea that Yuuen and Emba's relationship is anything other than symbolic.

Review:

I originally wrote up a longer, more detailed explanation of what prompted me to buy, read, and review this, but it morphed into a giant rant about libraries, collection development policies, and the dangers of saying "we don't collect porn" without bothering to define the word "porn." So I'll just move on to the review.

Before rereading this, I vaguely remembered it as being little more than an excuse for hot caveman sex. Now...well, I was kind of right, although there wasn't as much sex as I remembered (a grand total of two sex scenes, which take up a fairly small percentage of the volume). There isn't much plot, and what there is doesn't quite make sense. But still. The result is kind of sweet, and, while I think I'm a little more critical of it than I was when I first read it back in grad school, I liked it overall.

If for some reason you pick this up for the story, you may be disappointed. I still don't understand why Yuuen's father's very first suggestion for how to deal with Emba's clan was for Yuuen to dress and act like a girl. First off, why was seducing the clan's heir the best way to go? Second, why Yuuen? Oh, and why did it never occur to Yuuen that Emba would have noticed he didn't have breasts when they hugged? Later, when Yuuen and Emba

Do you know why I read this back in college, though? It wasn't the story that caught my attention. I saw the front and back cover illustrations, and I was hooked, just like that. (Um. The humor and general sweetness of the stories helped, too. Yes.)

Takashima sticks with stereotypical character designs. Yuuen and young Yuni have slight builds, and Takashima emphasizes this by having Yuuen dress as a girl. Yuuen has a fairly gentle personality and is more suited to taking care of a wounded Emba than hunting. Young Yuni is more combative and maybe a bit bratty, but still designed to be cuter than, say, Emba or Selem. Emba and young Selem both have more muscular builds, even though they're supposedly about the same age as Yuuen and young Yuni. Emba is quiet, capable, and protective, while young Selem seems similar, only maybe a little more easy-going.

When I first read this, I hadn't read much like it before, so the character types didn't seem quite so stereotypical to me. During my reread, the stereotypes were more noticeable, and it bothered me a little that Emba and young Selem were so much more capable than Yuuen and young Yuni. This was more clearly shown, I think, in Emba and Yuuen's story.

Every time Yuuen tried to hunt, he had to be saved. In one instance, his lack of hunting ability and knowledge of how to protect himself got Emba injured. As far as I can tell, the only useful things Yuuen got to do were bandage Emba's injuries (which he indirectly caused) and charm Emba with his gentleness and pretty face. At one point, Yuuen's brother says “Women have it too easy! Not having to hunt... They live a nice, easy life.” There is nothing in the volume to disprove this, since women show up rarely and the only demonstrated “task” they perform is bear children. If you think of Yuuen in the role of “woman,” then there's a little more data to work with...but it's still disappointing stuff. Emba seemed perfectly fine with Yuuen sitting around and doing nothing but admiring him as he hunted, and he didn't mind giving Yuuen some of his game as gifts.

Getting back to the stuff I liked about this manga... I didn't know it when I first read Wild Rock, but I got lucky in the way the relationships played out. Both of the sex scenes are consensual, hurray! “Wild Rock,” my favorite of the three stories, is very sweet, and I was glad that it ended happily, even if I was left wondering how clan inheritance was going to work. Even though I didn't like “Innocent Lies” as much, I loved the bit where Yuni gave Selem the necklace that marked him as his clan's heir. It made for an even better reread of “Wild Rock” - keep an eye out of the little moment when older Yuni notices the necklace wrapped around older Selem's wrist!

Another thing I liked about this volume was its touches of humor. Takashima didn't take things too seriously. I loved that older Yuni and older Selem . I also admit to laughing a bit after reading the re-write of the first scene, although I'd argue that Yuuen caused Emba far more trouble than Emba ever caused Yuuen.

Overall, this manga is a pleasant bit of fluff that happens to have a couple on-page sex scenes. Even several years later, I still like the visuals and find the romance between Emba and Yuuen to be sweet. I just wish that Yuuen could have had a chance to demonstrate at least one useful skill.

Extras:

There are an extra couple pages that re-do the first scene of the manga: instead of killing the big cat that was about to attack Yuuen, Emba gets swallowed whole by it. Poor Emba. There are also a few sketches throughout the volume, as well as an author's note about each of the stories.

Picture this…prehistoric, men in skimpy loincloths and steamy lovemaking! Enough said, huh? Here's the synopsis–brief as it is. Wild Rock is divided into three short stories: Wild Rock, Innocent Lies and Child Rock. The first story is about Emba and Yuuen. Emba and Yuuen are heirs to opposing clans in conflict, the East Forest Tribe and Lakeside Tribe. Yuuen is in the forest, hunting and minding his own business when this lion tries to attack him. Yuuen is the uke–smaller, weaker and no match for the ferocious beast. Next thing you know this big, strong and handsome young man pounces from the trees and kills the lion! Okay...a little cliché, yes. But that’s how the story begins. Emba (the big handsome seme) saves Yuuen and it’s love at first sight, for both men, though nothing is verbally stated until much later.

Yuuen’s father Yuni fears for their tribe’s welfare because the Lakeside Tribe (Emba’s people) are killing all the big game. So, he forces Yuuen to pretend he’s a woman, in the hopes he’ll sway Emba’s thinking in favour of their tribe. It’s a simple pretext that works too well and regardless of Yuni’s plans the young men end up falling in love. I’ll stop here, so I don’t spoil the entire plot.

Innocent Lies is actually a prequel to Wild Rock. This is a story that involves Yuni and Emba's father Selem, as younger men. Yuni steps into an animal trap set by Selem and is injured as a result. Selem nurses Yuni back to health. Selem knows that Yuni is the heir to the East Forest Tribe, but Yuni doesn't realize that Selem is the heir to the Lakeside Tribe. As time goes by feelings develop between the pair, but at the end neither is willing to sacrifice their status in order to remain together.

Child Rock is a very brief story (if you can call it that) about Emba and Yuuen years after Wild Rock, when they spend the day together babysitting Nava (the offspring of Emba’s sister and Yuuen’s brother).

Okay, I’m not going to mince words. Wild Rock is well-drawn with utterly gorgeous characters. I’d take Emba any day of the week–actually I’d take his old man too! LOL And Yuuen is the quintessential uke. So, what is it this yaoi lacks? Well, it lacks backbone and I’m referring to the plot. The plot was too simplistic and predictable. I couldn’t sink my teeth in, not enough meat on the bone I’m afraid. Here’s my rating–art A+, plot C+, sex mild and the translation questionable in spots. My overall score is a 3.5 flame because I felt Wild Rock had potential for so much more.

Not For the Faint of Heart - Wild Rock Review

So armed with some weak beer I'm back to review some provocative picture books, this time with the yaoi Wild Rock. I picked this one out mainly because the cover, because it has a certain fantasy feel to it. And for those wanting something that's kind of like fantasy, perhaps partly just tribal, it really is a fun, light read. And I say a light read because there isn't much to read. The dialogue is fairly sparse, both because of the plots of the story and because the dialogue takes a back seat to the art, which is great and cute and really sells the books.

The volume is broken up into two stories, though they are linked rather strongly. The first centers around a young man who doesn't fit in being asked to try and seduce the son of the leader of another tribe. It's kind of an outrageous premise, but it worked for me, for me not really wanting to question anything. It was cute, though there is very little to actually read. Part of the story is that the main character can't talk or he'll give himself away as a man (despite the fact that the other guy knows). So it's a lot of fun scenes of them getting to know each other and some action and that sort of thing.

The art really is the biggest reason for picking up the book. If the cover left you unconvinced, the interiors are just as fun and hot and steamy. There is plenty of tension and the sex is done well with care taken. The setting is interesting and different enough, and the characters are varied so that there's no confusing them. That actually is quite a compliment seeing as how in yaoi different body types are typically rarely seen. But the second story is a variant on the first, though the characters are a bit more realized and I felt more for them. It's almost sad, seeing as how the two stories play out, but at least there's a happy ending...kind of.

Which brings me to the last little bonus, a two page sequence that I just didn't know what to think of. I mean, really, I had no idea how to think of it. It was...hopefully surreal. But otherwise the volume as a whole was good and solid, if not exactly anything that stuck with me long after I was done. A fine manga, and, to me, a 7/10.

I first read this as a scanlation online and instantly fell in love with it, despite the fact that I normally don't like yaoi stories with very girly ukes. I really liked Yuuen though, he knew his limitations and didn't like misleading Emba. To sum up, it is an incredibly sappy and overly romantic story with the gorgeously handsome warrior winning the hand of his fair maiden! It is also very short, but padded out with the backstory of how Emba's and Yuuen's fathers know each other and a little snippet of Emba and Yuuen's happily ever after, so all in all, it is a very satisfying read.

I probably shouldn't even admit that I've read this....

Regardless, I have to say I really liked the book. Quite a bit actually. Obviously this book is NOT for children or those with easily offended sensibilities. The story is interesting because of the setting. I would have never thought to have found a graphic novel set in prehistoric times. Nor would I have ever expected to find yaoi set in that timeframe. The art is pretty good, the plot is fairly standard for yaoi, and as already mentioned, the setting is a nice change from the norm.

If you're not the type to be easily offended, give the book a try. If gay men bother you, don't even open the book.

This new edition is really pretty and it includes an additional short story and an interview with Yuen and Enba. The art style of the extra story was a bit different and not as pretty, in my opinion. It also was a bit insubstantial... The interview was slightly awkward too, it just didn't fit into the setting of the story, too modern. So having said that, buying the new edition was not really worth it for me because I already own the first edition. But the story of Wild Rock and Innocent Lies is still one of my favourites of all time.

I absolutely love Takashima's art and stories. Both are so beautiful. The story for this one is a little angst-y, definitely sweet and VERY hot!! I often re-read this one, I even have a Japanese drama cd version as well. Like my other favorite Man's Best Friend: Inu Mo Arukeba by this manga-ka, there is a HEA. It's wonderful when love conquers all.

Placed in the highly unusual setting of prehistoric times, Wild Rock shows the tense situation of two warring clans trying to sort out their differences and live together. Young Yuuen and Emba are supposed to be enemies but their feelings of love for each other can’t be denied. The drawings are spare but lovely, emphasizing the gorgeous men who make up these stories of star-crossed lovers.

One of my favorite mangas ever. The story of Emba and Yuen, and of their fathers, Selem and Yuni, is simply sweet. And since we know that heteronormative rules were not common in non-Christian communities, you can either take it as fantasy or a story from times long gone. It's also wonderfully drawn, which is always a plus.

One of the earliest English published BL manga. I found it engaging, unique, and memorable. (I still remember scenes from it, and I haven't reread it since 2008--eight years!)

The art is clean and emotional, and the stories are compelling and action-packed. I particularly liked how the fathers' of the two mcs had a little tale that their sons were unaware of.

Nic dziwnego, że zwierze wyczuło go i chce zjeść.

Quite liked it. I remember reading this many years ago, and the fact that I can still remember the plot I believe shows that the storyline was memorable.

Art - absolutely gorgeous. It’s an older work, so the scantalations are a bit blurry, but the quality of the drawing is high. Clean flowing lines. The sequence of events and time passing could be indicated better in some areas.

Characters/Plot - tbh I like the uke in the side story more than the one in the main story, but all characters were likeable. Granted, the plot was not deep, and definitely could have benefited from several more chapters to really understand the clan dynamics and history. But I think what is presented is a good diving board to an interesting story.

3.5/ 5 rounded up because the relationships were surprisingly tender and because the character art was gorgeous. There was a lot about the plot and central conflict that needed more explanation, and the second story about the main characters' fathers threw me at first because they looked almost identical to their children in the first story. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and can definitely see myself rereading it multiple times.

Amores nos tempos da pedra

Yaba daba duuh!
